it's unclear when the policy will take full effect. courts in san francisco and richmond will be holding arguments on the legality of the ban this week. in the breaking news center, jacqueline london, nbc news. now to a philadelphia rapper's fight for freedom. a judge denied meek mill's request for a bail hearing. judge denise brinkley says he's a flight risk. >> deanna durante spent the day digging through several documents related to this case and she's joining us live in center city. >> reporter: it's strong but not unexpected. she's sticking by her reasoning saying that meek mill is a threat to public safety and a flight risk. now he's facing significant lifetime. his jail sentence has been met with protests. buses turning to billboards and the reverend al sharpton making

a jailhouse visit. today a philadelphia judge gives her side. in court filings, she says she refuses to let rapper meek mill out on bail because she fears he's a flight risk, saying he's facing significant jail time. he had a 2017 probation violation. more than ten years ago he was charged in a drug and assault case. the judge says that williams used a dirt bike for drug sales back in 2007 and in 2017 when he popped wheelies on a new york city street, he was again on a dirt bike. she said the artists has failed drug screenings while on probation and says in an unscheduled probation visit to his home, he tested positive for drugs and was in possession of fast flush. it's unclear if he used that to

mask his urine since this had been a current theme for his violations while on probation. and defense lawyers followed up saying that the judge should recuse herself saying that there is an fbi filing investigating her handling of this case. reporting live, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. coming up at 5:30, with this setback, what are the next steps for the rapper's defense team? we'll take a closer look at that and get insight from our legal experts. in the meantime, two developing stories out of delaware. first, a death investigation underway at a wilmington motel. bureau reporter tim furlong is joining us live in wilmington with more on this story. what have you found out? >> reporter: this used to be the prince motel and now it's day one motel.

behind me, tow trucks are coming in to remove a couple of vehicles that were involved in whatever it is that is happening. police are not saying at this point what exactly this is other than it's a death investigation. they also tell me that there is no reason to believe that there's some other crime scene or reason to be concerned outside of this property here along governor prince boulevard. they've been focused on room 104 and they have been talking to people at the scene. one man is very teary-eyed and walked away and didn't want to talk to us or answer any questions. he came and went pretty quickly. detectives have been making notify asia notifications and they'll let us know more about what happened here. it went out over the police scanner and the emergency alert system as two people shot at this motel and so that is what we were initially going on. we're trying to learn more and police promise as soon as they get more confirmation, they'll give us more information. that story is live, tim furlong

being nbc 10 news. >> tim, we look to you for more information as we get it. also in delaware, high-rise rescue. firefighters put residence to safety after a fire. the apartment building on society drive went up in flames a couple of hours ago. right now first responders believe everyone got out okay. new information in the beating death of a 57-year-old homeless man in philadelphia. police say three teenagers are charg charged as adults in the murder. police say the teens tried to rob kevin cullen on loring street after beating him. witnesses told police they heard the suspects laughing after allegedly slamming cullen's head into a brick wall during that attack. when paramedics found him unconscious, his pockets were

urn u turned inside out. >> robbery has tragic consequences and this man died as a result of it and these three young men are going to go to jail for some time. >> no money was taken during the attack. all three teens attended lincoln high school. they are being held without bail. an attempted robbery at a pharmacist ended with a pharmacist firing his own gun. >> two men jumped the counter on thursday night in winslow township. one of them grabbed a woman and held the gun to her head and that's when the pharmacist grabbed his own gun and fired back. >> we live right up the road. it's a little concerning. >> both suspects managed to get away. the pharmacist's hand was grazed by a bullet but he should be okay. police are looking for a man who stole from a nonprofit. this is at people for people on

realtime updates and it's free. president trump taking a stand and defending michael flynn. today the president's supporters and critics are arguing whether trump can be charged with obstruction of justice and it all stems from one tweet. >> reporter: president trump greeting supporters as he arrived in utah. but before he left, showing his own subpoena for michael flynn who was fired and has now pled guilty for lying to the fbi. >> i feel badly for general flynn. i feel very badly. he's led a very strong life. >> reporter: mr. trump's team playing cleanup and the president's personal attorney saying he's the one who wrote that tweet calling it poorly woo worded. why does it matter? trump said he knew that he lied

