a 3-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was shot in head. his dad did not pull the trigger. why tonight he's under arrest. picture perfect. another day of warm weather all across the region. when it could soon start to feel like fall again. story of survival. we'll update you on the progress of these baby girls nearly a year after local doctors gave the conjoined twins new life. nbc10 news starts now. good evening. i'm denise nakano. a philadelphia father is now facing charging while doctors try to save his son. last night we told you about the 3-year-old boy shot in the head by his older brother. drew smith is live at temple hospital. drew, how is the boy doing now? >> reporter: well, denise, unfortunately his condition has

not improved. police now telling us he is very critical here at temple hospital. meanwhile, his father is facing charges, including endanger the welfare of his son. we went back to the neighborhood in the tioga section of the city. people told us there they wanted to give the family space and declined to speak with us. the mother, father and two uninjured brothers had not returned to that home since the shooting. investigators say that parents weren't home around 3:00 yesterday afternoon when a 6-year-old got his hands on a gun and shot his younger brother in the forehead. i asked police whose gun is it and is it legally owned? the department did not have those answers for us tonight, but neighbors in that area are telling us they're pray for a miracle for this 3-year-old child. we're live outside temple hospital. i'm drew smith, nbc10 news. >> to chester now, where police are investigating after four people were shot while playing a game of pickup basketball last

night. more than two dozen people witnessed that shooting that sent two men and two women to the hospital. the incident was just the latest in a round of violence in the area. nbc10's lauren mayk was at that shooting where she found many in the community still on edge today. >> reporter: residents tell me some of those shot were sitting here on benches enjoying the beautiful weather when the shooting started. this all happened as there was a crowd in this area in a gathering spot that includes a basketball court and a community garden. >> it's like a machine gun. >> reporter: iris white describes the gunfire she heard outside her home. >> i didn't know whether to run or what, you know what i mean. my grandson was playing. >> reporter: the shooting happened in the bennett homes development. police believe someone fired down on people here, perched above the crowd on concord avenue. they say whoever is responsible used a rifle and pistol and

a .45 caliber weapon they haven't identified yet. people got down low and tried to hide. four people were shot ages 18 to 24. as we talked to iris white about it, we saw police cars speed by. >> there they go. off to the race. >> reporter: less than two miles away, we found police on the scene of a shooting on fourth street. officers gathered next to a playground. >> i've grown used to hearing gunshots. it's unfortunate we have to deal with that. >> at bethenny baptist church, this pastor says he's working with groups of other faith leaders to try to stem violence in chester. >> we have to do something. it's getting out of hand. >> reporter: the church is just a few blocks from where the shots sprayed into the crowd. the basketball court and the garden were quiet today. these residents staying home. >> i'm staying close because i know once anything goes down, i'm staying in my house. >> reporter: in chester, i'm lauren mayk. >> police tell us they're investigating five shootings since friday afternoon. in all, eight people were shot.

our other top story, the summer-like temperatures. take a look at this family we caught a look at catching a ride. the sun is setting in center city. here 15 i live look at the art museum, whiff provided some nice sunshine out there. time for the nbc10 first alert neighborhood. violet to? >> how spoiled have we gotten lately? it has been a beautiful week. lots of sunshine. temperatures into the 70s for several days in a row. right now, at philadelphia at 70. temperatures starting to come down pretty quickly now that the sun is setting a little earlier. to the north and west, in the mid-60s already. redding at 69. again, our radar and satellite showing us mostly clear skies. high clouds coming in out of the west. keep things dry through tonight. no weather-related issues in terms of any rainfall but we do have some rain we're keeping an eye on. our next rain maker is off to the west.

ex-tening from southern canada all the way down into parts of the deep south. see some of the moisture starting to increase out ahead of it. through the next couple of hours, do keep things dry, although i am expecting a little bit of fog to develop during the overnight hours. tomorrow looks cloudy. perhaps a little bit of drizzle. the eagles game tomorrow night, a chance of a shower, mostly late in the game. tuesday is going to bring us the heavy rain. we'll talk about that in just a few minutes. >> take a look at the damage to the cvs. slammed into the store on ridge avenue and domino lane. see broken glass from one of the store windows. the driver was taken to the hospital. no one inside the store was hurt. a police officer is recovering tonight after crashing his patrol motorcycle in northeast philadelphia. it happened just after midnight on roosevelt boulevard and lubbock street. we're told he's expected to be

okay. no word on what caused the crash. a driver is under arrest after ditching his car on train tracks in south philadelphia. nbc10 on columbus boulevard near washington avenue. that's where police say the driver abandoned his car after a chase. officers caught him nearby. he's suspected of driving under the influence. better and more frequent service. that's what they say -- to parts of northeast philadelphia and beyond. nbc10 was there as the boulevard direct bus started rolling early this morning. the route goes between the frank fighter transportation center and in sham new mall. they arrive and depart more often and make fewer stops. nothing like taking a long walk with a friend. that's what these folks did in brynn mar. it was all part of the annual philly friendship walk. the brain child of the philly friendship circle. the organization creates safe spaces for children with special

needs to socialize and interact with older teens. the walk raises money for the group. condolence call controversy. the president's latest social media attack on florida congresswoman frederica wilson. separated at birth. once joined at the head, how these formerly conjoined twin girls are continuing their recovery. when you're a double-dipping pension-padder like steve sweeney, it's important to maintain a certain... lifestyle. that's why sweeney spent over a hundred grand of his campaign funds on high-priced meals and other gifts.

