come, are our nbc 10 first alert meteorologists who are getting you prepared. >> let's begin our team coverage with tammie souza, tracking the timing and the impact. >> we have a first alert in effect for this storm system. it was actually formed deep in the heart of texas, even in northern mexico. this sogoiis going to affect th pennsylvania suburbs, new jersey and delaware. that is from midnight to tonight through tomorrow. i have to tell you, we could see some lingering into sunday morning. light flurries could still continue. we're starting to see the impacts in far southern delaware and south jersey. the main impact will be midnight tonight. we'll see slippery travel out there. the snow will be on the roads, it's a slushy wet snow. and there will be some icing as well. we'll see anywhere from two to four inches in philadelphia and the suburbs. four to six inches in south

jersey and delaware. some models have pockets of snow in delaware higher than that. you can see some of the rain changing over to snow down into parts of kent county. what we're watching is this giant storm system, again, it's very elongated. it's going to take a while to get here. it will be here throughout the day tomorrow as it approaches our area. watch the temperature profiles, you can see the temperatures still too warm to support all snow in many places. we're seeing that changeover in south delaware and new jersey. then as temperatures falls, you see by tomorrow morning it's up into philadelphia and on up into the lehigh valley and the poconos. steve is going to walk you through some of those snow totals. we'll start in south jersey with a closeup look at the neighborhoods is. >> that's right. we do have some snow falling, very light levels right now. our own ted greenburg saying light flurries occurring there.

the snow will start in south jersey and delaware and will last the longest. as we go through and cagive you a tighter examination here, you can see along the garden state parkway, atlantic city expressway you're seeing the snow now. you can see how the snow is progressing from south to north. so by early tomorrow morning, most areas in south jersey are seeing snow. waking up at 5:00 a.m., half an inch to an inch of snow on the ground. as we work you through the day. you'll see one to two inches by 11:00 in the morning and wrapping up the storm four to six inches of snow. we'll have a full picture coming up in just a bit. >> taking a live look at the m camden waterfront. ted greenburg is live.

>> road crews are definitely getting ready where you are. >> reporter: the new jersey d.o.t. actually started pretreating roads in this region a couple days ago. now they're out state-wide getting ready for the snow. some folks already seeing it. the season's first flakes flying this afternoon in margate a small taste of what's to come. johnny carter and dave farmer making money today in summers point raking leaves. this weekend they want to have shovels in their hands. >> we're hoping it snow tomorrow so we can get out here and make some money. >> it's for making money for christmas. it's a good thing. >> reporter: sea isle city public works trucks getting loaded up with salt. >> it's here, coming, nothing you can do about it. >> reporter: cape may county road department facing the storm with a big supply. >> we had a quiet season last year. you can see the salt barn is still full from last season,

which saves us a lot of money and the other towns money going into this year. >> reporter: for these guys, it's all about raking in some cash, however they can s. >> please snow. i don't care it can rain bricks right now. you know what i'm saying? i'm out here in it. >> reporter: ready to keep working this weekend. the storm has prompted the big events here in the shore region, to be postponed. working on that part of the story for you at 5:00. i'm ted greenbuerg nbc 10 news. let's take a live look down broad street. traffic, you can see looking and moving pretty normal for a friday afternoon. that could change for anyone heading into the city tomorrow. nbc 10's rosemary connors just got an update from the street department. >> she joins us live from southwest philly. >> reporter: this is the largest salt dome in the city of philadelphia. it houses about 18,000 tons of

salt. throughout the city there are about 50,000 tons. plenty on hand for the snow that's coming tomorrow. the goal is to get the crews out in the morning to make sure that they can salt the roads as the first flakes start falling so that people are driving safely. while crews get ready for the first snowfall of the season, loading up salt to make sure the roads aren't slick, a different kind of preparation is also happening in philadelphia. a pep rally in center city drew tens of thousands of army/navy fans in town to watch the rivalry unfold. >> we're opponents and love the other teams, but not as much as us. >> reporter: did you pack enough wet weather? >> we're prepared. >> reporter: it will be a first for this family. >> it will different for me

that's where you'll get interactive radar and the hour by hour forecast right on your smartphone. 20 minutes of non-stop news continues now with a philadelphia police officer hit by stray bullet during a dog attack. >> police say another officer fired at the aggressive animal, but the bullet ricochetted. aundrea cline-thomas is live at temple hospital in north philadelphia where the officer is being treated. >> reporter: that officer is fine and expected to be discharged today. the bigger concern is for the 80-year-old woman who was severely injured. police rush to temple university hospital, a 24-year-old officer from the 39th district is being treated here after being struck by a bullet. >> a young guy, walked in the room it reminded me of my son, my son's age. i was kind of emotional for me. and thankfully he's okay. >> reporter: around 12:30 police responded to a call about a dog viciously attacking a woman at

