around people. >> today is the big push from brick and mortar stores competing with online retailers trying to get customers off the couch and away from their computers. i'm keith jones. >> i'm erin coleman. in pennsylvania, shoppers were out early searching for deals in limerick. you can see lines stretched outside some stores, forcing people to wait out in the cold to get their hands on those hot discounts. in new jersey, a similar shopping frenzy in cherry hill before the turkey had a chance to digest. some anchor stores at the cherry hill mall stayed open all night long. for some, the shopping is about savings. for others it's a holiday tradition. >> we'll find really good deals. we shop for our moms. we'll buy a couple things. >> then we go eat. >> then we go eat. >> reporter: you make the whole day? >> a whole morning. >> whole morning.

>> then we go home and go to sleep. >> it's fun to get out and be with friends and have a good time. >> and stay off of work. >> there is plenty of cheer to take in along the way. this year the mall has an interactive christmas story display. in delaware, shoppers were scooping up tax free bargains in newark. like most malls, they are open until 10:00 night. there is still time to do some shopping after the newscast, of course. nbc 10 has team coverage if you're planning to head out. tammie souza has your shopping forecast for this evening. >> let's begin with george spencer, live at the biggest mall on the east coast. king of prussiprussia. you couldn't even get in the parking lot when i drove by earlier. >> reporter: all afternoon, just like that, it is really as bustling as it gets. we pulled in about 2:00 this afternoon and the stream of traffic, not moving traffic at this point, has not thinned at

all since 2:00. the parking lots are packed. definitely by the looks of all of it, this black friday is not disappointing either here in person or online. you could hear the holiday cheer in stores today and outside the shops at the premium outlets. you could see the evidence of black friday excitement. shopper after shopper loaded down with their loot. beth price and her family had been out since the early hours this morning. >> we've been doing it for years. so this is a family tradition for us. >> reporter: down at the christiana mall, this mega shopping day was perhaps a little less hectic. but the deals were still just as good. >> we were able to get in and out of stores, even though they're crowded. the people working inside the stores are very good. >> reporter: nationwide, surging online sales and a shift away from store shopping have thinned crowds over the past two years.

the rowan university grads behind bestblackfriday.com are a prime example of the shift. their website curates the best online deals and directs you straight to them. yesterday alone, they had four million unique visitors. >> until a few years ago, people weren't buying online. it was all in store only. >> reporter: for this time, the online peak hit last night around 6:00 p.m. but for many of the folks out and about today, like price, online shopping is just one component. they say there's still something special about that in store feel. >> i still like going out to the store and seeing things. every now and then we'll go with amazon. for the most part i like being around people. >> reporter: so if you're one of those people who really enjoy that person to person black friday frenzy, all of the simon malls will be open for a couple more hours tonight. you know, you can see just how big this holiday has become by

water has been off for a couple of hours. you can see the philadelphia walter department, they've completed their work for the day. but just a few hours ago, just before noon today, this road, it was still a river of water. >> i noticed this morning when i woke up our water pressure was low. when i got over here i saw this. >> reporter: george says this neighborhood's calls to the water department went unanswered for hours. >> it looks like a river. like, if you look at it, it's crazy. >> reporter: james called too. >> we called the water department. they said a lot of people were on holiday. so it's like, unacceptable, i think. >> reporter: the philadelphia water department says it was here wednesday to check out what someone reported as a water sound. by late thursday, you could hear and see it. the water department spokesman said they got calls after 7:00 thursday night. >> we did look at it. we were -- determined it could

stay on, allowing water service to stay on to the homes. >> reporter: it's true, the water department had limited staff on thanksgiving. staff said they also considered the impact of shutting off a neighborhood's water in the middle of thanksgiving dinner. we're told there was no evidence of risk to people or property, so the water stayed on. >> it's not completely abnormal that on a holiday like thanksgiving or christmas, when we are not fully staffed, that water main breaks could in essence run for day or so. >> reporter: by late friday morning, the eight inch water main below fowler street was off. crews expect to have the water back on before the morning. and one of the reasons you saw so much water gushing from such a small pipe is because they have to have a bunch of pressure to get it up the hills here in roxberro. we'll take a look at how the water department is preparing and why they say they're expecting more water main breaks

as the season rolls on. i'm mitch blocker nbc 10 news. the holiday weekend came to a fiery end for family in philadelphia. the woman who owns that row home there was returning from a thanksgiving get together and that's what she saw. the woman has lived at the house on east price street for about 30 years. her son was inside when the flames broke out. he did make it out okay. despite the damage, she remains optimistic saying everything happens for a reason. >> something good is going to come out of this. i'm not trusting jesus for nothing. >> they told me to evacuate and i grabbed my animals and i put them in a car. >> no animals were hurt but several homes nearby are damaged. no word on what started the far. we have new details on a gruesome scene at a center city septa station. police believe a charred body found on top of a train is that

of a young man, possibly a teenager. it happened at the jefferson station just before 8:00 this morning. investigators say the body was laying on top of the train near its power lines. they're working to identify that person and how he died. the investigation caused delays on several regional rail lines this morning. at least 235 people are dead, more than 100 hurt after an attack on a mosque in egypt's sinai peninsula. this map gives you an idea of where the attack happened, northeast of cairo. police said the militants opened fire from four off road vehicles on the hundreds of worshippers. they also blocked off escape routes from the area by blowing up cars. it is the deadliest ever attack by islamic extremists in egypt. no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, both egypt's president and president trump have condemned it. actressuma therman is using social media to speak out about the hollywood sex assault

scandal. she worked with harvey wine stein on movies, including pulp fiction. she posted a message to her followers saying she was grateful for all those i love and have the courage to stand up for others. she added, i feel it's important to take your time, be fair, be exact. so happy thanksgiving, everyone except you, harvey and all your wicked conspirators. i'm glad it's going slowly. you don't deserve a bullet, stay tuned. after the first wave of allegations against weinstein emerged in october, therman said this to access hollywood. >> when i've spoken in anger i usually regret the way i express myself. so i've been waiting to feel less angry. and when i'm ready i'll say what i have to say.

