mentioning him by name. >> virginia has told us to end the divisiveness, that we will not condone hatred and bigotry. and to end the politics that have torn this country apart. >> reporter: traveling in south korea, the president who endorsed gillespie but did not campaign for him, offered this criticism of the campaign overnight. ed gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what i stand for. phil murphy defeating state lieutenant governor, kim guardano. >> new jersey is coming back. >> reporter: guardano unable to distance herself from chris christie, known for his own combative style on display during this spat with a voter.

>> reporter: before the speech, the president trying to pull off a surprise visit to the dmz, before bad weather forced marine one to abandon the mission just five minutes before landing. white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders telling us that the president was disappointed and frustrated by that foiled trip. the white house told reporters that he wouldn't be making a stop at the demilitarized zone. the president said you'll be surprised. and sanders gathered a group of reporters before scheduled, revealing their secret destination with a piece of paper. the letters dmz scrawled across it. >> peter alexander in beijing, thank you. more to get to, including disturbing information about that church shooting in texas. we are learning about the gunman's past, a mental health

facility. and visits he made two gdays before the shooting. >> reporter: good morning. vice president pence will visit here later today, to try to offer comfort to the victims' families. the government has his cell phone. but they can't unlock it. and church members tell us he atended the fall festival with his kids, just five days before the shooting. video taken after devin kelley crashed his suv and took his own life with a single gunshot. it was recorded by johnny langendorff, who chased down kelley after he fled the church, and steven williford, who many are calling a hero for shooting kelly. >> turned his fight into flight. and i did what i had to do. >> reporter: and we're hearing from first responders to the massacre. >> there's no words for it. >> reporter: mike and jamie shah

them. sandra ward's grandchild is still in critical condition. she lost two other grandchildren. >> emily was the sweetest little helper. she was always smiling. brooke wanted to be a ballerina. wanted to do ballet. and she would do her arms up and kick and spin. doing her ballet. >> reporter: kelley should not have been able to legally buy the firearms he used in the massacre. but court records never made it on to the fbi's national database. secretary mattis has ordered an investigation, to find out why they didn't. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. also this morning, the tributes are pooring in for former baseball star pitcher, roy halladay. the two-time cy young winner was

killed on tuesday, in a small plane crash off of the coast of florida. >> reporter: good morning. the national transportation safety board is investigating the accident. it's too early to say why halladay's plane went down in the gulf of mexico. but word of his death is causing heartache for players and fans. shortly after they went to the plane. they realized the sole victim inside was someone they knew well. >> it's had to say, it's a friend of ours. it's roy halladay. >> roy halladay, has thrown a no-hitter. >> reporter: known by his nickname, doc, the 6'6", pitcher was in major league baseball for 16 seasons. >> it was a tremendous run. tremendous experience. something i'll never forget. >> on the 2-2. the breaki ining ball. that's a beauty. >> reporter: he won two cy young

awards. >> he means a lot to all of us. we're really going to miss him. >> reporter: the son of a pilot, halladay was passionate about flying. he got the light sport aircraft last month. his wife, brandie, expressed reservations about roy getting his license, in this video. but it's out in been removed by the company. >> i was against it. i got up in that plane, looked over and said, i get it. >> reporter: the 40-year-old star was the only person on the plane when it crashed in shallow water on tuesday. he was close with the sheriff's department. and he gave it money to get a canine. >> he was probably one of the most humble human beings you'll ever meet. >> icon, the manufacturer of halladay's plane, expressed condolences to the family and says it will do everything it

can to support the crash investigation. halladay leaves behind a wife and two sons. he will be eligible for baseball's hall of fame in 2019. >> thank you very much. a new twist in the m mysterious abduction of a california mother. police video shows sherri papini, on the morning she reappe reappeared. >> reporter: this morning, newly released images that may show sherri papini's first moments of freedom, after she says she was kidnapped and tortured for weeks. the video appears to show papini running across the church pork parking lot. an first responders saying she was shackled and beaten. this video critical in establishing a time line, was first overlooked by investigators, according to church members we spoke with

last year. investigators spent some time looking at the video from the cameras. >> that one, one over there. we went through the system and looked at them. >> did they find anything? >> reporter: now, detectives are releasing the video, hoping someone will come forward with investigation. last month, investigators released sketches of two women, that she says kidnapped her when she was out on a run. papini talked about who fights. one between her and her alleged kidnapping. one between the kidnaps, themselves. after she was found, papini's husband describing her injuries to nbc news. >> he put his arm around me and said, prepare yourself. they branded her. >> reporter: the papinis are thanking the community for their support, but asking for privacy, while investigators get more

