by witnesses who watched the plane go down not knowing roy hall d halliday was inside. >> pieces of the plane floating in the gulf of mexico reveal the fate of roy halliday, dead at the age of 40 following a crash. yesterday witnesses on the water rushed to the scene off the coast of st. petersburg, florida. >> we saw it go into the gulf of mexico. literally. >> the new video from tmz sports shows the moments before the crash. halliday flying high and low. with no may day call it was unclear if he was having trouble in the pilot's seat or if his maneuvers in the air were intentional. halliday who was with the team

for four seasons, received his pilot's license following retirement in 2013. reportedly clocking 800 hours of flying time. he owned the plane for less than a month. that plane can take off and land on the water. one aviation expert describes it as a jet ski with wings. there are less than two dozen in existence and the inventor of the plane died in a crash. a live look at citizens bank park. roy halliday was much more than a baseball player for philadelphia. still ahead at 4:30. nbc10's cydney long takes a closer look at his gift of giving back to the community that will be greatly missed. we continue with a pennsylvania state trooper who likely saved his own life after he was shot in the line of duty in northampton county.

>> corporal seth kelly, still in critical condition after being shot three times in a close quarters gun battle along route 33 yesterday. investigators say the suspect, daniel khalil clary admitted to shooting at kelly and another trooper before the troopers returned fire and hit him. nbc10 has team coverage of the big story from the lehigh valley. khan khan has been digging into the suspect's past. >> let's begin with steven fisher live at the police state barracks in bethlehem. we are learning more about the battle that unfolded before the gunfire, steven. >> reporter: it went from a traffic stop to a wrestling match and then the trooper was shot. fortunately he carried a turn kwet on him like the one i have here around my leg. police tell us after he was shot multiple times he was still able to adjust the turn kwet around one of his wounds. >> we are watching the video from the trooper's camera. we see everything going on.

>> route 33 southbound. >> reporter: state police watched dash-cam video that captured the horrifying events. >> all three were wrestling in the right lane of route 33. there were no vehicles coming at the time. >> reporter: corporal seth kelly and trooper ryan siepal tased 22-year-old daniel khalil clary. clary fell but not free and ran to get a gun from his car. >> he comes over the top of the roof of his vehicle, firing on both of our troopers. corporal kelly was along the passenger side of the vehicle. trooper siepal was behind the vehicle. >> there is one trooper shot. >> reporter: corporal kelly was shot multiple times in the neg, shoulder and leg but continued to fire back and hit clarey as he attempted to drive away. when the shooting stopped corporal kelly was severely injured but still able to act quickly. >> he carries a tourniquet on his belt and he pulled it off his belt and applied it to one

of his wounds. more than likely saving his own life. >> reporter: police paperwork says after clary drove himself to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds he admitted to shooting at both troopers and trying to take their gun. >> the two police officers had to use deadly force to protect themselves. i don't think that will be an issue in this case. >> reporter: corporal telly is still in critical condition in the hospital. i am told he is expected to have another surgery tonight or early tomorrow morning to try to remove more bullets. reporting live. steven fisher, nbc10 news. today the suspect was arraigned on attempted murder charges while lying in his hospital bed. khan khan is joining us live from the hospital. you spoke with neighbors of daniel khalil clary's in his hometown about the shooting. what did they have to say? >> reporter: they described his family as very quiet that kept to themselves. he we learned this afternoon that clary faced one minor

offense before this, for fighting when he was about 18 years old. we try tod reach out to his family. they had very little to say this afternoon. >> we are going through enough to have to deal with you guys. >> reporter: the family of 22-year-old daniel khalil clary had made plans to move from hir home. a plan a family friend told me was in the works but likely expedited because of the attempted murder charges he faces. neighbors say has lived on the quiet street for about two years with no problems. >> i don't know if he has past issues and, if he does, i hope that he gets the help he needs. >> reporter: clary has had trouble with the law, pleading guilty to a fight in 2014. police stay, while he was at the hospital he admitted to shooting at corporal kelly and trooper ryan siepal and trying to take the gun away from one of them. they say he was high on marijuana and failed field

sobriety tests before wrestling with troopers and then grabbing a gun from his car that he had no license to carry. neighbors say they can't believe this is unfolding so close to home. >> it's a little unsettling to know something like that happened because it could have happened at any moment. >> reporter: clary was shot in the back of the neck, his side and also his hand. he will remain at the hospital until he is transferred to prison. live in salisbury township, khan khan, nbc10 news. as we mentioned earlier, trooper kelly likely saved his own life after he was shot along the side of the road. all new at 5:00, nbc10's george spencer talks more about the tool that has become so critical for first aid in the streets. . now to your first alert weather. a live look at boathouse row where the temps will be dropping when the sun sets about 40 minutes from now. beautiful shot, though. a fall feel on the links today. these guys braved the colder

