also a nice day to lace up the skates. a live look at the blue cross river rink. a sunny and clear day at penns landing. if skating isn't for you, maybe it's time to hit the slopes. this is the view from the poconos. a couple people out there today. first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has a first look at the forecast. >> a mild r night tonight. >> yes, it's going to be a very mild night for this time of the year. we have had sunshine, much of the afternoon. after some clouds this morning, despite the clouds, temperature really shot up. there's a live view in wilmington. and it is unseasonably mild. 57 degrees in philadelphia. 58 in northeast philly. even allentown at 56. mount pocono at 46 degrees. skiers would like some cool er air and it's going to be coming

in here. today up to 58 degrees. tomorrow a pretty significant drop. high of 46. then it another drop going into thursday. high of only 42. below average, but that's only one day's worth before we start warming up again. friday, back up to 50 degrees. and saturday gets even warmer than that. quite a bit warmer as you see a little later. the temperature tonight, not dropping very much. we have mostly clear skies across the area. we'll go down into the 30s in many of the suburbs and lehigh valley. but that's not too cold for this time of the year. and we're starting off the day tomorrow in a fairly mild side for this time of the year. but things are going to be changing. we have frigid air that's going to be coming in from much of next week. we'll tell you just when it arrives. it could affect the christmas holiday too. the details and timing on that in just a few minutes.

it will be a smoother ride home for drivers who use the pennsylvania turnpike. a stretch of the highway is back open after a chain reaction crash shut it down during the morning rush. three tractor trailers and a car collided on the westbound side around 5:45. that crash sent two people to the hospital. learning more this afternoon about the dead ly amtrak derailment in washington state. investigators are looking into whether the engineer was distracted by the presence of an employee in training in the locomotive. we also know the train was going three times the speed limit when it plunged off the overpass and killed three people. keith jones is live in the breaking news center with the latest on the investigation. i know we're learning more about the victims. >> we have learned two of the victims are members of the rail passengers association. it's an edadvocacy group for trn passengers. crews lifted one of the train cars that crashed on to the interstate south of seattle. this is time olympics video.

the damaged cars were loaded on to flat bed trucks and driven away. a total of 13 of those train cars jumped the tracks. the speed limit on that curve where the accident took place is 30 miles per hour but investigators say the train's data recorder showed it was traveling 80 miles per hour. a couple who survived the crash said they are grateful they survived. >> a lot of tossing and squeezing and kind of got dark. i found myself on the floor. >> it's a blessing. try to live day-to-day. >> the couple are both recovering at home. investigators are planning to look at the cameras and another black box that could help with their work. live in the breaking news center, keith jones, nbc 10 news. this afternoon a burks county woman is in trouble after

she stabbed her roommate over candy. trace mitchell is facing aggravated assault after she stabbed her roommate and injured her leg. she was arguing with her while holding a knife. they started fighting and fell to the floor. that's when she was stab issbede in the leg. a shooting happened on objectixford street last night. family members were upstair when is they heard gunshots. they found the man blooeding on a couch in the basement. they don't know who was down there when he was shot. attorneys of the mayor of allentown want to hear secret recordings that show he was innocent. he's accused of accepting more than $150,000 in campaign contributions in exchange for a city business. the trial is scheduled to begin next month with jury selection in philadelphia. arizona senator john mccain says he's now feeling a lot better and looks forward to

coming back to washington after the holidays. the 81-year-old republican senator is battling brain cancer and went home to arizona for physical therapy and rehab at the mayo clinic there. he will miss the tax bill vote. he took to twitter to thank everyone for their support. the fbi is now part of the investigation into what caused a fire that knocked out power to the world's busiest airport in atlanta. there's no sign of anything connected to terrorism. the fire took out the airport's main power supply and backup electricity for 11 hours on sunday. operations are returning to normal today. half a dozen flights in or out of atlanta were cancelled. delta would reimburse travelers who needed to stay in hotels on sunday. going to southern california, firefighters say the potentially historic wildfire raging right now is almost half way contained. good weather conditions are helping them make some progress. officials say before that it fire is fully contained, it will

be the largest in the state's history. they expect to have it all under control by early january. this afternoon a moose lodge goes up in flames down at the shore. fire crews rushed the scene at the lodge in lower township. firefighters had the fire under control in minutes after it broke out after midnight. no one was hurt and officials say the fire is not suspicious. bicyclists in philadelphia are calling on the city to make their safety a priority. they formed this human chain to protect this bike lane on 13th street in center city this morning. that's the same area where a rider was hit by a truck friday morning. another rider was killed a few weeks ago in the same area. there are painted bike lanes, but they want city leaders toods more. students had to be moved to a different building after a water main broke inside their west philadelphia school. students were moved to parkway west high school for the rest of the day. it will be back open tomorrow.

