right now at 11:00, heartbreak deep in the heart of texas. investigators are still trying to figure out what led a gunman to open fire inside a church and kill 26 people. good morning. i'm erin coleman. this morning, the texas governor is zpsuggesting there may be a connection between the gunman and the baptist church where the massacre happened. we do know devin kelley's ex-wife and her parents attended the church occasionally. they were not at the service when kelley opened fire. we also know that kelley was a former member of the u.s. air force, who was court-martialed for assaulting his wife and child. kelley was shot and wounded by a neighbor, but it is not clear yet if that is the shot that killed him or if he killed himself. nbc 10 national correspondent, sarah dallof is live in

sutherland springs with the very latest on the investigation and what's going on there right now. sarah? >> reporter: well, good morning. this is a community in shock and grief. 26 people dead in a town of just several hundred, it seems everyone knew someone inside the church. in what was supposed to be a sanctuary, shots fired. >> in front of the church. in front of the church. >> reporter: during sunday services at first baptist church in sutherland springs, texas. 26 people were killed, between 12 to 14 were children. >> my husband actually went to the church to render aid and he's a strong man, but he turned around and came back. he just -- he -- he said, i can't do it. >> reporter: law enforcement tells us that devin kelley wearing black and tactical gear opened fire outside the church before continuing inside, shooting at parishioners.

>> he exited the church, a local resident, grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect. >> reporter: kelley ran and was later found dead inside his car, although it's not clear yet if he took his own life or if he was taken down by one of the men who tracked him. >> he lost control on his own and hit the bar ditch. >> reporter: kelley, a former member of the air force, was given a bad conduct discharge in 2014. he was court-martialed in 2012 for assaulting his wife and child. authorities say his in-laws have attended the church. >> they were not here yesterday to attend church, but they did come yesterday afternoon and speak to the investigators. >> reporter: overnight a vigil for those lost. including the pastor's 14-year-old daughter, annabelle pomer pomeroy. the victims range in age from just 5 years old to 72. lives cut short in a place they felt safe. a small town church on a sunday morning.

election is not as popular, because there's no presidential candidate on the ballot. krazner and grossman are running to replace former d.a., seth williams, who resigned this past summer after pleading guilty to corruption. a judge sentenced williams to five years in prison late last month. another high-profile race in the tri-state area is the race for new jersey governor. democrat bill murphy and republican kim guadagno spent the weekend making their final pitches for voters. as of today, we know guadagno will be at get out the vote events and murphy will hold events in edison and trenton. nbc 10 is counting down to election night. we'll have instant results and updates on air and on the nbc 10 app, on all the races happening in our area. we are tracking showers throughout our area this morning. and some places could see thunderstorms later today, as we take a live look at radar.

it is certainly not feeling like winter today, but nbc 10 is getting you ready for what is to come with severe winter weather week. the first alert weather team is visiting area shopping malls all week long. first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is kicking things off this morning at the oxford valley mall. >> reporter: hey, erin, yeah, this is going to be the warmest day of the week, so might be the best time to come out and say hello. we've got the weather team here and we're going to be here until 5:00. today we're at oxford valley mall. it's open and the weather is okay. kind of comfortable. cloudy, and we've brought along some of our tools that we use with the weather, first alert weather team. this is storm force 10. and over there, we've got storm ranger 10 and krystal klei is there, monitoring that. bill henley is in the crowd and

he'll be joining us in just a few minutes. now, let's take a look at the weather right now. it's pretty cloudy. krystal says hi. and it's cloudy across the entire area. there's easton. we went to the shore and it's pretty much the same picture. the radar shows just a few little sprinkles up toward upper montgomery county and upper bucs. a little bit more north of harrisburg. and as we zoom back out, it's not all well organized, it's not especially heavy right now. there could be some thunderstorms developing later in the day. here's our futurecast. and we go through the afternoon. some showers around, so you need the umbrellas. and it could even be a thunderstorm in a couple of spots. so this is not going to be a washout, by any means. then we start clearing out tonight, but that isn't necessarily the end of our moisture threat for this week.