flynn's guilty plea. coons said, "attacks on the integrity of the fbi from the president are highly inappropriate under the law." drugs are being blamed for the sudden deaths of two students at temple university. james orlando was found dead yesterday morning. the philadelphia medical examiner's office says he died from drug intoxication, the same cause of death given for michael patas found unresponsive at his school's library. the medical examiner's office is not saying what drugs were found in their systems. there is a death investigation as police responded to a row home on the 1200 block of johns son street and found a 65-year-old man dead on his bedroom floor. he had been stabbed several times in the n. police are speaking with a woman

today a philadelphia judge shot down meek mill's bail request. a legal analyst is joining us now. thanks for being here. the judge goes into specifics and says that meek mill may have cheated on drug tests in the past. what do you make of this? >> superior court said that the judge needed to make a decision and to justify the reasons for that decision. what the judge did was write a seven-page opinion with many exhibits attached and talks about the various different reasons and all of the different things that took place since he's been on probation, going

back to the beginning. she talked about a warning, everything that occurred, stuff that incurred involving drug tests and things of that nature and what the judge did was carefully laid out all of the reasons to justify her reason for denying bail in this case. >> meek mill's lawyers will continue to fight for his release. what are his options at this point? >> at this point now, she has made a decision and they can now appeal to speier your superior . now a decision has been made and they still retain the appeal rights. they have to show there was an abuse of discretion. a judge in that case was very careful to list all of her reasons for why she did deny bail and it's going to be hard for superior court to say that it was an abuse of her discretion as a judge to deny bail in this particular case. >> we'll see where this goes from here. nbc 10 legal analyst, thanks for your insight.

we know it's coming but are we really ready for that kind of cold? no. you can see the streak in the cloud cover so look at the sprinkles of green and spotty rain showers that are going through parts of ohio and moving in our direction. you can see this line of yellows, reds, oranges. we will get a line of rain by tomorrow evening. now, there's the cold front and the coloration that you see on the map is the temperature trend. the deep blues and purples

indicate very cold air. we're going to have a very mild tuesday as well. temperatures are still going to be above average but that, yeah, is getting closer and closer. and by wednesday and thursday and friday, this keeps going. we have a cold blast right atop of us. let's talk tomorrow first. 62 in tacony. we have a chance of rain moving through. allentown, 57. 61 in vorhees and dover with a forecast high of 63 degrees. and certainly tomorrow morning, you'll want to get the umbrella because you'll see steady rain throughout our neighborhoods. let's go through the hour by

hour. overnight clouds increase. could you see isolated sprinkles? yes. in the afternoon, the rain moves in with the cold front itself. and it's really spread across the map here as we go into tomorrow night. this is a good bit of rain. and all the temperatures are way too warm for anything but rain. so no worries, no snow, anything like that. the rain continues to move out as we go into wednesday morning. by 6:00, 7:00 a.m., possibly lingering rain and most of us have the clouds and we start to clear out and, oh, boy, we start to cool things down. like i showed you a moment ago, tomorrow, 60 degrees in the afternoon. not a bad forecast. wednesday morning, lingering showers. still at 55 degrees. as the cold front passes and the air settles in, look at wednesday afternoon. this isn't typical.

our high hits in the morning and we talk low mid-40s wednesday afternoon and then that trend, it just keeps on falling. 60 goes to 55. falling temperatures through the day on wednesday and showers dry out. 44 for a high and focus on the lows. in the 20s is where they stay. on top of that, friday evening flurries lasting into saturday. it's possible on sunday. we could see flurries and then next week again a shot at snow showers. the short list is out for "time" magazine person of the year. >> and these are not individuals. they are groups. a look at some of the finalists ahead. and investigators just released this shid ohio of a shooting. ahead at 5:00, where police eventually handcuffed the suspect.

