a very, very good man. >> as they cope with one of the worst mass shoots in u.s. history. today, monday, november 6th, 2017. >> from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today," texas church shooting. with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. we start this show the way we've started too many shows in the past. trying to get answers to another act of unspeakable violence. at least 26 people were killed, 20 others wounded. and the youngest victim was just 5 years old. >> the gunman was identified as 26-year-old devin kelley. police said he was dressed in

black tactical gear. he opened fire outside of the birth baptist church and then went inside. >> investigators are pouring through his background. he served in the air force. he was eventually given a bad conduct discharge. >> we have complete coverage, including new information on the search for a motive. the victims and the heroes who chased after this shooter. let's start with national correspondent craig melvin, who is on the scene. good morning to you. >> reporter: that is the key question, why. this is a tiny texas town. 30 miles southeast of san antonio. roughly 500 people live here. all of them grieving this morning. we are learning more about the shooter's troubled past. we learned more about the guy who likely prevented this from being even worse. and weir learning about the victims. "the washington post" reporting that eight of the dead, all from

the same family. overnight, the quiet down of sutherland springs, texas, trying to come to grips with the latest mass shooting. more than two dozen people were killed at sunday services at this small baptist church. law enforcement officials say the shooter was 26-year-old devin patrick kelley, dressed all in black, wearing tactical gear, and armed with a lugar ar rifle. he started outside of the church and then entered the building. >> as his exited the church, a local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect. >> reporter: after being con fronted, kelley dropped his weapon and ran. one of the men who tracked down

the alleged killer is johnny langendorff. >> i did what i thought was the right thing. >> reporter: a former member of the u.s. air force, kelley received a bad conduct discharge in 2014. and in 2012, he was court-martialed for assaulting his spouse and their child. for now, his motive in sunday's mass shooting remains a mystery. outside the church, witnesses and loved ones embracing, describing the scene. one woman telling msnbc four of her grandchildren were inside. >> they were having to move the bodies to see if anybody else was alive or breathing. >> reporter: among the dead, 14-year-old annebelle pomeroy, the adoptive daughter of the church's pastor. frank pomeroy is normally behind the pulpit.

>> they tonigsaid they don't ye know. he has relatives in that community. overnight, the police and federal agents searched the home of devin kelley, about 35 miles away from the church. they are hoping that a search and interview with friends and relatives might have the answer. we don't know why stephen paddock shot all those people in las vegas. >> what else do we know about his past that may provide clues? >> it doesn't show that he had serious brushes with the police. the circumstances of how he left the military will be a big factor here. the air force says he received a bad conduct discharge. if that's the case, he would still be legally qualified to have the weapon he used in the attack. if it was for domestic violence, which apparently it was, that would have disqualified him.

how he got it will be important. investigators say he bought the gun locally. matt? savannah? >> thank you very much. we're joined by a commissioner in wilson county, texas. he's joining us on the phone. good morning. >> good morning. >> let me start by saying i'm so sorry for what's happened in your community. we know so little about why this happened and about any motive and why this target was chosen. do you or has anyone you talked to ever heard the name devin kelley before? >> no, sir. first off, i want to say that the condolence to all the families. and pray for all their family. you know, we lost a lot of people in the community. and also, thanks for support of the first responders and the law enforcement. >> i know commissioner gamez, it was taking some time to identify

the victims and monotify the famil families. has everyone opinion been not y notified now? >> i don't think. only a few have been notified, that i know of. >> was this church known outside of your small community? were there people in other parts of the state that were aware of this first baptist church? >> not that i'm aware of. this is a small town. almost in every town, we have small churches like this. i mean, really, just for the community. that's all. a small real church, probably 100 people, or 75 that fits in there. >> i'm sure you're talking to local police officials that are so consumed with this investigation. have you heard any word as to

who they think may have caused this? what the motive could be? >> no motive right now. that's the question for everybody right now. trying to figure out. why that little church. i mean, out in the myle of nowhere. why target that church? >> you talk about your small community. i assume it's safe to say that everyone in that town knows one or many or perhaps all of the people who were the victims of this shooting? >> right. everybody has a connection to that church. everybody knows. it's almost like a family town. anywhere you go, i mean, everybody recognizes everybody. >> we know that family is aching right your. commissioner gamez, we send you our love. we're so sorry for what you and your community are going through. thank you for being with us this morning. >> thank you. >> he says that little church in the middle of know where. why would it be targeted?

