incidents of hate are on the rise, including in schools. that's the word from the pennsylvania human rights commission. now a local school leader is taking action after students shouted racial slurs during a football game. the superintendent spelled it out on the district's website. >> nbc 10's steven fisher talked to quakertown students who are fed up and ready for change. >> reporter: in sports, there is a level playing field. in life, so such field of equality chexists. the school district says during a home football game, two of their middle school students directed racial slurs towards cheltenham cheer leaders. >> something needs to be happening. we have to look deep into it. >> reporter: they've been vocal from the top down, together students and district administrators have refused

today remain silent on what they call a vital issue. >> i'm a minority as myself. so this sort of relates to me. >> reporter: the students took the racist remarks personally. >> we have to make a difference as people. you know, incidents like this shouldn't happen. they shouldn't have hate towards someone because of the pigment of their skin. >> reporter: the school district admits there is a problem, citing other past racial issues with students. but the majority is now stepping in. >> change something that's been a problem and you know, to have a proactive approach to solve it and make it better so something like this won't happen in the future. >> reporter: determined today show acceptance a. >> we care about what happened and what those kids did didn't represent the rest of us. >> reporter: i'm told the students involved have been disciplined. we did speak to the district about this issue. coming up at 6:00 you'll hear

from them and why they say it will never happen again. they were tossing things and yelling. new video of two women locked inside of a seven 11 because they were suspected of shop lifting. listen. an officer arrived at the frankfurt store. one of the women hit him, a defense lawyer we spoke to says even though it was legal, the problem was locking the women in the store in the first place. >> it flies in the face of good old commonsense. i don't care what shopkeeper's privilege may exist. to come upon a situation where people are already out of their minds, risks harm to the public and to the police. >> police arrested both women. internal affairs is reviewing the case. seven 11 isn't commenting. crisis in puerto rico continues tonight one month after the hurricane hit. 80% of the island is still without power. 30% of the residents have no

water. 5,000 people are living in shelters. meanwhile, the governor of puerto rico tweeted that a large number of schools on the battered island will reopen on monday. it is going to be a long recovery process. and that has led some -- led to some of the victims moving to our area. >> nbc 10's rosemary connors spoke to a father and son who left the island. they're looking for help here. >> the boys' mother lives in philadelphia, that's why they landed here. but the father and son need a place to stay. the father has made it through hurricanes before on puerto rico, but maria turned his family's life upside down. >> hurricane. >> reporter: hurricane maria was unprecedented. surviving this storm is half the battle. surviving the aftermath seems to be a never ending challenge. but for raul barrios and his 9-year-old son, music keeps them

going. they fled to philadelphia with the clothes on their back and a few belongings, including this drum. back home, raul was a children's music teacher and professional musician playing in jazz bands. he wants to return to puerto rico, but knows he can't. >> it's impossible. they are no jobs there. that school. and our performance center, it's closed. nobody is working. >> reporter: they're hoping to get help here at this disaster services center on allegheny avenue, set up by philadelphia's office of emergency management. just this week, intrerpreters have helped many people. >> i've been doing registration and people have been arriving as of last night, coming here this morning. we also have a nurse that's able to triage people immediately if there's a need. we're referring them to local

street. the hit and run happened over the weekend. investigators say the gray van was speeding. a robbery spree in west philly when stolen credit cards wouldn't work, police say this man pulled out a gun to get what he wanted. watch as he allegedly steals this wallet at a nearby landry mat. detectives tell us that is when the spree began. we have new information in the case of a habitat for humanity job site burglarized for the second time since august. aaa of south jersey is donating $500 to replace tools that were stolen. the burglars hit the same site three separate times this summer, stealing $5,000 worth of supplies. attorney general jeff sessions will be in philadelphia tomorrow. sessions is scheduled to speak at a gathering of police chiefs from around the country. it's being held at the pennsylvania convention center. in a philadelphia businessman makes a gift with a

