if you look at the boards here, you can see flights pretty much on time. a couple minor delays, but mostly smooth sailing here at philadelphia international. today the sight isn't hordes of travelers, but those that completed their journey. today is expected to be the calm before a flurry of busy travel days at phl. but most of those traveling will do so the roads. more than 1 million people will drive more than 50 miles from home in philly and the five county surrounding region. >> travelers definite ly need t pack their patience. no matter how you are planning to get to your holiday destination, there will likely be increased traffic or congestion. >> reporter: holiday travel has seen year to year increases. aaa is projecting 201 to have the highest travel level since it started keeping records.

>> it's been a strong economy this year. people are willing to spend to travel. >> reporter: back at the airport, passengers will face suffer security screening as tsa is now requiring all electronic devices to be removed from carry on bags and individually scanned. we're told it's worth it. nationally more than 107 million americans will travel 50 miles or further from home. our first alert weather team will look at how your destination could ultimately delay some of your plans. we're live, mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. speaking of first alert weather, let's bring in meteorologist steve sosna. he's checking the latest conditions in your travel forecast. how is it shaping up there? >> 107 million people out there and jim rosenfield will be one of them on saturday.

it will not be that bad across our area over the weekend. but there will be certain spots that will have some inconveniences. we take you from the airports to the rails. this is 30th street station. this is probably your best option here as there won't be any delays here. airport delays, get out of town now. it does look like there will be some showers on saturday and also the potential for some snow showers sunday night. but again it's the timing of this that i think works out in are convenient for the high travel period. so saturday early in the morning, we're look iing at showers coming through here. it's just waves of showers, meaning there will be plenty of dry breaks in between. the steadiest of the round comes in saturday nieght. and then we may see this disturbance come through sunday night. so if you're headed out on to the roads, it looks like

saturday into sunday night, that's your worst travel period. it's not even going to be that bad. the rails should stay in excellent conditions all the way through. >> it is the first day of winter. temperatures in the 40s today as we take a live look at the blue cross river rink with the skaters out there. here's a look at conditions along the shore. in cape may wrap uptight if you're heading out tonight because it's going to be chilly. that's a beautiful sunset right there. >> you have just a few days left to finish the last-minute holiday shopping. nbc 10 was there as shoppers hit the outlets in south jersey. coats and scarves and gloves and hats were all out along with the shopping bags. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here. he's tracking the latest conditions for your neighborhood. >> things are pretty quiet tonight and into tomorrow. we're going to see that temperature go up. we're starting to see a few high clouds around. that's one of the places that

has the best chance of seeing a little bit of snow on christmas eve. it's 40 degrees in philadelphia. down to 33 in pottstown. and in millville, 36 in dover, wildwood, allentown, reading, not much wind though. so there's no windchill that makes it feel colder than that. you can see some of these kwlouds zipping across the eye sky. that made for the extra nice-looking sunset. more clouds pack to the west. we're not going to be seeing a lot of sunshine during the day tomorrow. we're also not seeing much more of a temperature drop as we go through the night tonight. it will be chilly when you get up in the morning. but not brutally cold. it's not going to be especially windy. then we get into the 50s tomorrow. and near 60 on saturday. steve will be back to tell you about the dramatic changes coming later in the weekend and next week, coming up.

mason at the time was working as a paramedic for chester county hospital. a judge is employed by jefferson hospital. e he no longer works there. mason has worked as a flight paramedic. he told a judge he wanted to be a flight paramedic just like son and want. ed to learn from him. it was in august the teen told a judge during one of the ride alongs he fell asleep and awoke to mason touching him below the belt. he used sexually explicit language. the teen told a judge he acted like nothing happened and waited to report the assault because he feared he would harm him if he confronted him when it happened. the lawyer said the teen made it all up. >> are you concerned with other people out there? >> i'm not a little bit concerned that there are alleged victims. >> reporter: police say they are. >> you did a broadcast and since then we have received four calls from victims. >> reporter: investigators say the callers claim similar assaults happened in other towns and referred the cases to police in those towns. >> if people have had contact

with mr. mason, call your local police department or the jurisdiction where the incident took place. we need to get child pret tors off the street. >> there's enough evidence for mason to stand trial on indecent assault and corruption charges and we have learned of a 2011 police report in which a 17-year-old claimed that mason touched him inappropriately. no charges were file ued in the case, but they will be talking to investigators in bucks county. right now, philadelphia police are looking for three thieves who broke into a pharmacy and took a large stash of prescription drugs. thieves got into the back-door of the pharmacy last week. they broke open a lock ed shelf and got away with the goods. they drove off in what appears to be a silver jeep cherokee. police in camden need your help to identify three suspects involved in a shooting that happened monday night.

