the corporal shot is in critical but stable condition. sky sky force 10 was overin plainfield township after writing a speeding ticket the corporal noticed a driver appeared to be under the influence of some drugs. this led to a fight between the driver and a trooper who was called in for backup. the driver shot several times and hit the corporal three of those times. the corporal was air lifted to st. luke's hospital. >> the troopers were in a knockdown, dragout fight along the side of the road with vehicles speeding by them and it got very violent. >> reporter: sources say the governor is in en route to the hospital to meet with those state troopers. i'm brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. >> our coverage continues with steven fisher who has been working to find out more about the injured trooper. >> what have you learned about that steven. >> we learned just in the last

half hour that this. trooper was shot three times and he was air lifted here to st. luks hospital where they worked on him throughout the flight and immediately after he was shot there on the ground along the highway. go ahead and take look. we had some video thehere. a lot of. troopers, cars and officers here at st. luks hospital. some of them even had some of those evidence bags carrying out of the hospital. the trooper shot has not been identified by police as of yet, but we did learn he's a corporal with the state police out of the belle fast r barracks. he was shot three times during that altercation along the highway. they did not tell us where he was shot. he was worked on at scene and throughout the flight to the hospital. police say he was critically injured. he did go through surgery this afternoon and police say they are encouraged by the progress he's made in the last few hours. he remains critical and not out of the woods just yet. >> our guy is up there fighting for his life.

storien continues at 4:30. harry hairston has been combing through the dispatch calls from today's shooting. he will join us at 4:30. more breaking news right now. this afternoon one person is dead after this small plane crash in the gulf of mexico. this is near the town of holiday, florida. the plane was found upside down in shallow water. investigators say they haven't found a flight plan, so they are not sure how many people were on that plane. we expect to get new information during a news conference at 4:30. they will release the name of the person killed and will bring you new information just as soon as we receive it. turning now to our first alert weather. another round of rain in our area as we track showers this afternoon. >> take a look at this. wait for it. really coming down there and

witnesses will be going to ntsb. we are assisting with the investigation and the forensics piece. i can tell you sadly it has turned into a recovery. e we recovered one body. there was a two-passenger plane but i can confirm there was only one body involve d. it's sad to say it's a friend of ours. it's roy holiday. many know roy as a cy young award inper one of the best pitchers that ever pitched in the game of baseball. we know roy as a person. he loved his boys tremendously. he coached our baseball teams. when he spoke to his family, he spoke with pride. the entire family we are so sad for your loss. and i can tell you we are praying tr you.

we know you are a family of faith and our hearts and prayers go out to you. e we know how much he means to you and i can tell you from the bottom of our hearts we know how much you all meant to him. roy meant a lot of the sheriffs office. i can tell you i'm not speaking on behalf of the family. i don't have the honor to do that. i definitely don't. because r they are going to have somebody better speak on their behalf. but i can speak as somebody who knew him. he was a part of our sheriffs office. his kids went to school with some of our kids. he was there wherever we needed him. he was probably one of the most humble human beings you'll ever meet. for somebody who won two cy young, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, he would walk in a room as if he was just anybody. didn't matter who he met, he was kind, generous, his family purchased a dog for us.

he's out there working and saving lives. making our community safer. he was out there with us and i saw him on friday. we had a charity fishing event. and sadly we were out in these waters right here fishing for charity. roy was out there with us. i can tell you being a pilot and flying planes was his passion. he would talk about it, aubt refurbishing planes. he had family involved in flying, his dad. so roy, he was one in a million. it's a true loss for us. i have no doubt he's looking down with god up in heaven. his heart was a heart of gold. he was an unbelievable human being. i'm blessed for knowing him. i have already gotten calls. they are trying to get down here as quick as possible because he was a personal friend of our sheriffs office. and so right now, we're going to

be working with this family to provide any assistance we can from the investigative standpoint it's ntsb. any updates will be coming from it them. it's a sad day for us here. it's a sad day for tampa bay. it's a sad day for anybody who loves major league baseball. even sadder day for the family. i ask that you you respect his family and nobody go to his home. please give them time to grieve. they deserve that. on behalf of the family, i would just say please pray for them. >> when did you know he was the person on board and who was killed? >> actually, when i was driving out, we got information it was a plane crash. that's all we had had. as we were in a meeting this afternoon discussing security for the week ahead, i was pulled out. they said the plane had gone

down. the tail number goes back to roy's plane. at that moment your heart sinks and you start priing. we started coming back this way because we were praying for the best that it could be a search and rescue and we were just going to be taking him to the hospital and something happened. and it just breaks our hearts. >> we have some information. but i don't want to put anything out there because i can't confirm it. they are the real investigative portion with the plane and the flight patterns. i can tell you where it came from and the information where people are tell iing us he came out of. if i give you that information, it probably could be wrong. i don't want to provide false information. >> do you have any reports of engine trouble? did anyone hear or e see anything right before the crash?