i want to tell you about some students recovering after a van crashed into their school bus in delaware county. the crash happened around 7:30 this morning on west second street in chester. police say the driver of the van was trying to change lanes when it collided with the bus. seven students and the van driver were taken to the hospital. new at 5:00, a judge denied

to reduce charges after a radio host was killed back in 2012. james kaufman was arrested at his office. he brandished a gun when agents showed up with a warrant. prosecutors say the search warrants were issued as a probe into suspected criminal activity not in connection with his wife's death. new at 5:00, video of a shotting shooting at a hospital in bakersfield. you can see the gunman standing outside of the locked glass door. he fired shots into the glass and entered through the emergency room and patients and staff went running. suspect was eventually shot by police in the parking lot. he was then treated at the same hospital. fortunately, no one else was hurt. "time" magazine is giving us a preview of its candidates for its person of the year. the names were revealed this morning on the "today" show. the short list includes colin kaepernick for sparking protests

krystal? >> quite a few changes are coming and it will really make it feel like we are in december. we're tracking rain that's going to move in starting tomorrow. it will last through early wednesday morning. but i think what's even more important is what happens after that rain. much colder conditions. temperatures are going to fall starting from wednesday morning to wednesday afternoon. you'll have a notable difference in how much cooler it gets because the cold air behind the front will filter in and it sticks. so the next chance of precipitation over the weekend could also mean some first flakes across the region because temperatures will be so much koeldser. radar and satellite, clouds fill the area. sprinkles are ahead of the mainline of showers and storms still well to our west. it's all moving our way. by tomorrow, especially in the afternoon and evening, we're certainly going to have a nice, steady flow of rain moving across the area. temperatures currently, starting to fall a bit. many of us in the mid-upper 40s

and 50s in philadelphia. 47 in allentown and dover at 46 degrees. let's talk about these temperatures as we go throughout the next several hours. we go to about 10:00 tonight and low 40s north. mid-40s as we go farther south and clouds still in place. now we're to tuesday morning. 7:30 a.m. here and you can see the sprinkles of green on the board. they are going to be isolated light showers that start ahead as we crash on wednesday. we talk about that coming up. >> all right, krystal. let's find out when that rain moves through your neighborhood. you can have updates on your first alert forecast. republican senators are back at work on the tax bill passed last week. >> lauren mayk spoke with pat toomey. you asked him about the controversial item that almost

made it in the bill. >> reporter: it could have benefited the college alumni as well as the education secretary. i asked him about that as he heads back for work on the next phase as taxpayers try to sort out what it means for them. >> it doesn't look like folks in my income bracket will get the break. >> reporter: hope for things like increased standard deduction. >> it would help us in our case. >> reporter: senator pat toomey played a key role in getting the senate bill passed. and in philadelphia, he pitched the benefit to taxpayers and businesses that have seen a rate cut. >> it's a glaring outlier that makes the u.s. much less competitive. we want to win and do business

that we are losing out on today. >> reporter: it's the first time that we're hearing from him since the early-morning passage of the senate bill. nar toomey proposed an amendment criticized for how it could have benefited a small michigan college. why did you want to add that and would it have benefited pennsylvania residents? >> yeah. so this provision was wildly mischaracterized. i'm glad you brought it up. >> reporter: toomey said if they didn't take federal funding for student aid and among the schools that chose to do that. >> i believe colleges that chose to forego this money ought not to be hit with this tax. >> reporter: that amendment failed but toomey says he will revisit it. for now, he's heading back to washington for the next step in getting the tax plan to the president's desk. the house and senate have come

up with a plan that both chambers can agree on and as for that college endowment plan, he spoke to people both in and out of the state about it. a spokesman later told me that betsy devos was not among them. jim? >> lauren, thank you. new jersey's long attempt to open up sports betting could pay off today. during arguments in front of the supreme court, several justices have said that they would be in favor of dispelling of the law that would ban it. all major professional sports leagues in the u.s. are against changes to the law but courts expected to rule in june. if you're thinking about giving the gift of a lottery ticket, officials want to remind you to use good judgment. it should not be given to children. it's not against the law to gift them but lottery officials say research suggests it is not always a good idea. now here's a look at other stories making headlines county-by-county across our

region. in camden county, a man is charged after a shootout with a metro police officer. sir lawrence shirah is charged with unlawful use of a weapon around 4:00 yesterday morning. police found ross and expired gunfire. no officers were injured. in north hampton county, medical records were found in a recycling center. it had social security information and medical history information like hiv and cancer. the discovery was made over the summer. a spokesperson tells nbc 10 that the files have since then been properly discarded. two people in allentown are charged in a forgery ring that is said to have span five counties. they used $20 counterfeit bills