capping this two-day visit. the president and first lady, paying respects to the japanese emperor and empress. later, president trump feeding asian carp at a fish pond. a face-to-face meeting with vladimir putin early next week in vietnam, the president is facing a widening russia investigation back home. multiple sources familiar with the probe tell nbc news, federal investigators now have enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of mr mr. trump's former security adviser. zeroing in on the elder flynn's overseas work. >> it's a classic move for a prosecutor to ensnare somebody's child in an investigation, to use that as leverage, to try to get the principal person to cooperate in the investigation. >> reporter: the president's attorney, declining to comment.

what it's affecting is that eastbound side of the off ramp from the vine street expressway to 8th street. we're seeing a little backup on to the vine street expressway's eastbound side, traffic that's moving towards 95, we're also watching route 1's northbound side, the boulevard and 9th, an overturned truck and spill. tonight starting at 8:00, schuylkill avenue will close for at least eight months as parts of a bridge rehab project. here's a look at 30th street station. schuylkill avenue is a popular way of getting on to i-76 from there. today a jury that will decide the fate of new jersey senator bob menendez is expected to begin deliberations. he's on trial for bribery, conspiracy, and fraud. tomorrow at 5:45, our series on commuter safety continues with a look at what septa's booing do keep you safe. nobody delivers more for south jersey than steve sweeney. he stood up to north jersey special interests

the adoptive daughter of pastor frank pomeroy. >> always smiling. didn't matter who you were. someone she just met, she acted like she knew them. >> reporter: sandy ward's granddaughter was wounded. her grandson shot five times. overnight as mourners shed tier tears at a vigil, they wait to hear about the unaccounted for. >> i'm his only daughter. >> reporter: this woman said her father was at the church. she hasn't heard from him since the massacre. >> i was spoiled. he was a hard worker. a very good man. >> reporter: another woman who atended the church her whole life, said she knew the victims. her own life could have been spared because she overslept. >> why? >> reporter: that question, why,

hangs heavy here. some of the bullets struck kevin's home nearby. >> why would you do this to people like that? that are just praying. they're just worshiping. why would you attack them on something -- on a sunday, when they're defenseless? >> reporter: despite the shock, there's also defiance. >> we're friends or friends or friends and family. i mean, different towns come to this one church. even if you don't go there, you know everybody that does. the guy only brought us closer by doing this. >> reporter: it's heartbreaking. "the washington post" citing a phone conversation reports that eight members of one extended family were killed. 20 people were wounded. they were taken to local hospitals. no word on their conditions this morning. back to you. >> it's unbelievable. thank you very much. we turn to kathleen, who lives across the street from that church. good morning to you. thank you for being with us.

i am sure you know many of the people who lost their lives yesterday. so, we send our deepest condolen condolences. can you tell me what you saw? >> my apologies. there was a vehicle going by. can you repeat that? >> we are sending our condole e condolences. i wonder if you can tell us what you saw. >> my husband and i were in our bedroom. we got home about 30 minutes before the shooting started. and we were needing to do some chores outside. and we were finding a good excuse not to go do them. we were talking about our options for the day. and i heard approximately four to five -- what i thought were firecrackers. i looked at my husband. you know, firecrackers? it's sunday. thinking maybe kiddos were playing pranks. and my husband looked out the bedroom window that faces the church and said, there's a shooter at the church.

