good look at the fire damage. because the fire is still burning, they can't get inside to see what caused it. 151 people were evacuated from that building. >> the entire building is on fire. >> reporter: you can hear the urgency as the first officers arrived. >> we now have the police asking for the mass casualties. >> we saw this black smoke. i took off running down the h l hallway. i started getting my residents out. >> reporter: she said at first she heard a loud bang and then the smoke. she and other workers rushed to get elderly residents outside. >> i went banging on doors going to get my residents up. it is a fire. it is for real. it is not fake. make sure they had shoes on and coats on and start taking them out. >> reporter: once she was out, she saw how bad it really was. >> the roof was on fire.

>> reporter: on the ground, first responders' call for help almost shocked how fast the building was burning. firefighters from not just county over but other counties helped those to get into buses and in the coat. >> some we had to bring in beds and wheelchairs, because they couldn't transfer that quickly. >> once daylight broke, the bulk of the fire was out. smoke filled the air. what is left of the facility smoldered the rest of the day making it unsafe for invest gay fors to get inside and see what's left. >> reporter: to give you an idea, we are told one firefighter felt his helmet begin to melt. he was going in there trying to see if there were any residents left. police have said no one has called him saying my loved one is missing but they still say they are going through the list

making sure everyone here is accounted for. dean deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> hopefully, that is the case. thank you, deanna. >> more than 100 people have now lost their home and most of their belongings. those that were lucky to escape had to then brave the cold. >> believe me, i went through hell and more. >> now, those people are struggling to come to terms with how to rebuild less than a week before thanksgiving. steven fisher is live outside chester county hospital where many of those residents were taken. i know you spoke with one woman who was able to get out but with very few of her possessions. >> reporter: that woman was in her 90s. she requires a wheelchair. she told me this was a night she won't soon forget.

>> i will never forget it. it was cold. it was cold. >> reporter: it forced residents from barclay friends senior living facilities out into the cold night. their warmth and shelter was gone. what was there, thick smoke and the sound of ambulances coming and going for hours. >> i went through hell and more. >> reporter: she lives at barclay friends and will turn 94 in two weeks. she says last night was full of panic and confusion and the cold was unbearable. >> everything else was broken. it hurt. i couldn't use my right hand. i couldn't use nothing. >> it was very scary. the whole other side was completely engulfed in flames when we got there. >> reporter: before rushing to the facility, he said he grabbed as many blankets and coats as he could carry. one woman next to my mother was

to be wet everywhere. we have more on the timing and when it ends and how your sunday is going to be. >> runners paying close attention to the radar as they get ready for this year's philadelphia marathon. we have more on how people are getting ready at 4:15. police have made an arrest in the murder of a house sitter in gloucester county. the suspect had been released from jail a day before the killing. brandon wilson is charged with first-degree murder. he is accused of beating shenay carter to death. brandon wilson once lived in the house but didn't know the victim. burglary was the motive for the killing now, to sexual misconduct allegatio allegations against roy moore. roy's wife says her husband will not step down. she spoke out in defense of her husband. she says, he will not fighting for the people of alabama.

secretary serving under president george w. bush. the day after his corruption trial, new jersey senator, bob menendez is turning his attention to health care. he encouraged people to sign up for health care coverage. just yesterday, a jury was deliberating his fate. a mistrial was declared after the jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked. although he is back at work, his troubles may not be over. a senate inquiry plans to go forward. a story of heroism in northern california. a mother was shot five times while shielding her husband. tiffany pomthea says she doesn't feel well to show her face on the camera. one of her boys was shot and another in the foot and they were among 14 that was shot by

grand jury investigation that was opened by d.a., john morganelli. they are looking into whether it is appropriate for state police to investigate shootings by their own troopers. the judge rejected their request. >> one of the country's largest universities is suspending all activities at its fraternities because of cases involving hazing and alcohol. officials at ohio state made that decision last night. the university says it has been investigating about a third of its fraternities since the beginning of the year. this means they cannot have social events or recruit new members. nbc 10 told you about a loguele fra fraternity shutting down for two years because of underaged drinking. two students had to go to the hospital after party at sigma

chi. charges came down against a dozen others at penn state. 19-year-old sophomore, timothy piazza died after an alcohol-fueled event. the new charges came out after the fbi uncovered new surveillance video from a basement camera. a coach out of a job at rutgers, the school fired its women's swimming and diving coach amid emotional abuse claims. she had been accused of telling swimmers to lose weight, verbally bee rating them and ignoring mental health claims. rutgers made national headlines in 2013 after video surfaced of its basketball coach, mike rice, abusing players during practices. that led to rice's firing and the ousting of several top owe facials. the head of puerto rico's

electricity re-signed today days after a small company approved to rebuild the grid. schools are seeing a spike in enrollment following the devastation. the island closed hundreds of its schools leaving tens of thousands of children without an education. one of those schools seeing a bump is john b. stes so stetson school. they say it is changing the new students attitudes. >> i am accepting these new students. we just enrolled number 299. when they get here, they are often crying and saying a really hard time saying good-bye to their families when. they leave and come out at the end of the day, they are smiling. it is a huge credit to our staff. >> any are also offering orientation lunches to help the students get used to their new

because of that, investigators have not been able to get in to figure out how this fire started. in all, 27 residents were taken to the hospital after last night's fire. 17 are still in the hospital this afternoon. authorities say they are still working to make sure everyone is accounted for. despite that, no family member has come forward to say their loved one is missing. we continue to follow that breaking news out of new york city where fire has broken out in an apartment building. this is a live picture from upper manhattan. our sister station in new york says this is a six-story building on 114th and broadway. social media users reported seeing the thick flume of smoke from dozens of blocks away. you can see the flames there still on the roof. traffic cameras captured debris with flames falling down to the street as the roof of that building just crumbled. so far, there are no reports of any injuries. we'll keep you updated.

a tragedy in a mercer county town that changed the way every one keeps records. the 7-year-old p's legacy lived on to protect children. >> she died in july of 1994. a few months later, new jersey passed megan's law. by the mid 1990s all 50 states and the district of columbia had passed similar legislation. cydney long explains how the law is now going global. a 7-year-old new jersey girl is the reason parents, coaches and neighborhoods are notified when a convicted sex offender lives nearby. now, megan's law is going international. it is a measure that will protect children from child predators by denying them visas. >> if they travel we will be

cyborg is half man, half machine and the man that brings him to life is actor, ray fisher, who hails from camden county, long side. this is the second time he is playing cyborg. the first time was a small role in last year's "batman" versus superman, "dawn of justice." he is set to get the leading role. it is almost time for the thanksgiving travel rush. aaa expects 30 million people to fly this weeg kenkend. kids under age two are allowed to sit on their parents lap. they recommend taking car seats but not all safety seats are faa approved. those that are have a label on the side stating in red letters in it can be used for air travel. another problem. will that car seat fit into increasingly cramped quarters. that's another issue. take a good look.

make sure your seat will fit on the plane. no wider than 16 inches. here is a little tip i didn't know. there is another smaller and easily transportable option. it is called a care's harness. it converts airplane lap belts into this harness, goes around the seat and it is approved by the faa. airport security is gearing up for the thanksgiving rush. tsa officials held a show-and-tell in washington for people looking to bring those holiday leftovers with them. when it comes to flying with food, it needs to be 3.4 ounces or less and fit into a quart size bag. there is also a one bag per person maximum. that is tough. >> i'm eating more than that. >> with stuffing and cranberry sauce alone that is more than 3.4 ounces. >> a lot of people starting their holiday early and
