service at the senate level of this nation. >> reporter: since revealing in t"the washington post," debbie mixon said she thinks that president trump's endorsement is misguided. >> there's a man who is willing to sell his soul for political gain. >> reporter: gibson says she met moore when he spoke at her high school in 1981, when she was 17, over the age of consent in alabama. she says the then-34-year-old moore dated her for 2 1/2 months. but in hindsight -- >> it's not appropriate. it's just creeper. i did not have the ascension at the time. >> reporter: she does not allege he assaulted her. but she says moore lied when he said this. >> i do not know any of these women. >> reporter: she says this is his signature in her memory book. and he does know her. >> i would encourage people, however, to ask themselves, do

you want a man who lies now? >> reporter: moore's campaign later clarified, that he didn't know the women that accused him of sexual assault, including leigh corfman and beverly nelson. >> i did not date underage women. i did not molest anyone. >> reporter: president trump is stepping up support of the former judge with this robocall. >> this is president donald trump, and i need alabama to vote for roy moore. it is so important. >> reporter: even members of his own party are breaking ranks. >> i didn't vote for roy moore. i wouldn't vote for roy moore. i think the republican party can do better. >> reporter: moore's opponent, democrat, doug jones, making a last-minute push for the african-american vote, campaigning with cory booker. >> there's only one candidate in this race that has an opportunity of reaching across the aisle and trying to be effective. that is not roy moore. >> reporter: to give you a sense

of how untraditional the final stretch of this campaign has been, it's been almost a week since roy moore held a scheduled official public event. he has a scheduled rally tonight, however, with former white house chief strategist, steve bannon. >> thank you very much. also this morning, the national conversation over sexual misconduct is focusing squarely on the white house. nbc's senior national correspondent, kate snow, here to explain that. >> reporter: in just a few hours, a nonprofit documentary film company will host a press conference, where women will recount their allegations of sexual misconduct against the president. the group says it will demand a congressional investigation into president trump. this morning, several women who leveled sexual misconduct accusations against president trump in the past, will speak together at a press conference in new york. seeking renewed attention in the context of the #metoo movement. the president has denied the

allegations. so has the white house. >> is the official white house position that all these women are lying? >> yeah. we've been clear on that from the beginning. >> reporter: just 24 hours, u.n. ambassador, nikki haley, said this -- >> they should be heard and they should be dealt with. we heard from them prior to the election. and i think any woman who has felt violated or mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up. >> reporter: at least a dozen women have made accusations against president trump, saying he harassed, or groped them. >> he turned to me and embraced me and gave me a kiss on the lips. >> this is not acceptable behavior for anyone. >> reporter: the president's lewd remarks about women, caught on a hot mic in 2005. >> when you're a star, you can do anything. grap them grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: then, candidate trump, grilled about the tape.

bill. nbc national correspondent, peter alexander, at the white house for us. >> reporter: the morning, president trump's team says they're nearing a victory on the push for the tax cut bill. one aide described his closing argument, the final pitch, as congress closes in on a vote. president trump, back at the white house, gearing up for a crucial week on taxes. selling the plan on twitter, despite criticism it benefits the wealthy more than the middle class. arguing the bill is shaping up better than expected. as they try to iron out differences between house and senate versions, they're getting an earful from opponents. jeff flake confronted by an activist on an airplane, pressing flake to reconsider his support of the bill. >> i need you to make your vote back to your principles, senator. and for the rest of your life,

you will be proud if you vote this bill down. >> reporter: new this morning, on the russia investigation, nbc news has learned special counsel robert mueller is zeroing in what happened inside the white house, during a critical 18-day period this year. when officials were told that michael flynn was told he was ssu acceptable to blackmail. investigators have asked multiple witnesses, including don mcgahn, to walk them through that stretch in detail. some believe the special counsel's goal is to learn when president trump learned flynn lied to the fbi. all this as the president ratchets up his war on the news media, after several news organizations issued reports on the president. trump saying a "washington post"

report reporter should be fired about an inaccurate tweet about the crowd size in florida. critics pouncing, accusing president trump of being a hypocrite. noting his wrong record of making false and misleading claims without apologizing or correcting himself. more than 1,600 since taking office. and now, t"the new york times" s pulling back the curtain on life in the white house. the president spends at least four hours a day, and sometimes as much as twice that, in front of a television. and quenches his thirst, drinking up to a dozen diet cokes each day. a lot of insight into the president's routine there. fire, the fifth-largest in the sta state's history, growing even larger. kristen dahlgren from out west. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. yeah. incredible to see every hillside on fire. take a look and you can see it closer up. fire officials say the topography makes this so difficult. now 30,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. this morning, california's coast in flames. santa barbara county full of thick, dry brush, fueling the inferno. >> the fire has the intensified every day. the first night, it burned five hours in less than three hours. it's continuing to do that. >> reporter: nearly 6,000 firefighters are battling the thomas fire, the region's largest blaze. on the ground, exhausted crews are working their seventh-day