this home. according to police an officer fired two or three shots killing the dog. one bullet ricochetted striking another officer in the shin. >> they did what they had to do to try to save this lady. >> reporter: an 80-year-old woman was rushed to temple with severe dog bites to both her legs. back at her home police continue to investigate what happened. officers do not know if the dog belonged to the woman. they say it was not a stray and possibly lived here. >> we're worried about the citizen who was torn up pretty badly by this dog. and i think our officers saved her life and hopefully she can hang on. >> reporter: again, it's a very severe situation for that 80-year-old woman. as for the officer, we can tell you he is married for less than a year and he has baby on the way. a lot of relief today that the situation for him wasn't much worse. reporting live in north philadelphia, aundrea cline-thomas. nbc 10 news. attractor trailer hit a piece of debris causing a deadly crash on the pennsylvania

turnpike. sky force 10 flew over the crash around 11:00 this morning. the debris hit the truck and ended up flying over the medium and slamming into the windshield of that vehicle. the driver was killed. investigators are working to identify the truck. police have made an arrest in last month's hit and run that killed a teenage girl. southampton police say james howell admitted to crashing his pickup truck. the woman died the next day. howell allegedly stopped and helped move her to the side of the road and then took off. he says he panicked. police say howell was driving with suspended license. wind driven wildfire said continue to burn their way through parts of southern california, destroying homes and forcing many to flee. today, president trump issued a disaster declaration for the state. that allows fema officials to begin disaster relief efforts, including getting equipment and federal funds to the area. the fires are so massive they

can be seen from space. nasa released images of the fires taken from the international space station. that's about 250 miles above the earth. one family in the fires had just minutes to grab their most cherished belongings. >> the ash was so thick and the fires were huge. >> extreme weather we're facing and as a result we're seeing extreme fire behavior. >> 25 elite thoroughbred race horses died running for safety from the fires. workers called the scene total pandemonium. most of the 500 horses were cut loose. nbc 10's first alert weather tracking the first snow of the season. this is a live look at i-95 in wilmington from our blue rocks camera. busy weekend for people trying to get their holiday shopping done. that is why we're preparing you now ahead of the snow. nbc 10's george spencer is live. >> parts of delaware could see the most snow from this system, how are road crews getting prepared there?

>> reporter: for del dot this is unwinding backwards. as most of us are sleeping at night their work will be ramping up. it is either a nice start to the snow season, or an aggravating nuisance, reminding you of what's ahead. at del dot's yard just off interstate 95, these are the sounds of the season. road salt loading onto just one of the state's 450 pieces of snow removal equipment. further north outside a grocery store in claymont we foundatous downing on a last minute shopping trip ahead of the first flakes. >> the reason why i'm shopping is because of the snow and traffic. people are crazy. >> with the first expected snow upon us, del dot is in full preparation. >> reporter: he tells us today offered a chance to get ahead

for his team as well. crews are brining all the major roadways. dropping this white stripe of salt mixture intended to prevent icing. because del dot is responsible for 90% of the state's roadways, crews have their work cut out for them, ahead of a storm that's expected to impact delaware and south jersey the most. >> we'll have crews on standby around the clock, out salting and if necessary plowing as well to keep the roadway clear through the major artery of the northea northeast. >> reporter: this shed contains a portion of the 45,000 tons of road salt on hand for the winter season now upon us. >> it's going to be really cold. >> reporter: are you ready for it? >> pretty ready. trying to be. >> reporter: for the lucky ones who don't have to work tomorrow, a saturday snowfall may be the sweetest winter treat they could ask for. >> definitely enjoying the company of others in the midst of the cold weather.

