game trophy decision on hold until such time as i review all conservation facts. >> having elephants and lion system a huge driver to the economy. there are millions and millions of people from all over the world who go to africa to see these animals alive. >> reporter: now if the administration ends up easing restrictions, conservationists say it's a huge step backwards. >> we're essentially rolling out the red carpet for the next walter palmer. >> reporter: in 2015 minnesota dentist robert palmer killed cecil, a symbol of that country's who was being studied. >> if i had known this lion had a name skpand was important to country and a study, obviously i would not have taken it. dr. palmer faced fury the home and was forced to close his dental practice for two months. his vacation home van dalized.

in 2016 the obama administration listed the lion as threatened and barred americans from bringing them back as trophies after africa lost 43% of its lions in the previous two decades. but the u.s. fish and wildlife service disagreed earlier on friday saying the killing of trophy animals in zimbabwe will enhance the survival of the african elephant arguing the country uses the money to step up conservation efforts. this morning the big debate. will the dollar spent to hunt these animals really help save the species or is it all just an excuse to put a trophy on a wall? for "today", tom costello. questions still swirling around alabama senate candidate roy moore amid growing allegations he had inappropriate contact with young women decades ago. on friday his wife came to his defense along with dozens of other women who say they stand

behind him. m >> reporter: both sides are bracing for the final 25 days of this campaign, but it's questions about the past behavior of the republican nominee roy moore that continues to divide this state. in a little more than a week, at least nine women have made allegations against roy moore about inappropriate behavior stretching back decades. ranging from unwanted pursuing of teenagers to sexual assault. moore denies all claims of sexual misconduct. his campaign calls them, quote, politically motivated. >> we're in a battle. >> reporter: while he avoided the spotlight on friday, his wife did not. speaking before her husband's supporters. >> even after all the attacks against me, against my family, against the foundation and now against my husband, he will not step down. >> reporter: on friday alabama's governor said while she has no

reason not to believe his accusers, she still plans to vote for more to help republicans keep the majority in the u.s. senate. >> i will cast my ballot on december the 12th and i do believe that the nominee of the party is the one i will vote for. >> reporter: but not all women are convinced. in moore's hometown of gadsden, some of the scrutiny welcomed. >> i think it's an important issue and the truth needs to be dug out. there's things that have been known here for years that have gone unchecked. >> meanwhile the white house is pushing back on claims that president trump stayed silent about the allegations against moore. >> he said if the allegations are true he should step aside. he also weighed in when he supported the rnc's decision to withdraw resources from the state of alabama. >> reporter: moore oh opponent, democrat doug jones not mentioning his opponent by name, but acknowledging all the attention paid to this race. >> i think for all women we're at a tipping point in this country that we are seeing and we are empowering women to stand

up and speak out. i think that's a wonderful thing. >> for his part, democrat doug jones has benefited from moore's troubles. he's raised about a quarter of a million dollars a day since news of the scandal broke. >> mia for us in alabama. thank you. while president trump is keeping quiet about roy moore and the past sexual misconduct allegations against him personally, he's not hesitating to take on minnesota senator al franken who apologized for his own misdeeds back in 2006. he canceled two upcoming appearances as he deals with the fallout. kelly o'donnell is following it for us. >> reporter: it's easy to see how president trump has a lot riding on the outcome of the alabama senate race, which is why it is notable that he's relied on his spokes person, not his twitter feed or his own words on camera to comment about roy moore. that has stood out. however, the president has been

willing to use his twitter feed to criticize democrat al franken who's been a frequent trump critic. out of sight. senator al franken canceled book tour appearances for sunday and monday. fallout after his apologize for making an unwanted sexual advance toward lee ann tweeden. out of bounds. the white house says past complaints of sexual misconduct made by several women against president trump are not at issue now. >> senator franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn't. >> defending franken. women staffers who together released a letter saying he treated us with the utmost respect. lawmakers find their own reactions are under fire. senator gil brant who said president bill clinton sexual misconduct should have led to his resignation pushed back to

