closed. nbc10's stephen fisher has been at the scene all day long. >> you spoke to people there in the community. >> reporter: you said it. 40 years worth of history. you can see all the debris. it's covering the width of south street here. we talked to a lot of people around here today. some were shocked and others in disbelief saying a piece of them was taken away. heavy flames and what seemed like neverending smoke spilled out of the restaurant and into the south street air. with blownout windows and charred remains many watched in awe was 40 years of memories went up in smoke. >> there have been a lot of bachelorette parties. >> piwhen you have a place you gather with friends and you lose

a busy and important holiday season. reporting live on south street. steven fisher. nbc10 news. hundreds of people posted comments about the loss of this iconic restaurant on south street. you can leave a message on our facebook page or on the nbc10 app. a pet store next door was also heavily damaged and two dogs died in the blaze. to a developing story. in the past hour philadelphia police gave us new information about the case of the two teenagers murdered in south philadelphia. one went to st. joe's prep. the other, mastery charter school. denise nakano is joining us live with brand-new information. what did you find out? >> reporter: keith, philadelphia police say this is all over a petty neighborhood argument between two groups of teenagers. and they're back on the scene. homicide detectives are out at 12th and rittner.

>> reporter: a crowd gathered outside the home. students from the school where he went to school and played for the hockey team. >> it's devastating for everyone. family, his friends. >> reporter: at the end of the block the 16-year-old was gunned down in south philadelphia last night. khalil miller also died after being shot in the chest. a neighbor of the 16-year-old student of the charter school says he has known mill for years. >> respectful. he spoke to me every day. i seen him coming home and leaving. he was a good kid. >> reporter: police say a neighborhood argument ended in gunfire. >> one of the tragic mixes. years ago it used to be fist fights. now guns. now we have two tragedies. >> reporter: an open grieving

process. >> today we had a tremendous mass where everybody grieved together. a lot of counselors were there. >> reporter: the families mourning privately. >> they're only 16 years old, for crying out loud. >> reporter: grief counselors have been available at both schools. a vigil is planned at the scene in south philadelphia tonight at 7:30. live outside police headquarters. denise nakano. nbc10 news. we checked on how violent a year it has been in philadelphia. today philadelphia police released a statistic. 253 people have been killed so far this year. up 10% from the same time last year. more than 1,000 people have been shot. it's been slow going on route 38 in burlington county after this accident. a fedex tractor-trailer toppled near the mount holly bypass in haynesport. route 38 was shut down because the trucks took down some wires. we just checked and the westbound lanes are still closed. the driver was taken to the

and low 40s. we'll talk about that, the weekend warm upand the next batch of rain. fats domino died today at the age of 89. ♪ on blueberry hill >> domino was best known for his hits "blueberry hill" and "ain't that a shame." he was born and raised in new orleans and broke into the rock and roll secene in the 1940s. he made numerous appearances on american bandstand here in philadelphia. harry connick jr. on twitter said "rest in peace, fats domino. see you on top of the blueberry hill in the sky." a philadelphia councilman is leading the fight against an

ordinance that bars restaurants from staying open past 11:00 at night in residential areas. he is planning a rally against discrimination thursday morning at city hall. oh and others have said that chinese takeout restaurants are repeatedly cited under the ordinances while pizza shops that stay open light haven't been. police suspended enforcement of the ordinance while the city council tries to rework the law and ensure it's not applied unfairly. [ bag pipes ] philadelphia is remembering a fallen hero. a crowd gathered today at the plaque dedication ceremony for officer thomas bray in the northeast. he was laid to rest in november of 2001. he drowned while trying to help the coast guard free a stuck buoy in the delaware river. his children spoke about what the new plaque means to them 16 years after losing their father. >> a lot of comfort.

a lot, a lot, a lot of pride. a lot of love. >> officer bray worked for the philadelphia police department for 23 years. so skyforce10 for breaking news in camden county. you see the smoke and flames on the second floor. pouring from the area. this is a house fire in merchantville, that's camden county on woodlawn avenue. firefighters have arrived at the scene. there are no injuries. we'll make sure we stay up to date. we see a firefighter in fact getting up to the second level to fight the flames. as soon as we know more, we'll make sure that you find out about it. in the meantime, the white house siding with the nfl in a sports betting case out of new jersey. the garden state wants to offer gambling on sports at its casinos and racetracks. the nfl and other professional sports leagues oppose the idea.

