sending a message without saying a word, why they united outside of school this morning. the opioid crisis is forcing grandparents into an unexpected role. a wild finish out west sends the eagles flying high in a big way this morning. right now at 11:00 a show of unity at a chester county school in response to several incidents some are calling racist. tensions are heating up across our region. good morning. i'm erin coleman. students reacting to a pair of race related incidents.

one happened in washington townsh township. katie is showing us why racial tensions are running high and how students are making a statement about it. >> they are. let's begin with what happened in coatsville. earlier this week we told you how high school students there posed for picture with racist imagery. it had leaders reacting pretty harshly. this morning students held a silent show of unity. they could be seen standing arm in arm in the football staid up. it was in response to pictures of their classmates posing carvings of a swletters kkk. amid racial tensions running high a peaceful protest was held

after a brawl erupted earlier in the week. and that's video of the brawl. it happened after students confronted classmates they say texted racial slurs and hateful language. dozens of students held a sit-in yesterday. students told us what was in those hateful text messages. >> saying we are going to bring the kkk back and all of the black people in our school are monkeys and they belong back in the zoo. >> i was offended and i felt sick to my stomach that my township is resulting in this behavior so strongly and so openly. >> they are not charging anyone in the fight though we are told school students are facing suspensions. >> all of this comes as two student frs a middle school are suspended for throwing rocks and yelling racial slurs at a high

school bus during a football game between the two schools. we will continue to keep you posted from all of the incidents throughout the area. nbc 10 news. >> claims of a mold cover up took over the school board meeting last night. parents continue to voice their concerns after mold continued to shut down all schools for a week. they believe they knew about the mold problem long before a teacher submitted images. she claims she is sick because of mold agreed. >> covering up the bleach and painting over it and trying to deny it. >> school board member is calling for an independent investigation. leaders in philadelphia want more information about potential mold problems in their schools. it closed for three days after mold was discovered in the

ventilation system. they filed a right to know request with the district. it demands more about environmental health risks. police arrested a man after they say he fired shots at officers. it is just after 3:00 this morning. police stopped the man in the robbery investigation. they say he took off running and fired at them. officers chased them down without firing back. no one was hurt. and we can't get enough of this gorgeous fall weather. plenty of sunshine. temperatures well above average as we take a look at the ben franklin parkway. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here. we are loving this stretch. >> a lot of people enjoying this weather for more than a few days. look at that blue sky at cape may. we have skies like that all over

the area. wilmington, delaware, nothing like that. have to go west of st. louis before you find any kind of significant cloud cover. it is up to 68 degrees in philadelphia. that's above our average high for this time of the year. it is 70 at wilmington, dover, millville, that's pretty warm for this time of the day. temperatures in the mid-70s and near 70s across much of the region. it will cool down pretty quickly after the sun goes down with clear skies, light wind and low humidity. we'll see if it stays like this or warms up even more as we head through the weekend coming up in a few minutes. the man accused of a deadly rampage remains in a delaware prison. we have details from a witness

who saw the crime spree begin on wednesday morning. a coworker inside where this all started says ronnie started the day bad mouthing other workers and the company. that worker said he even tried to fight a few people. a short time later started shooting. police say he ultimately shot five people killing three of them. law enforcement captured prince thanks to the mother of a rookie wilmington police officer. she spotted prince ditching his suv then she called police and quietly surrounded the area that caught him after a short foot chase. it was a relief for the family. the victim in the wilmington shooting says prince was a family friend and his brother is getting better. >>. >> he is hanging in there. he is able to respond.

