and the president wants to make grants available to people having trouble finding jobs because of their addiction. >> to understand how familying are dealing with the epidemic, nbc 10 has been following a man as he makes his way through drug recover are ri. >> we updated you on the progress one week after he started a program. hours after that story aired, he walked out of the rehab center. he headed to kensington to buy drugs. cydney long picks up the story from there. it's pretty remarkable what happened next. >> this is right. it's remarkable there are angels out there among us in the community. michael was so sincere in fighting so hard when we sat down with him yesterday, but clearly his fear of failing and the demons of detox got the better of him for a short time last night. >> this is my feelings. >> reporter: in the hours after opening up to us wednesday about his struggle with addiction and fear of living on the streets. >> freezing cold rain and crying

because just the weather alone or the starving. >> reporter: michael faced his emotions head on. in a moment of fight or flight, he was ready to run. >> he was gone. what he was doing was wrong. >> reporter: he left treatment with an anonymous ride he wound up on the streets and robbed of his blonings but knew he could get money and get high. >> ended up going to a meeting down there and walked into the meeting. somebody had seen him on the news. and said what are you doing here? what are you doing here? you're supposed to be in treatment. >> he didn't use. >> his jaw dropped and at that moment, he started being flooded with emotions. >> reporter: liberation way considers it community intervention and proof that it's a process and people care. >> the lady that scooped him up and as he stated his guardian angel made sure that he wasn't

going to leave her grips until he ended up back where he is right now. >> reporter: the troomt center staff got him back to rehab by midnight. >> success is he decided to come back. he's talking about it. >> i was able to speak with him and let him know this is where you're supposed to be. obviously, because he tried lee leaving and couldn't even do that. >> reporter: now he also told me yesterday that his biological father does plan to visit him at the treatment center this weekend, but he also said that his family is a little reluctant to become too invested until he's further along in this journey. >> you have talked to michael, become invested in him as well as the people trying to help him out since day one of rehab. what was your thought when you heard the phone ring and you hear the story? >> reporter: i had to tell you, my heart sank for him. all of us are pulling for him in this fight really to get clean. he was so positive. he was even pushing the nurses away. he didn't want to have another

dose of methadone because he's weaning off and coming off of these medical treatments to get him clean. but this is a message that it doesn't happen overnight. i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> a journey shore couple says much more needs to be done to slow the opioid epidemic. they run stevens place, a sober living home in atlantic county. it's named after their son who died after a heroin dose last year at the age of 26. the cup founded a nonprofit called stop the heroin. >> still seeing people fighting to get into treatment. people with no insurance getting short stays. >> in my heart and mind, my son dies every day. i don't know if i'm ever going to be able to fully heal. from losing him because of it's every day and they are tieg every day. >> governor christie would head

up the commission. the governor's commitment to fighting addiction has resulted in thousands more people in new jersey getting treatment. >> the nbc 10 digital team documented the kmalkt of the crisis on local families for two years. a closer look at one of the epicenters of the opioid crisis. addicts in recovery and loved ones react to the president's plan. that's tonight at 6:30 right after northbound 10 news at 6:00. new information in the murder of two teens on the south philadelphia street corner. sources tell nbc 10 police spoke to a potential witness and are questioning people in that case now. the two were shot and killed. sky force 10 was over the scene tuesday night after the

shooting. police say there was some sort of argument between the gunfire. their friends are remembering them tonight. >> i saw him two hours before that happened. i shook his hand and said what are are you doing. i said be safe. >> he was a good kid. he had good manners. >> police have been working to identify six possible suspects. poker could be coming to airports and truck stops throughout pennsylvania. the state house approved a gambling expansion bill in an attempt to balance the state's budget. the plan expands casino gambling to truck stop, airports and ten new mini casino sites. the bill now heads to the desk

of governor tom wolf. but he has only indicated he will review the plan and not promising to sign it. lawmakers say that will help raise money as they pay for the re knew plan. in washington the house passed a $4 trillion budget. the vote cleared a key hurdle toward president trump's goal of cutting taxes. the budget is a necessary step before congress can begin work on the $1.5 trillion tax cut bill. a picture perfect fall day. taking a live look now at the american flags atop the araamark building. >> definitely a chill in the air. the jackets and sweaters were out today. you can see them. >> near the philadelphia museum of art, a little cooler out there than yesterday. still not too bad, though. fall and chief meteorologist tammie souza is here. a frosty night is in store.

