described what happened. >> at a certain point, the train started to wobble a little bit and then, you know, the next thing we knew, we were down in a ditch and the train had crumbled. >> right now investigators say it's too soon to know whether speed played a role in the crash but the system that limits the speed of trains to prevent crashes was not activated. this brings back similar memories in may 2015 in philly when eight people were killed from washington to new york. the train was traveling more than 100 miles per hour in a 50-per-mile-hour zone. president trump offered his thoughts and prayers for those involved in today's derailment and called for a quick approval of a plan for more spending on infrastructure. keith jones, nbc 10 news.

our coverage of this deadly derailment continues at 4:40. positive train control is the technology that can automatically slow down a train to avoid an accident. that's ahead at 4:30. now to south jersey where two people are dead after this crash, where one of the cars went right into a pole. state police on the scene right now of this creek. it happened around noon in tab p bett -- tabernacle. ted greenberg is there. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the investigation is well under way. new jersey state police confirmed to me two people are dead. they were inside that vehicle, a gmc yukon, which is wrapped around a pole right near the intersection and it hit the pole and caught fire just before noon today. right now there's no word from state police on what led to the

crash. it did prompt authorities to evacuate. more than 50 students and employees from the sequoia alternative program, which is part of the school district, and that program is housed in that building and that evacuation as a result of roads being closed in this area and concerns about buses not being able to get through later in the day. those students and staffers taken to a local transportation yard about five miles away, i'm told. parents are able to pick their kids up at that location. again, two people who were in that suv were killed. i'm staying in touch with new jersey state police to try to get more information on what led to that crash. live in tabernacle, ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. putting america first is the promise from president trump. he touched on a range of issues,

dean deanna durante is live. >> reporter: the governor said that senator leach should resign and leach in a statement late today said he's going to continue his work with the senate and had some other things to say as well. >> i was stunned. stunned. i mean, the poor people. >> reporter: she's known senator leach for years and her daughter worked for him. she and other supporters say they disagree with the article accusing the lawmaker of sexual misconduct. you saw him yesterday. how was he? >> he was hurt. he was sad. it's hard. he's dedicated his life to the district. he's trying to change gerrymandering. everything that is bad, he's trying to fix. and for them to turn on him like a rabbit dog is crazy.

>> reporter: she says calls for leach's resignation are premature. and today, pennsylvania governor calls for leach to resign his state senate post. we went to leach's county office. workers there are on the job but not talking. at leach's home, no one answered the door. leach says that the allegations are getting out of hand, writing on facebook saying he's taking a step back for his campaign from congress but not explaining what that means and wrote, while i've always been a gregarious person, it's heartbreaking to me that i've put someone in a position that has made them feel uncomfortable or disrespected. i will take more care in my words and my action and make it my top priority to help change the culture around us. >> reporter: now, the governor says he has not spoken with daylin leach since the statements were made public. he ended it by saying, i will

business. the company is buying snyder's lance and kettle brand and pop secret. kettle's is buying the company for $4.9 billion. a big step today at the university of delaware. construction is now under way on a new state-of-the-art facility. it will in newark. and this week we're going to learn more about what developers plan to add to the area around the lehigh valley national airport. 300 acres are available in hanover township. the airport authority is considering adding stores and restaurants and we'll learn more during a meeting on wednesday. senator john mccain is back home in arizona as he recovers from brain cancer and a viral

infection. that means he will miss the vote on the gop tax bill. republicans are likely to have enough support to pass the measure without him. mccain was admitting to walter reed medical center last week. he was dealing with the side effects of dealing with cancer. doctors say he's responding well to his treatment. president trump says he's not considering firing robert mueller but he's now criticizing the special counsel's access to documents before he took office. the head of the president's transition group called that move illegal in a letter to congress saying mueller got those e-mails improperly. and vladimir putin called president trump to thank him for a cia tip that stopped a series of bombings in st. petersburg. that call happened yesterday and russian officials say they were able to hunt down suspects that were planning to bomb a church and other sites in the city. the conversation is the second phone call between the two leaders since thursday.

>> philadelphia police say they have arrested a man who attacked this woman while her fiance listened helplessly over the phone. the attack happened over the weekend on 63rd street and west philadelphia. the suspect is 19 years old but his name hasn't been released. he came up from behind the woman and hit her in the face and head several times. doctor also have to wire her mouth shut and reconstruct part of her face. a new bill could let new jersey lawmakers re-enroll in the pension system after they get moved to a new office. critics say it's a move that would benefit a select few. new castle county police will have money to boost foot patrol. the county withdrew its application over concerns about future costs. the money would have been used to hire 15 new officers. the city of wilmington rejected

a similar grant earlier this year over cost concerns. wilmington firefighters want to change the delaware state law so they can carry a life-saving drug. right now, the law says they can't carry it. wilmington's fire department can't because it's only registered as a fire department. the fire battalion department says the partner would thank st. francis hospital for carrying the drug. a man is charged with attempted murder after police say he went on a rampage with a shotgun. sedric hodges shot at them and missed. while officers were searching for him, they found another man who had been shot in the arm. police found two other victims who had also been shot.