the trump administration filed a brief with the supreme court supporting the leagues. the court is skettlcheduled to the case in december. good news for new jersey drivers. tolls will not be going up on the turnpike. the turnpike authority expects increased traffic to bring in more money. for the sixth straight years, tolls will not increase. the gold star father who clashed with president trump during last year's election will be in philadelphia tonight. khizr khan is unveiling a memoir. he made headlines last summer when he spoke at the democratic national convention. he told the story of his son killed in iraq and famously offered to give his copy of the constitution to donald trump. a military judge says he hasn't decided whether to dismiss the case against army sergeant bowe bergdahl. last week buhe pleaded guilty. they argue comments from then

candidate now president trump many the sergeant cannot get a fair sentence. mr. trump has called bergdahl a traitor, indicating he should be shot. happening right now, president trump is expected to touch down in dallas on marine one any minute. the president is meeting with officials to talk about hurricane harvey relief efforts. earlier today the president gave hus take on a new report that linked hillary clinton's campaign to the so-called russia dossier. that document is said to link the trump campaign to russia. erin coleman is following those developments in the breaking news center. >> reporter: president trump weighing in on a new report that revealed hillary clinton's presidential campaign paid a company to dig up dirt on her opponent. the president posted on twitter this morning that he is the victim in all of this. his comments follow news that the clinton campaign helped to fund opposition research. that research led to a now infamous dossier on donald trump's potential ties to russia. the president has strongly denied the allegations in the

dossier. he addressed the matter with reporters today. >> and now, only because it's going to come out in a court case, they said, yes, they did it, they admitted it, and they were embarrassed by it. but i think it's a disgrace. it's just really -- it's a very sad -- it's a very sad commentary on politics in this country. >> meanwhile, the president is lashing out at two republican senators who criticized him. he tweeted today the reason flake and corker dropped out of the senate race is simple. they had zero chance of being elected. now act so hurt and wounded. arizona senator jeff flake became the second gop senator to announce he is not seeking reelection. he stunned colleagues by making the announcement on the senate floor tuesday. in making the announcement he said he cannot work with a president he considers dangerous to democracy. flake appeared on the "today" show this morning. >> if he continues with the kind of tweeting and behavior that's just unbecoming of the president

we ought to at least stand up did say so. >> another retiring republican senator, bob corker of tennessee criticized the president on tuesday. corker said he regrets his vote for donald trump and would not support him again. in dismissing the criticism from flake and corker the president pointed out he received several standing ovations at a senate republicans lunch tuesday at the capitol. meanwhile, reince priebus's new job is an old one. the former white house chief of staff is rejoining his former law firm. priebus will be president and chief strategist at the firm's office in washington, d.c. he left the trump administration in july. former president george h.w. bush is responding to an actress who has accused him of touching her several years ago. she says the incident took place while she was posing for a photo with mr. bush in 2014. in a now deleted post she wrote

the 93-year-old touched her from behind and told her a dirty joke. a spokesman for bush says the former president would never cause anyone distress and he apologizes if his attempts at humor distressed the woman. a former production assistant says harvey weinstein sexually assaulted her after her repeated refusals. more than 65 women have now made accusations from harassment to assault to rape. american airlines is under fire from the naacp. the civil rights group is warning african-americans that if they play american they could be subject to unsafe conditions and discrimination. naacp says they've watched a pattern of disturbing incidences by black passengers on their flights. american airlines says it's

disappointed and has a diverse work force and serves customers of all backgrounds. lumber liquid ators stop selling cranes made laminate flooring after it was found to contain unsafe levels of the cancer causing chemical formaldehyde. ford is recalling 73,000 full-sized vance due to a wiring problem that causes fires. the recall covers ford transit vance li vans like this one. ford says water can get into a computer module and cause corrosion that could cause an electrical short or a fire. owners should take the van to a dealer to be fixed. a crucial catch day here in philadelphia and cities around the country. a day to raise awareness about cancer and promote ways to help prevent it. former philadelphia eagles linebacker was at the event in

north philadelphia. it's a free event between the american cancer society and the nfl. just in time for halloween the ride share service lyft teaming up with the hit netphilnetflix show "stranger things." lyft is switching to strange mode. this friday and saturday to celebrate the premiere of the second season of "stranger things." during those two days lyft passengers in philadelphia will have a chance to order it's called strange mode when hailing a ride. a few lucky passengers will be picked up in a "stranger things" themed car that will allow them to experience a paranormal ride. >> if it's anything like this it has to be interesting. no thank you. >> we'll pass on that. all right. nbc10 is your official station of the philadelphia eagles. as you know. today birds fans have another reason to cheer. carson wentz won a top honor.

>> john clark is joining us. john, wentz keeps getting praise. >> seems like every day, right? >> yeah. >> carson wentz is really filling up the mvp resumé. he wins his second nfc offensive player of the week honors in his first 23 games. he leads the nfl in touchdowns with 17. becoming a big national story in the nfl. carson wentz made some unbelievable plays monday night. he threw this ball over 60 yards in the air. touchdown to matt collins. threw four touchdowns. that's 11 tds over three games. only the second eagles quarterback to do that. he was amazing. the redskins could not bring him down. one told him after the game he is houdini. he is letting teammates know he isn't letting this get to his head. he is so grounded coming from north dakota. >> he has that ability to make plays with his feet. he has the ability to create plays when they aren't there. >> he is playing lights out.