county, berks county, poconos, over here into southern parts of new jersey, right along the jersey shore. it does not include you. it's not including delaware. that frost advisory from 2:00 to 9:00 tomorrow morning. if you have any plans left after the first frost, this may be the one that gets them. all the outlying areas could drop to 34 and 38 degrees. you notice it does not include the city of philadelphia or delaware county. it does not include the nearby pennsylvania suburbs. much of south jersey that is actually toward the metro area. so we're going to be watching how cold it's going to get tomorrow morning. and then after that, we have a delightful warm up, but. only a one-day wonder. i'm going to have your pumpkin picture of the day and talk about a very rainy ooeagles gam and your hall wooen forecast, straight ahead. right now at 5:00, we're learning more about two rescue dogs that were killed in a south street fire that destroy ed a popular restaurant and damaged a nearby pet store.

one of the dogs was flown to philly from puerto rico following hurricane maria. the other was rescued from a boarding situation in kentucky. to northeast philadelphia where a fire broke out this morning. a two-story home caught fire on maine rid yan street. a woman inside was rush ed to te hospital. her condition is unknown tonight. the cause of the fire is under investigation. in mercer county, a a fire aled to first responders to an unexpected find in an apartment. they smelled a strong odor of marijuana and found $900,000 worth of drugs and $2,000 in cash. the owner and operator of the company is facing multiple charges in connection with this case. he's a supplier of high grade marijuana products. to breaking news right now, a school bus accident in camden. george spencer is live overhead

today the white house is racing to release thousands of documents about the assassination of president kennedy. the documents were legally supposed to be leased today, but the cia wants partins of those documents redacted. it's been 50 years since he was killed sparking conspiracy theories. what questions will the documents answer, if any? >> investigators say oswald was the lone gunman, but not everyone is convinced. >> the images are indelible. a moment in dallas that changed a nation and fuelled conspiracy theories for half a sencentury. now federal law is forcing the release of thousands of government documents about the assassination. among the key questions for historians, did lee harvey oswald act alone? did the government know more about the assassination's movements and motivation than previously revealed?

was oswald ushd cia surveillance during a trip to mexico city? >> the real story maybe is that the cia knew only seven weeks before the assassination that oswald may have threatened the president. >> despite federal law ordering the release, government officials tell nbc news it's being held up as intelligence agencies scramble to advise the white house about what information they want redacted or withheld from the files. intelligence officials indicated some of the information could revealtive information gathering med meds and sources. intelligence officials said some of the information could reveal sensitive information and sources more than 60% of americans believe kennedy's killing was a conspiracy. but federal investigations concluded oswald acted alone.

experts say it's thousands of government files, many theories, but probably still no definitive agreement about what really happened that day and why. to an island still in crisis five weeks after hurricane maria. volunteers are helping puerto rico out in a big way. late this afternoon holy family university held a food drive send off in northeast philadelphia. several palettes were loaded up today and readied for transport. the university is shipping more than 5,000 cans of food to puerto rico to be delivered to a humanitarian group there on the island. then it will be distributed to those in need. >> the whole community could come together not only the campus community, but the surrounding community. they could bring their stuff here, handle it, get it to puerto rico and it just makes me feel like the mission of the

university is being lived. >> american airlines will be transporting the goods free of charge. this comes days after the senate approved a new round of disaster aid. lawmakers approve $36.5 billion in emergency relief. the island is still struggling to reelectricity and basic services. back here at home, you definitely need a light jacket when you're outside today. this is a live picture at the navy yard in south philadelphia. it's sweater weather out there. here's a look in fairmont park. you see the expressway slow as usual about this time. perfect, though, for an evening walk out there. >> just cover up a little. meteorologist tammie souza is here.

move d off to the north. some of it never reaching philadelphia. it did hit some of the suburbs and the poconos. looking at light sprinkles. all of this activity associated with that large storm system that has been offshore. you can actually make out the swirl of the area of low pressure as it exits our area. still bringing heavy rain across new england. now we focus on the next system. look how cold it is. it's really cold enough to pull some snow into northern minnesota. it's pulling that cold air straight down across the northern plains. that cold air is headed for us. it will be a chilly one. tomorrow morning you wake up with that frost advisory in place. 38 in doylestown. 41 in philadelphia. if you're in millville, 41. 47 in atlantic city. by the time that we get into tomorrow afternoon, we're in it the low 60s across much of the