>> there are witnesses that saw thing, but that information is going to ntsb. the sheriffs office is is not involved in the crash investigation. so i don't want to put anything out there that ntsb wouldn't want us to release. >> did he say anything. all i know is that we got a call that came in that a call had crashed. >> can you describe what first responders saw when they arrived there? >> the maritime went out there. they were basically out there and the plane was down. there is some debris tu to the tide has shifted a little bit. from our standpoint it was a rescue mission. it was somebody goes down, it's a shallow water.

this is kind of on the flight pattern where people are getting lower. i can imagine from our perspective the deputies first arriving out there, they were hope iing the plane was low eno somebody could have ditched it and got out. >> you said there was some debris e found. >> the plane is in solid condition, but there is pieces of the plane that have e floated away. yes, due to tide and shifts and treating some of that for ntsb. >> where did it go? what happens to the plane? >> next few hours, right now ntsb is en route. they are coming to handle the investigation. we are assisting them. we are now in contact with them. anything they need we're providing for them.

as of right now, we're recovering some of the debris that has shifted off. our maritime is going to be sitting there guarding the boat. the other thing is to any citizens out there, this is not something to go out there and be an on lolooker about. have respect for the family, have respect for the deceased. just stay away from the area. there's nothing you're going to e see that you won't see later on through the investigation. our maritime unit will be out there patrolling and protecting that crime scene. >> a long line of aviation fanatics, people who love to fly. can you say anything how experienced he is at flying? >> i don't know how long of a history the family has had. i just know there are people in his family that fly. he loved to fly. he would talk about flying and refurbishing plans and how he grew up doing it.

it's a passion. he talked about his family e. he talked about baseball and he talked about flying. but it goes back to he's one of the nicest human beings. a lot of time people talk about athletes and egos or about money and cars. that was not roy. roy was the most down to earth person. if you had dropped something, roy would be the first one to bend down and pick it up. if you were in need, roy would be the first one to say how can i help you. except he was 6'6", you would have never guessed this guy was a professional athlete by the way he talked or spoke. he was the definition of a true human being. he defined what the word christian is. >> i left a voice mail with one of his family members. i can understand roy was a p

popular person. you're probably getting as a media standpoint a lot of people giving you information. there are people that we understand who are around here at the time plooef they saw roy's plane. word got out there. we were trying to ensure whatever word was the true word. we are part of the process. victim advocates have been out there. we'll be talking to family. i get it. like you, they have questions. they have a lot more questions. and they deserve to hear the answers first.

baseball. john clark is joining us live with more on the life and legacy of hal la daladay. roy halladay is survived by his wife and two boys. he was coaching his son's baseball team just yesterday. he was just 40 years old. the small plane crashed in shallow waters in the gulf of mexico off the coast near tampa where he lives. eyewitnesss say the engines were smoking. he was an avid flier and vie pilot. these videos were just over the last week. he just gotten b his new plane last month. he spent four seasons with the phillies. he won a cy young award and the only pitcher in baseball history to throw a perfect game and then a no-hitter in the playoffs in the same season and that was his first post season game. he would have certainly gone into the hall of fame.

he was eligible next year. and roy was with the phillys in spring training this year as a special instructor. and he spent time at the complex during the summer and just personally he was one of the more professional and classy players you'll ever meet. he was the first one in every single morning at spring training. 5:00 a.m. and his teammates followed his work earth. i'm john clark. we'll have a lot more for you at 5:00. >> we'll check back with you. the phillies have just released a statement and here it is. it says we are numb over the very tragic news of roy halladay's untimely death. there are no words to describe the sadness that the entire phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game. it is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to the family. that statement just in from the phillies organization as we continue to follow developments in the death of roy halladay.

we also continue to follow this breaking news in the lehigh valley. a state police trooper remains in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop. this happened just before 11:00 this morning in plainfield township. this officer was shot multiple times and being treated at the hospital. he did manage to return fire and hit the suspect. that suspect drove himself to the phospital and he was taken into custody. we're going to hear emergency radio calls that came in from that scene, that's coming up in just a few minutes. and here's a look at the closing bell on wall street. the dow ended up. the nasdaq and s&p closed down for the day.

very busy news afternoon with two breaking stories. a state. trooper shot three times after a gun bat wl a suspect on the side of the road. this all unfold ed after police say the trooper pulled over that suspect for speeding on route 33 in plainfield township. the trooper then believed the suspect was under the influence and that's when a fight broke out. that suspect shot the. trooper. the trooper is in critical but stable condition at st. luks hospital in bethlehem. also breaking right now. former phillies pitch roy halladay is dead after a small plane crash. it went down there in the gulf of mexico. halladay's body was recovered from the plane, found upside down and in pieces in the water there. the 40-year-old pitched for the phillies for four seasons including a cy young winning season.

hours ago 40 years old. fans knew him as doc, a name he got pitching early in his career. >> drey clark is live in the newsroom with new information about the crash. >> flying was hol la day's passion. he got his pilots license after retire in baseball in 2013. he was piloting his private plane when it crashed into shallow water off the gulf of mexico in florida. now the accident. happened near tampa where hol la day lived. they aren't saying what caused the crash, but witnesses say the engine was smoking. halladay bought the plane last month. it was here in philadelphia where halladay became the first pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game and a no-hitter in the same season. and just like phil lies fans, people in florida also came to love him too.
