time of the shooting on sunday. investigators believe kelley killed himself but are awaiting final confirmation. ten victims are still in the hospital. >> erin coleman has the latest developments. erin, bring us up to date. >> the church's pastor and his wife broke down in tears. they lost a teenaged daughter. they said the church was much more than a place to worship. >> now much of our church family is gone. >> reporter: the pastor and his wife lost everything, including their daughter. the shooting happened in sutherland springs, a small town in texas. it's so small that everyone there knows someone who was at the church at the time. >> i was not ever prepared to just hear that. >> reporter: investigators say it could have been worse if not for a good samaritan who grabbed his rifle and took matters into his own hands. a shootout left the gunman wounded and on the run. >> this good samaritan, our

texas hero, flagged down another man and jumped in his vehicle and they pursued the suspect. >> the gentleman with the rifle got in the truck with me and told me the other man shot at the church and we had to go get him. >> reporter: johnny langendorff didn't think twice about putting himself in danger. >> it crossed my mind after the affect. >> what possessed you to do it? >> it was the right thing to do. >> reporter: investigators say the attack was not racially motive and religion did not play a part in the massacre. it doesn't make in any easier as this town begins to heal. >> this community will pull together. it doesn't matter what you do for a living, your race or ethnicity, we come together and that's always how it's been. >> the shooter called his father just before he died and said he didn't think he was going to make it. we look the at domestic violence complaints against kelley. we're live at the breaking news

center. erin coleman, nbc 10 news. and the shooting in texas is prompting questions about church security. lauren mayk is talking to leaders about what is being done to keep the houses of worship safe. that story is at 4:30. new details about a woman's body that was found in corps creek. the victim was an art student in philadelphia. now police are trying to find out who strangled her. >> nbc 10's drake clark has been interviewing people. what are they telling you? >> reporter: by all accounts, this 21-year-old was living her life well. she had no criminal background, she had no known enemies. but when she left home last week, she was murdered and her body was dumped here inside the park. 21-year-old kiara johnson was found face-down in this creek

last friday morning. she had been strangled. >> at this point, it doesn't appear that the body was there very long. >> reporter: johnson's mother reported her missing on thursday. less than 24 hours later, johnson's remains were found, dashing her family's hope for a safe return and happy ending. it's the end of a young life full of promise. johnson studied visual communications at the school of art in center city where she was a second-year student. >> it is a small community and students are very upset this morning. >> reporter: dean of academic affairs sill yeah mccray says johnson was always available and helpful to other students. she believed in land conservation and she always smiled. >> she was funny. she had her own sense of style.

>> reporter: now she's become the subject of a murder mystery and police are looking for her killer. >> right now we're working on tracking down her movements and isolating who she was last with. >> reporter: and police tell me they are checking cameras in areas where she may have been before she died and they are using all available resources to develop leads and ultimately they are hoping it will lead them to a suspect. we're live in center city, drake clark, nbc 10 news. turning now to our first alert weather, grab your umbrella. scattered showers are moving across our area by this evening. the windshield wipers are working hard already in the lehigh valley. the rain was really coming down on main street. let's take a live look right now in the lehigh valley. spnray skies are covering allentown right now. hardly anyone on the beaches at all in cape may on this overcast day.

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us live. >> glenn, where are those showers right now? not where you are right now, actually? >> the weather is actually improved here over the last few hours. we're at oxford valley mall up in lower bucks county and this is not where the showers are. we've got nice, blue skies out here. the clouds are broken up, for the most part. we have storm force 10 out here. take a look at the other pictures around the area and in wilmington, delaware, it's still looking pretty good as well but clouds are not all that thick at the moment. and the radar is showing just a few little showers on the one that moved through upper bucks county and lehigh valley had some and the weather has improved and in central pennsylvania, the skies are even clearer. there's a front that has come through and temperatures will go

down. we do not expect much in the way of rain. it as we head through the evening, we're going to see those temperatures go down. by tomorrow morning, 41 in philadelphia. and 30s in the suburbs and lehigh valley, that is just the beginning. we have some cold weather coming in this week and some more rain. i'll have the timing on all of that coming up soon. to this now, three people are hurt after this crash on roosevelt boulevard. sky force 10 is over the scene on pratt street. one of those cars crashed head-on into a pole. police tell us no one was seriously hurt. a police involved crash sent shattered glass and debris all over on this street in northeast philly. that's t-- no one here was

