colleagues when he walked away from his post. morgan radford is at ft. bragg. good morning. >> reporter: starting this morning, the army will decide bowe bergdahl's punishment. it comes down to one single military judge, who will determine whether or not he spends his life behind bars. bowe bergdahl opening up in an exclusive interview with britain's "sunday times" as he awaits a verdict on his future. >> the people that are to the point that say just shoot him, you can never convince them to change their minds. >> reporter: the army sergeant leaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior in the line of the enemy. he highlighted problems in his unit. shortly after, he was captured by the taliban and imprisoned for five years. >> every day, basically, at some point in time, i tell myself

found guilty in the first place. they can go to the judge and say he was trying to accept responsibility for what he's done. >> reporter: the sentencing hearing is expected to last well into the week. in addition of facing prison time, he could be stripped of his rank and pay and be dishonorably discharged. lawmakers are demanding answers about that ambush attack on u.s. soldiers in niger and the military's presence there. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is joining us from the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. beyond all of the political sparring, so many unresolved questions, three weeks after that deadly ambush, leaving senators to believe the white house has not been worth coming with details about the military presence in niger and pressing for answers. this morning, more unanswered questions over what went wrong in niger, an attack that claimed the lives of la david johnson and three other soldiers.

they had a bone spur. that is wrong. that is wrong. >> reporter: if we're going to ask every american to serve, every american should serve. he never mentions the president by name. but mccain and president trump have engaged in tough words before. for all the criticisms that donald trump faced since the beginning of the campaign, his vietnam deferments were low on that list. that appears to have changed in a hurry. back to you. >> peter, thanks very much. the president also talking about taxes. during a sunday conference call, he urged republicans to rally behind a senate-passed budget bill so they can move on his tax reform plan. one proposal now being considered would significantly reduce the tax-free amount you can contribute to your 401(k). here to talk about that is jim cramer from "mad money." 401(k)s are hugely popular.

what are the changes? >> you can get an $18,000 break. meaning, you don't have to pay taxes on the first money you put in. you pay taxes after. 24,000 people over 50. the principal way we save in this country. the principal way the middle class can sock away $5 million. this is what we do to have something for retirement. >> what's ill-advised? what are the rumors telling us? >> they cut it to $2,400. this would be the notion of being able to save if you thought social security would go away or get diminished, the notion that you would put away something. this would stop the whole incentive. we're not good savers in this country. the one thing we have done right is the 401(k). people have embraced it. people put away the money. take long-term thinking. pay taxes on the way out much later. this is something the government has done that's great. >> it's scary just listening to you talk about it.

>> sure. >> what are the odds something like this might happen? >> the industry is very powerful. they will go against it. but more importantly, this is the middle-class tax break. are you really going to help the middle-class, as the president says, and then take away the number one tax break? does that cut it down to ribbons? >> let me go back to the actual procedure. 401(k)s. no taxes now. taxes when you take the benefit years down the road. there's a roth account, which is the flipside of that. taxes now. no taxes down the road. would that be an alternative? >> it would make sense. but what people love is not paying taxes now. they get to have that mown compounded. it's a real incentive. it's not an incentive when you're playing with post-taxed dollars. this works because you think, i'm saving for the future, putting away money. if you have paid taxes, they won't do it. they won't do it. and that's why i don't think this has much chance to pass.

>> all right, jim. thank you very much. also this morning, we are hearing for the first time from the pennsylvania woman who was held captive by a taliban-linked extremist group for five years. stephanie gosk is here with what she is saying. >> caitlin coleman and joshua boyle was rescued. she has remained silent. this morning, coleman is breaking that silence, making sure she refprefers to go by he married name, caitlin boyle. adding for now, she is not ready to describe the horror her family lived through for five years. this morning, caitlin boyle remains in a canadian hospital. a member of the family says she is suffering from exhaustion and emotional stress. in an e-mail, from an account her husband says the family shares, caitlin gave one of her first public statements, after five years of captivity in

afghanistan. it reads in part, one part of our imprisonment that we can take pride in was our schooling of the boys. we had no educational supplies but we did as much as we could in the circumstances. caitlin describes using cardboard boxes and scraps of fabric to work on projects. now being free, i am rejoicing that their homeschooling will continue with resources that make it broader and more money. the boyles have three children. two sons, ages 4 and 2. and a 6-month-old daughter. joshua boyle says a fourth child, an infant daughter, was killed in captivity. the family was rescued less than two weeks ago. he and his wife were in afghanistan in 2012 to help the afghan people. they were kidnapped by a militant group. returning home has been a total shock, he told us, especially for his wife. >> her religious faith gets her

through. i think that is and her love of being a mother, is really all that's getting her through right now. >> reporter: caitlin e-mailed her hometown in pennsylvania, "the york daily record." the messages to the boyle family criticized the pressure put on her to speak about the ordeal. why don't i have the right to just be myself and be with my husband and children? adding, everybody says, no, you have to come out and talk about it. but no. no, i don't. and everybody nice has said it's my choice and i can talk when i want and to whom i want. when asked if she might return to the u.s., the mother of three said, it was too soon to say for sure. but if they return to her hometown, she looks forward to sharing her childhood experiences with her children. we're told that caitlin's mother has been to visit her in the hospital, where caitlin has been for a week. >> thank you so much.

