a tractor-trailer goes up in flames creating gridlock for drivers on a popular road. salute their service. the delaware valley pays triblts to men and women who serve your country. a dance with dad. the emotional homecoming just in time for veterans day. right now at 6:00, a bitter blast of cold air. we are live at the italian market. and tonight as you're heading out it's going to feel like winter for a second straight night. good evening on this chilly saturday. i'm denise nakano. we set regard temperatures today, but is there a warm up on the way? we have first alert team coverage tonight. steve, how long will the cold be with us? >> well, the good news with all

of this, not very long. we still have a little bit more time to go with the record cold. it's subsiding. we're starting to look at chilly conditions. but these are the morning lows you can see out there. 22 at the northeast airport. we did set record lows in allentown, reading, wilmington, atlantic city but not in philadelphia. this it typical what you would see for january 5th. not for what you would see in the middle of november. so we will start to rebound. average high is 58 degrees. right now it's 38 degrees in philadelphia. we have the clouds rolling in. you saw that milky sky this afternoon. and that will keep a lid on temperatures on later on tonight. we won't see those really numbing numbers, but it's still going to be a cold night. the record cold is out of here. we don't have to worry anymore about that. but you still need the hats, the

gloves tonight. temperatures will drop down into the 20s, but the winds will be lighter. temperatures will return to the 40s tomorrow and next week we'll talk about that warm up. but someone not experiencing the warm up right now is andrea cline-thomas. what are people experiencing out there on this cold saturday? >> reporter: for me, i learned my lesson yesterday trying to find my gloves. based on your forecast, all of us are going to have to keep those around for just a few more days. it's that time of year to put on a coat and grab that heavy scarf before heading outside. it seems like fall came and went quickly. now winter weather begins to set in. >> layers, i learned that real early. at the links, players, coaches and fans did just that as they enjoyed the annual unity soccer

two women in the home screamed the man had a knife. police say three officers went back inside and repeatedly told the man to trop the weapon. police say the man lunged at an officer with the knife and police shot him once in the chest. he's in the hospital tonight. home of the free because of it brave. tonight we remember and honor those in the armed forces. nbc 10 drew smith shows us veterans day tribute in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. >> reporter: a brisk morning on the delaware river did not stop the crowd of people honoring veterans on the deck of the battleship new jersey. a new medal presentation onboard one of the ships. across the river, a celebration of 30 years at the philadelphia vietnam veterans memorial. >> this memorial shows that we have not forgotten them and we will never forget them. >> reporter: veterans laying

wreaths to remember those in uniform past and present. and in west philadelphia, a civil war reenactors made sure the graves in the cemetery had markers. >> i want to thank councilman jones. >> reporter: the st. james rotc presented flagpoles. >> it means a lot to me to have this here and to have this ceremony. >> reporter: this plaque bears the names of 42 veterans from the neighborhood who had fought in world war i. veterans say it's important to remember. >> we're the ones who put our lives on the line. >> reporter: and they hope a day like this can teach us something. >> maybe bring us back together, get us closer together. vice president mike pence

later leaves the tomb. every year a wreath is laid at the tomb and a bugler plays -- well, president trump told reporters onboard air force one today that president vladimir putin once again denied any interference with the 2016 election and he believes him. the two leaders didn't have a formal meeting, but they did talk while they were in vietnam for an economic summit. they did say in a joint statement they're determined to defeat isis in syria. roy moore made his first appearance today since sexual misconduct allegations were made against mim. a report by "the washington post" said moore made a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl back in 1979 and had pursued other teenage girls. >> i had not provided alcoholic beverages, beer or anything else to a minor.