injured. to decision 2017 now and candidates across the tri-state making their final push for votes ahead of tomorrow's election day. new jersey voters will be deciding who is the state's next governor. republican candidate kim guadagno will make a dozen stops as part of her main street tour of new jersey. an equally busy day for democrat phil murphy. murphy has stops in edison and trenton. nbc 10 is counting down to election night. instant results and updates on air and on our app on all of the racing happening in our area. president trump and japanese prime minister abe promised to put more pressure on north korea. they say it's time to stop north korea from continuing its nuclear and missile development.

remembered today at his childhood church. ♪ bag pipes played as hundreds of people filed into the church to say their final good-byes to darren bre darren drake, a 32-year-old who was out for a bike ride when he was hit by a suspected terrorist driving a truck. drake had cheated that twice before. he was staying at the mandalay bay until vegas a few weeks ago. this was the deadliest terror attack in new york since the september 11th attacks. here at home, drivers who use the schuylkill avenue bridge get ready for changes. zm it will be closed between market and pennd.o.t. streets.

that project is scheduled to take around 15 months to complete. drivers can access the eastbound 76th on ramp at 23rd and walnut during all of that construction. city leaders in philadelphia are trying to come up with a solution to the city's squatter problem. officials met to try to deal with this issue today. part of the problem is the state's squat tter rights laws. there is a question about what is causing a rise in pan kree at tech cancer rates in parts of bucks and montgomery county. >> these counties were plagued by contaminated water near military bases. there's little to link the disease between that and chemical exposure. they are working to discover if there's a connection. don't be surprised if you're in allentown and a police

officer strikes up a conversation with you part of a new initiative called community engagement, 365. officers will be using t-shirts and footballs and basketballs as conversation starters. this is to build a strong relationship with the community. the end of an era down in delaware, the original dogfish head brewery was demolished. the original brewery sits right next to the new, much bigger dogfish brew pub. dogfish head started out as a tiny microbrewery back in 1996 and now the beer is sold all over the u.s. officers in delaware helping to support grow small businesses across the state. officials announced the grow delaware fund in wilmington

threatening. jersey shore, the temperatures are still a warm 62. and we have a bit of a land breeze. it's all well into the 60s. now, there's a cold front coming down. look at the temperatures on the other side. pittsburgh, 49. rochester, 46. only 42 in chicago. 33 in minneapolis. some of that cold air is heading down this way but the front will stall not too far from us and it will create complications. you can see the showers. so there is a chance, especially in central and southern delaware tonight and then we got a bit of a break that will affect us tomorrow. watch the temperatures go down hour by hour as we go through

the night and the skies clear tomorrow morning, you're definitely going to need pretty good coats out there because it's going to be chilly and it's not going to warm up a lot tomorrow because the clouds are going to come back and then here comes the rain in the afternoon. now, it's especially heavier in delaware, south jersey tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night and into wednesday. no doubt about that. but everybody is much, much colder. and especially delaware and south jersey, we stay chilly all week long. 48 in elwnn. easton, 59.

injured. of those, ten are in critical condition. terri smith witnessed the massacre across the street from her store. >> we heard shots for a couple of seconds and then a massive load of shots and i believe that's when he was in the church. and we couldn't do anything because we didn't know if there was more of them. and all of a sudden, we see one of the victims running out and he came across the street towards the store and he was bloody on his arms and part of his face and we let him in the store and we had him on the ground and then we see -- he's telling us that his family's in there and that somebody had gone in and they had shot up everybody. >> and that shooting is prompting questions about security at houses of worship.

