now at 6:00, raging inferno and it's a firefighter's home that went up in flames. thrown from a truck. police search for two drivers, including one that then ran over and killed a woman. icy streets. the major roads are clear but the problem is side streets freezing over. nbc10 news starts now. right now at 6:00, the first snow of the season is sticking around. mostly on those side streets. nbc10 in allentown this afternoon where people had plenty of snow to shovel. parts of the lehigh valley saw the most snow, around 7 inches. and it's those side streets where we have to worry about that refreeze. this is what it looked like here, and even a little bit of snow can become a hazardous situation when it becomes icy.

the slopes are packed with skiers enjoying all that fresh powder. it's not too cold. a perfect night to ski. good evening on this sunday, i'm denise nakano. temperatures are about to drop and a refreeze on the roads is a big issue. let's go to first alert meteorologist steve sosna. >> after getting above freezing today and melts off some of the snow and the slush, we will go back below freezing tonight. but we hit our forecast high of 39 degrees here in philadelphia. 35 in pottstown, 37 in redding. so not all of the snow melted off today. and with that, we'll see a refreeze here tonight. now, temperatures it really depends where you are if you're going to see black ice at this moment. 26 in mount pocono where you could see some on the side streets. 33 in pots dowtstown, some area around there may see black ice.

we'll see some of that slush turning into a soft ice tonight. it won't be frigd and cold tonight like like that, but just enough to get some icy conditions on some of the roadways. you'll see that first in the suburbs and then into the city. slick, untreated surfaces. don't slam on your brakes in those kinds of conditions. i'll be back. i made some changes to the forecast on tuesday. >> now that we got our first taste of snow this season, make sure to download the nbc10 app. track the radar at your fingertips. with a possibility of' r. a refreeze watch nbc10 news today starting at 4:00 tomorrow to get weather and traffic updates. to the lehigh valley, a local firefighter's house went up in flames this morning and his home wasn't the only one. nbc10's drew smith is following the developing story from our breaking news center. >> reporter: that's right, denise. the firefighter who was just a couple of months from retirement

is one of the victims. this was also supposed to be a big day for him. >> all of a sudden i hear screaming and i know i wasn't dreaming. >> reporter: selena jolted from her bed this morning by what she heard but it was what she felt that was even more startling. >> the heat was just unbearable and we were just all so scared. >> reporter: she recorded this video of the flame as cross from her home on washington street in wilson borough. it all started in one half of a duplex and then spread to another home and then a business. >> i was here within four minutes of the call if not sooner. there were flames out past the sidewalk. >> reporter: both a man and a responding firefighter had burns to their hands. the fire so intense it melted siding and parts of this car. the man who lived here now with most of the roof missing is a firefighter himself. his name is charlie and his holiday plans for today are now cancelled. >> he was all set to play santa claus. he was going to be delivering

presents in the fire truck today. and, unfortunately, this is what he woke up to. >> reporter: the wilson borough community is planning to help that family get back on their feet. >> they give out candy for the kids. they're here for us. to have this happen to them, it's just devastating. >> the fire chief tells us this investigation is in the early stages. they are planning on interviewing a lot of people on that block. i'm drew smith, nbc10 news. >> drew, thank you. a woman is tossed out of a truck and run over. tonight, police have a clear cut description of the vehicles involved in the deadly hit-and-run in kensington. aundrea cline-thomas joins us live. you talked to people in the neighborhood. >> reporter: that's right. it all happened right here, denise, and neighbors in this area had a bird's eye view of this gruesome scene. it was a bright police lights right outside courtney's apartment building that woke her up in the middle of the night. >> i looked out the window and said, oh, my god, you know, she

was just out there. i'm like, what's going on? >> reporter: a woman was dead in the street. a witness told officers that she was shoved out of a moving ford f-see. a black dodge challenger behind the pickup allegedly ran over the woman who appeared to have suffered severe head trauma. >> i was shocked when they said it was a -- >> reporter: unidentified woman is believed to be 30 years old. >> this whole street is like, there is always something happening over here. >> reporter: now, before we go, i want to let you know about the cars police are looking for. again, silver ford f-150. they're also looking for a black dodge challenger. hopefully surveillance video in this area helps officers identify those drivers. reporting live in kensington, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc10 news. >> thank you, aundrea. california's governor says these deadly winter wildfires will likely burn all the way into

christmas. neighborhoods have been ravaged by a week-long wildfire, killing at least one person and destroying hundreds of homes and other buildings. >> it's been a terrible tragedy for so many people. so this is kind of the new normal. >> we're a strong community and we will come together. >> today, firefighters continue to battle the wildfires raging across more than 180,000 acres. the governor says this comes down to climate change and he's urging lawmakers to pay more attention to dealing with natural disasters such as fires, floods and earthquakes. a violent night in delaware county. a total of five people, some teenagers, were shot in three incidents in chester overnight. a 15 and 16-year-old were shot on west 12th street. both are expected to survive. two men were shot by someone in a moving car on west 3rd street. and finally a woman was shot in the back as she got out of her own car on brown street.

