dreyer live from studio 1 a. >> welcome to "today." thanks for joining us. i'm craig melvin. >> we are getting ready. >> snow's coming. >> sure is. >> winter is a few weeks ago but snow doesn't care. >> no. southern texas 7 inches of snow. it's wild. >> that snow of course our top story. already some impressive totals as the storm makes its way north. corpus christi texas, dylan was just talking about texas, 7 inches has already fallen on the ground. >> alabama has gotten 10 inches so far. highlands north carolina has more than a foot. 15 inches. and that could number rise. >> now that storm is moving up the east coast. the northeast preparing for anything between a dusting to a half foot of snow depending on where you are. dylan tracking all of it. going to get pretty bad in some places.

>> it is. and it's the first snow of the season. this is the first major snowstorm of the season. as you pointed out, it is going to be a big one. a 2,000 mile stretch blanketing areas where people aren't used to seeing much, if any, of the white stuff. people living in the south waking up to an unusual sight. snow. the winter storm began way south. this traffic jam was in mexico. texas was next to get hit. >> you hit that patch of ice and man, you're in a wreck. >> a 15-car pileup in san antonio. a record 5 inches of snow in college station. >> we have snow in houston. >> football star j.j. watt couldn't get enough of the unusual conditions. >> this is awesome. >> 180,000 customers initially lost power as record amounts of

snow fell in mississippi and louisiana. schools and businesses closed early in atlanta. delta canceled 625 flights at its hartsfield jackson hub. little early for us here in georgia, but, you know, we'll get through it. >> this morning the northeast bracing for the season's first snowstorm. but there's more than one way to look at the weather. >> i love the snow. especially around christmas. >> and it is still snowing in atlanta right now. areas back through texas, louisiana, alabama, mississippi, the snow is just about done there. we are going to see this develop into an eastern system and because of that we do have winter storm warnings up and down the east coast. 71 million people will still be impacted and also keep in mind even though the snow won't a accumulate on the roads because it's been so mild lately, we are still going to see dangerous conditions on the overpasses. they freeze on both sides. we are going to have to deal with this storm all day long. we are looking at as much as 2

to 4 inches in a wide stretch with isolated amounts closer to 6 inches especially along that rain/snow line. that would be right along the coast. eastern long island could see close to 6 inches of snow. it's like we haven't had any kind of taste of winter and all of a sudden we're feeling it 2,000 miles across the country. >> when you start talking about a few inches in carolina, that's enough to cripple major cities. now to a major story out west. those relentless wildfires showing no signs of letting up anytime soon. thousands of firefighters are working around the clock. some not taking a break since the wildfires began. some losing their own homes in the process. firefighters trying to take advantage of calm winds before they pick up once again today. and this morning the fires have turned deadly. kristen is in hard hit ventura. good morning. >> good morning, sheinelle.

take a look. hundreds of structures burned in this fire. one woman now confirmed killed. she was trying to flee. was in a car accident and was overcome by the fire. these fires in total have now burned over 260 square miles. here at the thomas fire the biggest one it is 10% contained thanks to light winds but i can already feel the winds picking up. firefighters know their window with help from mother nature is closing fast. overnight some progress on the ground. >> it's not as dire as it looked a few nights ago. however, there is a tremendous volume of fire out there. >> reporter: the life and death struggle far from over knowing the brutal santa ana winds will be back later today. almost 9,000 firefighters now battling on the front line. many have been working six days straight. evacuees still wondering what

they'll go home to. ? >> no sleep. worry. devastati devastating. our community is gone. >> people have been forced to leave their homes, some rescuing everything to make sure their animals made it out. >> seeing the horses in bad shape and seeing ranches with no animal system an erie feeling. >> jan carver relieved to see her house okay but feeling bad because her neighbors weren't so lucky. in the face of tragedy the gratitude is overwhelming. food, water and a wealth of thanks for firefighters working so hard. >> what we really appreciate is a grateful community who appreciates all the hard work that the men and women of the fire department up and down the state are putting in. a great meal is highly appreciated. >> reporter: every little blessing has extra meaning here.