exclusively. but first, their long journey to get here. jennifer appel and tasha fuiava's story reads like a novel. they headed for tahiti, with their two dogs, zeus and valenti valentine. that night, a major storm knocked out the antenna. they say another storm flooded their engine. at times, they say the boat was surrounded by sharks. the women say they shot out distress signals and shot flares at passing ships. but the repeated calls for help went unanswered. >> we had decided we were left for dead. >> reporter: they drifted 5,000 miles offcourse, before being rescued by the u.s. navy. >> i believed we were going to die in the next 24 hours. >> reporter: now, back on dry land, some are questioning their

story. the u.s. coast guard said there was an emergency beacon onboard, but they never turned it on. in a june, they made radio contact that identified itself as the "sea nymph" near tahiti. but they were not in distress. appel says they never got near tahiti. and that their gps track moves that. and the major storm the women say they hit the first night of their journey, the national weather service in honolulu says their record shows no major form system during hawaii during that time. and while the u.s. coast guard has no plans to investigate further, many others are wondering what really happened? jennifer and tasha are joining us exclusively. good morning. physically, emotionally, how are you guys doing? >> nbc has been phenomenal. "uss ashland" made the world a different place for us. >> i see the smiles. you're happy to be back on dry

land. >> yes. >> let's start with the first day. may 3rd. you say that first night, you faced a major storm, force 11, high winds. and it lasted for something like three days. what was it like to ride that storm out? >> i'm a heavy sleeper. when she said, bunker down with the boys, i knocked out like the dead. >> what was it like being on that sailboat? 50-foot sailboat? >> i'm used to sailing in the hawaiian waters. i'm used to small storms coming up. i didn't expect it to be what it was. i said, tasha, if i make a mistake doing this, we're going to die tonight. and she said, i trust you, go ahead, have fun. >> by the way, i'm a boater, i should tell you that. if i'm on a three-week trip from honolulu and tahiti, that happens to me on the first night, i'm turning around and going back. you didn't do that.

>> well, made modifications to the hull of the boat. so, the keel, the bottom part of the boat was 8'6". the two closest harbors, manila bay, is six foot deep. >> you can signal to someone you're in trouble. the national weather service says there's small craft advisories, they had no record, no prediction, no reports of a storm of the scale that you're talking about. how do you come to terms with that? >> i understand fish stories. i believe that the storm advisory that they put out for the area west of the big island was anticipated to be smaller than some of the downdrafts that we saw. i will agree that if you were

there, you would say the same thing i did. >> it felt big if you were on that sailboat. >> yeah. >> let me move further into this ordeal. middle of june, june 15th. the coast guard says on an unrelated search mission, they had received a phone call from friends or family members of yours, saying we haven't heard of these ladies. they got into radio contact with a boat that was called the "sea nymph." they heard from the crew of the "sea nymph," we're fine and we should get to tahiti tomorrow. who did they talk to? >> i have no idea. but garmon makes a great product. this is one of the gpss we had on our "sea nymph." it shows that we were nowhere near tahiti. >> you never spoke to the coast guard? >> we did speak to the coast guard, on the third day, after we came through the storm.

we saw them after we were at christmas island, when we were denied access to stop in at christmas island. and the next time we saw them was after "the ashland." >> can we talk about sharks? there was a part of the ordeal when you said sharks were around the boat for hours. and that they actually rammed the hull on occasion, in almost a coordinated attack. what was that like? >> terrifying. >> absolutely terrifying. >> we didn't -- we were too ignorant to realize what was going on. and the sharks were telling us, you're in our living room and you're not leaving fast enough. and we didn't realize that's what we were being told until too late. >> two things about that. scientists say sharks don't behavior that way. we'll take your story at its word. again, i'm a borte. that boater. that's when i would have pushed

the distress beacon. let's call for help. you never used the distress beacon. why? >> the sharks were six inches away. and using an eperb means that in the location we were, it's probably four hours to a day before the coast guard would have found us on a flyover. so, we took our chances with the man upstairs who gave us grace and allowed us to still be here today. >> you survived on dry goods. and you had a water purifier. >> katadine. >> fine. you will go back out. you will do this again? you will take a trip like this again? >> we wouldn't take a trip just like this again. we would take a trip with more preparation. >> you live from your mistakes. you prepare for what you handled. >> going through what you went through, does it bother you that you come back and people are questioning whether this ordeal existed in the pacific ocean or