right now, look at these mild temperatures. up close to 70 degrees in rehoboth beach. 68. it's 65 in philadelphia. 67 in northeast philly. with the lack of sunshine, it's not necessarily going to warm up a lot. but 60s is still above average for this time of the year. and you can see the threat of showers and storms during the afternoon in parts of the area. we're going to be seeing also threats as we go into the next couple of days. we'll get into that with the rest of the ten-day forecast, coming up. >> all right, glenn, we'll see you then. and you can meet glenn "hurricane" schwartz, bill henley, and krystal klei today at the oxford valley mall for severe winter weather week. t nbc 10 meteorologists will be throu there through 5:00 this afternoon. the eagles soared to victory against denver to maintain the best record in all of football. no doubt, head coach doug

and if we keep seeing more of this from our birds, we'll see you there. >> reporter: and as you said, erin, the eagles take on the cowboys next sunday night in texas. reporting live at the linc, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >> cost you a lot of money. all right, a first alert traffic update on an accident that caused headaches for center city commuters this morning. a dump truck, you can see there, overturned, blocking the ramp off of i-76 at eighth street. sky force 10 over the scene earlier this morning. the truck spilled its load all over the road. the ramp is still closed. no word on how the accident happened or if anyone was hurt. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter, jessica boyington, has more on the traffic impact from that accident. jess? >> yeah, so erin, we were watching this until about 6:00 or so this morning, where this happened. and they were still letting cars off of the off-ramp. right now it's completely closed, as you look up ahead, on the eastbound side of the vine street expressway, you can still

see a vehicle blocking off that ramp. not to get to the bottom, because there's a spill down there and still something to be diverted around. they decided to make this a little bit easier for everyone and block it off completely. earlier, we were seeing some pretty big delays backing up on the eastbound of the vine. right now, not so much. eastbound traffic is moving around just fine. and fur headed eastbound through center city on the vine, that means you're headed towards 95. so just pack a little bit of patience, maybe a little bit later on in our commute or maybe on the way home if it stays that way. keeping our eyes on that and also still a lane lost on the boulevard northbound around ninth street. an earlier crash there, too. some cleanup there where we're losing a lane. and in upper providence, township line road and hefner road, there's a crash. back to you, erin. more charges could be coming in the investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. ahead, the trouble another former member of president trump's inner circle could face. and it's severe winter

against former national security adviser, michael flynn. flynn's son could also face charges. it's part of the larger probe into russia's interference in the 2016 election. special counsel robert mueller is reportedly applying pressure on general flynn after the indictment of former trump campaign manager, paul manafort. president trump fired flynn after just 24 days. he was one of the first to come under scrutiny in the investigation of possible collusion between russia and the trump campaign. meanwhile, paul manafort will not have any changes to his bail conditions. he appeared in court this morning along with one of his former aides, rick gates. they are both on house arrest. the judge considers both men to be flight risks because of their wealth and their connections, but will consider proposals to grant their more freedom of movement in the next few days. we are about to get a live update on the texas church massacre. you can see folks gathered there in texas. the sheriff, the fbi, the atf

will be speaking. we'll bring their comments to you live when they happen, right here on nbc 10. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, this is severe winter weather week and when that happens, and it's in november, that's also the week that we deal with a winter weather forecast. and in honor of that, we have a different weather bow tie every day. little hints about what to expect for the winter. this is one of my snowflake bow ties. and it's not feeling like winter out here. it's actually kind of mild, even though we have all of those clouds. and we're seeing, actually, a little bit of sunshine up there, so the clouds are not all that thick. and even in some places where we're seeing stuff on radar, it's not reaching the ground. let's show you what conditions

we have across the area right now. it is in the 60s, virtually, everywhere. it is cloudy virtually everywhere. and we're not going to be seeing much in the way of sunshine during the day today. that's for sure. and speaking of the shore, look at that. ocean, 62 degrees. that's way above average for this time of the year. and that's helping those shore points be kind of mild. 65 at cape may point. 66 in stone harbor. 65 in avalon and ventner, 64 in wholegate. so temperatures are higher than they were at this time yesterday. 5 to 10 degrees higher, despite all the clouds. now, the clouds may prevent us from getting too warm today. if we had sunshine today, we would easily get into the mid-70s. there's the radar showing a few showers back to the west. nothing too extreme and then we have that break by ohio, towards the left of your screen. but as we go farther to the west, we see some showers in the

middle of the picture, even some snow north of st. louis. that's another disturbance that could have an impact on our weather, as we head toward the middle of the week. by this afternoon, there's some showers across the area, scattered around, there is a chance of a thunderstorm mostly in delaware, extreme south jersey. we dry out later today and into tonight, but that is not the end of the moisture. we have another disturbance coming up for tuesday. some of the commuter modputer m bring this rain all the way through into the philadelphia area, but it's obviously most likely in delaware and south jersey. this is one of those southern systems, and we have another one coming in on wednesday. and maybe a third on thursday. so, we've got a pretty cloudy week. it's going to get much colder than it has been. look at tomorrow's highs. chestnut hill, fairmont, only 52.