temps at dupont country club in wilmington to get maybe one last round in for the year. glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us live from the gloucester premium outlets today. >> since you're at the mall. if you are not dressed warmly enough, you need warmer gloves, you have them ready to go and you can get the proper attire. it does help to dress properly. coat, ear and scalp covered. it was 70 degrees a few days ago. at least we had sunshine and blue skies out there today. we'll take a look at the camera and see what we've got. mostly sunny skies. we're going to have clearing conditions during the night tonight. there is wilmington, delaware,

with fair-weather clouds out there. temperatures are only in the 40s north and west. pottstown and reading, lancaster haven't even gotten to 50 today. barely 50, low 50s around the philadelphia area. we are still like seven degrees below normal even with sunshine. a few more clouds farther south. if you look in the upper left part of the screen, the white line is a cold front that is going to be coming down tomorrow night. for tonight, the temperature not dropping a whole lot in the city of philadelphia, but outside, we're going to be dropping into the 30s in the suburbs, lehigh valley down to the freezing mark. again, these temperatures are well below average. but if you think those numbers are low, wait until you see the forecast for friday and into saturday. the coldest air of the season. a hard freeze in the philadelphia area.

i'll be back with more about what to expect for the rest of the week and when there will be more rain too coming up. >> all right, glenn. see you then. moving on now to decision 2017. democrat phil murphy is thanking voters today after being elected the next governor of new jersey. >> murphy greeted mutecommuterss morning at a train station near hoboken. murphy says it's an exciting time for the garden state. >> a big night in new jersey. it wasn't just our victory. it was a lot of different victories including ravi's here in hoboken. >> murphy takes office january 16th. he says he and republican governor chris christie will meet in the next few days to discuss the transition of government. murphy defeated lieutenant governor kim guadagno in tuesday's election. the victory came as virginia also picked a new democratic governor. democrats celebrating historic

elections in delaware county, beating out republican incumbents for two county council seats. the last time a democrat served on delaware county council was in 1980. democrats had historic wins in key races in bucks county as well. congressional democrats are celebrating as well saying last night's results opened the door for them to retake power next year. chuck schumer called the results a rejection of president trump and his policies. he warned they should be a stop sign for the republican tax plan. it's a plan he says hurts the suburbs by eliminating the state and local tax deduction. >> if you continue to try and eliminate the state and local deduction, you're going to kill suburban legislators who are already in trouble because the suburbs don't seem to like donald trump. >> speaker of the house paul ryan says the results places more pressure on republicans to

get things done. he spoke this morning at an event in washington. >> it doesn't change my reading of the current moment. it just emphasizes my reading of the current moment. we have a promise to keep. we need to get on with keeping the promise. >> ryan said the defeats make it for urgent for republicans to pass tax cuts because they were promised in the 2017 election. >> for more results tap the nbc10 app. today marks the one-year anniversary of president trump's victory over hillary clinton. >> mr. trump is marking the occasion in china. the president told reporters today he considered having a celebration party but white house officials say there are no plans to formally acknowledge the anniversary. china is the latest stop on the president's five-nation tour of asia. the 19-year-old accused of shooting a camden police officer will remain in custody. today the suspect and the injured officer came face to face again, but this time in this courtroom. the judge denied bail for the

suspect after considering ten arrests and three felony convictions in the past year. the officer made sure to show up even though he was in a wheelchair. last wednesday the officer was shot in the leg during a struggle with the suspect. the officer's dad said, despite his son still nursing a leg wound, he wasn't going to miss today's court hearing. >> he is a tough kid. it won't deter him. i guess that's why he made the appearance. he wants to show everybody he is doing well and the support he is getting. >> the officer is expected to make a full recovery. texas officials have released the names and ages of all 26 victims shot and killed during worship services at their church sunday. it comes the same day vice president mike pence visits the community to offer condolences and support. this is video of his motorcade making its way to sutherland

springs this afternoon. parishioners say the gunman devin kelley showed up at the church's fall festival with his kids five days before the shooting. today we hear from one woman who lost eight family members in the massacre. she said her family had helped the gunman's family in the past. >> she had actually given him hand-me-down clothes for a child. one minute we're angry, one minute we're sad. one minute we're mad. >> holly elliott's aunt, uncle cousin and 18-month-old baby girl were all murdered. she lost another cousin, his wife, their unborn baby and three of their children. now to coverage of the investigation into russian interference in the 2016 election. today the judge issued a gag order. that means no one involved in the case against former trump campaign aides paul manafort and rick gates can speak about it in public. the judge made the ruling so that potential jurors are not influenced by pretrial