chuck todd joins us now from washington. thank you very much for joining us. that florida lawmaker claimed today that kelly lied during the briefing and used a racist insult directed at her. what do you make of those accusations? >> we are in a situation where i think the white house and the congresswoman have both been talking past each other and nobody wants to take the high ground. why the president of the united states couldn't simply have called back the mother and said i am -- i don't want you to take away anything other than i'm feeling your pain. period. and how all of this has gotten lost into this -- this is emblematic of how broken washington and our politics and our political discourse is. right now the president is doing nothing about it. >> chuck, where do you think this goes from here? do you think the president will reconsider calling families of fallen soldiers? >> you know, i don't know. there's so many norms we keep

breaking. i can tell you this, i think it's incidents like this that cost not one, but two former presidents, of two different political parties, to speak out on the same day, mind you, about the alarm that they are feeling and the alarm they're trying to sound when it comes to -- we're off the rails when it comes -- i think president bush called casual cruelty. president obama said the ease in which we're cruel is alarming. we're at another level now. you ask me what the fallout is from this, are you kidding me? we have polarized condolences? that's a bad place we're in. >> chuck, thank you very much. be sure to watch nbc's "meet the press," that's this sunday at 10:30. stick around for nbc 10 at issue immediately following that. all right. the warm up is back and we're loving it.

with me? >> i'm in. >> go carts to the beach. >> we'll take the go cart and go to the beach. low waves, blue skies. i don't see anybody out there, unfortunately they're all at cape may. we saw lots of people there. a beautiful, beautiful day. the temperatures around the area, 68 for all of you in coatesville. 74 in vineland. 73 in philadelphia. 73 in dover. 70 in wildwood. atlantic city at the airport, 73. even at mount pocono it's a very comfortable 64. so a really nice start as we head into the weekend. where do we go from here? how can we top this? well, we can't. we're going to see a pair of 77s over the weekend and may bounce to 78 on monday, depending on how much cloud cover we have. then we drop to 71 on tuesday and we only have to do that because it's raining. then it rains on 65 and behind on wednesday with 65 and behind the front producing this rain, it gets a little bit cooler. then we drop below average. we should be around 66 this time of year. we have definitely surpassed

that. we have plenty of it ahead of us. in fact, this is the recent outlook by noaa. they put their outlook out every fall and spring, what's is going to be like for the winter and summer. at this point, temperature wise -- they will adjust this in november, because we're going into a la nina year which there could be variables with that. it will be cold in the typical places, northern plains and far northwest portion of the upper midwest and northwest. then the rest of the country looks like it's going to be warm. where you don't see any coloration, that's supposed to be average. so what about us here in philadelphia? well, it looks like we possibly could see temperatures that are above average. there's a 33% chance that we will see above average temperatures. and that's a pretty good chance when they factor it into these types of climate forecasts. even warmer for the folks in new england. we'll have to wait and see if this actually pans out. we'll talk in the days ahead about what type of snowfall it looks like we might get.

we're not talking about the cold and snow for today. doppler radar is very quiet. there is nothing out there in the air. we have high pressure that's keeping all the storm systems away. it's kind of locked all of this warmth into our area. now, there is a storm system making its way on to the pacific northwest. it's digging in deeply and you can make out some snow taking place in some of the northern rockies and moving into parts of montana. that cooler air will come our way, but it isn't going to bring us snow. it's going to take us back to where we should be in the 60s and maybe the low 60s. tomorrow morning, you're going to wake up into the upper 40s, low 50s across the area. just a couple of degrees cooler than we saw this morning. we'll see the winds still coming in out of the northwest. we have a front that's passing by to the north and it doesn't bring us anything other than a few high thin clouds and turning our winds. then for tomorrow, we're going to start to see the winds kind of turning. it looks like in the afternoon, we're going to be in the low to mid 70s. then the winds turn to the southeast. we'll cool down overnight into the upper 50s. for sunday, we're going to once