those who called her a hypocrite for accepting the clinton's help. >> bill clinton did important things for this country. my point is about the conversation we are having today and we need to have high standards for elected leaders. >> the harassment prompted a surprising strategy in ohio. in a facebook statement quoted by "the washington post," a democrat hoping to run for governor referred to the latest news as a national feeding frenzy about sexual indiscretions. bill o'neil then overshared. in the last 50 years i was sexually intimate with approximately 50000 females. o'neil's comments drew immediate bipartisan condemnation. for senator franken, he has not been seen publicly since all of this blew up. he has sent a personal handwritten letter to his accuser. she read that on television and

accepted his apology. senator franken has a little more time to lay low because the senate is now on its break for thanksgiving and is not due back to washington for more than a week. >> kelly thank you. president trump son-in-law and top adviser jared kushner is coming under fire for failing to disclose what lawmakers call a russian back door over tur involving a russian banker who has been accused of having links to organized crime as well as vladimir putin. says he is now ready to talk to special prosecutor robert mueller. an investigative and national security reporter for nbc news. ken, good to see you. thanks for coming in. the senate judiciary committee says that kushner's legal team has not turned overall of the documents requested, among these documents concerning a russian back door over tur and the dinner invite. what do we know about this

overture? >> this is another example of a russian with high level kremlin connections circling around the trump campaign. used of having russian organized crime connection something he denies was trying to get a meeting with a seep ynior level trump official. an e-mail chain made its way to jared kushner and kushner instructed people to pass on the meeting. his lawyer says that's exculpatory. but the problem is they didn't turn these documents over. this man did get a high level trump meeting with donald trump joou jr. according to him he had dinner with trump junior. investigators want to know more about that encounter. >> let's talk about the man who set up that meeting between donald trump jr. he's agreed to talk to bob mueller's team. not a lot is known about that

meeting. a couple things. why might he be so important to this administration, this investigation, and should the administration be worried? >> goldstone is important because he was the one who set up the meeting. he was the intermediary. he wrote these e-mails we've all read that said the russian government is trying to help your dad and this russian lawyer has incriminating information on hillary clinton. we've seen those e-mails. robert mueller wants to know what else he knows about how the meeting of set up, what was promised, what was delivered. he's a very important witness in the investigation. >> ken in washington this morning. thank you. some other big headlines we're following this morning. include an intense manhunt under way in norther florida, a day after three inmates broke out of jail. they escaped through the ceiling in the jail's library. stephan stephanie gosk is here with the latest.

>> residents in tloeflorida are edge and on the lookout. the sheriff said they were likely unarmed but should still be considered dangerous. search teams are out in the florida pan handle combing through heavily wooded areas. mu multiple agencies are part of the effort on foot and in the air. there's indication they may have left the area, but they are continuing to search locally. joel cooper, donald cotter man and casey martina are each charged with burglary while cotter man is also a sex offender who escaped prison once before in 1989. all three have long rap sheets and were awaiting court proceedings in the count jail when in the early morning hours the sheriff says they escaped through a hole in the ceiling of law library. >> the ceiling this a sheet rock covering and they were able to

breakthrough that sheet rock covering and get up into the ceiling. once they got between the sealing and the roof they made their way to the nearest door and dropped down and made their way out the door. >> last seen wearing sweats and long johns police closed schools on friday and toll the public to keep their eyes open. >> my girlfriend was scared to death. we have four kids. she's telling me she wants to get a gun. >> i know our sheriff's department does a wonderful job and i know they're going to get them. >> figuring out what to do when they get out. no money. no clothes. they will need support. that's often when law enforcement can catch up to them. until then, no doubt people in the panhandle of florida are making sure their doors are double bolted. back to you. >> stephanie, thank you. some 24 hours after five alarm fire tore through a nursing home in pennsylvania, authorities say they are still trying to account for everyone who had been inside when that fire broke out.

meanwhile investigators are also trying to figure out what caused the massive blaze that forced 140 people to flee for their lives. nbc kristen dolgren reports from pennsylvania. >> reporter: as flames ripped through the senior riffing center, some residents trapped inside in beds and wheelchairs unable to escape the inferno. >> it was heavy black smoke. you couldn't see. >> nurse assistant was on duty, one of the heroes who rushed in to help. >> i didn't think about me running out and leaving them in. i thought about getting them out to safety first. >> as she roused resident, high winds spread the blaze. >> hundreds of firefighters were soon joined by neighbors. >> a lot of them don't have anywhere to go and their families are scared. >> andrew and luke took an uber

from their college 20 minutes away. even after their grandmother was safe they stayed pushing others from danger. >> once we knew she was safe we were going to help. >> 27 were injured the mayor telling nbc news some people are missing. police won't confirm how many are unaccounted for. with more than 150 rescued many are calling it a miracle that so many are saved. >> we're brlessed to be out. >> nbc news. argentina is intensifying the search for a missing submarine with 44 crew members on board. there's been in communication for two days. officials believe an electrical outage may be to blame which would force the vessel to come to the surface. it was last confirmed to be in the south argentine sea.

