tv   NBC10 News at 4pm  NBC  December 15, 2017 4:00pm-5:01pm EST

4:00 pm
let's begin with tammie souza with the latest timing and track. >> the snow started about 10:00, 11:00 this morning in the lehigh valley and berks county. and as we actually put this into motion right now, we're going to be looking at our radar. let's go ahead and throw up our source if we can. there we go. and you can see the darker shades of purple, those darker shades are where we have the heavier snow that's beginning to come down. you can see clearing out in berks county and the lehigh valley. that's good news there. we zoom in, philadelphia, a steadier snowfall as you actually head along that i-95 corridor and over into new jersey. chester, philadelphia, down to washington township, that's where we're seeing that steady snowfall right now. we go down to middletown, also seeing that in parts of delaware. salem in south jersey. not so much in georgetown. you get into the southern portion of delaware you may see
4:01 pm
flurries flying, maybe a little bit of wet sloppy snow mixing in with that. along the jersey shore you haven't gotten hit yet. but the jersey shore, just starting to see that snowfall there. we were expecting to see slightly higher totals there because you'll see the snow for the longest. we go up toward reading, you're almost in the clear, allentown, you still have snow. pocono, where you would expect to see it it's only going to be spotty snow headed through that area. let's put this into motion hour by hour. we're starting now, this is our featurecast model. you can see it beginning to clear. 6:00, philadelphia, you should start to clear. that's when we'll see south jersey and parts of delaware and the jersey shore being hit so hard. we go on through and by about 8:00 tonight, everybody should be clear of the snow. i have to tell you, we're well below freezing, the roadways are going to be impacted. there's a lot of ice out there that's left over from the past couple of days. we did not make it above the freezing point for today. we'll continue to watch as we
4:02 pm
clear out, a very cold night, a cold morning tomorrow. everything from the steps to the bridges to the overpasses, to the sidewalks are going to be impacted and very, very slippery. guys? back over to you. >> all right. thanks for that one. let's take a live look at allentown, definitely gray skies out there. again, as tammie mentioned, it's going to be very cold tonight. even as the snow moves through our area, you want to be careful on the roads if you have to be out. it could create problems for people heading home after work this afternoon. nbc 10's clauaundrea cline-thoms joining us live in center city. >> we can see the snow calling, collecting on your jacket as well. it's coming down. >> reporter: it is. it's been coming down steadily for a few hours now. as you can see the sidewalk is completely covered. i want to show you that it's about a little under an inch right now. no heavy lifting just yet. but i want to show you the
4:03 pm
street. the street is also covered right now. and that is a concern for drivers. they are, as you see, they are taking it slowly. it's not usually this slow out here on broad street, especially during this time of the afternoon. now, the city was waiting for the snow to begin falling before deploying its 85 trucks to put out salt on the streets. for drivers, that is a warning. a lot of these roads had not been treated yet. those plows still have to come through and put down salt. that's something you need to be careful of as you go out. the city has also issued a code blue. that means it's dangerous to be outside for long periods of time. although it's snowed before, today they said they're going to have even more outreach teams out on the streets trying to get homeless folks inside, trying to convince them to go to shelters. you see people right now, you see all the snow on this person's hood right now. everybody's bundled up trying to
4:04 pm
get to where they're going. we're going to stay here, monitor the situation, and have another update within the next hour. reporting live in center city, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> thanks so much. we know everyone wants to know just how much snow are you going to see where you live? meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is breaking it down for us neighborhood by neighborhood. glenn, it really does depend on where you live? >> yeah, and some places are getting it earlier than others, some are going to be getting it toward the end of this storm. let's go neighborhood by neighborhood. this all came in from the southwest. it all kind of exploded from nowhere. it's not like a storm that moved in from ohio or up from georgia. it's a very unusual kind of system. let's go one area at a time. we'll go hour by hour, of course, we started off very slowly at the jersey shore. it was partly a mixture. then as we go into the next hour, we're talking about one to
4:05 pm
two inches of snow. by the time it's over, this is the area that's going to end the latest. two inches or so in atlantic city, inch and a half at cape may. two and a half in vineland. 2.7 in hammondton. that's fairly significant snows, especially since a lot of it is going to fall in a short period of time. here we are rin delaware. it was too warm in southern delaware as you can see with the rain. but we've got to go a couple hours before this happens. by the time we go to 7:00 or 8:00 when it's over, a little over an inch at lewis, georgetown, dover, an inch and a half as we head toward northern delaware we're closer to two inches. in philadelphia itself, we started off right around the noon hour, started off very light. and then, of course, started coming down. the temperature well below