to purchase debit cards across the area. in lehigh valley, a man is recovering from a hunting accident. the 30-year-old was deer hunting on saturday when a bullet fired by another hunter ricocheted and hit him in the face. the hunter should be okay and no one is facing any charges. this next story is a good reminder for you to read the fine lines before you buy. the one thing that made it difficult for her to get her money back. what you need to know so it doesn't happen to you. and watch out, where this deer was caught roaming around in our area. nbc 10 pays it forward with a holiday classic. >> a camden county high school

promenade at cape may and here's the view at center street at 30th street station. tens of thousands of people will be passing through this area during the holiday season. >> first alert meteorologist krystal klei is back. >> you need to have the umbrella and rain boots. you need the weather gear out because we have a little bit of everything in this forecast and the cold is going to be the most notable. we need a catalyst to bring these changes and it's right about here. that's the cold front moving in our direction and it's right now triggering severe weather warnings over parts of the midwest. they continue to move in our direction as we go through tonight and into tomorrow. by tomorrow, we don't expect

severe weather in our neck of the woods but we get rain. rain is possible, too. currently, we have the gray overlay that you see and ahead are sprinkles. that could also be spotty showers. one of the biggest things is going to be what happens a ever the rain. that's what is currently happening. look at this difference. we're in the 50s. and then boom, 18 degrees right now. that's the cold air that is moving our way and so first tomorrow we have the 60s and then wednesday you'll feel the effects. the blue is showing us temperatures that are causing the cold front itself. by wednesday, it's on the approach over us. we'll start to see the temperatures tumble and then

here we go as we move into thursday. this is what you can expect. we have a big change in our weather pattern. the rain is first, falling temperatures on wednesday and then throughout the rest of our ten day, much colder conditions both at night and in the afternoon. lows will be in the 20s. possibly teens for some of us. and we're looking at weekend snow possible as well. we'll go through the hour by hour. you can note the difference. it's a big one. we've been spoiled, honestly, for a while. we're starting with tomorrow morning and you can see isolated showers. temperatures in the upper 40s and a mild morning, you won't need a big jacket tomorrow. mid- and upper 50s by 2:30 in the afternoon. you can see the steadier rain with the cold front moving in. that's going to spread across the map as we go into tomorrow night. this is 9:00. also notice, look at those temperatures. it's not falling at all.

you have this really strong south flow and it's pumping in warm air and it's going to keep up the mild conditions as the rain comes down. and then the rain starts to thin overnight into wednesday morning. watch these temperatures change. from 3:po 30 in the morning, lo at that, it's 8:00 a.m. this is typically when you'd see your low temperature of the day but really we are looking at numbers that may keep falling as we go through the morning hours. we're drying out and staying in the low to mid-40s at best the rest of the day and these numbers are better than the days to come. this is going to be a very big pattern change for us. on top of that, the winds will be an issue. so tuesday, as we get into the afternoon hours, about 25-per-mile-hour gusts. that's going to make it windy rain that we deal with. as we go into wednesday, now we have 25 to 35-mile-per-hour

company reimbursed her her $300, the accounting department billed her for finance charges and delivery fees. >> i said this is not right. everything should be closed. >> reporter: warren called the company but for five months the bills kept coming. in fact, the bills were $170 were sent to a collection agency. >> i thought maybe channel 10 would help me out with this. >> reporter: we contacted mattress firm. they said, "we were swift to reach out to miss warren upon being contacted by nbc 10 to provide her with assistance. it paid the $170 bill to the collection agency." >> i'm so grateful for you guys. >> reporter: warren says she's still shopping to find that perfect mattress so hopefully she can get a good night's sleep soon. just imagine, here's the thing. you take it and send it back right away and you're not supposed to get those charges. if you take delivery, you'll be

lauren. >> the ban can go into effect even while challenges continue to be heard in lower federal courts. restrictions can now be placed on citizens from those eight nations, six of which are majority muslims. two federal judges blocked the latest version of the ban in october but those rulings are now set aside. now, you may remember, there had been different versions of this ban. this is the third attempt by the trump administration. it was rewritten after furious protests and legal challenges broke out over previous versions during the early months of 2017. this version of the ban allows travel restrictions on citizens from those eight targeted countries, even if they do have personal relationships with someone in america. live in the breaking news center, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. our coverage of this breaking news on the travel ban continues on "nbc nightly news" with lester holt at 6:30 right after this
