u.s. service members killed in action in niger over two weeks ago. >> congresswoman freds rica wilson was with the family during the call and here's what she said happened. >> he said, well, i guess you knew he -- something to the effect that he knew what he was getting into when he signed up, but i guess it hurts anyway. you know, just matter of factly that this is what happens. anyone who is signing up for military duty is signing up to die. she was in tears, and she said, he didn't even remember his name. >> the president shot back immediately, refuting her claim. >> mr. president, what did you say to sergeant johnson's widow on the phone yesterday? >> didn't say what that congresswoman said. didn't say it at all. she knows it, and she now is not saying it. i had a very nice conversation with the woman, with the wife, who is -- sounded like a lovely

woman. did not say what the congresswoman said, and most people aren't too surprised to hear that. let her make her statement again and you'll find out. >> it's a fast moving story that continues to develop this morning. we go to nbc's edward lawrence. >> reporter: good morning, frances. what's being lost here is we're talking about a widow who has two kids with one more on the way, a grieving widow. now, the congresswoman is actually doubled down on this, sending out a tweet saying that her account is exactly what happened with the president being insensitive. in fact, in the tweet, the widow added the widow's name, myesha johnson calling out the president for saying the woman or the wife when defending the call. further, the mother of the fallen soldier says the president did disrespect her son. now, the pentagon is sending a team to niger to figure out exactly how these americans walked into an ambush during a low-risk mission here. still more fallout. another family coming forward whose son died in afghanistan

last june saying during the condolence call, the president offered $25,000, and the family never received the money. now, the white house is saying that the president recently sent a check for that. not everyone agrees that money should be the answer for the president. and in fact leon panetta saying this would be a terrible precedent set for a president to offer money going forward for families -- or these gold star fami families. many folks are now questioning whether the president can actually be a consoler in chief. frances, phillip? >> edward, thank you. the manhunt is over following a deadly workplace shooting in maryland. authorities arrested 37-year-old radee prince. he's accused of killing three co-workers and critically wounding two others at the business where he worked. he then drove to a used car dealership in wilmington, delaware, and allegedly shot and

critically wounded another man he knew. nbc's dan scheneman has more on this multi-state manhunt that led to the suspect's arrest. >> reporter: radee prince wanted in connection to shootings in maryland and delaware is in police custody. >> as a collective effort, the apprehension and a very sad day to a close. >> reporter: at about 5:30, authorities recovered the suspect's vehicle. just over an hour later, police were tipped he was walking through a neighborhood. >> at 7:05 p.m., the suspect was taken into police custody after a brief foot chase from three agents from the atf. and during the foot chase, a suspect did discard a 380 firearm, which has also been recovered. he was taken into custody with no incident. >> reporter: police say prince's shooting spree started earlier in the day at a maryland business park where prince was scheduled to work. when police arrived, five

employees were shot. three were dead. almost two hours later in wilmington, delaware, police say prince shot another victim. investigators say the victim was known to prince. in the hours that followed, police watched for prince along the i-59 corridor from new jersey to washington until finally capturing him in newark, delaware. dan scheneman, nbc news. just two days ago, the leader of the free world tweeted, quote, so much fake news being put in dying magazines and newspapers. denying an anecdote in the new yorker about a controversial joke he made to vice president mike pence. and it's a routine remark for mr. trump who often rails against negative reporting while embracing positive news. it seems as if nearly half of the country actually agrees with the president. some 46% of those polled telling politico morning consult they believe news organizations fabricate news stories about the president and his administration. among republicans, that number jumps to 76%. in texas, a manhunt is under way for suspects caught on

dramatic surveillance video. it shows a group of men carjacking a woman and her 11-month-old niece at gunpoint in broad daylight in huts ton this week. police believe the suspects are also linked to a shooting nearby that killed one man and injured another. one suspect was captured, but the other three are still at large. we have an update on nba player gordon hayward and his grisly injury. remember, it's really tough to watch. we're warning you here. five minutes in his debut as a celtic, the forward made that awkward landing. his legs buckling underneath him while his teammates watched in horror. hayward was carried away on a stretcher so he could be treated for a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia. he underwent surgery. his agent says hayward is unlikely to return this season but they expect him to make a full recovery. hayward had been in a hospital bed, and he messaged the boston faithful before his team's home opener last night. >> i just wanted to say thank

angle before crashing onto a st. peter burg neighborhood. the plane hit at least two vehicles but fortunately avoided a school nearby. four people including two onboard the plane were taken to the hospital but are expected to live. another was treated at the scene. a second grade boy slept for 11 days straight and doctors are calling it a medical mystery. two weeks ago 7-year-old wyatt shaw was the life of the party at a wedding but fell into a dangerous sleep shortly after. amy thompson, his mother, says he just couldn't stay awake. wyatt was rushed to norton churn's hospital in louisville, kentucky, where they put him under observation, after ten days, doctors tried a new seizure meddation, and he woke up the next day. however, doctors still can't explain what happened. he'll spend three weeks at a rehab institute once he's discharged but hopefully he's okay and they can figure out exactly what happened and what caused that. >> so frightening for the family. 11 days. just ahead, the brave security guard that was first on the scene at the las vegas
