and what he left behind. >> a new era of terrorism. right now at 11 new york city grapples with the deadliest terror attack since 9/11. investigators go over the scene which unfolded three blocks from the world trade center. eight people are dead and dozens in the hospital. >> new details about the suspect accuse dsed of the deadly awe tack. investigators found a note in the truck claiming he did it for i sis. he rented the truck from a home depot. he left there around 2 this afternoon and headed for manhattan. there's no evidence there was a wider plot. >> we have live team coverage from the scene. new details on the driver. and a closer look at the dproeing type of attack.

he joins us live from lower manhattan with the latest. >> we're just a few blocks away from the scene where police say the terror suspect jumped out of his truck around 3:00 this afternoon. just take a look behind me. this area is swarming with first responders. and officers. you can see some of the officers and first responders in the white suits. in the median they have been coming through this area. the grassy area. with flashlights for the last 15 minutes or so. obviously looking for possibly some sort of evidence. tonight we have been out here for several hours talking to witnesses. they remain on edge. >> reporter: cell phone video given to nbc10 captures students running scared. it's moments after hearing gunshots and seeing bodies from the school window.

inside, still shaking hours after investigators say a 29 year-old terror suspect intentionally ran over people blocked away from ground 0. >> i saw just two dead bodies laying down in the street. people was running. >> reporter: seconds later, dlkt detectives grabbed her and walked her away. witnesses video taped the man running around in the road. before he was shot and arrested. he had a pellet gun and paint ball gun. >> i saw man laying on the ground face down in the street. he was surrounded by police. it appeared he was injured. and next to him was a man being arrested. >> reporter: police stha driver used add home depoet truck to run over innocent people on the west side highway bike path. before running into a school bus. she's also still on edge nearly five hours later. >> i heard a gunshot. we didn't think much of it. it's halloween kids prank all

the time. and we look out the window we see people getting covered. >> once again this is a fairly new development. folks in white suits with flashlights going through that grass. they have been doing this for 15 or 20 minutes. we talked to a bunch of people. they say it will not effect their daily routine. others telling me they were real scared. walking back home. even hours after the incident happened. >> terrifying afternoon. all right. >> we have this just in. officials in argentina say five of the eight victims are citizens of the country. in new york celebrating their 30th college reunion. >> we have learned a sixth victim was from belgium. to the latest on the suspect. he's still in the hospital after being shot by police. >> authorities haven't said if

he was on any sort of watch list. we have new details about his past in new jersey and pennsylvania. keith jones continues team coverage in breaking news center. >> the suspect is out of surgery. he lived in north jersey and may have been an u ber driver. he's an old mug shot from missouri. he was charged with traffic related offenses in the poke knows. in 2012. years later the 29 year-old was arrested in central pennsylvania on similar charges. a friend tells he may have been married with kids. and drove for uber in patterson new jersey. he's originally from uz beck stan. quote a very happy guy who is no terrorist. public records show the 29 year-old had a commercial driver's license. meaning he could drive truck. he ended up renting that pickup from a home depot. we called that store but they

chose not to comment. >> of course authorities trying to talk to him at the hospital. late tonight president trump posted on twitter he is ordered homeland security to step up the extreme vetting program. he added quote being politically correct is fine. but not for this. gov nor of new york ordered increase security at high profile locations around the state. and at large public gathering. include tonight halloween parade. in addition to more officers and other security measures, police also used blocking vehicles to keep the crowds safe. we have seen more terrorist using trucks to carry out these deadly attacks. denise nakano spoke to security officials from our area about what can be done to protect the public. live in center city. >> we see security measures all around us. this large flower pot outside

police say the victim was hit by a driver in a black vehicle. possibly a hon die. around 8:00. and may have a missing side mirror and other damage. we're working to find out the victims condition. hit by a car. police say the driver and passenger dpot out of the car after it broke down on route 38. they were then hit by another vehicle. the driver of that car stopped. but that caused two other cars to crash. allen town man grateful to be alive. thanks to a delivery driver who found him stabbed inside his home. known in the neighborhood received a knock on the door around 8:00 this morning. he told neighbors the group of guys came in asking for cigarettes and stabbed him. a delivery man there to drop off his medication found him bleeding around 9:30. and called for help. the 68 year-old will need surgery be is expected to be okay. a big change to new jersey

as investigative reporter found out. not everyone agrees this horror story is finished. >> reporter: these photographs document each step in the dig at the grave site of hh holmes. part archaeology. park dark historical mystery. >> there's weird things about the story. >> reporter: he was so called murder castle hotel in chicago. brought to justice in philadelphia. and yet years after his reported execution, rumors circulate that the noted swindler may have escaped his own death. >> we knew from the story that that's what we were supposed to find. we didn't know details. >> reporter: true to historical newspaper accounts about four feet down. cox and her team encountered the layer of concrete protection he requested for his corpse the concrete had never hardened. so the team was able to easily

dig deeper. eventually arriving at a wooden box. the right size for his coffin. but em it of any human remains. >> did you think it was over at that moment. >> we did. it was frustrating. >> reporter: only half a day left to dig. the team was forced to go down further. when cox alone in the pit noticed a wooden placard in the mud and able to make out the lettering. >> you can see the hh. holmes. >> reporter: it sat atop a second coffin. some ten feet under ground. in it, they found a well preserved skeleton. covered in a block of concrete. the 19th century waistcoat visible. the hat still lodged just above the skull. and even the hair of a mustache in place. to confirm it was in fact the remains of h.h. homes. they he had not escaped his own execution. she tock a dna sample.

compared it to a sample from jeff. holmes's great great grandson. >> the best they can tell us is the dna is related. it's a person who is related to the living. >> from a scientific perspective. it was the most definite answer that dna could give. the remains have been reburied in the exact same spot here at holy cross cemetery. but he believes the test was a bust. >> the lab had a bias. which in the court of law would result in the evidence being excluded. >> he believes. dna technicians were given too much information about the case and conclusion. he worries that knowledge impacted what otherwise would have been an inconclusive result. he plans to have the sample tested again elsewhere. and in the meantime in his mind,

the skeleton in this grave remains a mystery. >> until we have the dna tested again i can't give you an answer. >> it's been a long road. he's worked on this really hard for a long time. and i think these are difficult questions. >> reporter: cox says her teams confidence goes beyond the dna test. they also turned up a preexecution physical exam of holmes. published at his death. in the journal of the american medical association. when compared to the skeleton, cox found matches. right down to the intricate gold fillings in the teeth. almost impossible to replicate. and a perfect match on three missing molars. >> this is him in profile. you can see no molar. all the teeth are missing. >> reporter: master swindler. unable to swindle his way out of death. >> from a scientific standpoint. there's no doubt.

that's for sure. we have clear skies out there tonight. a beautiful looking night. quite chilly. we hit 60s the high around nine time. highest wind gust 29 miles per hour. it was a decent fall day. we're going to drop below average to 58. for tomorrow. and up to the 70s quite a warm up thursday and friday. and back down to the 60s for the weekend ahead. the roller coaster called fall is going to continue. doppler radar. everything is quiet on the radar. clouds are trying to press into the area. associated with a storm system that's moving by to the north. and this could drag a few showers through the area tomorrow. it looks like the showers will probably be in the lee high valley. we have the north winds coming in right now keeping us cool. look at the rain activity. tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon. winds turn to the southeast. much of this is far away from the city itself. we'll have to wait and see how far this system drops south. at this point doesn't look like we'll get rain. we'll leave it in the out lying