u.s. army officer surprised his daughter jasmine after she led the prayer to starts the evening. this happened at the father daughter dance at archbishop carol high school. he's not seen his daughter in six months. this was one of two operation legacy projects taking place this weekend in pennsylvania. operation legacy gives veterans, families of the fallen and civilians the chance to lead and serve others in the community. the neighborhood kpleen up was just half of today's project. they also put together care packages for troops. now, this comes in the wake of i.c.e. raids in philadelphia and a push from the federal government to eliminate sanctuary cities. the resistance zones are an idea

samaritan she learned he was homeless. he recorded the meeting on facebook live. >> i said why did you do this, why did you give me this check back, because there's so many people who would have never given me this check. and he said he believes in god and god told him to. >> she wrote the man a very nice check that brought the man to tears. a bitter cold start to the day didn't prevent thousands of people from taking a swing at the rocky run at the art museum steps. we talked to the runners who braised our record breaking temperatures. >> reporter: thousands of runners, many doing their best sylvester stallone, kicked off their rucky run just after dawn. and had to keep moving to stay warm. >> layers upon layers. we doubled up on anything. >> great, love it.

>> reporter: not too cold? >> i'm from wisconsin. this is like a day at the beach. >> reporter: at least it wasn't this cold from rocky vi, stallone sprinting up the snow up the art museum steps. but today was a wake up call after a relatively mild fall. really feels like it took a while to get to this point. the last couple of weeks with warm weather, some green still on a lot of the trees from november. but last night thanks to the cold, more and more starting to fall down. a cleanup after waking up to leaves on the sidewalk. >> they came down, you know, at one time. we had summer, half fall and then a few days of cold and then back to what is supposed to be -- >> reporter: cold enough that everybody today was having lunch inside except for this little guy munching on an entire slice of pizza up in the branches as the leaves fall all around it.

in spring garden, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> the squirrel had the right idea. all you need is hot chocolate, right? >> you need that extra layer. i know a lot of people were worried yesterday, we were out, and they were asking is this a sign of our winter? >> we're hoping for a warm up soon? >> yeah. so a warm up is on the way. let's take a look outside now. you're not feeling that warm up just yet. it's still cold. but we're not going to see the teens we saw last night, and we certainly won't see the record low. so that is certainly one signal we're moving in a different direction. you'll really start to feel the rebound here as we head into the up coming workweek. that's because temperatures will spike back into the 50s and the average high this time of year is 58 decrease. so we'll be getting much closer to that. here's your temperature trend.

chilly today, 40, and monday back to work, back to school with 50 degrees and then we're into the lower and middle 50s by next week. it was just a quick shot of air, but one certainly noticeable. that chill still hanging around. 38 in philadelphia, 30 in the suburbs, 36 in lee high valley. you see that overcast sky that came in this afternoon. and i think those clouds will probably be hanging in here through the day tomorrow. 33 in west bradford township. 29 in fort washington, 32 right now in bertha an, and 32 in doylestown. so temperatures already subfreezing in parts of our area. where do we go tonight? well, we're not going to drop as low due to the cloud cover. about 31 in philadelphia. in the suburbs, coats, gloves all the winter works will need to be in gear here for tonight. and for the lee high valley arao you'll dip down to the mid-o20s.

waking up tomorrow in delaware you'll be around 31 degrees. and upper 20s to lower 30s along the jersey shore. you see these wind arrows are starting to funnel in from the east and southeast and eventually out of the south. and that will help draw up the warmer air into our workweek. maybe some milky sunshine. and temperatures tomorrow about 10 degrees warmer than where they were today. and we could even see a stray shower here tomorrow night into early monday morning maybe mixed with a wet snowflake or two, but the latest computer models are pushing that further to the north. again, not dealing with the record lows for overnight tonight. and here are your highs for tomorrow. upper 40s in philadelphia. lee high valley mid to upper 40s as well.

delaware and south jersey you may hit 50 tomorrow. so again we're turning the corner and getting rid of that real cold. the clouds will return here for the day tomorrow, and that certainly is a sign of the warmer air headed our way. so those clouds not necessarily a bad thing. 48 degrees here for tomorrow. 50 by the time we get into the monday. 52 degrees on tuesday. let's look at that warm up continuing right through the workweek here. friday we're looking at a few showers. >> thanks, steve. well, it's been on the air for more than 40 years, but "saturday night live" will mark a first for the show tonight. tiffany haddish will become the first black comedian to host the show. >> my actual goal was to be a cast member. >> haddish actually tried out for the show four years ago and
