at one point several officers were in tactical gear, crowded this community and evacuated neighbors. >> tim furlong was there and joins us live at the police headquarters. bring us up to speed. >> the news briefing just wrapped up let's take this back to the beginning. i want to talk to you about how it started. detectives told us that police were called to the home for a welfare check. someone called to check the resident in the house because he made statements leading them to believe he might harm himself. once police got there, they heard shots from inside the home. the man's wife was inside. police now swarming the entire area. s sheltering in place. police moved in and took the man into custody. neighbors say they believe he was trying to kill himself. take a listen to what one neighbor told us. >> the. cop said to keep your heads up.

>> it's not clear what if any charges will be filed. the man had intentionally stabbed himself. he's now at the hospital. let's talk about the neighborhood that was shut down. the highway was shut down. i just checked google maps. it appears traffic is moving. we're going to keep you posted on the story. still a lot to learn. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. now to new details on how dozens of scared residents at a senior living home escaped a fire. four people are presumed dead in this happened last week and left many residents the home right before thanksgiving. denise nakano spent the day talking with a man who helped in

that rescue. >> these neighbors should be considered heroes. >> get in there and help. over the past several days, neighbors have relivid the tragedy of this fire that happened within walking distance of their homes. >> that's my house on the hill. this is a plume of smoke and cinder. >> reporter: joe's house overlooks what's left of the fire that displaced 133 people and presumably killed four others at the barclay friends senior home. >> total chaos. i ran out and saw that the clay was on fire. >> reporter: as first responders rushed into the burning building, one throwing a resident over his shoulder, a group of 50 neighbors including joe helped to keep residents warm and safe and get them even further away from the fire. >> to me the coolest thing of all of that was once you got kind of assigned a resident, you stayed with them. there were teenage kids in their

pajamas attached to a resident making sure they were okay. >> the first shows the inferno. the second the aftermath. >> the atf was back at the fire scene sifting through debris in search of evidence and remains. denise nakano, nbc 10 news. police may be close to making arrests in the case of a murder at aen montgomery county strip mall. sources say two persons of interest are now in custody. new video shows two people dressed in black at the scene of the crime. you can see them walking from one car to another in a parking lot off ridge pike in plymouth township. people in the area later found a 1-year-old man stabbed to death

in the front seat. >> a buick rear ended another car. soen went to go yocheck to see everything is all right. took a look inside the windshield of the vehicle, saw that the driver was covered in blood. >> police say they expect to file charges soon. and new video of a teen flash mob accused of beating and attacking people in center city. they assaulted police officers as well. this is surveillance vid yoeft suspects a they made their way along 18th. two teen girls have been charged, but police need help identifying the others. we are all counting down to thanksgiving and the holiday travel rush is here. on the left side of the screen, a live picture of center. check out conditions on the right side. that's along i-95. >> sky force 10 is live over the turnpike. george spencer is checking conditions there.

>> the businey holiday travel definitely looks to have started here. this is the eastbound lanes of the pennsylvania turnpike just looking like a solid pillar of headlights there. pennsylvania turnpike officials expect thanksgiving to be their busiest travel holiday of the entire year. more than 3.5 million vehicles expected on this roadway starting tonight anden continuing through sunday. the worst of it should be this evening and through the day tomorrow. george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> tammie souza is is joining us now and tracking the latest weather conditions. we have some rain to talk about. >> you saw the sunshine out there on those highways. we did have the clouds move in ahead of some of the rain as well. we're going to with dry conditions until very late tonight. the radar, nothing coming down across the area. if you're traveling this evening, you're going to be

after six years on the run. he arrived this afternoon. he faces a slew of charges including homicide by vehicle. authorities captured him back in january. he fled to the country in december of 2010 after learning that he had been charged in a deadly crash that happened in middletown township. the teacher's aid was killed in that crash. prosecutors say sotomayor was trying to pass another car illegally when heed into her car head on. now to the growing list of high profile names facing sexual misconduct allegations. today both cbs news and pbs fired charlie rose. it comes a day after eight women accused the long-time journalist. cbs news announced it was parting ways via twitter. he was spotted in new york city before learning he was being fired by cbs.