she's said to be in good condition. alabama senator is not voting down party lines during tuesday's election. senator richard shelby said he will not vote for gop nominee roy moore following multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. moore will face democrat doug jones in the special election. and the white house confirms president trump recorded a last minute robocall supporting roy moore. the recording was done yesterday and it's the president's most direct involvement in the alabama senate race. coming up next on nbc10 news, at 6:00, a ritual on the delaware river. but tonight, why there was no crossing at the washington crossing reenactment. dramatic finish. the boost a marathon winner got at just the right time.

today, pope francis' message was loud and clear, we need a world without nuclear arms and there is a need for measures to combat climate change. pope francis delivered his address in st. peter's square and the pontiff hopes people will realize the need to adopt truly efficient decisions to fight climate change. he mentioned people suffering from a cyclone in india and flooding in al bane yeah. in bethlehem, the line was out the door today. people packed inside to get their hands on some holiday treats as christmas creeps closer on the calender. for many, the holiday market is annual tradition. others picked today for their first trip. >> never actually been to this market. finally decided this year was the year to check out what's here and get in the christmas spirit. >> and if you're buy -- in the mood to buy gifts, it's easy to

send them right from the mart, the postal service set up its big blue box post office so you can get your gifts on their way. well, buffalo bills fans showed their loyalty in lake effect snow today. look at it coming down there. the field was blanketed with about 6 inches of snow. crews let out those snow blowers, but as you saw, it wasn't much help. we'll show you how this game ended coming up in sports. nothing like that yesterday, but some parts got 8 inches. >> 8 inches up in the lehigh valley, also down in delaware. we had our own white stuff here. >> that was pretty incredible for the first snow of the season. >> i saw a lot of happy faces about it. it happened on the weekend, on a saturday and we didn't have a commute to deal with the. the next commute, tomorrow morning, you may be dealing with black ice out there. that's the secondary side streets and sidewalks. once again, like this morning, you're going to be dealing with that in especially the northern and western neighborhoods here. as we go through tuesday,

tuesday's a changeable day. we start mild. maybe with a mix sky and a shower in the morning hours and then the day finishes off with a cold breeze, and by 11:59 tuesday night, the temperature may be around 21 or 22 degrees. a huge temperature drop there. that powerful one-on-one and cold will be around all day on one. so if you haven't found your winter attire just yet, you really will want to do so as we see plenty of cold here for the next couple of days after wednesday. let's take a look what's happening out there right now. temperatures in the lower to middle 30s to the west of the city right now. skies are partly cloudy to mostly clear right now. a mixed sky here in philadelphia. we haven't seen a whole lot of subfreezing temperatures just yet, but there are some, so just be careful from neighborhood-to-neighborhood, one street may be wet and the next might have black ice on it. chester county, 3 it degrees. 32 in coatsville. temperatures in the lower to mid-30s south of the

pennsylvania turnpike there. looks like just wet conditions. north of the p.a. turnpike, you may be dealing with black ice. 26 in mt. pocono, i've been watching the camera all day long and they're making and loving the snow. the conditions up there are excellent and will stay excellent this week. 37 in philadelphia. 35 in wilmington. you're refrigerated with the snow pack you have on the ground, 4 to 6 inches in many spots. a live look outside at the art museum. we had the christmas tree appropriately lit tonight here. it will feel like the holidays here for the next week or so. so what you need to know for the evening hours, the wind will die down. it's cold but it's not frigid tonight. and that's because of the wind dying off. temperatures will fall to around 30 degrees, but just enough to cause some of that black ice here for the morning kmout. let's break it down for your neighborhood. philadelphia, 7:00 tomorrow morning, 30 degrees, 39 by lunchtime and 40 by 4:00 in the afternoon. suburbs, you're a little colder

so, again, the widespread black ice, the problem there, 27 to start your day, 37 to finish your day. lehigh valley, much of the same. upper 30s by later on in the afternoon. the jersey shore and delaware, a little more in the way of sunshine with highs up around 40. by the way, if there are any school closings tomorrow, nunn at 4:00 a.m. or check the nbc10 app. we'll have that for any possible delays, especially up in the lehigh valley where they got the most snow. here is our next weather system moving up from the north and west. it will be crashing on down here and bringing that cold. and that cold will be here for several days once it arrives. so enjoy the briefly milder afternoon tomorrow at 41. 44 on tuesday with that mixed rain or snow shower. the cold blast on wednesday, you're really feeling it there. numbing with temperatures in the upper 20s feeling like the teens. lower 30s on thursday. a few flurries to the south and east. everybody gets in on the flurry action on friday.