eric allison lost his home but was able to save a priceless treasure. >> i pulled out a picture of my grandma, my beautiful, noble, wonderful grandma and took a picture of it and sent to my mom. i think she cried she was so happy i saved it. >> reporter: at least some small blessings. this fire now is moving through a national forest so a less populated area, but the winds expected to gust upwards of 50 miles an hour today. that could mean it could move it back into some areas where more homes and more people are threatened. >> kristen, thank you. to politics now and president trump giving his strongest endorsement yet for roy moore. the president speaking at a rally in pence cole la, florida, 20 miles from the alabama border and and packed with more supporters. gabe gutierrez is in montgomery alabama with more. good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. president trump may have held that rally just over the state line in florida, but there was

about the candidacy of roy moore. there are still some burdens. some voters on the conservative side say they can't come over the line. >> from twitter to rallies, president trump clearly all in on roy moore. how much do you think that is going to help him on tuesday? the president's support and how is trump's support playing outside alabama? >> it's an important factor. voters who i spoke with over the past four days say they may not love roy moore, but they believe in president trump's agenda. and to have that kind of full throated support from the president just a few miles from the state over in pensacola, that refs up the trump base just as doug jones is trying to rev up the democratic base this weekend. >> there's another piece. we talked about the fact that the early calls from top republicans for roy moore to dropout have quieted recently. in fact the republican national

committee is once again supporting moore. how do you think a roy moore win would affect the republican party? >> the republican party is now in washington a party of insiders but it's really controlled by outsiders like president trump. you saw in his speech in pensacola last night he was putting himself forward as someone who would rock washington, d.c. and he cast roy moore as an ally. so if roy moore comes to washington, he will be with president trump standing there perhaps against the republican establishment at times, but it is those outsiders in the gop who now have power. >> robert, thank you. president trump will be in mississippi later today. he'll be attending the opening of a new civil rights museum, but his visit is fraught with controversy before he even gets there. nbc kristen welker is in jackson mississippi. good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you. tensions are simmering here in jackson with president trump set to touch down in just a few hours for the opening of this

former fox news anchor jewsaid t president trump unexpected tried to kit her on the lips while the two were on an elevator back in 2005, 2006. she then quickly followed up saying she didn't see that incident as sexual assault while, quote, i was neither threatened or offended in elevator. end of story. we did reach out to the white house. no response yet. >> kristen there in mississippi. thank you. new details are coming out about the reason behind the resignation of trent franks. an aid saying he pressed her to act as a surrogate mother and at one offered a $5 million reward. he planned to resign in february but on friday he stepped down. the couples had twins through a surrogate eight years ago. dozens of people were hurt,

four of them seriously after a charter bus overturned on a fran highway. officials say the bus hit the center median wall and ricochetted crashing on the side of the interstate. the cause of that crash is not known just yet. according to authorities the driver was not impaired. 29 people were on board. more violence in the middle east. protestors took to the streets throwing rocks at israeli troops who used tear gas to stop them. angered by president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of isreal. pope francis is calling for a change in christianity's best known prayer. in a tv interview the pope said that the line in the lord's prayer asking god to, quote, lead us not into temptation is a poor translation. he says it implies that it is god who actively pushes people into temptation rather than satan. while the pop's remarks are not a decree to change the prayer, it has once again sparked a

debate on how far a pope can go on shaking up longstanding tradition. let's check in with dylan now. >> we are going to see the snow up and down the east coast. in areas where the snow has stopped back through texas, louisiana, mississippi, we are going to see very, very cold temperatures. in fact, we have freeze warnings with morning lows dropping down into the 20s and 30s. this is a hard freeze that will wipe out the rest of the growing season. that cold extending all the way down. we're also looking at the fire danger out west. wins will be on the gusty side. it is sunny and somewhat warm down across weste texas withrn good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley. snow starting to spread in the area. the first alert for the first snow is for the entire area. during the day today through this afternoon and through this evening. and until late tonight at midnight the snow will finally be moving out of the area. we will see slowly accumulating

good morning. i'm dray clark. your time now 7:26 on this saturday morning. we have issued a first alert for snow in the region happening throughout tonight, midnight. taking a live look at what's happening in cape may, actually this is -- yeah, cape may, new jersey, some snow there. that's actually -- what's that, bill? the pocono mountains, i thought that was the case there camelback making snow there definitely a place to be on a day like today. you can see snow on the ground in this new video from middle township. nbc10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg tells us the snow is now falling again in that area. let's get your most accurate forecast from nbc10 first alert meteorologist bill henley. >> they don't have to make snow in cape may because mother nature is handling that for them. and it is going to be in philadelphia.