50 in ellen and shanksville. but you don't see the raindrops. you see the raindrops in vorhees, wildwood, newark, all through delaware. it's going to be much wetter to the south. that's why we do neighborhood weather. because there are differences across the area. there's the philadelphia forecast. a drop in temperatures from the high today, tomorrow. highs of only 52. so that's kind of the coldest day that we have seen so far. and there's that rain threat as we go into tomorrow and even on wednesday in some parts of the area, delaware could end up pretty wet over the next few days, same thing with parts of the jersey shore. once again, we're here with the nbc 10 weather team. we are here all day until 5:00. oxford valley today, franklin mills tomorrow, and we'll be back with more on the weather, coming up.

news special report. here is kate snow. >> good morning, everyone. we're coming on the air to bring the latest in the church shooting in sutherland springs. the worst in history.

26 people dead and now authorities saying 30 injured. let's join freeman martin with the texas department of public safety. >> we know during that pursuit the suspect used his cell phone to notify his father that he had been showed and didn't think he was going to make it. subsequently he shot himself. so as i said, the pathologist will determine the cause and manner of his death. we can confirm the suspect did not have a license to carry. the suspect did have a noncommissioned unarmed private security license similar to a security guard at a concert type situation. there were no disqualifiers entered into the national crime information center database that the preclude him from receiving a private security license. private security background checks including fingerprints

and criminal history checks with texas crime information center and national crime information center databases were checked and he was clear. i can tell you there is video recording from inside the church that has been secured. we have viewed the video. the crime scene investigation will do on for days. all the bodies have been removed from the church. our victims will be autopsied at the medical examiner's office. as i said, our suspect was autopsied this morning in travis county. that information will be forthcoming. we know you have a lot of questions. we'll answer what we can. to start off with i think we're going to special agent in charge of atf to answer questions he can answer. his assistance to this

>> what i can confirm, there were three firearms that have been recovered. one was the ruger 566 rifle that was recovered at the scene of the church. two additional handguns were recovered from the vehicle of the deceased suspect, one was a glock 9 millimeter and one was a ruger 22. i also can confirm all three of these firearms were purchased by the deceased suspect. there's been a lot of information in the media and question about the discharge of this individual from the military. what i will tell you right now is that in general, if an

individual had a dishonorable discharge from the military, they would be prohibited from p possessing or purchasing firearms. in this specific investigation, we are early in the investigation. we do not have all the documentation yet. so until we can get all the documentation, determine exactly what his discharge was and exactly what his conviction in the military, we will not have a determination on if this individual was prohibited from possessing or purchasing firearms. thank you. >> next, we'll have the wilson county sheriff, joe tackitt. >> i think i spoke to most of you this morning. some things have changed since early morning when i spoke to y'all. and we will be getting back with y'all later and if you need to try to contact me, i think most ofs you did get my telephone number. right now, our hearts are going out to all of the family members that have lost family or have

family in the hospital. thank you all. >> next, we have the fbi special agent in charge, chris combs. >> good morning, i'm chris combs, the fbi special agent in charge. first of all, our condolences to this community on this horrific act. we're here with our partners, the dps and the rangers who we work with every day in support of them, assisting them in any way that we can. right now we're providing some of the evidence teams in support and also some technical support, with phones, video that we talked about, going back to our lab at quantico. so we are here in support of texas dps and we will be here with them as long as we need. thank you. >> and one thing everybody wants to know is why did this happen. it's a senseless crime, but we can tell you that there was a domestic situation going on within this family. the suspect's mother-in-law

attended this church. we know he had made threatening -- she had received threatening texts from him. and we can't go into details about that domestic situation that is continuing to be vetted and thoroughly investigated, but we want to get that out there, that this was not racially motivated. it wasn't over religious beliefs. there was a domestic situation going on within the family and the in-laws. and next, the wilson county district attorney, aubrey lewis, if you would like to say something. >> thank you. good morning, we've learned this morning, just how small town america truly is. we've had a tremendous outpouring across the country from people wanting to assist our families in need. and i want to make sure that everyone knows how they can help. because everyone can help. you can help by praying for these families and their loved ones, first and foremost, and everyone can do that.