4:06 pm
freezing. and so as we go through the afternoon and into the evening, we have amounts that are in the two to two and a half inch range. and further to the west, in the northern and western suburbs, lehigh valley, we're seeing lesser amounts of snow. it's already tapering off there. and we're talking about .7 of an inch in allentown and a little bit over an inch in reading. this is a quick moving system as we've seen. it's going to move out fast. by 8:00, it's all gone, but with the temperatures as low as it is, everything is going to ice over again tonight and into tomorrow morning. we'll talk more about the weekend coming up. >> all right, glenn, we'll check back with you. the snow has been coming down now for a few hours in montgomery county . >> you can see snow covering trees and cars.
4:07 pm
deanna durannte is joining us. >> reporter: traffic according to penn dot and local police in the tri township area they say traffic got heavier quicker because people left work early. always a chokepoint for traffic he here, but if you can see beyond the traffic light it's not moving. we've been talking to police, they tell us the roads are heavy with cars. fortunately no major incidents to report. people tell us they wanted to get out while the getting was good. >> i slid a little bit coming out of the parking lot. >> i took the afternoon off from work, legitimately. and i'm stopping, running errands on my way home. so it's great. >> reporter: you are looking
4:08 pm
from the direction of norristown there as cars are coming up ridge pike where the road has two lanes that gets down into one lane as you head towards philadelphia. we're told that area right now, very slow going. if that's the route you're taking. take a look at the roads, you can see part of the problem here is the roads were very, very cold. even though salting was done with penn dot roads and local roads, it's still a little slippery for cars out there. we checked in with police in upper marion, they say in the span of five minutes they had four fender benders. make sure you take it easy on the roads, it may not be a ton of snow, but it is still slippery out there. that's the latest reporting l e live. nbc 10 news. >> four accidents in five minutes. that tells the story right there. thank you. let's take a live look over center city right now. as you saw, the snow is coming down here in center city,
4:09 pm
philadelphia. it has been for a few hours. you need to be careful out there. when this is all over, the philadelphia area could see more than two inches in some spots. telemundo 62 is live for us in sky force 10. >> where are you right now and what are the conditions like? >> reporter: erin, jim, we're eastbound and it's totally slippery out here. take a look at the ground, you see accumulation and slush here. if you're on a highway or on a more transitive road, you can see the accumulation, we've seen cars just really slowing down. we're going about 20 miles per hour here. it's a 35 mile zone. a lot of brake lights here. people want to take some time as they're going home or wherever they need to go. you're going to be in some traffic very likely. we're heading down kelly drive,
4:10 pm
we're going to go into center city and then head into new jersey. so stay with us to check out the latest conditions on the road. live from the storm force, jim, erin back to you. >> i was on mlk boulevard and it looked very much like that. it's almost worse when there's a light amount of snow because you have a false sense of security but that's when the roads are slippery. really need to take it easy. >> we heard that woman slid coming out of a parking spot. we're getting in pictures and video from social media. >> we have a mixed review. i think it depends if you're driving in the situation, the review is not so good. a lot of people are making the most of it as well. let's take a look, we have a lot of tools out there. let's take a look at one of our cameras in the allentown area. we'll show we have snowing conditions up in the lehigh valley as well. also, conditions from the presidential city camera, we've been walking the schuylkill
4:11 pm
expressway back up here. it there's the allentown camera for you. you can see snowing likely there. this will be one of the first places where the snow ends in the allentown, berks county vicinity. further to the south, that is a whole different story. i've been looking at this camera all day long. if you're on the schuylkill expressway right now, the commute is awful, along with many other roadways. let's take a look at some of the pictures and photos and video you've been sending us. we've been seeing so many of these videos and pictures coming in here. this is from south jersey, you can see the streets, snow covered. this is one of our spots where we think the most snow will fall. this is near haddonfield in new jersey. this video along the new jersey turnpike. even the new jersey turnpike itself, a major roadway, has these slushy spots. no where is unsusceptible to seeing these slushy conditions.