it hurts. to see him on the bed like that, it hurts to see him like that. >> family members say ball had recently loaned tow trucks to help out after one of the recent hurricanes. prince is no stranger to police. his records show 62 felony arrests and 13 misdemeanor arrests. the courts only convicted him 18 times. right now you'll find a time line of how the shootings unfolded. you can also learn more about the victims that were killed. we are seeing new video this morning in the case of an armed robbery victim who wrestled the gun away from his attacker. this morning police released this video of the man they are looking for in connection with that case. they say he went up to the victim back on october 9th and asked to use his phone. detectives say once he had the

phone he used the gun. the victim was shot but he was able to get ahold of the gun. the shooter rode off on a bike. if you recognize the suspect call police. a robbery spree. when stolen credit cards wouldn't work he pulled out a gun to get what he wanted. watch as he allegedly steals a wallet in a near by laundromat. that is when the robbery spree began. a live look at the wells fargo center. that is where the 76ers play their home opener against the boston celtics. top draft pick scored ten points in his first game in washington. despite the loss they gave high marks for their first outing. biggest in the history of our country. that is the promise from president trump this morning as we take a look at the tax

ocean temperature is 65 degrees. the average is 58 for this date. that's way above average. it is 71 in north cape may. you can see the offshore wind. that's the land breeze and that's why it is warm right at the beaches. it is 68 summers point and avalon. it was much cooler this morning than it was at the shore. everybody is catching up. like i said, the average high is 66 degrees, 72 yesterday, about 75 today, 77 tomorrow and sunday and 78 on monday. and that's where it ends. we are not going to keep with this pattern forever. we have clear skies for the most part. here are high thin clouds. some clouds west of st. louis. those are the closest

significant clouds. now, because of the clear skies you can actually see this meteor shower tonight. this is the meteor shower. the best time is near midnight or towards dawn. at midnight you're looking at the eastern sky. around dawn you're looking at the southern sky. it is out there because of debris. that's tomorrow night or going to be a great night for that. it is 78 degrees today. allentown 76 and look at even the shore at 74. with that land breeze they are just as warm as everybody else. delaware at 76 degrees. and for monday night it's going to stay warm, that we are sure of. it looks like the rain may very well hold off until tuesday and it would lead to some pretty

nice weather for a football game. now, over the weekend we have temperatures well above normal, more than 10 degrees above normal. sun shieb both days, virtually no chance for any kind of rain. it's a pretty amazing forecast here for a weekend this time of the year. then monday clouds start to increase. eagles play at night and then as we go into the transition we'll get pretty heavy rain tuesday and maybe into wednesday. later eelgs fans may want to send andy reid a thank you note, the wild football finish that suddenly put the birds at the

an armed robbery in which the victim grabbed his attacker's gun. it happened in north philadelphia on october 9th. the suspect asked to use the victim's cell phone. the victim was shot during the scuffle. if you recognize the suspect call police. i have pictures from the nice blue sky. that's a beautiful blue sky. and we have blue skies all over the place up through the lehigh valley. not a cloud in the sky there. it is what you see on the satellite and radar.

you don't see clouds until you get back west of st. louis. we are pretty sure there is not any kind of significant moisture coming in here. it is already 70 in millville, dover and 68 in philadelphia. the average high this time of the year is 66. everybody is way above average, even the ocean is warmer than average. in the middle of afternoon maybe dropping down to 72 or so and dropping more we'll have more coming up in just a few minutes. a federal disaster service was supposed to close today. it may remain open next week

because it has been so busy. officials set it up. the center says it helped more than 70 families register with fema and also helping with temporary housing and mental and emotional needs. the center at 167 west allegheny avenue. schools are closed. food and water are scarce. traffic lights are not working. crews are working to repair ruined electrical wiring.

firsthand. she escaped the shooting spree earlier this month and got on a plane to fly back to her home in santa row sa san santa rosa. fires swept through the region. she said she is having trouble processing it all. >> okay. this has got to stop. that's all i kept thinking is there's got to be an end to this. where is the end? >> she and her parents have been sleeping in a temporary unit until she can find affordable long-term housing. the television academy voted against harvey weinstein amid his sex harassment scandal. the investigation began after someone came forward with an allegation of sexual assault.

