night's snow still causing problems on some roads tonight. and the drive home tomorrow might be a bad one as well. the first alert weather team tracking snow that could cause more problems for drivers. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. it won't be a lot of snow but the timing is something we're watching carefully. let's get to chief meteorologist tammy souza. we have slippery conditions tonight as well. >> we do. we did not make it above freezing today. in fact most of the area below freezing. 27 in philadelphia. off to the west no warmth. 18 in pittsburgh. let's check the area where you live. 23 in coatesville this hour. 28 in dover, wilmington 24. along the yersy shore, 22 in atlantic city. 29 in wild wood. things are not going to be warm. tomorrow morning we will be quite cold. the wind chills in the teens once again. overnight, 22 in philadelphia. tonight 16 in allentown, 18 in coatesville, 20 in violet and 24 in stone harbor. anything on the ground will be

icy which is a big problem. we have a first alert issued. we have a little storm coming through tomorrow afternoon. this storm is going to produce snow. the first alert is basically for south jersey, delaware and philadelphia. we are going to be looking at one to seven tomorrow afternoon. the biggest impact will be the evening commute and all of you out maybe shopping or going to holiday parties, it is going to be a fast-moving coastal storm, maybe one to two-inches of snow. any snow at all on the frozen roadways is going to create problems. we will talk about this more when i come back and time out when the snow will be in your neighborhood. jim. >> all right, tammy. look at this. cars stuck on the ice. drivers had a tough time navigating this icy street in roks borough tonight. neighbors tell us a number of cars had trouble trying to get up and down the hilly stretch today. >> staplesometimes we can't get out because it is too slippery and cars slide down the hill and they slip up the hill.

>> we reached out to the streets department and they told nbc 10 they sent a salt truck out to that street. get winter weather updates any time by downloading the nbc 10 app. be sure to check in with the morning team for the latest forecast. that's starting at 4:00 a.m. also tonight, remembering the victims of gun violence. today marks five years since 26 people were shot and killed at sandy hook elementary school. a vigil was held in philadelphia to honor their memory. as nbc 10's drew smith shows us the city's own struggle with deadly violence couldn't be ignored ♪ >> reporter: their voices spread the sound of hope the philadelphia girls choir in the middle of a festive and bright square marking a day. >> the mass shooting again and

again. >> our rate of gun violence is off the charts. it is never too soon to honor the victims with action. >> reporter: mothers like cheryl pedro came out to offer support. her son died in a philadelphia shooting. the killer hasn't been found. >> not only am i my son's voice. i'm the voice for a lot of mothers who lost their children to violence. >> reporter: the number of homicides is up 13% in philadelphia this year just crossing the 300 mark this week after these deadly shootings. it will be the first time since 2012 the city will end the year with a number that high. the city has new leadership in the homicide division but advocates say more has to be done. >> more gun laws more door-to-door and helping solve the cases now that are not even solved. >> we have to keep pushing and fighting and we will keep doing that. we won't give up.

>> reporter: this group says it is important to keep this top of mind on somber an verse years like this they say they are lobbying officials to close gun loopholes. two cousins charged in a killing spree in bucks county say they didn't kill anyone. they pled not guilty to multiple murder charges during separate hearing today. dinardo is charged with the deaths of four men found buried on his family's farm in july. the disappearances of the four young men sparked an exhaustive manhunt. denard owe confessed he agreed to sell drugs to the victims and lured them to the far and killed them up. an update on the fire that killed two young brothers. they're blaming a faulty extension cord plugged into a space heater. nbc 10's keith jones was there tonight where facebooks continue

to mourn and remember the victims victims. >> reporter: the memorial continues to grow in front of the house where firefighters couldn't get to the two young boys in time. they're in therapy tonight and the community is coming together in support of the surviving family. hearts feeling blue two weeks before christmas. >> i like a lot of jokes. they make me feel better. >> third greater writes to his classmates whose brothers died. he said counsellors went to his school. >> i know sometimes stuff happens and sometimes even rare it can happen in your school so i know that it can be important to help them. >> reporter: cardboard boxes filled with supplies and condolences were shared. >> i'm a father of four. i don't even -- i can't even fathom it. >> reporter: chris jones clutched his daughter sophia. he and his family helped organize the fundraiser. >> all we have in life is each other really. some of us might have nice cars

some might not. at the end of the day all we have is each other. >> reporter: the house is less than five minutes away. state police say the fire here wednesday morning was sparked by an electrical cord used to power a space heater. the red cross says they should always be plugged directly into the wall. >> and not to use extension cords or power strips. they can easily be overloaded by the amount of current those space heaters are pulling just to stay warm. >> reporter: the fire injured montgomery county depp situate sheriff brian luk can enens and wife and daughter. two didn't survive, leaving behind a crater of sadness this community aims to fill. >> i saw someone sad so i walked up and hugged them. >> reporter: that fundraiser is happening again tomorrow night, the same place, the fire station there from 6:00 to 9:00. reporting in switesville, keith jones, nbc 10 nurs galloway township police are looking for a man they believe was trying to set the station on

fire. this surveillance individual crow shows him walk up to the front entrance and throw something towards the lighting. police say he tried to light whatever it was in his hand but it never ignited tonight the clash over glass. corner stores in philadelphia may have to take down their bullet-proof barriers. a new law gives lni authority to determine if the barriers stay or go. it is part of a broader bill that targets so-called stop and goes. the businesses obtained restaurant licenseser to the purpose of selling alcohol but often they don't have food or required sitting. >> they are not delis but places to buy products to get high. they're the modern day pusher. >> store owners fear taking down the glass around their registers will put lives at risk. if you were out in old city early this morning you might have seen what police were chasing, a cow. >> range, range to have a cow on the highway.