4:12 pm
you can see in the city, a lot of the side and secondary streets are snowy as well. one last thing i want to show you, this is on our website and also on the app. it's nbcphiladelphia.com/traffic. where you see all these little hands, that means we have an incident. they're everywhere. so if you're headed out and you're thinking about traveling, maybe think again. take a look at this map to see if the traffic route that you're going on is going to be impacted. there are hundreds, if not nearly thousands of incidents out there right now. so we'll have the latest coming up i'll show you more social video. glenn and tammie will be here on the latest on the timing and the next storm coming towards next weekend. >> thanks steve. taking a live look at i-95 at wilmington from our blue rocks camera, it's moving along slowly as well. it's going to be one of those afternoons.
4:13 pm
it's 12 minutes after 4:00, a lot of people decided to head home early on a friday afternoon to beat this weather. there's heavy traffic there. we're going to keep an eye on it for you. tim furlong is live for us in newark. >> a lot of folks trying to do some shopping, but this is not the best weather to be out there. >> reporter: if you like snow, it's a good festive start to the shopping weekend. you can see it's coming down hard. it really piles up quickly. a little while ago i would have said it's a pleasant distraction. you can see we've gotten a little bit more snow now and it's starting to pile up. this is at the cabello snow. you can see people coming out, they're going to be getting onto the roads. del dot said when it put down the road salt it did a good job of surviving through today. in some spots it is slippery.
4:14 pm
we've seen cars slipping and sliding. people want to have fun coming out to shop, but people are telling us on the road, even though state police are not reporting any major accidents, they're starting to say at this point that the roads are getting dicey. take a listen to a couple drivers we just spoke with. >> slow and actually it was a little bit of slipperiness. it was getting a little treacherous out there. >> my feeling is it's going to be cold, let it snow. if it's going to be cold and not snow that's a waste of time. >> reporter: the speed limit has been reduced on i-495. you can see the snow is piling up here, there are slick spots, this is very slippery turf here in the parking lot. they have put salt down here. again, the snow is sitting on top of it. they're doing the best they can. if you look up onto the onramp over there, that's the onramp from the complex here to get
4:15 pm
back on 95 north. it is barely moving. i want to point out visibility, it's not that great. take a look over there, it's getting a little hard to see across the parking lot. wherever you are, be very careful. i'm going to go inside cabellos for a while. we're live, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. tim, thanks, we'll check back with you from newark. >> back to our first alert weather, tracking this snow. this is a live look at the schuylkill expressway from our presidential city apartment camera. check that out. a lot of folks going really slowly right now. as tim just mentioned the visibility out there is not great. we also know there are slick spots out there, so you're definitely going to have to take your time. let's go to harry hairston who is outside of our studios. >> where it's also coming down here in montgomery county. >> reporter: take a look at this. what is on our patio right now? that looks like a couple inches,
4:16 pm
close to, i don't know, i don't have a measuring stick, but that could be almost two and a half inches. that's what's hitting here right onthen stre on the street. traffic is getting very snarled as the snow continues to come down. charlie, our photographer is doing a good job showing you. traffic is moving slower and picking up a whole lot more. we'll keep you in touch of what's going on. reporting live, harry hairston, nbc 10 news. back to you guys in the studio. >> all right. telemundo 62 still live for us in storm force 10. >> last time we checked in with you you were on kelly drive. tell us where you are now and what are you seeing? >> reporter: still on kelly drive, jim and erin. we're eastbound. you see in front of us a city salt truck doing what it's
4:17 pm
doing, putting out some salt on the streets here. if you are behind one of these, also, if you find yourself behind or near one, you want to stay clear so they can do their job out here. there's a lot of slush out here. it's very slippery. if you're on kelly drive, we're going right now about ten miles per hour. this is a 35 mile zone. you know a lot of people also go a little faster. right now, we're seeing a lot of brake lights. take some extra time as you're going home. live from the storm force, back to you. >> we're sort of right in the thick of it right now in our area. and, yeah, this is center city as well. which camera is this for us? yeah, this is from one of our live trucks on broad on pine. the sidewalks have a little bit more as well. >> it was good to see one of the city trucks out there trying to lay some salt down. you can see there's a lot of slush there on the roads. meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is standing by.