>> do you want to saying in to those accusers? >> eight women say rose groped them, was naked around them and made unwanted sexual advances. the allegations spanned the late 1990s through 2011. rose apologized for his behavior in a statement and said he was embarrassed by it. several prominent figures are facing sexual conduct allegations. it includes ken spacey. more than a dozen people have accuse the him of sexual assault. netflix cut ties with "house of cards" star following an accusation he made sexual advances on an underage teen decades ago. a new report says dised med med med media month gel. she signed a nondisclosure agreement.

weinstein's attorneys say they can't respond because of pending investigations. we are getting a new look at a woman accused of killing her 80-year-old grandfather inport richmond. this is patricia accused of stabbing her grandfather more than 40 times. police found his body last week inside the family's home. a next door neighbor told us police used cameras to catch the suspect. the cameras were set up by neighbors last year to deter crime. the camden county police officer shot in the line of duty was treat ed ed to a sixers gam last night. take a look at this tweet from police. he's a huge fan of the team. the day he went home from the hospital, he was wearing a joel embiid jersey. three weeks ago the officer was shot in the leg at point-blank range during what police described as a struggle. now facing multiple charges

a school is breaking ground on a brand new campus. >> officials from the city and the high school came together today to celebrate the ground breaking of the school's new campus. it's located at 17th and allegheny. the school has state of the art facilities built for modern education. it's scheduled to open in two years. dozens of students from the overbrooks school of the blind got a chance to take in a special showing of the musical. the kids sat in the front row for the performance at the academy of music. 100 tickets were donated by the rock school of the pennsylvania ballet. the holiday is almost here. packing up all the fixings. >> the blue bags will help hundreds of families who are spending thanksgiving in philly for the very first time. and hitting the road for the holiday. how much more your road trip will cost than last year and the avoid.

vulnerable victims. investigators are looking into babies addicted at birth. >> mitch blacher spent the day with one soon to be mom as she tried getting clean before she delivered. >> this is a story that begins in port richmond. it takes us to a health clinic in center city. it's about a mom-to-be hooked on heroin. she was an honor roll student. today she's six months pregnant and addicted to heroin. >> the good girl to this wild, crazy, big drug addict girl. and i want to get back to that girl. >> reporter: her family wants her back too. >> her mom says she finds needles all over the house. >> just a few months ago, she seemed to turn it around. but just days after her 26th

birthday, her fiance overdosed and she started using again. >> when's the last time you used? >> two days ago. >> reporter: on the day we spent with her, she tells us she's determined to get help, but says the high is hard to resist. >> why did you use two days ago? >> i had had money on me. people were saying it all around me. >> she's on her way to a clinic to ease her and her baby off the drugs. we take a bus to get there. and walk through one of philadelphia's notorious drug dens. >> is it hard to walk through here? >> not right now. i can walk through like nothing.

>> when we get off the train in center city, it's a short walk to the clinic. across the delaware valley, there are dozens of clinics where people help pregnant women overcome addiction every day. >> physicians will prescribe pain medication to women more commonly than they do the men. >> reporter: she couldn't talk to about patients, but many of the women she sees struggle with tall health problems and self-medicate to dole with them. pregnancy complicates treatment because simply stopping drug use isn't an option. >> remember that all the systems in that baby are developing. and if they are used to having some substance that's not there, particularly in the brain or spinal column, there could be defects. >> a lot to go back to. wants her home. she knows heroin has already taken so much from her. she doesn't want it to her baby

too. >> i don't know what it is. sometimes i b can't find out what it is inside of me. that keeps making me use. >> she's now in. a recovery center, but she's one of countless pregnant women hooked on heroin and other opioids. many of them start with legally prescribed pills and one of the problems with this epidemic is we don't know the long-term effects on child development. and one of the major finds in our investigation is that no one in pennsylvania is tracking the current number of opioid-addicted newborns and it makes it hard to pinpoint where the problem is at its worst and how to slow it down. so tonight we are taking our questions to harrisburg and going to ask the administration questions about what they are going to do to put the voex on voiceless borns. >> i know you have worked hard on this. this is such a delicate and complicated issue. >> and tragic. >> it shows you how strong this

>> keith will clean up the. kitchen. >> totally. do it every year. >> we have a lot going on the next couple days. it was a very pleasant day today. this may be the warmest day of the next ten. we're going to hope for something nice on saturday across the area. and then perhaps even one day next week. but for the most part, we're going to be cool to unseasonally cool on and off. look at that sunset. that's nothing short of spectacular cross the city. 59 or high today. we should be at 54. we exceeded normal values. didn't pick up any rain in our highest wind gust with 33 miles an hour. it's going to be a chilly thanksgiving. and then we have a few changes on the way. here's what you need to know. chilly on thanksgiving and for your black friday shopping. on thanksgiving the 40s, flirting with 50 for friday and both mornings will be chilly. you're going to need the coats and hats for all that wild shopping out there. a mixed weekend. saturday we'll hit 60.