a north hampton brewery is hopping into action to support a pennsylvania state. trooper who was shot in the line of duty. two rivers brewery released a new beer today in honor of corporal seth kelly. it's $6 a beer, $1 will go to the family to help with his recovery. kelly was shot after a traffic stop november 7th. he was released from the hospital earlier this month. the man accused of shooting him is in jail charged with attempted homicide. >> it takes a lot of courage. to get out this and do that job, we're honoring him to help pay for expenses for his injuries and to help him and his family out this time of year. >> if you're interested in supporting the cause, there's still time. the fundraiser runs from 5:00 until 8:00 tonight. shoppers in delaware got a tasty surprise courtesy of the

because it will be raining. it's 57 degrees. the average high is 44. so pretty warm. southwest wind helping to do that along with the sunshine. we're well into the 50s across pretty much the entire area. the jersey shore, we have a southwest wind, so it's barely 50 with the wind off delaware bay. cape may point at 51. some of the warm spots there. the ocean temperature in the mid-40s. a few clouds this morning. especially north philadelphia. and there's quite a bit of moisture down to the south. this is all going to arrive to the skpooes iteast and it's goi us to the south. so tomorrow we have sunshine across the entire area. but much cooler weather. nothing approaching 60 degrees like today. 43 in robinsville. 49 in longport. the only place that has a chance

of getting to 50 degrees. so over the next few days, the temperature is going down. upper 50s today. mid-40s tomorrow. low 40s thursday. then we start coming back on friday. we continue this dry weather pretty much for another few days. there's a possibility friday morning of a little bit of patchy light rain in the lehigh valleys. that's why we do neighborhood weather. some neighborhoods have a better chance of seeing some precipitation than others. we're able to show it to you with this type of system that we have. and at the jersey shore, you can see temperatures down farther and then going back up as we go into friday. but of course, it's the weekend. christmas holiday weekend. and big changes are coming in the weather pattern. we have an arctic front that's approaching. we have strong southwest winds coming in on saturday.

that could push the temperature to 60 or even above in parts of the area. but we have rain. that's a pretty wet front. on the other side of that front is winter. not just some snow, but there's some brutal, brutal arctic air behind that front. so this is going to be critical. there's saturday. now as we go to sunday morning, that front pretty much passes through. so we're going to be quite a bit cooler on sunday. not quite into the arctic air, but we may end up drying out on sunday. so sunday is quite a bit different than saturday. and then the front doesn't go too far. it may actually stall a little bit and some moisture behind it gives a chance at least of some snow. especially some light er snow ad

up to the north and west. there's christmas morning here. so at least we're in the ballpark. we got a chance. here's the forecast for saturday, sunday and monday. quite a difference from one day to the next. 60 degrees, warm and wet on saturday. temperatures drop sharply for sunday. pretty cloudy, most likely dry, just a slight chance of any kind of shower. and then much colder on christmas day. that's a high of 37 with a chance of a little light snow. it could start off the day with a little bit of light rain changing to light snow. then the frigid air comes in. so the real bitter cold comes in starting on tuesday. that's tuesday and into wednesday. and by thursday, we have a chance of some snow again.

we are uncovering new information about a deadly crash that's had investigators working for 24 hours now. today we learned three people in that suv were killed and also that police were chasing the car before it crashed. the suv crashed into a pole and caught fire in burlington county. this happened yesterday afternoon. nbc 10's cydney long is working on the story for us. you have been trying to sort out what happened here. what were you able to find out? >> reporter: we have been asking a number of questions to state police. we still don't know the names,

ages or relationship of those three victims killed upon impact when that suv hit this utility pole around lunchtime yesterday. but we do know they shouldn't have been in that vehicle in the first place. it's been 28 hours since the suspects wrapped the vehicle around this pole. crews worked to replace the pole and restore electricity to a nearby school. police gave up little information. we don't know the victims' identities. >> it's sad when people lose their lives. >> reporter: people in this rural town are talking and want some answers. >> i still don't know who the people were that stole the car. >> reporter: state police confirm the suv was stolen from the popular route 206, rough i 8 miles from what wr they crashed causing it to burst into flames. we know the suspects traveled north, but what's unclear is where they were is intercepted by state police and how fast

