incredible story. >> he was in combat on the battlefield when he made a new friend of the four-legged variety. little did ether of them know that that encounter would change both of their lives forever. he looks like any other happy-go-lucky dog. enjoying rides in the car, wind in his fur, and chasing sticks too big for his own good. but just a few years ago, this was fred in afghanistan. in 2010 sergeant craig grosse was gathering jell intense for the elite fighters of the corps. >> they told us that it would be a different kind of fight. that the taliban there had more experience and more to fight for, in terms of that area. >> reporter: craig and his fellow marines were constantly attacked. >> be walking through a little village. you turn a corner and they would be waiting for you. >> reporter: then one day, between mortar attacks, craig spotted a plucky little dog, with as he described, a big,

goofy head and short legs. frolicking all alone, without a care in the world. as i got closer he wagged his tail. that's the last thing i expected this dog to do. >> reporter: this stray dog not only followed craig back to his compound, he followed him everywhere everywhere. even on covert night paroles. he figured out, these guys are quiet. i'm going to be quiet. when other stray dogs little packs around they would bark at us. fred wouldn't bark back. that was incredible. >> reporter: a fellow marine said looks like you have a friend. he said looks like a fred. the marines had a no dogs policy in afghanistan. get caught with a stray and that dog would be euthanized no questions asked. but craig said there was something different about this dog. i'm not the one that felt that way. everybody with me in the field could see it. we knew tluz somehere's some rules

meant to be broken. >> the afghan commandos didn't appreciate a dog living in their compound. one day, it got so tense, a gun battle almost erupted over fred. >> he is always creating drama. >> reporter: craig realized when he left he wasn't going alone. he smuggled fred in camp leather leatherneck in his beautiful bag. fred frenchly made it ohm to craig in the u.s. >> i never heard a dog gasp. that's what he did. he was going crazy and licking my face. that was a special moment. >> reporter: being reunited with fred was the great part of coming home for craig. other parts were tougher. while in afghanistan, he not only suffered a traumatic brain injury he watched as one of his closest friends, gunner sergeant justin was killed by an ied. when he came home he knew he

might be suffering from posttraumatic stress. suffering from hypervigilance and nightmares. he didn't know how to talk about it. fred gave him a place to start. >> what kind of dog is that because he's so different looking and handsome. it was. it was an opportunity for me to talk about afghanistan. >> reporter: craig lives outside of portland maine, with his girlfriend nora and her dog, ruby. and travels the country with fred connecting with others impacted by posttraumatic stress. >> it's an important story. the more i share, hopefully people share theirs. >> reporter: by getting him out of afghanistan, craig saved fred's life. but craig will tell you, fred is doing just as much to save his life right back. >> oh big-time. he's still saving me. there's ways he impacted my life that i'm figuring out. >> reporter: maine has a motto, the way life should be. and for craig and fred very possibly the way life was meant

with you. channel 108. the world knows naomi judd as a grammy-winning country music star. but behind the scenes she faced a battle with depression. and naomi is detailing those struggles in her new book "river of time." naomi, good morning. it's good to see you. >> thank you for doing this. some mornings you wake up and there's a big, juicy pimple on your nose. i woke up this morning and i have no choice. ♪ take another little piece of my heart now baby ♪ >> naomi, you have found your voice in this book. and you are really talking about some difficult years when you fell into a depression. before we get into it what made you want to write? what made you want to be so public and spill it out? >> savannah i'm trying to start a national conversation about depression and anxiety because i

may be one little country singer right here. but there are 43 million of us out there. 43 million, who suffer from depression anxiety. and i want to let the world know that it's not a character flaw. it's a disease, just like you have a disease of the heart. heart disease. or you have cancer which is wherever cancer of the lungs. and the pancreas if the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin, you have to inject insulin into the body to get rid of sugar. they don't make enough of the good neurochemicals in the brain. we don't make enough of the good chemicals in the brain. it's a disease. it is not -- it has nothing to do with our character. >> and as you write in the book it kind of seemed to come out of nowhere, in 2011. as i understand you had finished up your tour with wynonna. and suddenly one day, you woke up and everything changed.

what happened? >> it happens with a lot of people. sometimes people don't realize, they have depression. if you go to my book, it's like a survivor's manual how to survive depression and anxiety. but i realized i wasn't just sadness, like if you have the loss of someone, the loss of a pet, the loss of a job, whatever. you can go into a temporary depression. but this lasted forever. i didn't get off my couch for two years. >> you were afraid? >> well, i was so depressed that i couldn't move. i wouldn't even brush my teeth. i couldn't get out of my pjs. my husband and my girlfriends, of course would come over. and i would just go upstairs and lock the door in my bedroom. or they would come to the driveway and i would lock the door and look at them. you become immobilized. and my psychiatrist i finally listened to ashley and wynonna and larry, my husband, and

realized i needed professional help. i was dangerously depressed. >> you talk in the book about thinking about, wanting, to commit suicide. >> yep. that's how bad it can get. you get down in this -- it's hard to describe because you get down in this deep dark hole of depression and you really don't think there's another minute. it's so horrific. you can't even think about another day. but i got so bad, that finally, larry actually called 911 in the middle of the night and they took me in. and that's when all of the therapy started. one of the things that happens with depression is throughout our life -- and i've had a lot of tragedies. and i talk about that in the book. but you just keep squelching it down. and if you don't deal with it it starts coming out sideways. >> and the book really chronicles the genesis of this

are you cutting carbs? what are you doing? >> it's being more thoughtful how much you eat, when you eat it what time of the day. i have a few rules that i follow. i don't eat late at night after dinner anymore. >> you're over. >> and i eat about 25% of what i used to eat, in terms of portion control. and really helps. you still want to eat good food that has flavor. >> what are you making? >> we're going to make a skirt steak dish. and skirt steak is a good beef to use. it's better for you than a bigger cut. has less fat but is very beefy. and it costs a little bit less. but it's delicious. we're going to make a tomato relish. think about it this way, hoda. it is all of the ingredients of a bloody mary without the vodka. >> we're going to start with the

dressing. lemon juice. red wine vinegar, worcestershire. and a little bit of celery. a lot of times we throw out the leaves. save them. they have a fantastic flavor. it gives it a nice brightness. we're going to chop up the celery leaves here. and put in some of the ingredients. this time of the year, cherry tomatoes are nice and tweet. red onions and hol pain owejalapenos. we have our spices here. you can use your favorite spice rub. spices will bring lots of flavor without bringing extra fat. >> when it's raw, you rub that stuff on? >> yes. let it sit for 30 minutes. this is the skirt steak. >> look at that. >> this is what you want to see. see how nice and crusty that is? the space will create flavor and