4:18 pm
this is a fast mover you're saying, but the snow is still coming down. we've got a couple more hours of this. >> yes. and the temperature is so low that the roads are cold and that's why the snow is sticking. normally in december, we've got marginal temperatures, and it tends to melt during the daytime hours. not today. you can see the back edge of this thing, already past a harrisburg, this is a very small system overall. it just happened to be concentrated during the wrong time of day. we can see the darker blues or purples depending on your tv, are the heavier snows. but even that is not especially heavy. this is the highest intensity that we have. what it is in relation to the other snow, so up here with the lightest snow -- well, compare today the heaviest snow, this is four times heavier than that is. even the heaviest snow is not
4:19 pm
what we will consider a big snowstorm for the wintertime. for philadelphia, the colors are getting a little bit brighter, a little bit whiter. less blue. that indicates, to me, that it's lightening up a little bit. but in new jersey, that's where the heaviest of it is right now. especially in pemberton, you can see getting those darker blues. and the darker blues into central delaware and into south jersey. the back edge of this thing already moving out. the visibility gives us an idea of how heavy the snow is. potts town, mount holly, wilmington. that's heavy snow. one and a half miles in reading is not bad. lancaster not bad. dover is not bad yet. not too bad at the shore yet. so very, very small system. look at the temperatures. 25 in philadelphia.
4:20 pm
23 in mount holly. there's no warm air anywhere in our region. the only place close to the freezing mark, not in northern delaware, not in central delaware, you got to go to southern delaware and right along the beaches. milton at 32. millsboro 32. this area is starting to cool down and that will change over to snow later in the evening and the next couple of hours. here's the hour by hour futurecast going -- ending from west to east, pretty quickly, by 6:00 things should really be tapering off in the philadelphia area and pretty much over with in the rest of pennsylvania. and by 7:30 or 8:00, it's even done with at the show. again, very limited time period. so the amounts of snow we showed you some of the details, but in general, one to three inches, a little bit more in parts of new jersey and delaware. generally away from the
4:21 pm
coastline because there was a marginal temperature at the beginning. we've got snow, maybe till 7:00. and then we're clearing out tonight, but you can see those temperatures way down into the 20s. so anything that's around is going to refreeze. and so there will be some icy areas tomorrow morning. you're going to have to shovel in the morning. but you're not going to have to shovel six inches of snow. it's a limited kind of storm. quick and out of here. >> even when the snow stops, you still have to be careful. >> yeah, because unless you get rid of the snow, it's just go to stay there. there's nothing that's going to eliminate it until tomorrow when the sun comes out. >> all right. we'll check back in with you. make sure you have the nbc 10 app with you to find out when the snow will move out of your neighborhood tonight. download it for free to get the interactive radar and an hour by hour forecast right on your smartphone. let's take a live look from plymouth township where the
4:22 pm
snow, it is coming down. the traffic is heavy. we've been seeing a lot of brake lights. our continuing weather coverage after this. we have this, stolen guns skyrocketing. the nbc 10 investigators reveal the plague of guns stolen else where, now being used to commit crimes in our neighborhoods. just keep digging. if you think we've seen a lot of snow this past week, think again. the perks for this back breaking work at buffalo stadium. here's a look at the closing bell on wall street where stocks closed at all time highs today. michael: i'm thankful that
4:23 pm
i'm alive and have a second chance. james: i'm thankful for the help and the opportunity that i received. darlene: i'm thankful to be able to help people in crisis. vanessa: i'm thankful that addiction is treatable, and that help is available. christie: new jersey is experiencing a heroin epidemic fueled by opioid painkillers. but if you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, i want you to know:

4:25 pm
a live look now from storm force 10 near the philadelphia museum of art. we've seen bumper to bumper traffic. you can see also see one of the salt crews there, ready to get to work. we're staying on top of the snow that's falling throughout the region right now. a lot of slick roads out there.