trauma doctors hosted a holiday event and showed people just how dangerous it is to get behind the wheel if you have been drinking. nearly 800 people died last december in drunk driving crashes around the country. special honors for a dog rescued from a puppy mill. today she got to be an honorary fire dog for a day at the fire department. the foster team started the v for victoria campaign to raise awareness for puppy mill dogs. doctors are out with a health warning this holiday season. it's the season for sniffles and coughing, but it could turn out your christmas tree is to blame for those symptoms. >> also caught up in the middle of a a chaotic scene at the mall. the wild clip capturing all kinds of attention this afternoon. protecting your privacy is, the latest facial recognition feature facebook is rolling out to stop unwanted victors from surfacing online.

. a small child gets caught up in a fight. seat boy in the stroller. watch as his mother swings him around so she can kick the woman as she walks away. as the woman comes after her, she leaves the child to get away. there he is in the corner. that child was not hurt. toys r us is weighing the option of closing at least 100 stores. this news comes after the company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in september. bloomberg reports they are considering closing stores in the face of weak holiday sales, down about 15% from last year. the center piece of your christmas spirit could be make ing you sick. expert says a third of people suffer from christmas tree syndrome. it's apparently a real thing when mold naturally grows on your tree. it can trigger a lot of symptoms like itchy nose, watery eyes, chest pains and coughing. the symptoms get worse when you

you set for kickoff on sunday. super bowl is a little more than six weeks away. the host city of minneapolis is scrambling to hire enough people to work the event. a group of philadelphia flyers young guns ditched helmets for santa hats to deliver toys to kids. nbc 10 at the salvation army in winfield heights for today's delivery. the toys were collected during the fliers recent home stand. santa spreading even more holiday cheer in northern liberty. he came down to visit the kids today at franky's world. a nonprofit that helps children with special health care needs.

and normally a system like this would be coming up here, but this is not a normal pattern. it's going to make a right tush and see some clouds during the day tomorrow. you can see kind of a mix of sun and clouds. a fair amount of 46. easton and allentown at 42. reading barely get up to 40 degrees. 49 in longport. there are a couple spots that could get close to 50. then it's cooler on thursday. warm back up on friday. dry all three days with one exception. friday morning and parts of the area we'll keep an eye on that. and elsewhere it is dry. we got lots of sunshine on thursday. that's going to be the coldest day of the week today. the warmest day of the week. now as we go into the christmas

weekend, winter will be returning. not so much on friday or saturday. here's a southwest wind ahead of the arctic front. so it's warm, but it's also going to be wet. especially in the poconos. skiers won't like the rain. then saturday night we may get some heavy rain as the front moves through. that it could lead to a drier day on sunday. cooler and then the front may stall allowing some moisture to ride up. so with less than a week away and at least a chance of some snow in parts of the area on christmas morning. 60 degrees on saturday. that's not very christmassy. it gets colder each day as we go through the holiday. and then it will get colder than that on tuesday as the core of

this frigid air starts moving in. tuesday and wednesday of next week and then we have a chance of seeing some snow as you'll see in a minute. so we could see some showers friday night, but especially on saturday it's wet. 60 degrees, that's warm. cooler on christmas eve. cold on christmas day with a chance, just a chance of some snow. now it's going to get really cold tuesday, wednesday and into thursday. that sets us up so any moisture that comes in later in the week would likely be snow. so that would be the time period where we would have a better chance of some disruptive type of snow when you're talking about starting off in the teens before a storm comes in. so again, towards the end of next week. you are running out of time if you want to get the packages and cards to where they are

if you haven't mailed by the end of today, you might want to pay extra for express service. this lady very patient with the long lines here. the postal workers are doing their best too. they keep reminding themselves at least it's not tax dead line day. >> the lines are the same. people tend to be a little happier when it's mass. tax day is a whole other ball game. >> reporter: back live here. the line goes actually out the door now. if mailing locally, you might be okay tomorrow morning. but after that a all bets are off unless you want to pay extra. they let me in the back of the post office and gave me the priority mail. i think i can mail whatever i want for any price. >> what you have in your hand is very valuable. you know how much people would pay for that? >> when you control the mail, you control information. newman said that on "seinfeld."