straight. helped by choppers in the air. all in hopes of containing this fire. the firefighters gather here. one in the truck has been injured. they're trying to treat him. this is where they were trying to make a stand. >> three-quarters of a mile and just -- >> reporter: parts of beach towns under monday tear evacuations. ellen degeneres tweeting, we had to evacuate our pets. i'm thankful to everyone in the community and all of the firefighters. farther south in san diego county, the lilac fire has destroyed 180 structures. at the equine training center, tragedy. 46 horses perished in the flames. two trainers were burned trying to save them. including martin block, with

burns over half her body. >> these individuals, the horses are their life. and they wanted to remain with their horses as long as they could. >> reporter: down in san diego, they've actually allowed people to go back home. but here, they've lost ground against this fire containment. now, down to 10%. they say right now, it's just too hot to get up into those hills where the flames are. so, what their plan is to be down by the homes, wringing them and trying to save them. >> thank you. now, to florida and the investigation into a deadly police shooting there. newly released video is showing the tense moments that led up to it. nbc's kerry sanders in lauderdale lakes with that story. kerry, good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. the sheriff here in broward county was quick to release the video. it caught the violence and the gunfire. we should warn you, the visuals are disturbing.

a man, assaulting a florida sheriff's deputy, just moments before being fatally shot. recorded by police body cameras, surveillance video and eyewitness cell phones. the confrontation happening at this florida apartment complex, after shawn youngward responded to a disturbance call. as he enters one of the apartments, the suspect, jean pedro pierre, comes to the door and exchanges words with the deputy. >> say it again. say it again. >> reporter: and things quickly become heated. pierre, who was unarmed, chases the officer down the hallway, taking swipes, as deputy youngward calls for backup, and then, fires histizer. >> get down, man. >> what is wrong with you? >> but it has little impact. and pierre, once again, charges the officer. >> stand down.

>> youngward draws his baton. but the suspect punches him and the deputy falls on his ground. on his back, youngward is kicked several times. from above, neighbors recording the clash, try desperately to convince the 42-year-old suspect, to back off. >> let him go, bro. >> reporter: moments later, another deputy, steven briggs, arrives on the scene. ignorining verbal commands, piee heads towards the second officer. then, three shots ring out. pierre later died at a nearby hospital. now, detectives say an investigation is under way. a grand jury will determine whether the shooting was justified. >> deputy briggs exited his vehicle. and he gave several clear, concise, lawful and legal orlandos to mr. pierre. mr. pierre chose a path of

good morning, everyone. we've got breaking news this morning that's happening here in new york city. police are responding to an explosion of some sort that's happened in midtown manhattan near the port authority bus terminal. this is a major point of departure, subway area. the subway trains that go through this station are being evacuated as a precaution now.

we want to get right to nbc news investigative reporter tom winter who is with us by phone. tom, good morning to you. what are your sources telling you? >> reporter: this is very early in the investigation. we don't yet know how powerful or large this explosion was. we don't even know for certain whether or not this was some sort of natural gas explosion or whether this was some sort of intentional act. we do know that this incident has prompted a significant response from both the nypd and the fire department here in new york. we also know that the nypd has dispatched the bomb squad. it's usually standard practice in this incident. some preliminary information we're getting is that this is a -- this may have been a lone actor that may have been involved in this. they have somebody that they're looking to talk to right now. so whether or not that person turns out to be somebody who got tied up in this or whether or not it turns out that this is some sort of intentional incident, that's something that's very much under

investigation. but as you said, there's an explosion at 42nd. >> and we're looking now at some images that are coming to us. we can see a massive police response as you have described. the police said that many ambulances have been requested. as you mentioned, we don't know if this was done as a precaution or whether there are injuries connected to this explosion. again, an explosion near new york's port authority bus terminal. this is at 8th avenue and 42nd street in new york. it is close to times square. this is the heart of new york city. we will continue to watch as we get information. as our reporter juste mentioned, there may be someone in custody, but unclear what the connection is. we're going to stay on this. we'll keep you update with the information as we get it. most of you will return now to more of "today." i'm savannah guthrie in new york. nbc news special report.