an update on hurricane relief efforts for puerto rico. the senate is pushing ahead on a hurricane relief package that would give that island a badly-needed infusion of cash. the measure gives funds and jump-starts recovery efforts in states like florida and texas. in the meantime, chuck schumer is calling on the president to name a single official to oversee and coordinate relief efforts in puerto rico. schumer says the current federal response there has been disorganized, slow-footed and dismanaged, his words. a month of the hurricane hit that island, 80% is without power. 20% loacks running water. let's get a check of the morning weather with al. >> thanks for spending time with us. if you're in the eastern half of the u.s., looking at strong stuff. this is the same system that caused big problems in the

sexual relationship. and that he repeatedly harassed her and send her pornography. o'reilly's attorney said, "the times" printed leaked information provided by an anonymous source to embarrass o'reilly. "the o'reilly factor" was one of the biggest shows on cable news, until o'reilly was fired in april after other sexual allegations unsurfaced. this new one is the sixth against o'reilly. according to "the times," they have totaled about $45 million. 21st century fox said they did not know the details of the o'reilly's contract when they re-signed him. they used that clause to fire o'reilly and says it has taken action to transform fox news

savannah's on assignment. >> we have a lot to get to. let's start with the news at 8:00. there's a real story coming out of florida that has a lot of people concerned. police in tampa, have intensified their search for a possible serial killer. three people with no apparent links to each other, have been shot and killed in less than two weeks in one neighborhood there. kerry sanders joins us with the latest on the investigation. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: matt, police have very little to go on. but they have one piece of evidence that may help them find this potential serial killer. it's this surveillance video. this video, which is awfully hard to determine who that person is, walking with a hoo e hoodie. walking on a hoodie on a night that wasn't that cold. may be the personal of interest as a potential serial killer. the three victims did not know each other. but they note in this case, nobody has any connections or similarities.

there was a vigil in the neighborhood here last night. people walking with candles to remember the three victims. but also to unify the neighborhood to say that we can stand up. we can keep our eyes open. and we can let the police know there are increased patrols in the area. as well as guardian angels, a group that people haven't heard of for a long time. they're out patrolling, as well. keeping their eyes and ears open. the fear here, matt, is this person can strike again. >> thank you very much. army deserter bowe bergdahl will face a military judge to decide his punishment. last week, he pleaded guilty to charges of desertion and misbehavior in the enemy. he was released five years later in a controversial exchange for five taliban detainees. two servicemen who were injured while searching for him are

expected to receive testify at that sentencing hearing. a man who reportedly planned to bomb a miami area shopping mall is making his first court appearance today. the suspect was reportedly inspired by isis. but there's no indication that he actually had contact with that group. when he was arrested friday, he was allegedly planning to detonate a bomb, which was a harmless device supplied by undercover fbi agents. a red flag fire warning is up for southern california. record heat, low humidity and gusty winds create the most dangerous wildfire conditions in several years. but crews are ready, even weeks after battling historic fires in the north. crisises, that god gives you strength you didn't know you had. it brings out the best in people sometimes when these things happen. >> in the book you say, god controls how much heat, how much pain, how much adversity you will face. if you take the00 and the fires out west, and the tragic shooting in las vegas, it's only natural for someone like me or anyone else to question faith. and say, if god has a plan and god wants the best for us, how can he put us through this? >> we don't live in a perfect world. god gives us our own free will. people get to choose. and in the scripture, god never promised we would be free from difficulties. when i say that god controls the heat, it means that god won't let you go through anymore than you can bear. loss, these things are difficult. you find a strength and a peace that only god can give you.

>> let's discuss how it worked out in your own life. in 1999, your dad passed away. here's a son, losing a father. in your case, it was compounded by the fact that your dad was the man you followed. you had to fill those shoes in very real terms. what was the challenge like for you? who did you turn to other than god? >> i had family. my wife was supporting. he was my best friend, too. we traveled the world together. and he was suddenly taken with a heart attack. and i experienced it firsthand. i mourn my father. i miss him. but i felt a peace. i'm not bitter. i'm not angry. and also, what i thought might be my darkest time, it launched me into what i'm doing today. i never dreamed i'd be a minister. >> did you have that level of confidence that things would be okay? and i'm going towards the filling his shoes side of things. that's a daunting task.