big smiles for a lancaster student. he was stopped by state police for driving with expired tags. he was arrested for not having his current documentation. it turns out his daca renewal application with many others was caught up in a temporary delay by the post office. daca allows students to go to work or school without fear of deportation. >> he had an expired vehicle registration which happens to all of us, you know, often and we just get it renewed. but for dreamers like us, that means potential separation from his family and deportation to a country that he hasn't seen in decades. >> he was locked up for four days but he's home this afternoon with his family. he was able to get an extension while he waits for his documents and next day in court. these students in bear are singing with excitement and sending donations that literally light up the holidays for people

in puerto rico. 10,000 students in the colonial school district have spent the last four weeks collecting batteries to send to the it land. today they counted their loot, close to 7,000 batteries. usually in puerto rico we have propane gas and don't use a lot of battery stuff but now they're in need of using batteries for flashlights, radios, for christmas lights. >> and area business donated and a local church is paying to ship the items there. george washington and his troops might not be able to make its trip across the delaware river. >> it's because of low water levels. that's the problem. organizers say a significant amount of rain or snow would have to fall. a decision to cross the river would be made just before christmas every year just like you see here. thousands gathered to see the e

so nobody is really cold. we've had a fair amount of sunshine. we have some clouds moving in from the west. we'll have a decent amount of sunshine tomorrow as well. we don't have any kind of strong weather systems approaching and so it's going to be another dry day. and much of the country is going to be dry. if you're traveling or have friends or relatives, they're going to be traveling this week. it's a big travel week. we're in pretty good shape, except for the pacific northwest and some rain down south. but as far as snow is concerned, nothing in the east, a little bit out in the rockies and the northern plain states but for this time of the year, pretty fortunate for the travel. even chicago could be on the borderline by friday. usually it would be on the snow side. and then this warm rain comes all the way up the east coast so

there could be travel issues and delays by friday and saturday due to the rain, not so much any kind of snow. over the next three days, look how hot it gets on tuesday. 54. it drops some on wednesday and even more on thursday and then starts going back up on friday. but the p.a. suburbs, not getting out of the 30s. by thursday afternoon, lehigh valley, even, close to 50 degrees tomorrow and close to 60 degrees in parts of delaware tomorrow while we're in the 40s on wednesday and low 40s on thursday. then, as we head toward the holiday weekend, it's kind of mild on friday, dry during the day, showers at night and could hit the lehigh valley in the afternoon. saturday is the wet day. kind of windy at the shore, too. look how mild. temperatures up near 60. and then on sunday, it's still not all that cold. still some lingering showers.

more people are opting to take an uber to the hospital instead of an ambulance. the two looked at ambulance uses between 2013 and 2015 and at the time uber was rolling in about 800 cities across the country. research suggests since more people are taking ubers for nonemergency rides to the hospital. >> well, scrolling through facebook can impact your mood. the people who passively scroll through facebook were in a worst mood afterwards. there are a couple of theories on this. one is, social envy or maybe they are missing out. people compare their lives to others and don't feel good about themselves. however, the study found that people who actively interact by

dover, rehoboth beach, 55. it cools down more on wednesday and more on thursday and then we start to go back up again. here we are on friday, well above normal with 52 degrees. generally dry during the day. may see showers friday night. could sneak into the lehigh valley friday afternoon. some neighborhoods will get the showers sooner but just about all neighborhoods will be pretty warm on saturday but we're all going to be pretty wet and at the shore may also be pretty windy. lingering showers that are possible on sunday. still not all that cold but after sunday, things change. here we are on saturday. the frigid air, the arctic air is on the way. but it sometimes takes a while to get here. saturday, we're still mild, as we can see. it gets closer on sunday.

responding. >> an inaugural amtrak went off the rails and more than six hours later, it still dangles off the interstate. >> now the investigation begins into what went wrong. good evening. i'm erin coleman. >> and i'm keith jones. >> we're hearing from one survivor. sa sara has the story. >> reporter: on monday morning, tragedy aboard amtrak 501. >> things just started to tip over and as it was going around and then all of a sudden ended up on its side and everything went dark and stuff started flying around and that was it and then it stopped. >> reporter: a stunned motorist watched the train derail. >> i was just right in front of

it. it was really nerve-racking and sick to your stomach after seeing this right now. >> reporter: multiple vehicles were hit by the falling train car as others came crashing into the pile. >> the people that were in all of the vehicles, even when you see the pictures, it's pretty horrific, at this point, nobody in any of the vehicles is a fatal. >> reporter: 77 passengers and five crew members were on board the train heading south from seattle to portland. witnesses scramble to rescue trapped survivors and help emergency crews get them to hospitals. >> some of them couldn't move. they had back injuries, broken legs or ankles and most of them had head trauma. >> reporter: an ntsb team is en route. a traumatic and dangerous scene as the morning commute turned deadly within seconds. this brangs back memories of a similar crash in philadelphia in may of 2018.