>> a search is under way in pennsylvania for a suspect involved in the deadly shooting of a police officer. brian shaw tried to make a traffic stop last night when he was sthhot and kiellled during foot pursuit. they have recovered a vehicle. meanwhile a hunt for two suspects is under way in gainesville florida where a gun battle erupted after police responded to a domestic violence call there. both of those officers suffered minor injuries and are expected to be okay. ryan seacrest has released a formal state disputing a decade old misconduct allegation by a former wardrobe stylist. he says, quote, i dispute these reckless allegations and i plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result. i treat all my colleagues with kindness, dignity and understanding as this is a principle that's core to who i

am. seacrest apologized if he ever made the woman feel disrespected but he went on to say the majority of his colleagues have been women who he respects, advocates for and will continue to support. as "e" news conducts an internal investigation, seacrest says his track record will speak for itself. we've got nasty weather in parts of the country. >> if you are traveling it's the middle of the county that's going it see the trouble spots. take a look at what we saw in colorado. we did have snow falling in parts of colorado. you see kind of a car vision there driving into the snow. there were some spin outs and accidents because it's that time offier whe of of year have you to get used to driving in nasty weather. it's a sign of what's to come. this is moving through the midwest. heavy rain is the biggest factor with this storm system right now.

the heaviest rain is moving through iowa just south of chicago. also heavy rain moving into northern ohio and parts of western pennsylvania. the wind will be a big factor over the next day or so. 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts. we have wind advisories in effect. this will continue to move eastward. it's going to bring rain to the northeast as we go into sunday. back behind it winds are so strong we're going to see lake effect snow kick in. parts of upstate new york like syracuse could see a foot of sn good morning. i'm first alert meteorologist krystal klei. today we're looking at scattered showers moving through, particularly the afternoon hours although late morning it could start over the suburbs and lehigh valley. 54 for the forecast high in center city today. 49 in landsdale. and mid to upper 40s only lehigh valley again because the rain, thicker cloud coverage starts earlier north and west than south and east. in new jersey we could see spots get to mid and upper 50s. same deal jersey shore, atlantic

>> i had no idea who lebron james was because i don't watch football. >> basketball. good morning. i'm rosemary connors. just a few minutes before 7:30 on this saturday. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking a cold start to our day and rain later on. krystal. >> yeah, rosemary, that's exactly right. temperatures this morning are still pretty chilly. many of us are actually below freezing. we're at 38 in philadelphia and you can see from the live camera clouds are starting to spread across the region this morning. we're at 30 in the suburbs, 37 in delaware and still in the upper 20s over the lehigh valley. these temperatures are going to make their way into mostly the 50s as we get into the afternoon hours. but it comes with this rain. so already those showers are starting to approach us. right now still a mix of rain and freezing conditions, but by the time it will just be showers for the afternoon, tonight and early sunday morning. happening now, the half

in chester county today, investigators are hoping to go inside a senior living facility destroyed by fire. some people remain unaccounted for at the barclay friends community center in west chester. flames forced dozens of elderly and disabled residents into the cold early yesterday morning. some of them had to go to the hospital. and new from overnight, guests had to spend part of the night outside after a fire forced a hotel to be evacuated in montgomery county. heavy smoke filled the sheraton valley forge hotel around 11:45 last night. crews found the fire in the basement and put the flames out and guests were allowed to go back to their rooms. this weekend more than 2,000 top dogs will compete in the national dog show. judging begins today at the greater philadelphia expo center in oaks. the kennel club of philadelphia hosts the event. i'm dray clark, rosemary, krystal and i will have more news and weather and traffic -- not traffic, but news and weather at 8:30. noi back to "today" show.