his cell phone was nearest me. i called 911. my husband was relying information to me and i'm trying to get on the other side of the house. i have been raised around guns all my life. and i was prepared to ever just hear that. i kept trying to pull my husband back. and he was trying to get me on the other side of the house. we're looking. my husband saw the shooter go up and approach the church and shoot the outside of the church, which makes like an "l." he walked back to his vehicle and he appeared to get something out. and i looked out the window. and i couldn't -- i couldn't watch it. and so, at this point, i made a call to a friend of mine who is a wilson county sheriff. and i'm telling her what's happening. and my husband would not come away from the window. and he was just focused on keeping an eye on the shooter, what was happening for law enforcement. >> kathleen, can i interrupt

you. did the husband see the shooter go into the church? and did you hear the gunshots continue after that? >> yes. the shooter walked back into the church. you know, i was calling for my husband. and i'm on the other side of the house and i hear the shots get further apart but louder. i run immediately back to the front of the house where he was at, and he informed me that a neighbor was outside, in our driveway, exchanging gunfire with the shooter at the church. i told my husband, if that's him, you need to get down. you know, there was damage to our vehicles and our house. that's by no means an issue. for it to be that close to home, immediately after that, the shooter got in his vehicle, obviously spooked by the gunfire by the neighbor, and he sped off through a busy intersection down. and the neighbor ran across the intersection to another vehicle that was -- had witnessed it.

everybody had seen him in the black vehicle. and they followed him. my husband, at that point, we thought it was okay to go outside. there were people running late to the xhurchurch. 11:17, 11:20, people were driving up. neighbors were out. they were coming outside. we were trying to keep people away from the church. we didn't want to contaminate the scene. i didn't want anybody coming up to the church seeing their loved ones like that. my husband went to the church to render aid. he's a strong man. but he came back. he just couldn't. i can't do it. >> kathleen, let me ask you. i know it's a tight knit community. did you have a lot of friends in the church on that day? >> this church, i've lived across the street approximately 12 years. i've lived in this area probably

25 years total in my life. and some of the people in the church were, you know, people that their poarents, i went to school with. their parents were friends with my parents. you may not know somebody directly but you know. annebelle pomeroy, she would come to the house. they would also invite to the fall festival. this community pulls together. it doesn't matter your race, your ethnicity. if you need something, we come together. they brought out a little girl to me, the first responders. and they asked me, can you keep her here, just for a few minutes when they tried to assess what was going on. it was horrific. >> i cannot manual all that you saw and what the community is going through. we send our love and our prayers. we appreciate you spending your time with us this morning. >> thanks, kathleen.

we welcome you back to "today" on this monday morning. we appreciate you being with us. another difficult day in this country. let's get right to your news at 8:00. president trump has ordered the u.s. flags be flown at half-staff, to honor victims of the church shooting. craig melvin is in sutherland springs. he has new information on how in unfolded and about the gunman. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a town just 30 miles southeast of san antonio. one blinking light. we are learning more about the gunman. i'll talk to the sheriff in just a few moments. meanwhile, this community just trying to make sense of what happened here yesterday. this morning, a devastating mass shooting in a texas church has shaken a tiny town to its core. the gunman opening fire at first baptist church in sutherland springs, killing more than two dozen. the victims ranging from children to senior citizens.

>> this will be a long suffering morning for those in pain. >> reporter: law enforcement officials tell nbc news, the shooter is 26-year-old devin patrick kelley. police say kelley, a former member of the air force, discharged for bad conduct in 2014, was wearing tactical gear and carrying a ruger a.r. rifle. he fired shots outside the church before entering the facility and opening fire on unsuspecting worshipers. according to officials, kelley pl fled the scene and was chased by two locals. one of them, johnny langendorff, ran him off the road and held him at gun point until police arrived. >> i did what i thought was the right thing. >> reporter: kelley was found dead by his vehicle said authorities. police say it's not clear if he took his own life. nbc news reports that kelley's motive remains unknown.

states military who was d dishonibly discharged. he had a troubled past before he enlisted in the united states military. there's information surfacing there may have been a reason why this particular location was targeted. that information may be coming out today or tomorrow in the coming days. but i don't think this was a random act of shooting. a randomly chosen location. but obviously, someone who was very deranged. >> i don't want to jump ahead of the investigation. but can you give us any further information on that? are you -- was he related to someone in there? did he hold a judge against somebody inside the church? >> you know, savannah, i really don't want to share that information because it's important for law enforcement to be able to follow up all potential leads and gather the information they want. if i were to release information, it could compromise the investigation. >> we heard there was an exchange of gunfire between the gunman and a neighbor who came out to try to do something.