>> it was. and i had never ministered before. but i felt like i was supposed to do it. that's why it's easy to encourage people that you have gifts in you don't know. you have talents. sometimes god uses us to push us into a new level of our destiny. when we don't fight everything that goes wrong. we don't like losing a loved one. you don't fight it and believe that god is still in control. >> you had never ministered before that. now, i look at the numbers. 50,000 people listen to your sermons, locally. 10 million or so watch you on tv. i've watched on tv. and i've looked at the faces on the people in that church. they are glued to every word. do you find that responsibility daunting, knowing that so many people are literally judging or basing their lives on what you're telling them? >> i do. more than daunting.

i take it seriously. i try to pray and find out what i'm supposed to say. just be careful with my words. and realize that people are putting weight. you have a responsibility to influence what god has given you. i didn't know how it would happen. we're here today. >> do people come to you weeks after hearing one of your sermons, and say, poster osteen, it didn't work out the way you promised it would work out? >> sure. there are times. a lot of them tell how it helped them. i go back to that basic truth. god has you in the palm of his hand. what you're facing is not a surprise to him. in those difficult times you have to choose to believe. and i don't tell everybody it will work out the way they thought. i wish it would. but sometimes it didn't. >> this is from the book, as well. i thank god for my friends. but i learned to thank god for my enemies, too. i don't. i don't know why. that's a nice way to be able to live your life.

jodal jodalonsmyth. >> i was the mistress of the therapist. and erik confessed to the therapist. we were having an affair. and i went to police with information that was a taped confession. and they let them used the taped confession in the trial. that's one of the reasons they were convicted. >> the relationship between your character and the therapist was crazy on so many different levels. it must have been fun to play that sort of role. >> it is fun to play that role. it made me laugh. i was reading the script, it's disturbing. when i got to the scenes of her and the therapist, it made me laugh. she was living in a house with his family and his children. it's just wild to think about that. >> let's touch on that for a second. in reality, your character, moves into the home with the

therapist, his wife and children. >> in real life, he told his wife that she was a patient. and he was a sex therapist, which was disturbing. he had done it in the past with a babysitter and assistant. they were living in the maids room, while he was having an affair with them. he was an abusive person, actually. >> preparing for the role of this person, did you meet her? did you see interviews? how did you figure out how to play her properly? >> i didn't get to meet her. she did two different diane sawyer specials i can watch. i got to see her love poetry that they sent to each other. it was interesting. yeah. >> you're also directing. >> yes. >> i did a movie about sexism in hollywood and sexual harassment is a theme of it. it's a sex comedy. one of the backdrops is being a woman in hollywood and dealing with sexism. it's timely, i guess. >> did that happen to come up at this time? >> it's something that women are

brandy malloy. and the great martha stewart. all right, we're going to make something different. i'm going to start with you, brandy. what are we cooking up? >> this is a seven-layer candy bar dip. this is insane. amazing. you can use any candy bars you want. >> twix bars. >> lower on the bottom, it will take longer for it to melt. we will add our favorite candies. >> what is this? this is good. milky way, snickers, twix. >> look what we're doing. sticking them all in. >> there's no rhyme or reason. you want to layer it like a seven-layer dip. we're going to top it with these salt salted caramel pieces. and then, peanut butter m&ms.

we're going to pop this into the oven. >> look what is happening. >> it gets soft and gooey. then, we're going to -- >> look at what's happening. >> take the caramel. >> this is my favorite day, ever. >> the peanut butter, the twix. and we're going to garnish it with peanut m&ms. this is the best part. potato chips. the sweet and the salty. >> you call that a dessert. peshaw. joslyn, take it away. >> we're making milky way cake. it starts like you would with any cake. but we're adding milky ways and butter. >> go ahead. >> you want to melt this down until it's nice and smooth. >> how long does that take? >> five to ten minutes over a medium-low heat. we're going to get really smooth and nice and silky right there. we're going to go to a regular

cake. we have butter and sugar that's started creaming. and we started adding in our eggs. >> one egg at a time. >> you know, maybe three. you can cheat here. we get all our eggs in. and we have butter milk, this is going to make it superlight and very, very, very, very moist. >> oh, no. you get the vanilla in. you get the flour in. then, we add the milky ways and the butter right into our batter. and you get this. and we're going to bake this at 350 for 50 to 55 minutes. comes out so delicious. so moist. >> let me try. >> you got to try it. put some chocolate frosting on it. it's amazing. >> go ahead. martha? >> take it away. >> all right. >> day of the dead. very nice. >> day los muertos. celebrating all your dead friends. very pleasant.