the clouds are in place and the snow is making some progress. snow overnight in ocean city. you can see it on the boardwalk and some colder surfaces. warm air is just offshore and some has started to move inland so we're seeing a mix of rain moving into southern delaware and into cape may. now, this could limit the snowfall totals during the morning hours, but snow is expected to move back in and across the rest of the area too. we're seeing some light snow in central delaware and south jersey. and a few snowflakes in northern -- wilmington, northern delaware, as well as new castle county. as the morning progresses into the lunchtime hour snow spreads across the entire area and continues right on through this afternoon. dray ncht all right, thank you, bill. philadelphia's cold blue is now in effect. that's the designation when we get snow in sub freezing temperatures. the city's homeless outreach teams will be patrolling streets urging homeless people to make their way to shelters. i'm dray clark, we'll be back in another 25 minutes or so. now back to the "today" show.

good morning. i'm rosemary connors. it's just a few minutes before 8:00 on this saturday. we have issued a first alert for snow that will be spreading across our region through today and into the evening. let's take a live look right now at i-95 in wilmington. you can see traffic moving along just fine. dry here right now, snow is expected a little bit later on this morning. snow is already on the ground down the shore this is in rio grande, middle township, where you can see snow is already piling up on the lawns and trees. meteorologist krystal klei is keeping track of the timing of the snow for the other parts of our region that have yet to see it. >> yeah, rosemary, we're looking at first alert radar and satellite as we speak you can see snow is trying to start

into new england over the course of the day today as well. we do have winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings in effect up and down the east coast. 71 million people are impacted by this system. we are going to see the snow move into the mid atlantic region by late morning, early afternoon. the heaviest of the snow moves in overnight and early tomorrow morning. here's the timing as we go through the day today. norfolk virginia down into philadelphia, new york city up into rhode island and boston, that snow will continue to fall and be heavy at times and accumulate, especially on the grassy surfaces, although the roads will be very slick, especially when you factor in about 2 to 4 inches from virginia up into bangor maine. if you get stuck in some heavier bands we could see 5 to 6 inches of snow. i feel like we haven't had time to prepare to drive, so it's better to stay indoors and let

it all play out. another major story developing is out west. the major wildfires burn out of control. six fires in all keeping firefighters working around the clock. this morning officials say one woman has died. she was trying to get away from the flames. nbc kristen is in hard hit ventura with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning you to, craig. this is the scene across so much of southern california right now. in all, all of these six fires, 264 square miles have burned. almost 700 structures have been destroyed. many of them homes like this. now, as you mentioned, one woman confirmed dead. a 70-year-old. she was trying to evacuate. was in a car accident and then was overcome by the fire. some of those evacuations have been lifted now today as the fire burns into the national forest. people getting to come home to see what, if anything, is left of their homes. almost 25,000 structures are

alert because of the conditions across pennsylvania, delaware and new jersey including the jersey shore. this is a live look at conditions in ocean city right now. >> take a look at this video from the garden state parkway in middle township, cape may county. you can see there's snow on the trees and grass. looks like a winter wonderland, but the parkway just looks wet thanks to the crews treating the roads. >> and in delaware this is what it looks like in wilmington right now. not so bad. snow started falling in parts of the state yesterday and people there will get another dose later on today. >> now let's take a live look at philadelphia. the steady snow in the city and the suburbs still a few hours away. don't worry, it's coming. first alert meteorologist bill henley is tracking what's happening right now. bill. >> rosemary, the first alert is in effect for our first snow of the season. some have already seen some snow, but it's the entire area that's going to be impacted by this storm. it's happening now and will continue through this afternoon until midnight tonight.