4:26 pm
be careful, take your time. maybe this will make us feel better. we're getting snow right now, but unfortunate not this kind. lake effect never seems to bother buffalo fans. they call this football weather. $11 an hour to shovel snow out of the stadium. if you shovel for more than four hours, a game day ticket. good luck to the miami dolphins who will be playing out of their element. take a live look at i-95 and wilmington near our blue rocks camera where traffic has been at a crawl in times. the timing of this snow is critical. absolutely. we're tracking the snow in your neighborhood so you'll know when it's exiting and how much has fallen and how long it's going to take to melt. snow getting heavier in parts of south jersey and accumulating.
4:27 pm
i'm ted greenburg with a looive report next.
4:28 pm
4:29 pm
4:30 pm
nbc 10 first quarter weather tracking snow. this is in center city and also in i-95 in south philadelphia. traffic is a mess on both the side streets and the major roads as well. take a look at what's happening in newcastle county. snow falling down on shoppers here outside the cabellos in wilmington. what makes this afternoon's snow so critical is the timing, right in the middle of the afternoon commute. >> don't you just love that? not so much. let's go to tammie souza with the timing and track. >> so many people going home
4:31 pm
from work, there's shopping, get togethers. if this was the middle of the night. not a big deal. but it's falling on completely frozen ground. everything is going to stick. it's a lighter fluffier snow, so we're going to be concerned with watching this for the next couple of hours. where you see the darker shades of purple with our doppler radar is where we're seeing steadier snowfall coming down. you can see it's still crossing the area, moving off to the north and east. philadelphia, a steady snowfall right now. that's where we have the darker shades coming down. chester, and washington township, a darker shade of purple. this is going to come and go with these little snow squalls. smyrna, middletown, all of those areas in central and northern delaware looking at steadier snow. you get down here, georgetown, light snow. longneck, bethany beach, not a whole lot going on there.
4:32 pm
along the jersey shore, cape may, still seeing light snow coming down, but we are looking at the snow beginning to pick up as it moves to the east. if you're in richmond or reading, you're starting to see a break. allentown, you have break coming your way. the poconos looking at a bit of a break. here's the timing, 4:30, we're watching the snow make its way across the area. 6:30, philadelphia you may be in the clear. by 7:00, everybody's in the clear. it's done and we're starting to see the skies clear out. that's bad because it's going to become extremely cold tonight. please use caution. all surfaces, whether it's your porch, your sidewalk, or the road in front of your house, it will be slippery and dangerous at times. back over to you. our team coverage continues with nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenburg, he's live for us in egg harbor city. >> the snow has started there too? >> reporter: it has. it has gotten heavier in the
4:33 pm
past half an hour or so. it's sticking and leaving a coating of snow on side streets, the grass and sidewalks as well. this is the whitehorse pike. this is a busy roadway and you can see it's mainly just wet at this point. within the past couple of minutes i have seen salt spreading trucks from both the new jersey d.o.t. pass through. they tell me they have at least 250 salt spreaders out in south jersey and central jersey. both d.o.t. crews, they didn't brine today because of residual salt on state highways from the two prior snowfalls in the past week or so. i caught up with jillian gallagher, her kids, they're psyched for the snow. >> they want to go home and build a snowman. i told them we should wait, but they're excited. >> reporter: need a little bit
4:34 pm