whe are you aware if the gunman died of a self-inflicted news or as a matter of gun exchange with the good samaritan in the neighborhood? >> the gunfire from the citizen of sutherland springs did shoot and did connect in his shot with the assailant here. and then, obviously, the assailant dropped his gun, got into his car and drove off. he was chased by the citizens of sut sutherland springs. and during the course of that chase, the assailant swerved off. and basically died at that time. what we don't know is whether or not his death was caused by the gunshot that was inflicted by the neighbor or was it a self-inflicted gunshot? >> one of the questions is how this guy got a gun in the first place. we know he was dishonorably

discharged from the military, for domestic violence allegations. why do you think he was able to purchase a gun in the first place? >> it's interesting. we know additional information. that is before he purchased this gun, he did seek to get a right to carry permit in the state of texas and was denied that permit in the state of texas. after that, he was able to buy this gun. under federal law, someone who is dishonorably discharged, as this person was, is not authorized to buy a gun. there's ongoing information that needs to be gathered to find out exactly why and how this gun purchase was consummated. but this is all the type of thing that happens here in just the hours in the aftermath of a shooting like this. there's a lot of questions. and there's a bevy of law enforcement working to provide answers to all of the questions. >> governor, we appreciate what you are able to tell us about the investigation. we know that work will tonight.

asking questions. he's offering solutions to repair the rifts in his new book called "what unites us: reflections on patriotism." dan, i feel like calling you mr. rather. you're a native texan. i can't imagine how the news is hitting your heart this morning. hard to fathom that we're dealing with another mass shooting. >> i think for everybody, texan or otherwise, it's a hammer to the heart. an emotional earthquake, to mention metaphors. i'm frying to get my head around it. it's a difficult time. we had the tribeca killings a few days ago. it's easy to get pessimistic about the country, who we are, what we are. and the book, "what unites us," i don't have all the answers. i'm a reporter that got lucky. i don't have all the answers. the hope is, it's an intimate book. i think some people will be surprised about it.

it's saying let's have a conversation about what patriotism is in the second decade of the 21st century. our whole country, multiethnic, multireligious, multiracial, is built on a premise of out of many, one. we have to find those things. we have to nurture those things that keep us together. and so, i hope you will find the book is a hopeful book. i think it is. >> i was going to say, it's just in time. i think many people feel despair about a variety of things that are going on in our country and the world. you're talking about patriotism. and you're saying in one of your solutions, kind of to harkin back to the ideals, the fundamentals. >> exactly. we need to build bridges between one another. different points. we're going to disagree about things. d dissent, for example. as american as the american revelation. we're a country that guarantees

dissent, as long as it's peaceful dissent. empathy is very much on the mind today. we're an empathetic people. look at what happened in the wake of hurricane harvey. neighbor helping neighbor, people helping people. the book is to remind us, there's some things, many things, on which the overwhe overwhelming majority of the country agree. we agree on having institutions that sustain us. a system of checks and balances. and values that transform us. and then, there's the drive that keeps alive entrepreneurship and creativity, that has made the country great. we all recognize, we're not a perfect country. but we can be better. and we're better than this. and we know it. >> our institutions aren't perfect, of course. no one will be surprised that you have an impassioned defense of a free press. in the book, there's a recent pole. nearly half of the people think the media make up stories. the media myself is under fire. and what do you think the media

needs to do better to enhance its credibility? and what do people need to understand about the value of the press? >> those of us in the media, i prefer the world press. we have freedom of the press. our job is to bear witness, to honest brokers of information. to be as accurate and fair as we can. we need to do a better job. i think most of the public understands, we're under attack by people including the president, for their partisan, political and ideological reasons. they want people -- they are saying, believe us. believe only your president and believe only the people who are in power. don't believe these people out in the press. this is a fundamental american trait and value. to understand the press is not perfect, we're going to make our mistakes. but we're a check on power. and i think the people stop and think about it, remind themselves about that. they're saying, with all of the

flaws and heaven knows i made my mistakes, have my open wounds from some self-inflicted wounds. i think people understand about such things as the right to vote. there's some controversy about should people have a driver's license and that sort of thing. we believe in a fundamental right to vote. if we can keep emphasizing those things about which we agree, keep a civil conversation, i think we're going to be all right. i'm an optimist by experience and nature. it may be a long valley. we'll get through it. >> i'm an optimist, too. the book is right on that tone. thank you, dan rather, for being with us. the book is called "what unites us." you can find more about it at today.com/shop. coming up next, clourageous and inspirational women tackling breast cceran