here. we can see the rain. >> do you want me to block it? if anybody could stop the rain it's probably carson wentz, right? i bet on the fact that maybe there will be a three-hour break when he is playing. it does look like we have a vigorous storm system like the one yesterday morning coming through on sunday. it comes through a little slower. at this point we have potential gusty winds, temperatures that will fall through the mid 60s. they won't change a whole lot but we will be looking at the potential of showers and thunderstorms during the game. they get lightning going out there at the stadium, they'll put everything on hold until the storms have passed. so be prepared. maybe bring the rain slicker or -- or the rain boots. right now at the beach people enjoying themselves. it's a gray day along the beaches. plenty of sunshine in philadelphia. clouds on the jersey shore. winds out of the northwest at

maybe even a sprinkle midday. then the winds shift to the south and southeast. it will be a warmer air mass greeting us saturday. it is one-day wonder because here comes the next storm system poised to make its appearance late saturday night and moving into sunday and sunday night before it clears. so 60 for tomorrow. some areas mainly in the upper 50s. 66 on friday with sunshine. 71 on saturday with sun and increasing clouds. then on sunday it will be windy with a shower or thunderstorm possible. 65 early in the day with a temperature trailing off. look at this. on monday only 58 degrees. it will feel much cooler than that. and 60 on halloween. the overnight low monday into tuesday and tuesday into wednesday, quite chilly. the kids will need the really big jacket to put over the really cool little costumes they have. guys. >> good advice. heroin doesn't discriminate. still ahead. a mother's message.

don't know the person police are looking for. nbc10's lauren mayk joins us live. what did you learn? >> reporter: keith and jacqueline, neighbors tell me they don't recognize this guy from the neighborhood. we'll show you the photo. he has a distinctive tattoo on his neck. as you can see right now. it's pretty quiet out here, but that was not the case last night. the search here on the ground and in the air stretched across this north philadelphia neighborhood. >> a lot of police, a lot of police, a lot of helicopters and the s.w.a.t. came. >> reporter: neighbors found the street blocked and police out in force. >> i only see twice. happen like that, coming, that kind of police. you know. many, many. >> reporter: the target. 19-year-old lemik conde, the getaway driver at a shooting two miles away. he escaped from a police car in handcuffs. the search for him now in its

second day. neighbors here got another surprise too. police say, when they were looking for the suspect with the help of a canine they found bundles of heroin at a nearby garage. nbc10 later saw them carrying items out of there. >> there is always a lot of traffic down there. never thought drugs really. >> reporter: it's quiet in this neighborhood today. no visible signs of officers, while police say they're still working to track down the teenage suspect who got away. >> reporter: does that make you nervous? >> no. he have been around here long enough. >> reporter: there were concerns about the drugs the police found, that they could be dangerous to officers exposed to them. i checked with the dea, and they are not involved in the case, but i am told the reason they could be concerning is because you're not expecting them in a case like this and you don't know what kind of material you're dealing with. live in north philadelphia. lauren mayk, nbc10 news. there is shock and sadness on the campus of a historically

black college in louisiana this afternoon following a deadly shooting. police were called to grambling state university early this morning. they say a student and his friend were shot and killed in a court yard after a fight began in a dorm room. it's the second shooting on the campus in two months. meanwhile. new details about the crime scene connected to the las vegas massacre. the broken windows have been replaced in the suite at the mandalay bay casino. the hotel room was still an active crime scene in the first five days after the attack. paddock killed 58 people in the october 1st massacre, the deadliest shooting in modern u.s. history. first alert weather and a live look down the jersey shore. it is going to warm back up this weekend. if you are looking for things to do.

$5200 a day. newcastle county, this is the newest member of the newark police department. he was bought thanks to the donations for the canine fund. varg needs about three months to training to get up to speed. a raccoon found in camden county tested positive for rabies. it was captured after a family called animal control when they are dog came in contact with it back on october 7th. test results just back confirmed the raccoon had rabies. also in can den counmden co. there was a job fair at the pavilion. 150 businesses took part. people had the chance to talk with representatives from a wide variety of fields from state police to sears. straight ahead on news at 4:00. the military makes a move to show its strength. also coming up next, healthy and wealthy. a new way to get young people to the doctor.

the promise of cold, hard cash may motivate diabetic teenagers to take charge of their health. research has shown teenagers are type i diabetes struggle to manage diet, exercise and insulin dosing. a new study found those with the disease with money at stake were three times for likely to monitor glucose levels. most states restrict indoor tanning for minors but many salons are not following the

as tensions rise with north korea, the united states is sending 12 of its new stealth fighters to japan. the jets cannot be easily detected by enemy drawer. the u.s. has not elaborated on the move. president trump is scheduled to travel to japan, south korea and china next month. pope francis is no stranger to sending prayers to the heavens. well, tomorrow he will do it for the first time via the phone. pope francis scheduled to call the six astronauts on the international space station. the italian astronaut is on board with three americans and two russians. he was also on the international space station in 2011 when pope benedict placed the first ever papal call to space. a british adventurer flew