publicity. they were indicted on charges of conspiracy against the united states as well as money laundering. president barack obama won't have to serve on a jury. he did report to a court in illinois this morning. cellphones were recording as he shook hands in the jury room. the obamas still own a home in chicago. he was the only prospective juror with secret service protection. tonight parents can learn about philadelphia's plan to take back control of its schools from the state. the city council chamber erupted as you hear in cheers last week as mayor kenney urged the school reform commission to disband. he longs to return to a local nine-member school board. the src will vote later this month. the first of several community meetings on the plan will begin

tonight at 6:00 in germantown. accusations today against kevin spacey a welcome saying he sexually abused her son and should go to jail. former news anchor hetter unruh says spacey bought her 18-year-old son drinks in a nightclub and then put his hands down the teen's pants. this happened in july of 2016 on nantucket island. she says her son was star struck and lied to the actor about being old enough to drink alcohol. >> whether he was over 21 or not,en kevin spacey had no right to sexually assault him. there was no consent. >> unruh's son filed a police report last week. this is the latest in a series of accusations against the actor, which has already led to the cancelation of his netflix show "house of cards." nbc news reached out to spacey's representatives for a response but have not heard back. the holiday season is just around the corner. it's a time of celebration.

and today in center city there was a reminder it's also a time to ensure your staying healthy. s cig first alert weather. a live look at the skies from the ppl camera. it's getting darker earlier but that looks like it will be a beautiful sunset. clear skies. look at the temperature. it is chilly today. and it will get chillier. first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us once again from the gloucester premium outlets. keep the warm jacket handy, right, glenn? >> yeah. i am not going to be putting it away anytime soon because that 70 degrees for monday is a thing of the past. and we are in a fairly long stretch of below normal temperatures. and in some cases way below normal temperatures. let's show you what it's like right now.

we have clear skies in much of the region. it's only 50 degrees. that's close to 10 degrees below normal in philadelphia. 49 in the suburbs. and of course, in the suburbs, it is going to be dropping even faster. we have temperatures in the upper 40s at the jersey shore right now. and near 50 degrees with a northeast wind. you can see some light rain down toward the southern tip of delaware. that's all going straight to the east. and the satellite is showing a little line across michigan. that is a cold front that will be approaching here. as we go through the night tonight, we'll have some clouds around and maybe even some rain around the -- some shore points. look at the temperature dropping where the skies are clear north and west of philadelphia, into the 30s. 34 in allentown by 11:00.

then tomorrow morning, again it's in the 30s across most of the area. but a fair amount of clouds. and then look at the showers developing later in the afternoon. north and west. that's a chilly rain in reading at 44. then some showers in the evening through the philadelphia area and south jersey. and then, whoa! it does get cold. friday, even at noontime, it's 29 degrees in allentown. that is cold. tomorrow, we have a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures in the 50s across much of the area. you can see one of the warm spots is rehoboth beach. then the cold air comes in. these are high temperatures. 43 in philadelphia friday. 42 saturday at night we'll be in the 20s throughout the area. that is just incredibly cold for this time of the year. the average high, 59. sunday we warm up a little bit.

52. but that's still well below normal. and even next week we're talking about temperatures way below normal with some rain added to the picture. so if you want the 70s to be coming back, it ain't happening for a while. now, with us out here at the gloucester premium outlets, we have meteorologist steve sosna. he has been helping us out here today. finding a lot of people to -- >> you have a lot of fans out here, glenn. if it's november, it's thanksgiving, it's black friday. most importantly it's glenn's annual winter forecast. how many years have you been making this forecast? >> this will be the 21st year. some years are tougher than others. >> 21 years you have been at this. as we know, it takes a village of information to put together this forecast. we have our equipment behind us right now. storm ranger, storm force.

tells us the now. but there are other clues out there that we look at to get an indication of where our winter may possibly be going. one of those is out in the pacific ocean. >> right. >> what in the world does the pacific ocean have to do with our weather? >> especially in the tropical pacific. the area, thousands of miles, it's called the la nina. the area in blue. on the bottom of the screen. that is covering thousands and thousands of miles, and when it's like that, it affects weather patterns all over the world. all over the pacific. our weather comes from west to east. >> right. >> that is a very important factor. >> not necessarily even the air but the water is a big clue. >> right. so the water off the atlantic coast are the next question. and we'll talk about that and the winter outlook airs tonight

we have new video today of the final moments before roy halladay's plane crashed off the florida coast. this is video from tmz sports. witnesses say the former phillies pitcher was flying close to the water in the moments before the plane went down. today pieces of the wreckage were pulled from the water. for many in philadelphia halladay was more than just a great baseball player. >> cydney long has more. >> reporter: he didn't just deliver on the pitcher's mound. he delivered community service in and around the city with phil