more snow on the ground. >> a little. >> reporter: do you like the snow? >> oh, yeah. more than anything in the whole world. >> reporter: why? >> because like, you get to do so much things. you can even play volleyball. >> reporter: i've never seen snow volleyball, but something i would certainly like to see. one thing to let you know about if you're traveling on the garden state parkway, there is a speed limit restriction in effect, 45 miles per hour right now from summers point all the way up to the new york state line. live in egg harbor city, i'm ted greenburg, nbc 10 news. >> a new winter olympic sport. we'll keep an eye out for it. we want to see your weather pictures and video from where you live. send them to us through the see it, share it feature on the nbc 10 app. then we might use them on tv. new at 4:00, stolen guns skyrocketing. >> what we're seeing over the last few years is a sharp rise. >> nbc 10 investigators reveal
4:35 pm
the plague of guns stolen elsewhere, now being used to commit crimes in our neighborhood. >> i don't know how he got it. i would like to know how he got it. in recent months the nbc 10 investigators have been uncovering new perspectives on gun violence in our communities. >> now investigative reporter george spencer is tackling the growing problem of stolen firearms and he encountered a murky underworld that almost no one has tracked until now. >> reporter: walking outside to sit on her front stoop julie's weary eyes display her agony. in the span of three years, she lost two sons to gun violence. both joshua and steven just 20 years old when they died. both police believe killed by firearms that were stolen from their rightful owners. >> it was losing the first, now i don't have any feelings. i feel numb.
4:36 pm
>> reporter: a grief stricken mother beyond words and yet her plight is increasingly common. the retired special agent in charge of philadelphia's atf knows from experience the number of stolen guns is climbing. but because the atf only maintains data on gun thefts at federally licensed firearm dealers like this one, the precise scope is hard to pin down. >> you really don't have a true reliable number of how many guns are actually being stolen. >> reporter: to better understand the stolen guns plague, nbc 10 and more than a dozen nbc stations across the country, teamed up with the non-profit journalism organization the trace. >> i can tell you invaluably the vast majority of these guns that are stolen will wind up being used in a crime. >> reporter: sure enough, we obtained data from more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies in 36 states plus the district
4:37 pm
of columbia. more than 840,000 gun records in total. and of those, we found more than 23,000 guns stolen across the country that were later connected in other crimes. including at least 1,500 serious violent crimes. across our region, we tallied almost 5,200 firearms seized, recovered or found during the past five years. and that same period, about 1,100 guns were reported lost or stolen. without data from major departments like philadelphia pd which refused our requests, and with no requirement to report a gun stolen in pennsylvania, our local tally is an incomplete sample. and, yet, we still found frightening examples. like a .40 caliber handgun reported lost to philly p.d. seized by lancaster police at a crime scene with four hollow point bullets inside. for the mother who has lost two
4:38 pm
of her three children, this little grandson jaden is a lifeline. and a reason to keep fighting the stolen gun plague. >> i'm going to make sure i do everything in my power to teach him right from wrong. teach him what guns can do to you. >> reporter: for the investigators, george spencer, nbc 10 news. the convicted trigger man in the death of patel's older son is in prison serving a 26 year prison. the man accused of killing her younger son is awaiting trial. just one family that's become a sad example of the growing problem. coming up, a look at the very newest tool in this fight, a way for investigators to connect one crime scene to another using the fingerprint of the gun itself. we'll show you how the technology works. nbc first alert weather tracking this snow that's coming down across our area. >> taking a live look at the

4:43 pm
it is easing a little bit in that area. >> yeah, and it's not really how much snow we're seeing this afternoon, but the timing and the temperatures that make it so critical. i'll let you know when it's going to move out next on nbc 10 news at 4:00.