we're back, now, at 8:40, with "pink power today." and i sat down with women, who are in the midst of breast cancer, having chemo, surgery, and losing their hair. you would think that that story would be very depressing. and they have an inner light that shines through. it's the day you walk in the door and the doctor tells you, that your life has forever changed. >> i found the lump myself, after a routine mammogram, so i was healthy. >> i thought that it was a cyst. i couldn't have breast cancer. >> i walked into that appointment all by myself because nothing was supposed to be wrong. >> he said, you see all this white stuff? that's cancer. and he said, it already spread to your liver and ribs. >> two days before his 1st birthday, i had a double

mastectomy. right now, i'm 2 1/2 weeks out from that. and i'll have radiation in a couple weeks. ♪ >> reporter: when talking to your children, i'm curious, how do you? or how did you? >> so, my 8-year-old knew something was up. and i said, what's the matter? she said, i'm scared that you have cancer. i said, what does that mean? she said, it means you're going to get sick and you're going to die. and i said, is mommy a fighter? and she said, yes. and i said, does mommy like to lose? no. is mommy a positive person? yes. those are all the things that we're going to use to fight this. >> when i was diagnosed, my daughter was 20. and she said, i'm going to have a nervous breakdown.

i said, no, you're not. you better get it together because mommy got it together. ♪ >> i got to tell you. the positivity in here is something that is palpable. how is it that you lead with that positivity? >> there's always something to smile about every day. even on the hard days, there's something to smile about. the other day i put jeans on by myself after -- and i was doing a little dance. i got my jeans on. >> reporter: by the way, that's huge. >> that's huge, right? >> that's huge. >> reporter: when you look in the mirror at yourself, there you are. what do you see? >> i see what shines from the inside. i miss my hair. i miss my chest. but i'm still here. and i don't look at what i don't have. i look at what i have. >> reporter: sheila, you chose to remain bald. >> i wanted to empower other women. i think it's bold. i think it's beautiful. i think it's classy.

i think it's sexy. i met my husband. that was his pickup line. i'll bet your boyfriend likes your bald head. i'm like, i'm single. he's my husband. >> sometimes i say, do people think that i'm sick? or do they think i'm a [ bleep ]? >> reporter: tell me what defines beauty to you now? what is beautiful? >> looking at my girls and wanting to set an example with them. >> getting up in the morning and wanting to have my day and put one foot in front of the other. >> i missed eight days of work. that was the eight chemo treatments i had. wow. looking back, i did this. that's my beauty, the strength i found within myself. >> one of my bosses said to me, i was having a breakdown. i said, i have breast cancer. he said, i know a lot of women with breast cancer and they have one thing in common.

and i said, what's that? he said, they're still here. oh. >> i want women to know that you're stronger than you think you are. >> i'm a fighter. and everyone can be. >> pay attention. and just because you are in your 20s or your 30s, you think breast cancer happens to older women, it doesn't have to. it's not an excuse to die or give up. you have sheila who gets treatment every month. kiara had treatment wednesday. brittany is 2 1/2 weeks from surgery. had treatment yesterday. and here we are. life doesn't stop. live your life. i want to live. >> that's beautiful. >> wow. >> oh, my gosh, the design. >> oh, wow. >> wow, cool. >> today, you know, i met four

beautiful women that are going through the same thing i'm going through. they get me. we're sisters. >> in case you're wondering, those ladies were getting henna tattoos. it's an ancient form of body art that will last several weeks. they ended up being not just so full of life, but will be life long friends that grew. >> you said once, something to us, a couple years ago. you don't know how strong you are until you're tested. >> that's your only option. and those women are bright lights. i met people who are totally healthy who don't have half of that light. >> just the courage. she said, they're in it right now. it isn't a bygone memory. they're in the middle of it and showing courage and light. >> they were something. >> nice one, hoda, as always. we want to speak of health and go to our no-shave campaign this month.