street, they're millenials, they don't carry a checkbook. instead they pay their rent through the ease of websites on their phones. they're panicked right now. they don't know where their money went. the landlords say it's not their fault. the online processing site doesn't just handle local payments, they're nationwide. amanda brown isn't complaining to her landlord. she's worried about him. >> i was sitting there like, oh, okay. what do i do now if my landlord hasn't gotten the rent? >> reporter: brown along with hundreds of local college students paid their october rent through erentpayment.com. >> essentially the money was taken from our tenants and then never transferred to me. >> reporter: elizabeth qualm, who owns two dozen homes is out $8,000 this month. a handful of payments are being held up by erentpayment.com and

a processor they use. we tried to reach them both but got no answers. other than a statement saying they're filing for bankruptcy protection and $4 million is being held at bay. in new jersey renters have rights are concerned. but this issue is proving to be more cumbersome than a day of handyman repair. >> i'm not paying again. >> i don't know if i'm going to see this money. i don't know what my resource is at this point. >> reporter: while we were talking to students in this community, we did two other things. we reached out to local banks and td bank is one of them that's helping students. they're inviting customers who were affected by this to come into the local branch and fill out those dispute forms. also, a local accountant explained to me that if the

and stuff we don't want to talk about. shots fired at police in philadelphia early this morning. officials tell us it happened as officers tried to stop a robbery suspect. the man ran down an alley near robins avenue. no officers were hurt. >> a community in chester county is coming together after several race-related incidents this morning. students held a silent show of unity. they could be seen standing arm in arm in the school's football stadium. they gathering was in response to this, several students pose ing with pumpkins. some of the teens are from the coatesville school district. it's the second racially charged incident involving students there in the last several weeks. here's a look at the stories making headlines across our region tonight. atlantic county, police want to find philip campos. he's accused of stealing from a

convenience store in atlantic city. down south in kent county, three dogs rescued after being found severely malnourished. they're now well enough to be adopted. they were removed from the house near dover. officials charged their owner with nearly 500 counts of animal cruelty, 29 other animals found in the house will be available as soon as they're healthy. in philadelphia, a case of credit card fraud has the attention of philadelphia police tonight. police say this is the suspect caught using that stolen card. they say the actual owner still has the original in his possession. authorities believe the suspect is using a cloned card. call police if you can help. providing the supplies to save lives. the governor announced first responders across the state are receiving 60,000 additional narcan kits. they're used to reverse life threatening overdoses from

wednesday. after that, yeah, the chill is back. grab the jacket for the end of next week. it will be a big cooldown. the low to mid 60s which is where we should be this time of year. we're so spoiled. we've been dealing with this abnormally warm weather. everything on the radar is quiet. we have a few high thin clouds. there's a system that passed by to the north. it's turning our winds to the north and northwest and that will knock us down a couple of degrees. upper 40s, low sgifrt50s. the skies remain clear. we have a system further to the west,i the northern rockies, an it will head its way across the country. that's where the cooler air is. you can see snow in the northern rockies. we're not going to have any snow. but we'll get back to normal. we'll have a normal fall by the end of next week. when you wake up tomorrow morning you'll be looking at winds out of the north and the mid and upper 40s across the area. tomorrow, winds start to turn to the southeast.

it will be cooler along the beaches. upper 60s, maybe low 70s away from the beach. mid and upper 70s across philadelphia. sunday, pretty much the same thing. we're going to be looking for those mid 70s in philadelphia. with cooler temperatures by about five to ten degrees along the jersey shore because of those southeast winds. monday, the clouds invade. we do have the wind out of the southeast. temperatures by 11:00 in the morning up to 66. we are going to be looking at an isolated shower in the lehigh valley. 72 by 1:00 in the afternoon. still dry for the eagles game. it looks like maybe by the end of the game, 11:00, 65 degrees. we could see an isolated shower. these are very warm temperatures. 69 will be your kick off temperature. for tonight, 48 in philadelphia, 47 in the suburbs. 51 in south jersey. jersey shore, 54. delaware, 52. tomorrow, look at our sky. the forecast model, blue skies