radar showing where the storm is coming from, from the south headed in our direction bringing that snow. >> tammie souza is with us, you have been following this for days now. and it's just about here. >> we've been tracking this on the forecast models for about ten days, talking about it. the track was not really clear by all the models until late last night. here's what to expect. with this storm, we're going to see wet heavy show. be careful shoveling. and you will be shoveling in parts of delaware and new jersey, maybe even parts of philadelphia. you could see several inches of snow. it's going to be wet and heavy. the roads will be slippery, starting late tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. this is going to be a long, long event. please be careful when you're out and about. and then the roads are going to turn icy after dark, because the temperature will drop below freezing. any of that snow that even melts or it's slushy, it will turn into black ice on the roadways. again, this is going to be all day tomorrow, in fact, it's already underway right now for all of you in parts of sussex

county, you see that, and delaware. also toward cape may, we've had reports of some light snow beginning to fall. we're seeing that transition from rain to snow on the doppler radar. here's a wider picture. you can see where you see the rain is closer to the coastline, inland, we have nothing but snow that is falling. this extends all the way back into the deep south. they're getting snow in mississippi, alabama, georgia, all the way through the carolinas. that, again, is going to take about 12 to 18 hours to make its way out of our area. let's walk you through, we have several different computer models. i'm going to take you through our rapid precision model. that's our in-house model. they have come into agreement. this is what i like for the timing. we're seeing a little bit of mix and light snow falling in southern delaware, rehobeth beach, you'll see a bit of a mix. by 9:00 it hasn't lifted too far to the north. cape may, snowshowers, dover, maybe you're starting to see

snowshowers. it's kind of coming in on an angle. millville, you'll be looking at snowshowers. atlantic city the same thing. now it starts to move northward. 7:00 in the morning, overhead in philadelphia, maybe the southern pennsylvania suburbs, and all of new jersey, we are going to see snow beginning to fall. these darker shades, that's where the heavier snow will be. watch as it lifts to the north, the darkest shades still are going to be across new jersey. by noon tomorrow, it's all the way up into the poconos, you notice the pink line right loin along the coastline. it may change back over to sort of a sleet or a mix of a rain and a snow. because the atlantic city ocean, of course, is just so warm. but look at the temperature profile. it is at or below freezing, 5:00 we're still in the snow. it's starting to taper off by 10:00 tomorrow night. temperatures well below freezing. that's why we have concerns for the roadways out there early

tomorrow morning and late tomorrow night. this is our rapid precision forecast model. it's saying we could see three to four inches across the area. i can buy that. it will pack down into wet sloppy snow. this is the north american model. it's hammering you with nine inches in rehobeth beach, five in philadelphia, three at mount pocono. that may be a little bit excessive. part of that is simply because this is a wet, heavy snow. this is not one of those fluffy snows. we'll see it transitioning from rain into snow and in some places back to rain. so our high tomorrow is going to be right around 34. we'll see that snow all day tomorrow, but it is going to hover close to freezing. yes, you can get snow above freezing. we're clear on sunday. look at monday, we could see a flurry, but clouds move in. our next chance of snow will be tuesday into wednesday. and we have another shot of snow as we head into next weekend. >> wow. >> definitely be careful on the roads. you've got black ice, slippery conditions. >> and a busy weekend for people. typically we get two inches

wilmington on the left, and in avalon, cape may county on the right. we have spotted a few flakes, but nothing major right now. the same system headed our way has already dumped unexpected snow across the south. look at this picture, children in jackson, mississippi, it never snows in mississippi. they couldn't wait to get outside and build a snowman. this part of mississippi picked up more than an inch and a half. certainly we know the weather could impact the plans for many people this weekend. >> yeah, that's why we've issued a first alert to get you ready. our team of meteorologists has been keeping a close eye on this system. and changes to the timing, steve is breaking down the potential snow totals neighborhood by neighborhood. >> let's begin with chief meteorologist tammie souza with more on the time ing with the storm. >> the storm is already here for some people in south delaware and far south jersey like cape may. this is a first alert that we have issued that is going to include the pennsylvania suburbs, philadelphia, all of south jersey and delaware. so we're all going to see snow.

you'll see snow in the lehigh valley and berks county. this is basically going to be the timeframe when we see the steadiest snowfall. that's midnight tonight through 8:00 tomorrow tonight. it's started in south delaware and south jersey. and we're pretty much going to be looking at slippery travel from tonight all the way through tomorrow night. anywhere from two to four inches in philly and the suburbs, four to six in south jersey and delaware. there could be pockets of higher amounts, special inland. we're seeing that changeover, but the atmosphere is very dry. it's slow to get to the ground. we're seeing that changeover for sussex county into parts of kent county, also taking a look at what's going on in cape may county. the system is making its way northward. headed northeast, and so the bulk of it is not going to be to us until early tomorrow morning. it stretches all the way back down into the deep south. let's kind of give you an idea of what we're looking at. watch this, the temperatures are still above freezing, but look at this.