abundance. his main charitable organization. there are heavy hearts today. >> roy and his family were committed to our mission of getting food and helping to get people food and those in need. >> reporter: philly's largest hunger relief organization says feeding those in need is a cause halladay held close to his heart. he volunteered together with his wife and two boys. >> i think the opportunity was there with the phillies, fans feeding family is a program of the phillies with us. >> reporter: halladay didn't just work to knock out hunger. in philadelphia he continued to do the same. phil abundance says no one had to twist his arm to give back. >> you just had to say can you do it and he would just do it. >> people have been asking about them and sharing memories of him. >> reporter: at the pennsylvania spca steven wore his jersey to work today. >> he was a complete master of pitching. total stud. it's upsetting news. >> reporter: halladay made it a point from support his friend

camera. it's the time of year when more people are into the boutiques and restaurants and shops grabbing coffee instead of taking a stroll on the beach. it's still beautiful out there. glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us again from the gloucester premium outlets. >> it's only going to get colder, right? >> oh, yeah. we just went through october, the second warmest october ever recorded in philadelphia. and now all of a sudden in november, like that, it feels like december. we skipped a month. we have clear skies. that helped us out during the day. but once the sun sets, and remember, the sun is setting earlier now, it gets colder faster. and that is what is going to happen tonight. especially in the suburbs. there is a few, eastern, of lehigh valley where we had rain, sleet and some places got snow

flakes yesterday. now it's just nice and clear. but look at these temperatures. 42 degrees in mount pocono. yesterday at this time it was 32. 47 in reading and pottstown. didn't even hit 50 there today. already dropping in mount holly at 47, 48 atlantic city right now. the ocean still pretty close to 60 degrees. as we go through the night tonight in philadelphia we don't drop nearly as much in the city as we do in the suburbs. look, this is why we do neighborhood weather. some neighborhoods will be a lot colder than others tomorrow morning, as you can see. there is lehigh valley, 32. that's nearly a ten-degree difference between the lehigh valley and philadelphia on a clear, sunny morning. so this is typical. in our area, big differences across the region. that's why we do neighborhood weather. morin o -- more on the

unhealthy women having babies. it's a new trend that's putting moms and newborns at risk. a new study finds that about half of all maternal deaths in the u.s. are linked to preexisting conditions that began before pregnancy. diseases like asthma, diabetes and substance abuse. poor women living in rural communities have the highest risk. doctors say a mom's chronic illness also increases the chance of early delivery and still-birth. doctors think women with type 1 diabetes when plan to get pregnant need their blood sugar levels to be checked now. they should have the a 1 c hemoglobin under goal before

dwayne hill's diner added a gratuity so to some checks. the reason the diners' kids. especially on friday they are hit with large numbers of kids at one time, tying up the wait staff without tipping they say. >> the establishment. i have been going there since i was a child. with them, they don't understand and they just pay the bill. and you know, she don't understand that she had the right to not pay a tip. >> the owner says the menu clearly states the diner will add an 18% gratuity at their discretion. you can now cram twice as many characters in a tweet. twitter is doubling its iconic 140 character limit giving nearly everyone the option of using up to 280 characters in a tweet. users tweeting in chinese, japanese and korean still have the original limit because writing in that language using fewer characters. twitter hopes the expanded limit will get people tweeting more.

>> 11:00! >> that's how you've been spending your time this afternoon. >> i've been making good friends. glenn, this is kind of like a forensics case, if you will, putting together the winter weather forecast except it's for something in the future, not the past. we looked at the la nina last hour. what's the deal with the atlantic ocean and how does it play a part in the forecast this winter? >> forecasters talk about the pacific and la nina all the time making winter forecasts. they look all over the world. spending weeks researching this. this is a map in the atlantic ocean of ocean temperatures. >> a lot of red there. >> the red area is unbelievable. many of those areas are the warmest ever for this time of the year. and you have to believe that it's right off our coast, that exceptionally warm ocean is going to have an impact on weather patterns. >> a real impact. we'll find out what the impacts are tonight at 11:00 and glenn's

tonight we're learning new information about a knock-down, drag-out fight that turned into a shootout that left an officer injured and clinging to life. corporal seth kelly is in critical condition. >> the 13-year veteran was assisting another trooper with a traffic stop.

they started wrestling in the middle of a busy highway. the suspect got a gun and shot corporal kelly several times. he returned fire. after the gunfight stopped he was able to apply a tiourniquet to his wounds. >> he carries it on his belt. he pulled it off his belt and applied it to one of his wounds. more than likely saving his own life. >> corporal kelly had emergency surgery yesterday. more surgeries are scheduled to remove some of the remaining bullets. george spencer will have more on the tourniquet and the life saving tool ahead. first we begin with nbc10's khan khan live in salisbury township with new information about the suspect in this case. denise. >> reporter: according to these court documents daniel clary pleaded guilty to fighting back in 2014 and now faces more than a dozen counts in the attempted murder of a state trooper. the f