the other thing is, you can help these families financially. and so, we are working and in the process of setting up two bank accounts. the sutherland springs community association has a bank account through commerce bank in stockdale that will be accepting monetary donations on behalf of the families. in addition to that, wells fargo will have an account as well set up for the victims of sutherland springs. and so that will be available for anyone to help. what we do not need at this point are canned goods and nonperishable items for the families. if you want a way to help, it's through prayer and it's through financial donations. and so we appreciate you guys sharing that information and we are very grateful for this country and the just tremendous outpouring of support that these families are starting to receive. and we want to make sure that everybody knows how they can help. so thank you all very much. >> also with us today, we have

two texas ranger majors, cory lane and brian brzezinskbrzezin are the incident commanders for the investigations. so we will try to answer any of your questions you have at this time. [ inaudible question ] >> of course, the video will assist in the investigation and, you know, it was a horrific event and at this time, we're not prepared to talk about the video. >> [ inaudible ] can you explain what happened after the shooting happened? can you back up a little bit and give us a description [ inaudible ]? >> we know he was seen at the vale valero. he was obviously suspicious to others, waibased on the way he dressed in all black. at that time, i'm not sure if he had the mask on or not. but he was wearing a black mask that had a white face, skull,

face to it. then he drove across to the church, and that's when he exited the vehicle and started the shooting. he was wearing a ballistic vest with a plate on the front. there was no plate on the back, but he was wearing a ballistic vest, yes. [ inaudible question ] >> at this time, i cannot. we know that he expressed anger towards his mother. who attends this church. >> do we know if she reported it to authorities before? >> we don't. >> do we know if it has anything to do with his estranged wife? [ inaudible ] >> we can't answer that. >> one more question. [ inaudible question ] >> we can only speculate, but,

you know -- >> [ inaudible ] domestic terror? >> that would probably be a better question for -- >> when did he buy [ inaudible ] -- >> let him answer the question. [ inaudible question ] >> at this time, we do not have a terrorism investigation open. the rangers are the lead. they have the investigation and we're supporting them. >> chris combs with the fbi. [ inaudible question ] >> so, what we know is that he bought four weapons in total, two of them were bought in colorado. two of them were bought here in texas. there was -- there was one purchase per year in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017. [ inaudible question ]

>> i didn't hear. [ inaudible question ] >> all right. we've been listening to authorities in texas talking about this mass shooting at al church yesterday morning -- >> without getting into much detail, the subject -- >> just pausing for a moment to see what they're saying there. that was the press conference going on in texas about the mass shooting at a church yesterday morning. nbc's justice department correspondent, pete williams, is in our washington bureau. ho he's been listening along with me. it sounds like the headline to me is that this was a domestic dispute. >> no question about it. that's the way it's been looking since last night. the fbi on the record saying, no sign of terrorism. and one question here, was he legally entitled to buy hthese weapons? we know he bought the assault rifle used in the attack last year at a san antonio gun

dealer. but was there something in his military record? the assault conviction and the fact that he got a general court-martial, which is the military equivalent of a felony, was that reported into the system that would have been used when the background check was done when he bought the gun? and if so, would those be disqualifying? the air force is trying to answer that question, the fbi is trying to answer that question, and so is atf. that's one big question here. should he have been able to buy this gun or would his military record have disqualified him, kate. >> and we're getting an update, also, pete, on the victims of all of this. we've said, 26 deceased. i misspoke earlier, it is 20 people injured. among those injured, 18-month-old is the range up to 77 years old. pete, on the weapons, they just mentioned at the end of the press conference that four weapons were purchased, two in texas, two in colorado. >> right. and we believe that the assault rifle was the one that was bought in texas, in the san antonio area. as a matter of fact, the gun dealer has said as much. >> and let me go to craig melvin

who's on the scene with us, in texas. craig, the magnitude of this is so hard to process, especially when i give the range of ages starting with a baby, 18 months old. what is the community doing to try to cope? >> reporter: well, here's what also compounds that grief, kate. this is a very tiny texas town. we're talking roughly 500 people, literally everyone in this town knew someone inside that church. also among the dead, the sheriff telling me a short time ago, of the 26 deceased, up to 14 of them are children. eight of them are from the same family. so this is a tragedy of epic proportions in a town that's, again, very small, 30 miles southeast of san antonio. >> and one thing we haven't touched on, craig, is the heros in that town, who pursued the gunman. tell us that part of the story. >> reporter: i spoke to one of