we'll see some showers south across delaware. and sunday we're going to be much cooler and it will be quite breezy out there. next week will be a chilly start. monday, a chilly day. tuesday, a little warmer. ask then we get to a nice warm finish to next week. low rain chances, but not later tonight. there's a front that's pushing through michigan. you can see the rain ahead of it. that is going to combine with the moisture that's going to sflflow up the east coast and l tonight what we're going to deal with is showers across the area. some places may not get much of anything. by about 1:00 in the morning, we're still going to be at 50 degrees. that could be close to the high. and we'll see some scattered showers moving through. steadier rain for the commute. and especially across parts of delaware and into south jersey and the jersey shore by the time we get to the mid-part of tomorrow morning's commute. it should be out of here before noon and then temperatures start to fall by 7:30 tomorrow night.

whatever you're doing, stop and take a look at this video. firefighters were surprised to see three african elephants after getting call ed ed to a tractor-trailer fire in georgia. they got the elephant safely out of the trailer. the owners adopted these animals as babies and used them in educational shows. no word on what started that

fire. quite a scare when an suv crashed into the store barely missing a shopper. police in washington state say after the crash, the driver just backed up and took off. no one was hurt. i'm going to say it. we haven't seen snow yet. very cautious using ta word. always be prepare d if you work at an airport. >> e we got a chance to ride along with the crews from the lehigh airport. they are responsible for making sure all of their runways, parking lots and sidewalks are free of ice and snow. the biggest challenge clearing the long runways. crews say the supplies are in and they are ready for whatever mother nature throws at them. we have stockpiles of potassium that we have on, so we're ready for any winter weather have been. the runways are the width of a six-lane highway. the eagles mascot helped

near florida and louisiana. even nearing dallas. you see mild conditions phoenix north up to seattle where the showers are moving through. that's tonight overnight and into your wednesday morning. the showers continue near seattle. those are going to stick throughout your wednesday. but very dry through much of the country. then you see that cold front bringing showers to the mid-atlantic states as well. temperatures mild mostly in the 40s. then we get to your wednesday afternoon. if you have a flight wednesday, still going to be watching the showers near seattle. check out if you're going to the southwest. warm temperatures out there. phoenix at 85 degrees. and then it will be starting to get more chilly as we go through the afternoon in parts of new england. now if you are going locally and you're maybe driving tomorrow, here's what you can expect. you can see a few chance showers and some snow mixing in over new york and near pittsburgh as well. that line of rain is slicing

through our viewing area. this is tomorrow morning with that cold front. it extends through boston and down to d.c. this is out though in the morning hours. so around 8:00 a.m., it's starting to move offshore and it's a very clear picture the rest of the day if you're driving locally. so if you're driving today or tomorrow, morning snow flakes in northwest parts of pennsylvania. we're looking at a.m. showers, boston to d.c. otherwise it's a cool day, breezy and a cold night tomorrow. pretty good if you're hitting the road. if you are hitting the road this thanksgiving, the wonderful transition, a look at what you could shell out. gas prices in our area are up an average of 33 cents for thanksgiving week last year. in pennsylvania, regular gas is $2.78 a gallon. delaware is $2.44. new jersey it's $2.57. let's take a live look at the expressway from our presidential city apartment camera.

a florida radio station is running a contest, but not your typical prize. it's a chance to win a baby. >> the station got the idea after one of the hosts was getting fertilization treatments while his wife struggled to get pregnant. so the station decided to give away a free in vitro cycle in hopes of making someone a new parent for the holiday season. >> wow. septa is rolling out all the stops to make sure passengers watch their step. the transit authority released this video as part of their watch your step program. it's part of septa's effort to remind customers what they should do if they see someone acting in an unsafe manner on train platforms. the program is is just in time

thanks for joining us. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm jacqueline london. people who live near that crime scene are feeling relieved tonight. that's where deanna durante is joining us live. you broke the news that two people of interest have been identified. >> reporter: people in this neighborhood behind me have been getting calls alerting them they are safe. this after about this time last night we're told two people apparently parked their car at the outback steak house, came into this parking lot, got into a car with another man who then crashed his car into parked cars along the side. investigators say that man was stabbed. it's video police had in the minute after the killing. watch as two people dressed in black crossed from one parking lot to another. just at the top corner of your screen, you can see the people get into a car. a little while later they take off running back to the waiting car in the parking lot of outback steakhouse. the people tracked blood across two parking lots.