president trump is not letting go of a flight with a florida congresswoman after she criticized his words of condolence to a military widow. president trump again today going after frederica wilson, tweeting, whacky congresswoman wilson is the gift that keeps on giving for the republican party. a disaster for dems. the president is courting democrats in his attempt to get a tax reform deal passed by the end of the year. the house is back in session tomorrow.

espn's host jemele hill will be back on the air tomorrow after a two-week suspension. hill was sidelined for violating the network's social media guidelines. the offending tweet was a response to comments made by dallas cowboys owner jerry jones. it was hill's second social media incident in as many months. back in september, hill called president trump a white supremacist on twitter. secretary of state rex tillerson is in the middle east trying to broker a better relationship between saudi arabia and iraq. tillerson arrived yesterday. saudi arabia is his first stop of a week-long trip overseas. tillerson is expected to discuss healing the rift between the gulf arab states and qatar and ending civil wars in syria and yemen. u.s. officials said the secretary will urge the saudis to fund projects to rebuild war-ravaged cities in iraq. tillerson will visit, pakistan,

india, qatar this week. close to 10,000 people came to philadelphia's art museum today to raise money for diabetes research. nbc10 at the diabetes one walk. started in philadelphia 20 years ago and now they're the global leader in type one diabetes research. for this family, the walk is personal. >> we started about five years ago. our father is diagnosed over 20 years ago. his father before him. so it goes in our family. you know, it's a good reason to get all of the family together for a good cause. >> through the walk, the organization has raised $1 billion nationwide. still ahead, fined in philly. why the celtics' die irving is lighter in the pocket after his team made a stop last week. and after a beautiful, beautiful week, we've got some rain to talk about along with some cooler temperatures for the second part of the work week. details coming up in my first

in philadelphia college students wealth a passion for classic cars and history joined forces today to save jewelers row. put 25 modern and classic sports cars on display for people to enjoy and the students teamed up with the preservation alliance. the ors is fighting to keep toll brothers from demolishing five buildings to build condos. >> looking around, looking at the f all the buildings, the antiquity of it and the architecture, it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't here. >> took part, to donate some of the proceeds to the cause. heartwarming pictures toonlt from the children's hospital of philadelphia. this is abby and earn. they were conjoined twins attached at the head. one year ago, the little girls

underwent their first surgery to be separated. and look at them now. the 15-month-old girls and their parents are from north carolina. while erin is home with her family, abby is still in the hospital. boy, has it been a beautiful week. we've had a lot of sunshine these last several days and above normal temperatures virtually the entire week. now, we do have some changes on the way for this upcoming week. let's take a look at some of our stories in the short-term. fog develop mostly during the overnight hours, let's say after midnight and become especially dense during the overnight hours and potentially for your morning commute. that's certainly something you want to keep in mind as yo you head out the door tomorrow. humidity return as we head back to work on monday. most of the afternoon looks relatively quiet. again, talk about some rain coming up. here is your future fog here. it looks like by the midnight hours, again, start to see some patchy fog develop, but really

becoming dense during the overnight hours. here is the potential visibility for the morning hours. about two miles in philadelphia, perhaps a mile or less. especially to the north and west. in the morning, give yourself some extra time as you head out the door. in terms of rainfall, the front stretching all the way down from southern canada to st. louis and memphis. locally heavy rain embeted in there, however, as it approached, we'll potentially see the threat for some thunderstorms. actually in the margin signal risk area for some strong to potentially locally severe storms. again, this would be as we head into tuesday. out ahead of that, we'll start to see the moisture increase later tonight and into tomorrow. as that front passes, we'll see the pattern change. you can see that cooler air mostly settle to the north and west now starting to invade central portions of the country. sort of kick out that warmer air to the east and that's going to change the weather pattern as we head into the second part of the week. in terms of temperatures, tomorrow, cloudy, perhaps a passing shower, but i think it's going to be mostly an overnight thing where the showers start to

become a little bit more numerous. 10:30, perhaps midbay during the eagles game tomorrow. nothing long standing. as we head into tuesday, the showers and thunderstorms approach from the west. potentially heavy in some spots continuing eastward, it's really not until wednesday morning that it clears for most spots, but it looks like it could potentially linger into parts of delaware or the shore. that's something to keep in mind for some of our southern areas. head into monday, cloudy on the humid side with a passing shower. not as we head into tuesday, however, that the rain stars to become a little bit more on the heavy side. that's something we'll need to watch out for for every the course of the next couple of days. you'll need to grab the umbrella for the upcoming week. monday not looking so bad. watch out for that patchy fog early. a little on the cloudy side, tuesday looks like it's going to be when the rain can be heavy and that's going to put an end to this very long stretch of

it can be on the dense side. again, tomorrow morning as you head out to work, make sure for gives yourself a little extra time. temperatures mostly in the 50s as we get the day started. through the afternoon, still in the 70s. well above normal as you head back to work for your monday. additional cloud cover, perhaps a passing shower, maybe a patchy drizzle. one of those humid and sort of damp days, especially as the afternoon and evening wear on. not thinking we'll have any big problems for the eagles game tomorrow night, but, again, can't rely -- a passing shower, towards the end of the game. with that being said, it's really tuesday we'll start to see the heavy rain and maybe even some thunderstorms move in. we actually need the rain. it's been quite some time. so that will be beneficial, but, again, some strong thunderstorms possible and then wednesday starts to clear up. >> by midweek, fall arrives. all right, thanks. we'll see you tonight after football.
