river rescue tonight at 11 the quick action by witnesses to save this driver. a growing danger out west. wild fires now devouring thousands of acres and forcing tens of thousands to leave everything behind. look out a holiday stunt turns into a close call. beach goers look on in horror. we start with a scued from the river. nbc10 cameras were there as police pulled this damaged car out of the. good evening i'm jim rosenfield. that car plunged right into the cold river tonight prompting nearby rowers to rush into save her. nbc10 brn hud is live where it happened in fair mount park. you spoke with a good samaritan who helped pull the woman to

safety. >> this group of rowers was in the right place at the right time. they saw headlights in the water. one dove in and open pd the door and saved this 61 year-old woman inside. >> reporter: with little light and a lot of rain. a crew fished this car out of the river. police said no one saw the 61 year-old woman drive into the water. but rowers were there to help save her. >> i heard some people yelling or screaming or something. nobody knows what that was or where it came from. >> reporter: shawn is the coach with the rowing association. he was in a motorized boat. and two row rs saw the car in the river. one of his rowers dove in to pull the woman out. >> he jumped backhe managed to find her arm. and pull her out. >> i got her offoat. and at that point she was not

speaking. >> reporter: paramedics arrived helping pull the driver out of the water. they gave the woman cpr and took her to the hospital. where she's in stable condition. >> we're tharngful for the rowers who went into the water and rescued this individual. >> reporter: philadelphia police detectives say the car backed into the water. the question, was this done on purpose? as for shawn, this experience was a first. >> i can guarantee nobody in our group has had to handle a c wat. >> while shawn hall says no one from the group experienced a situation like this before, a rower saved a driver in the river five years ago. also from their club. live in fair mount park. i'm brandon hudson. >> tracking soaker continued tonight with more rain pounding our region. here's a look at the first alert weather. rain soaked streets tonight in ce a live look down broad street.

talking 30s. we'll talk about the snow when i come back. police are looking for a driver who hit a 14 year-old girl in cob creek. and just kept going. the teen was in the krosds walk at 63rd and market. hit by a black 4 door lexus heading north. it happened around 6 tonight. the girl is in stable condition. a man is apologizing for taking a disabled girls walker and selling it for scrap money. donald kale and his friend were caught on this surveillance video taking the walker. from a front yard. the men went to the home and apologized to the family after seeing themselves on tv. kale says he thought the walker was trash. and never would have taken it. >> if we knew it was usable. we wouldn't have touched it. or nothing like that. period. we didn't mean to bother you people or nothing loik that. we're sorry. we're sorry.

>> police say he was shot in the chest through his back door and never had a chance. >> i was really shocked. it's like it's no safety i guess. it's really dangerous. >> reporter: neighbors believe the shooter ran through the hopes to make a get away. police are locking for the gunman tonight. >> southern california is up in flames. this wild fire has scorched more than 50,000 acres kp thousands of structures remain at risk. in just 24 hours the thomas fire has swept across the county. nearly 30,000 residents were evacuated from the homes last night. authorities say a lack of rain over three months created the dry conditions. and the winds are fuelling the fire. at least 150 structures have been damaged or destroyed. everything.
