the first snow of the season from new jersey to pennsylvania to delaware. our entire area blanketed with inches of snow. but with the flakes moving out a new danger is setting in with colder temperatures. black ice, slippery roads and dangerous driving conditions. good evening. i'm denise nakano. we've extended our first alert into tomorrow morning because of widespread black ice, slippery roads and below freezing temperatures. take a look. our entire area was covered in inches of snow today. the shovels and scrapers were out from pennsylvania, new jersey, and to delaware. and here's a live look right now

across our entire area. the subfreezing temperatures are setting in and the road conditions will get worse with slick surfaces from all that snow. nbc 10's drew smith live in south jersey. and aundrea cline thomas tracking driving conditions in delaware. and steve sosna with what you can expect in your area. the snow is expected to clear out over the next hour. but see the mix of snow and cold is creating a new danger. >> that's right, denise. and that's why i've extended the fist alert through tomorrow morning. even though the snow will be ending in many of your neighborhoods shortly, it's the black ice that comes in here. and that will last about to 10:00 tomorrow morning. if you've already been outside you know it's pretty slippery on any untreated surface,

sidewalks. if you can wait until 10:00 tomorrow morning, the sunshine will help you because we will see some melting. and it will help improve conditions drastically. so the accumulating snow is over. the last vesages of it is over -- route 9, route 23 you're seeing a bit of it right now. coming up i'll break down the snow totals for you. we knowal southern delaware got hit hard. but there's one other section that had some impressive amounts and it may surprise you. coming up. one of the big concerns right now and heading into the morning are the road conditions. here's a look at i-95 in wilmington. andrea. >> reporter: there's a stark

contrast i want to show you. take a look here. you see the residential side roads have a coating of snow. but go onto the main road and you'll see coming up right here that it is completely clear. and it has residents taking the necessary precaution. even though it was still snowing, shehead had to make time to come out and clear her driveway. >> it'll be harder to get out. >> reporter: this wilmington area got 3 to 4 inches of snow. >> it'll freeze if we don't get it off. >> reporter: it's the second trip for him, but it's not the potential refreeze that's his concern. >> i actually have to leave tomorrow morning for a wedding. i have to get ready for that. >> reporter: on the main street, it was a different story. we saw trucks clearing the

accumulation and putting down salt. >> we live in the city of wilmington, and it got a little rough around the side streets, but other than that it wasn't too bad. >> reporter: drivers are taking precautions. >> just got to take your time. >> reporter: and it's just flurries out here right now. you see we don't have to have the windshield wipers on. but be reminded that bridges, they freeze before the roads. that's the concern as we go into overnight and the morning hours. reporting live, andrea cline thomas, nbc 10 news. and our live team coverage continue now in south jersey. drew. >> reporter: yeah, and there are still people out tonight even though it is still snowing here in camden county. it is very light. but if you look up at the light post here you can see there's

still a little bit of snow coming down. the street crews have been doing a good job of clearing the street and making sure there's plenty of salt down. but if you look at the christmas tree, that is where the snow is sticking. it looks very festive out here, and that's why we're hearing very few complaints about the first snowstorm of the season. santa sataking credit for the snow falling outside his window. the magic of christmas is an annual tradition in washington township at the old stone house village. >> just to see the kids come out and the smiles on their faces. and tonight with the snow it was just priceless. we were really worried, but it turned out great. >> reporter: did you think at all about canceling? >> never. i don't cancel events. my team and i were going strong all day long. >> reporter: some south jersey parades were called off today, but not this even as inches

watch out for slapry roads in new castle county. we've issued a first alert until tomorrow morning because of widespread black ice on streets and below freezing temperatures. storm force 10 has been outen the streets all night long to give you a better look of what you'll be dealing with. and in other news tonight delaware state police are still investigating after a teenager was killed by a state trooper in dover. a trooper pulled this car over around 3:00 this morning. three teenagers were inside, and troopers say a 16-year-old in the front passenger seat flashed a gun and then there was a shootout. the driver was hit in the leg, taken to the hospital and released. a 15-year-old in the back seat was not hit. the trooper also was not injured. next on nbc 10, billowing

police are releasing pictures of possible suspect in a smoke bombing inside a south jersey super market. the shop right in clemmenten was evacuated yesterday after heavy smoke started filling the store. the store was closed for about two hours. no one was hurt.

tonight the fbi is searching for this masked man they said robbed citizens bank in northeast philadelphia. investigators say he went throughout the bank last night with a rifle and a duffel bag and demanded cash. well, two people are dead after a small plane crashed into a backyard in san diego tonight. flames and smoke were shooting into the sky as firefighters moved quickly to get them out. there were four people inside the plane. two are dead and two were taken to the hospital. no one inside the house was hurt. coming home as super bowl champions. the north philly aztecs won the d1 title today in florida, shutting out the bull dogs 28-0. this was an emotional year for the team who dedicated its season to coach wain allen who dayed back in february. and your division champion,

finance field. the eagles don't have to worry about the snow tomorrow. they're in sunny los angeles to take on the ram. steve sosna joins wus the latest on the snow and what's next. >> several things to talk about. first is the widespread black ice. and that's why i've extended the first alert through 10:00 tomorrow morning. if you're out tonight and especially before sun rise just be very careful i your footing and also make sure you layoff the gas in your car. going too fast is not a great idea. once we get the sun up tomorrow temperatures will rebound to the upper 30s, and we'll see some meting conditions. but it's short-lived. there's a blast of arctic air coming in and temperatures are going to drop. we have the concern for black ice, 39 in philadelphia, 27 in allan town.

temperatures over night tonight into the teens northwest of the city and in and around the city. look at the swaths of snow this snow laid down. all the way down to the florida panhandle. yes, the florida panhandle has snow on the ground right now and even into crawfish country in southern louisiana. this is mainly in sussex county where we had these higher numbers. south jersey you got hit anywhere between 2 and 5 inches in robinsville, mount laurel. moons landing, 2 inches of snow as well. at the airport, 3.3 inch. and that is daily record. we've never seen much that snow in the state december 9th.

snowfall amounts most impressive northwestern montgomery county. 5.2 in coatsville. and holland and bux county 4 inches. and last but not least this is the overachiever. up in burkes and lee high counties we had snowfall totals nearly 8 inches. the moisture went a little bit more to the west. west allan town, 7.5 inches of snow. very impressive. and if you do not see your town, we're not excluding you. there's a lot of towns out the. we have them posted on nbc philadelphia.com and the nbc philadelphia app. we'll see some melting conditions heading into tomorrow. and that's good news because we'll need to clear off some of

from los angeles to escape the fires. he got his christmas gift, frolicking in the first snow of the season. i think a lot of people were like that. >> i remember my dog doing that for the first time, too. it's an excitement for them. okay, we have no more snow to go in terms of accumulation tonight. but tomorrow you're waking up to some black ice. there's a morning sprinkle and then a snow shower falls out. we're looking at a bitter blast by wednesday. 28 but feeling like the teens. but fido and go around and roll in the snow. >> snl is next. have a great night.