it says the incident took place in february 2013 at a beverly hills hotel. the accuser said he came to her hotel room unannounced, pushed his way into the room and raped her. a spokesperson says we deny any allegations of nonconsensual sex and can't respond to anonymous allegations. and there's this. a document shows weinstein threatened to investigate. according to minutes from a board meeting he exploded because he believed a lawyer was digging into his sex life. they said the lawyer was looking into a deal weinstein made over money raised from an auction. weinstein is losing out on honored he already received. they stripped him of his 2002

fellowship award. in recent weeks the motion picture and he fired him. now to an urgent warning. they say putting them in your checked bags could bring it down. >> this morning a serious new warning from a federal aviation administration. calling far ban on allowing passengers to fly with laptops in their checked luggage because of a potential for catastrophic fire. it comes after bursting into flames inside aircraft cabins. the faa filing a paper that settings global aviation standards. its tests show when the rechargeable battery overheats near an aerosol spray can it can

take out a airlines fire suppression system. it could lead to the loss of the aircraft. >> i have significant concerns because we know there are a number of lithium batteries that will create the potential for fire. >> they launched 31 cases lasting year which batteries caught fire or smoldered on airline flights. three cargo planes have been dis destroyed by fires. two of those were fatal. they recommend a passenger should not be allowed to pack large electronic devices. >> there is something killing more people than all of the wars and hunger in the world.

we are talking about environmental solution. >> they published a major study showing pollution killed about 9 million people in 2015. it is more than smoking, aids, tuberculosis and malaria combined. the cost is more than $4.5 trillion. more than 2.5 million grandparents find themselves back in the parenting role because of the opioid crisis. rosemary introduces us. >> mornings start early for kathleen and sean. watching wide-eyed is sofia, their granddaughter. >> we needed to call crisis several times for our oldest daughter who was really struggling and found out she was

addicted to opiates. >> they now have custody of their oldest daughter's child and their lives are driven by the needs of an energetic toddler. >> it is more of a challenge. if sofia is sick one of us has to play rock, paper scissors to see who is staying home with her. >> each uses vacation and family leave so someone is always there. it is a daily challenge. >> our life doesn't stop because we have sofia. it is our life plus sofia which we wouldn't trade because it is the right thing to do. >> her mom is in recovery and does visit. they hope far permanent family reunion. >> we want sofia to be in a safe place. >> loving her is making sure she is in a place that's safe for her. i'm proud of alicia for that. i really am.

the best methods are to establish good function to help students with autism. i think it's probably the biggest change that happened is we started to learn from our practice over the years and refined our skills and become much better at it over time. >> and really early intervention is key to getting kids on the right track. talk about some of the success stories we have seen. >> early intervention is critical. we can really set them them up for success later in life. we really need to bring it into the environments and start to practice the skills there.

we benefit so much from that unique experience with they can let us know what was the benefit to them. we have students who are able to work in any different environments and lead effective loo lives. >> we are seeing some of those pictures there. we have a big event. tell us about that. >> we'll have the take a bite out of autism fundraiser. we'll have them bringing signature dishes. they will be providing food, wide, spirits. we'll have a champagne station, many activities for anyone to get involved in. it will go to the benefit of the

we are talking about the mid-70s and it may get warmer into monday. then things start to change big time. nice and dry across the east it is 77 in robinsville and long port. 74 and keeping things warmer. newark at 76 degrees. we have the northwest winds now. they are not cold northwest winds. they are dry northwest winds. let's see how things change as

we go through the weekend. now the winds start to go out of the north. again, it's not cold air that's coming in here. it starts to swing into the southeast by saturday afternoon and night. don't see any clouds really until sunday when some start to come in ahead of the next system but still dry sunday afternoon even into monday where we are getting a southerly wind. humidity is starting to go up. the computer models are showing it dry into monday evening. that's when the eagles are playing with the southerly wind it will be on the warm side. certainly through late october and the rain may very well hold off until tuesday. over the weekend no rain. no real chance of rain. that's several days in a row we have been able to say that. back into the 70s even at the jersey shore. we'll be seeing big changes

coming after monday. monday we are still in the upper 70s with that southerly wind but tuesday and wednesday that's when the change starts to come. we get big changes very often you can get big rainfalls. that's what we are seeing here and then it gets much colder by next weekend. we'll be right back. i'm a concrete mason.