nbc 10's lauren mayk has been talking to religious leaders. >> what are they telling you? >> reporter: even though they have security plans, this has given them something to think about. for example, one pointed out that the shooter in this case started firing from outside the church. while a lot of those security plans might just deal with inside. another reason to go over those security plans and be vigilant as well as prayerful. one dares to imagine when church started, security wasn't something organizers were thinking about. >> we were just excited about worship. >> reporter: and then the shooting in charleston happened and things changed. >> it's a different world in which we live now and security is paramount because you can't have peace unless you have security. >> reporter: kevin johnson is the lead pastor here where new members are welcome but everything is watched for your safety. >> we can't go into too much detail, but rest assure, we have big brother and he can see everything that's taking place on this campus. >> reporter: now after the

shooting in a texas church, a conversation across faiths about how to keep worshippers safe. do you expect to see more security as a result of this? >> i do. i think it's sad that people will expect more security. i think that people will begin looking at strangers walking into buildings and that will probably be the first step. >> reporter: the rabbi teaches at this college and says he's seen more layers of security in other countries. >> in europe, most places that i've been through, you have to go through metal detectors. >> reporter: it's a difficult balance, though, for places of worship that want to be welcoming and secure. >> i pray that that would take away from the worship experience and getting in touch with god. >> reporter: is this something you've thought about? >> not yet. >> reporter: i reached out to the philadelphia archdiocese to see what this means for their

churches and a spokesman just got back and tells me there's no threat at this time but they work with authorities to ensure a safe environment and encourage anyone who sees something unsafe to report it. live in center city, lauren mayy, nbc 10 news. >> we have continuing coverage of the church shooting on the nbc 10 app. you can hear more from witnesses and get the latest on the investigation any time by signing up for breaking news alerts. to northwestern pennsylvania now where a band of deadly storms is responsible for killing two people after floodwaters collapsed part of the house that they were in. floodwaters rose in the front yard of the home and caused the foundation to just collapse. the fire department's scuba team recovered two bodies inside. their names haven't been released. neighbors at the scene say flooding has been a long-time problem in that neighborhood. scattered showers and a

blast of cold air. that's what we're in store for across our entire region. here's a look right now at conditions in center city at a busy intersection of eighth and market streets. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us live. >> a little cloudy behind us but not so much where you are, glenn? >> reporter: yeah, it's a beautiful end to the day where we are. we have variable conditions across the area. in some places, we're setting up for a spectacular sunset. look at the colors out here. we're in lower bucks county. it's just going to get nicer and nicer over the next hour. now, if you go farther to the north, let's take a look at easton and it looks pretty cloudy. just a few little specks of blue. obviously won't have a nice sunset that we're going to have. we had showers up towards the lehigh valley, bucks county. but farther to the south, things

have been pretty quiet and to our west, it's pretty quiet. so we're going to clear out tonight but it is going to get colder. 47 in mt. pocono, 60 in allentown now. near 70 in philadelphia and points to the south and east. but look how much colder it gets. overnight and by tomorrow morning, we are down in the 30s across parts of the area and we'll see how long the cold air stays and more rain is coming. i'll tell you when, coming up. all right. here's a look at some of the other stories we're following county-by-county at 4:00. in north hampton county, dozens of volunteers are getting ready for the elections. they are calling it a day of action and trying to get the word out to young voters. it was one of 60 similar events held across the state today.

the evening but it will not stay that way, though. keep that in mind as we go to northern delaware. it's even warmer. 68 in odessa. they got into the 70s and right now 68 in georgetown. the showers, well, they've continued to diminish. we have some near washington and baltimore that could affect delaware but other than that, things are pretty quiet. towards the left of your screen, it's not quiet. that's the next disturbance moving in right behind this cold air and so we're going to have a combination of colder and wet so it's going to get nasty around here. tomorrow morning it's just cold and then the clouds increase and here comes the rain, especially in the afternoon and especially

in delaware and south jersey. and we're talking about 40s most of the day. with rain and then here's another batch coming in on wednesday. that is some nasty stuff, too. and you are just not used to this. it is going to be a chilly, chilly period. take a look at some of these numbers as we go through the rest of the week. those are high temperatures. not very high. and when you're talking about days where temperatures don't get out of the 40s, that is really, really tough after we're near 70 today. we'll see how i'm dressed tomorrow. >> hopefully we'll still see it tomorrow, rain or shine. much more still ahead on nbc 10 news at 4:00. plus, talk of the "s" word

i love you guys too. you know that. yeah. tonight, we are learning new information about the texas church shooting massacre. here's what we know. 26 people are dead. 20 injured. at least ten of those victims are in critical condition tonight. investigators have reviewed security video from inside the church. as of right now, they have not released many details about it. during a news conference today, investigators say the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute. the shooter's mother-in-law attended the church.