at 9:30 it's still in south jersey and delaware at 2:00 a.m. it's still in south jersey and delaware. temperatures fall and this starts to climb across the area. we're going to discuss that and go hour by hour. right now steve is going to break it down and show you what's going to happen in delaware. >> it depends on where you are. the storm has arrived in areas like bethany beach where it's snowing lightly right now. in northern delaware it's still dry. again, depending where you are, further to the south that's where we're seeing the steadiest of the light snow. we're seeing that around rehobeth beach down to lewis. as we work through the evening hours, you can see the snow progressing up to the north. it doesn't make much progress through the early morning hours tomorrow. but then thereafter, you can see the snow accumulations increasing, up to about almost an inch in dover by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. four inches down in georgetown. as we head through the afternoon hours, that snow continues to fall. there will be a little bit of a mix down towards the coast.

which will cut down amounts just a little bit. as you can see, four to six inches across most of northern delaware. tammie will have a full update coming up in just a bit. the snow may create a winter wonderland across the area. local stores selling krimchrist trees say this isn't good. >> reporter: it looks all cozy right now here by the fire at lafayette hill where there are 2,200 trees right now on the lot. the problem is that dusting of snow or that inch or two they may get during this time of year, it does create a little bit cextra work for them. >> i don't go out on the weekends if i can avoid it. i like to go out during the week. >> reporter: getting it all done? >> yes getting it all done now. >> reporter: for some avoiding the crowds is key. but the threat of a snowy saturday. >> i'm going to florida in three hours.

holiday wishes come true for a little girl and her family. >> they picked matty o'malley who is battling leukemia for their project. the flyers gave her black and orange goodies. their new home is scheduled to be unveiled on valentine's day with a block party featuring players and coaches. the phillys are doing their part to spread holiday cheer. they visited our brother's place, which is one of the largest homeless shelters in philadelphia. the team's front office donated food and served dinner to 200 people there. the emergency shelter provides about three meals a day and treatment programs to 150 people. nbc 10's first alert weather tracking the first snow of the season. taking a live look from our cape may couamera. >> you can't miss those flakes coming down in parts of south jersey and the jersey shore could see some of the most snow

in this seem. this might be a picture from cape may county, new jersey as well. tammie souza is tracking the storm and its path as we speak. >> you see the big chips, almost like giant potato chip flakes. this is a wet heavy snow and so they're all sticking together and they look large coming down. you notice the gray sky, you see it across philadelphia. i call it snow skies. when the clouds almost look like a different color of gray and they're saturated and ready to start dumping snow. we will see it here in philadelphia. but not until very early tomorrow morning. what we're watching rights now is cape may and southern delaware. that's where we've seen the changeover from rain to snow. all of you in lewis, bethany beach, rehobeth beach, you're likely seeing those big flakes of snow coming down. we just saw them in cape may, wildwood getting reports of it . avalon, ocean city, probably the snow falling there.

atlantic city making that transition over right now. and that's where we are going to see the initial snow. look at this system, it's moving off to the north and east. you can see it sort of bulges out as it's moving across parts of maryland and barely touching west virginia. the thickest part of this system that's going to arch through our area has yet to get here. it stretches all the way back into the deep south and this is going to be the track that it takes. let's time it out for you. the temperatures generally are above freezing right now. that's why we're not seeing a steady snow. watch what happens. we go from 4:30, we see the snow down there in delaware and south jersey and the jersey shore. 9:30 tonight it moves just a little bit further to the north. not too far. we get into about 2:30 in the morning. now we're up to millville, dover, you're seeing snow. not to wilmington yet. not quite yet. atlantic city, you're in the snow. not philadelphia, but look at the temperatures, the changes. tomorrow morning the freezing mark, the darker shade of bluish

white, that's when we start to see the snow coming down. we also see a little bit of a transition back to a rain/snow mix, with this pink line in south delaware. that's going to waver back and forth. now we get into noon, everybody is looking at snow across the area. and these are the amounts that we're going to be looking at. we have -- this is our rapid precision models. it says maybe four inches in philadelphia, maybe three to four in cape may, down towards rehobeth beach. those are areas that may see a transition back into a rain/snow mix. maybe two inches at mount pocono. let's check the north american models. five and a half inches for philadelphia, three in mount pocono. i think the truth lays somewhere in between both of those. and i think that several inches is not out of the question for the entire area, there will be a lot of heavy wet snow to shovel. we'll be dropping down to 35, 6:00 tomorrow morning you should see the snow falling in philadelphia. pennsylvania suburbs, 6:00