going far away from home to help the u.s. territory on its road to the recovery. >> reporter: a warm welcome on a cold night at newcastle air force base. more than 30 soldiers from the delaware national guard returned home from puerto rico. the sight of familiar faces melted the hearts of the men and women who stepped off the plane. the group spent two months on the island helping with hurricane relief efforts. >> it was really humbling experience, so it was just like -- it was an honor to go help people. >> reporter: after a quick debriefing, it was time to reunite with their loved one. jalisa dillon came to greet her boyfriend. how is it like to have him back? >> i miss him so much. words can't explain. >> reporter: what felt longer the 60 days you were there or the plane ride from puerto rico to here? >> i would definitely say the plane ride. >> reporter: while the 1049th is back from the island -- >> we're packing up here and heading down to reside permanently. >> reporter: april pedrick is

moving there at the end of the month. her group will provide relief to farmers on the island which includes solar generators and water filtration systems. >> need to get around and get roads clear and seeds planted. >> reporter: she won't be alone. she will work with a team and her mom lives in puerto rico. >> she just got electricity. >> reporter: she will live behind the mount airy community she lived in for five years. for her it is a labor of love. >> the land is alive and there's a joy it brings. >> reporter: brandon hudson, "nbc 10 news." opponents are threatening to sue after the fcc voted today to repeal net neutrality rules. the repeal essentially means internet providers can slow down access to content from companies like netflix, hulu and youtube if those companies don't pay for faster service. providers could also route you to content they own. for consumers that could mean higher prices or no access to the content you want but all four major providers say their internet practices will remain

the same tomorrow is the last day of open enrollment for obamacare. right now the number of people signed up for coverage is four million higher than last year. despite that the future of obamacare is uncertain tonight. republicans are pushing once again to undermine that law. they've included a provision in the new tax bill that would get rid of the mandate to buy health insurance. if that happens, experts estimate 13 million people would choose to go without insurance. that would increase costs for those who are still on obamacare plans. to south jersey where state police rolled out the red carpet for its youngest trooper today. three-year-old benjamin graham was sworn in. he is battling cancer. he got an hon rory badge and showed off his uniform. his favorite part of the day was getting to take a spin in his official state cruiser. he is looking good in it a toy drive fit for a ninja.

richardson volunteered with members of the support center for child advocates. their annual toy drive brings christmas joy for 1500 children kid. he is one of the biggest hit stars on "american ninja warrior." a city whereverqualifier will be held in may. it was a battle of the voices on the streets tonight ♪ my true love game to me ♪ ♪ 12 drummers drumming ♪ >> this holiday music celebration featured groups from several local universities. the celebration was also a competition. the audience chose their favorite group, which ended in a three-way tie and each group walked away with a $700 prize. singing is hard enough out there, but especially in these temperatures. a warmup is on the way. we just have to endure well

some snow first and some more cold temperatures. an update on the "first alert forecast." >> we're not getting the warm up without a little work first. it is a very pretty night by bitterly cold. i'm surprised they could make their mouths work to sing. mine would be frozen shut. we will be watching out for icy roads, not just tonight and tomorrow morning through the commute, but throughout the day tomorrow. we only made it to 31 today. we should be around the freezing mark again tomorrow. we have a first alert in effect for snow tomorrow. this is basically south jersey, delaware and philadelphia. we will not get a lot. only one to two inches but it will fall in the of a noon and during the early evening commute. it is a very busy time on friday. got a lot of parties to go to and shopping and we already have icy roads. so this is a concern for us. and then we get a little warmer this weekend. we could see the 40s, especially by sunday. i've even slipped a few 50s in for next week. we will talk about that in a moment. right now in allentown it is only 16 degrees but it feels like 7. so another bitterly cold night there. wilmington 23, feels like

16 degrees out there. this is what you're going thing what up to. in philadelphia you're going the wake up to about 23 degrees, by 1:00 in the afternoon that light snow will already be falling. pennsylvania suburbs will wake up to 19. 26 in the afternoon with snow falling. 16 in lehigh valley. 26 in afternoon with snow falling. del delaware will wake up to 22. that's at 1:00 in the afternoon. new jersey will wake up to 21. you should see the snow sometime after 1:00 tomorrow. jersey shore waking up to 24 35. so you will see that snow it may be a slushy snow, back and forth between rain and show. let's look at where that is right now. nothing here in the philadelphia area nothing in jersey nothing in delaware nothing in the lehigh valley. we just have some high thin clouds. we are watching a couple of waves. this is always tricky. when you can't see the system but you know it is going to come together. so we have a wave that will be moving up the east coast, and that's going to be combined with

a little push of energy that comes out of the great lakes region. there's a trough here. all of that comes together as a coastal storm by early tomorrow afternoon, and that's going to be right over us. so let's time it out for you so you get an idea of what is going to happen. we're okay until we get into tomorrow morning. the clouds start to move in temperatures are very cold. look at this. boom, between about noon and 1:00 we see the first of this coming together. we'll see the second part of it coming up the coast, but you can see it has coated the entire area. by 4:30 it drops into south jersey and delaware. i think that's where we'll see the heaviest accumulation one to two inches and tricky during the evening commutes on icy roads. out of here by 7:00. temperatures don't recover. on saturday we start quite cold but a southerly push of wind. we make it to the upper 30s maybe even low 40s, do the same thing on sunday with a few extra clouds, and then we get rain moving in here on sunday night. how much snow? there are several models. one says we will get that inch