>> weinstein is accused by dozens of women of sexual harassment or sexual assault. he has denied all the allegations of nonconsensual sex but he has apologized. senator al franken is apologizing again. the minnesota democrat was accused of inappropriately touching women issued a new statement. it says, in part, some women have found my greetings or embraces for a hug or photo inappropriate. i respect their feelings about that. he went on to say he's sorry he made some women feel badly, and he will be more careful and sense t sensitive. he says he has no plans to resign. south africa's supreme court of appeal, more than doubled the prison sentence for oscar pistorious today. the verdict was unanimous and unexpected. the olympian wasn't in court. he was originally convicted of manslaughter.

that was changed to a murder conviction. he will now serve 13 years and five months and could be moved to a high security prison to serve the rest of his sentence. a woman has been arrested and charged, accused of killing a highway department worker back in september. she is charged with homicide by vehicle. police say on september 5th, she drove over an orange cone, hitting two workers on west broad street. you can see in this video from sky force 10, the windshield on the car is smashed. one of the workers died. she is expected in court later this month. volkswagen is paying out billions of dollars for its emissions scandal. new jersey will be seeing a lot of that money. governor chris christie says the state will get more than $72 million from the settlement. that is one of the largest amounts given to any state. new jersey will receive $69 million as part of a different lawsuit. the automaker was fined $30 billion after it was caught

rigging two of its diesel engines to pass u.s. emissions test. more students are choosing delaware colleges than ever, both the university of delaware and delaware state university have seen record enrollment this year. at ud, enrollment is up 3% with nearly 24,000 students. dsu says it broke a record this year, too with more than 4,600 students. the increase comes amid a national trend of declining college enrollments. 20 minutes of non-stop news continues now with the holiday tradition at penn's landing. >> winter fest made its return to the blue cross river rink to a fall alternative to the clouded stores. that's where aundrea cline-thomas joins us live. it is packed out there. >> reporter: i know, we're only a few hours in on the first day of winter fest. look at how many people are here. family came here to make new memories and also to lace up

foxchase, 51. parkwood at 50. so we're just shy of where we should be, which is 53 for our seasonal high pressure this time of year. outside, doppler radar sweeping the sky, not picking up anything. we don't have any precipitation here. we don't have any in the state of pennsylvania. a little bit further to the west, we have a line of showers and storms crossing parts of iowa and minnesota and wisconsin. that's going to lean in our direction. it looks like by late tomorrow night, perhaps parts of the pennsylvania suburbs, berks county, lehigh valley may see a shower. it's iffy if we'll see an isolated shower in philadelphia. by tonight, we'll be watching winds out of the southeast and watch the temperature drop to 39 under clear skies. then for tomorrow, you'll wake up, it will be a little bit warmer. it will be in the mid and upper 40s to tomorrow. it will be a little bit more pleasant with a south wind taking us into the mid and upper 50s. that's tomorrow afternoon before the clouds start to move in. look at the dots of green.

black friday is here. and the malls aren't the only place to find deals. experts say car shoppers may find black friday offers to be the year's best auto deals with the end of the year nearing, dealerships are eager to make way for new models. manufacturers are offering incentives like cash bank and low interest through 0%

financing. a virginia family has joined forces with a consumer group to push for a recall of more than 150 mini vans. dozens of owners have lodged complaints that their vehicles are stalling while they're driving. >> consumer reporter susan hogan has important information you need to hear. >> reporter: adam and alison cohen purchased their minivan for the same reason most parents do, safety. >> we fell in love with it. the features were beautiful. >> reporter: on two separate occasions, they say their 2017 chrysler pacifica lost power and stalled while alison was driving one of their children. >> the car is off, you don't have power steering, you can't accelerate. i was in the middle of an intersection and it just stopped. >> reporter: the cohens are more of one of 50 consumers who filed

complaints. car owners describing how their vehicles stalled while in drive. >> it won't let me move. >> reporter: this driver says he recorded the incident after he safely pulled over. alleging his pacifica stalled while driving in the fast lane on a busy san francisco freeway. >> stalling is an incredibly dangerous problem. >> reporter: this week, the center for auto safety, along with the cohens failed a petition with nitsa to investigate stalling issues. >> we want to see chrysler get these cars off the road and give people a loaner and figure out what the problem is and fix it. >> reporter: the cohens refused to drive their pacifica. >> i don't have the luxury of waiting for them to be action and chrysler wasn't doing anything about it. that's when we decided we had to do more. >> reporter: we reached out to chrysler, the company says it's unaware of any injuries or accidents associated with the complaints. in most incidents customers were

people who start their daily grind on public transportation may want to protect their ears. a new study shows the commuters are often exposed to loud bursts of noises, trains, bus and even while biking. researchers say these high decibel sounds can be harmful and transit systems should look into ways to reduce that noise. parents of newborns are well aware of the challenges that come with making sure their baby gets enough sleep. a new study shows dad play as key role, experts say, when the father is more involved both the mother and baby sleep patterns improve. yeah. doctors suggest dad help with diapering, walking, snuggling, and helping the baby lay down for bed. parents need to keep in mind, your restless nights won't last forever. >> their body is biologically more ready to combine their sleep patterns and sleep better, sleep longer. if the partner has helped, then they're more likely to have a