area. the exception in the 50s. and then the winds start to turn more to the southeast. so saturday morning, a little more mild. in the low to mid-40s. saturday afternoon clouds start to move in. but look at this. we're going to hit across much of the area. 70, 71 degrees. then we get into late saturday night. here comes the rain from that system that was moving into minnesota. look. and yes, that does include the eagles game. temperatures really don't make it out of the low 60s on sunday. you're going to need your slicker if you go to the eagles game. and there's another system behind that one for the middle of next week. they are just lined up like this out there at philadelphia international. this is going to be your game day forecast. we could see periods of showers and storms. it's going to be windy out there. as promised, i want to show some of the pumpkins. look at that. she has a little ghost and a

police rescuing a man suspected of stealing a pickup truck. they saw the man crash during a chase and body camera video shows them pulling the suspect from the truck. it appears he's unconscious. the man faces 36 charges. the manufacturing plant is bringing new jobs to south jersey. the cumberland county authority

broke ground on a 32,000-square foot building where food processing equipment will be manufactured. companies that graduate from the business incubator program will occupy the space. the director of the food innovation center say it is will help small companies grow. the project is funded in part by td bank. several jobs are coming to delaware. the governor was on hand for a ribbon cutting. the company manufactures an all natural bio enzyme used to improve flour products. it will improve engineering professionals. a legendary philadelphia lawyer is remembered in a new exhibit at the art museum. >> it marks the an verse are ri of the death of johnson.

besides having the smoke alarms, you need an evacuation plan to keep your family safe. >> the red cross is out to give her the missing piece of her fire safety puzzle. an escape plan. >> a lot of folks always think that when a fire happens, i'm going to have to go out the window. that may not be the case. >> reporter: she notices that a fire in the kitchen would likely leave the front door clear if she left in time. he says that's something every homeowner should think about. >> if the passage is clear to the front door, use the front door. >> come up with a planned meeting place outside. it's the corner in if front of robinson's house. this way she can see who makes it out and who is still inside. upstairs she locates all the fire alarms before noticing a problem in robinson's bedroom. the window is blocked. >> i didn't think about it. it would be in the way.

i'll have your halloween forecast, straight ahead. new details on a story from yesterday. tonight there are two people in custody in connection with a carjacking of a pizza delivery driver in west tld. that driver was beaten so badly he was in a coma for three days. police are looking for several other people responsible for last friday's attack. some of the attackers are as young as 14 years old. here's a look at some of the stories making headlines county by county across our region. the gun violence task force is getting new resources to battle gun violence. half a million dollars in the budget is going towards an anti-gun violence task force. the funding will expand resources to get dangerous weapons off the streets. 27 homicides in the city of chester this year. 13 sheriffs deputies were promoted or honored today. five were awarded for their action to disarm a suspect while

searching his house. the sheriff said these awards are to recognize and to thank the deputies for their selfless devotion. in philadelphia you're look ing at the newest tool in hands-only cpr training. the american heart association unveiled this kiosk today at the independence visitors center. the kiosk is equipped with a touch screen and practice plan manikin that practices. it's the only kiosk of its kind in the region. now hiring. dick's sporting goods says it needs more than 100 new workers in the philadelphia area for the holidays. all 14 stores locally are hiring a total of 135 part-time associates for the holidays. you can apply online or in person. the germantown shopping district may have a new look. it's part of a contest.

the winner will receive $150,000 in grant money to repair buildings with significant african-american heritage. voting runs through october 31st. you won't be seeing certainen content from two news outlets on twitter anymore opinion the social media company says it will ban ads from russia today and sputnik. both are state-sponsored russian news outlets. they tried to interfere in presidential election. twitter, google and facebook are scheduled to testify at congressional hearings next week at russian involvement in the election. anyone traveling from out of the country into the united states and philadelphia will now see extra security. starting today airlines worldwide will question passengers about their trips and their luggage. there will also be closer inspections of personal electronic devices. travelers will see more security in passenger areas and around

a massachusetts student won a high school golf tournament, but she wasn't allowed to take home the trophy. >> the reason why, heshe's a gi. she shot a 75 in the turnltd beating the second place golfer by 4 strokes. according to the massachusetts athletic association, girls can play and their scores can count in the overall team score, but girls can't win the tournament or advance to the state competition. >> i can't necessarily have the title so they gave it to the second place guy. then he offered the trophy to me, which was super nice and classty of him. >> i'll take a 75 any day of the week.