the gentlemen. his name is johnnie langendorff. he saw the guy who just shot up the church. another guy who had a rifle with him hopped in his car, said, follow that guy, he just shot up the church and they gave chase. and as you just heard in that news conference, law enforcement officials here crediting those two gentlemen with likely subduing the suspect. >> craig melvin on the ground there. thank you, craig. we will, of course, continue to follow this story all throughout the day. we'll break in when necessary. lester holt is in sutherland springs tonight for "nbc nightly news." for now, i'm kate snowe, nbc news in new york. >> that community in mourning. a nation in mourning after yet another mass shooting in the u.s. that community is grieving, as you just heard, and really searching for answers after more than two dozen people were shot and killed inside a texas church. we just got an update from

this morning, we're learning more about the man responsible for the texas church massacre and his victims. police now say 12 to 14 children were found dead inside the first baptist church in sutherland springs, texas. the youngest, just 18 months old. they are among it will 26 people killed. investigators say devin kelley fired hundreds of rounds yesterday morning. the motive is still not clear. but police say this was a domestic situation, not terrorism related. police say kelley's in-laws received threatening texts from the gunman. >> they were not here yesterday to attend church, but they came yesterday afternoon to speak to the investigators.

>> reporter: in the aftermath of the shooting? >> in the aftermath. >> reporter: have we been able to glean anything from conversations with them about what might have motivated this? >> not at this time. >> police praise two good samaritans for jumping. >> we know a neighbor across the street from the church heard what was going on, armed himself with an ar assault rifle and engaged the suspect. they engaged in gunfire here at the church. we know that the suspect was shot, when he dropped his assault rifle, jumped in his ford expedition and fled the scene, this good samaritan, our texas hero, flagged down another young man from texas, jumped in his vehicle and they pursued the suspect. we know during that pursuit, the suspect used his cell phone to notify his father that he had been shot and didn't think he was going to make it. >> police said this investigation will go on for

"tonight show" host jimmy fallon canceled all tapings of his show this week following the death of his mother, the woman he called his biggest fan. gloria fallon died saturday at a new york city hospital with her son and other family members by her side. she was in the audience for her son's very first "tonight show" episode back in 2014. jimmy has also featured her in the show's hashtag segment. gloria fallon was 68 years old. repeat episodes of the tonight show will air all this week. now to breaking news. philadelphia police just gave us an update on the death of a young art student who was found dead in cobbs creek. kara johnson's body was found in the water near cobbs creek parkway and spruce street. she was strangled to death.

buddy director last year. and basically, we're pairing students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and students from the regular department. it's all about one to one friendships and inclusion. >> how does the chef event work then? >> so we have paired 11 chefs from all over the greater philadelphia area with our buddies and they're going to be working together to create a dish for our guests tomorrow. we're really excited. there are some really good food going on. and the chefs have been really generous with their time and resources to provide a great meal for the event. >> so collin, you're going to be working with chef drew ditomo. >> yes, i am. >> tell us what it's like hanging out with drew and what dish you're going to be working on. >> chef drew is an awesome, awesome chef. he's a really cool guy. he's very -- like, he has a lot of energy, i'm super psyched. i'm not sure what dish we're cooking yet, but it will

that's one advantage of a weather man being outside. it's cloudy, but the clouds are not all that is thick. let's see, around the rest of the area, yeah, that storm force 10 showing the wind speed. that's the anemometer on top of the truck. temperatures in the mid-60s, as you can see, across the area and in delaware, it's close to 70. glasgow, odessa, middletown, 68 degrees, despite all the clouds that are around, it's 70 in long neck. 69 in dewey beach. 68 in rehoboth and in lewis, delaware, with the southwest wind. we've got a lot of clouds around. peeks of sunshine. the showers generally north and west of reading and not especially heavy. the cloud cover would probably help prevent storms from becoming real strong, but if there are going to be strong storms this afternoon, it would most likely be in delaware or south jersey.

we showed you one model earlier. this is another one, this is called the nan model. and we see the southwest winds with the mild weather now. as we go to tonight, it's the north winds come in. so the cold air is coming in tonight, get those coats ready, because tomorrow and the rest of the week, you're going to need them. and there's the north wind to start off tomorrow, an area of rain comes in from the west, a northeast wind. that's pretty nasty. this model is pretty wet for tomorrow and then it goes offshore. the wind continues out of the northeast. so it can't warm up, as long as you have the clouds in that northeast wind. so this model does keep it pretty nasty tomorrow, keeps it cold for the rest of the week. temperatures not getting out of the mid-50s. tomorrow, not getting out of the mid-50s, clouds all over the place, but you done notice a lot of raindrops. the best chance of rain is from philadelphia southward,