this is surveillance video of the suspects as they left the scene. church in bethlehem forced to close stores because of a water main break. the break happened yesterday and trinity had to shut its offices and the soup kitchen for a few days. the water is back on, but there's a 48-hour boil water notice. it's now rescheduled. the church officials said they expect to be back serving hot meals on monday and church will be filled come christmas dinner late next week. they are expecting 250 people. joe biden drew huge crowds at a barnes & noble in delaware today. the line wrapped around the side of the store in north wilmington. he was signing copies of his

republicans in congress are basking in the glow of the first legislative victory under president trump. republican members of congress gathered for a a tax bill enrollment ceremony. the bill was signed by house speaker paul ryan and senate finance committee chairman. it's the final step before

sending the legislation to president trump. the big win is is being overshadowed by the looming government shutdown. the president tweeted out a message to keep the momentum going and within the hour the house passed a short-term resolution. the bill now goes to the senate, which is expected to consider it later today. >> no sneaky things, just a continuing lugs to get us through this moment into next year. it's as clean and simple as possible. >> if approved, the bill would keep things running through january 19th. new at 5:00, we're hearing from a local lawmaker who opposed the tax plan. he says while the bill may help americans now, it has devastating effects down the road. >> it will give a short-term tax break to many americans. the problem is the long-term. because in the long-term, the tax breaks that are permanent are tax breaks for the wealthiest americans and the most profitable companies. by the end of the next ten years, a majority of americans

will see their taxes raised, not lowered by this bill. >> new york senator chuck schumer is also speaking out today. the top democrat says his party would not completely replace the bill should they take control of congress in the 2018 elections. >> i would just say this. child tax credit, we propose a bigger one. we wouldn't repeal what they did. we would try to make it better. >> as far as the government shutdown k nan shutdown, nancy pelosi says they control the house. they control the senate. they have the signature in the white house. minnesota senator al franken plans to officially resign on january 2nd. franken announce he would leave his seat in the coming weeks amid-multiple allegations of misconduct. he apologized for his actions, but said he didn't remember some of the intersections in the same way his accusers did. minnesota's democratic lieutenant governor was

one being christmas early on in the morning. but a better shot of snow coming up here later next week. and the high confidence exists for some numbing cold by the time we get to the second part of next week. let's get on the roller coaster, if you will. 52 degrees for tomorrow. we're back up. 60 on saturday. now the lehigh valley probably won't escape the 40s on saturday afternoon. that's the one area that stays chilly. we really start to slice the temperature down by monday and tuesday of next week. that also comes packaged with some wind. it will feel colder. highs today, this is exactly what you would expect on the first day of winter. 42 in philadelphia. 31 in the poconos. and temperatures tonight won't cool off drastically. we're looking at lows tonight in the 30s. right now, it's 40 in philadelphia. 36 in wilmington. this is from the top of the

building in allentown. it's lit appropriately in christmas colors. it should be a nice night in the lehigh valley. you are in the mid- to upper 30s as well. so overnight lows tonight will range from the upper 20s north and west to the lower 30s here in center city. in the suburbs, much of the same. ing your morning below freezing, but end iing in the upper 40s. without much wind, it will feel comfortable in the afternoon hours. lehigh valley into. the tomorrow afternoon. delaware and new jersey, you are the warm spots tomorrow. you'll be in the lower 50s. the clouds will give way to a few breaks of sunshine. so not a whole lot happening on

a driver crashed into a crowd in australia. police are saying this was not terror related. it was no accident either. investigators say the man deliberately drove his van into pedestrians in melbourne. 19 people were injured. police know the driver. he has a history of drug use and mental health issues. >> very scary. everything is delayed on the trains. people are late to work. people can't get home and see their families all because of one person. this is terrible. it shouldn't happen. >> one witness said the driver made no attempt to brake or swerve. new details about the wildfires burning in california as firefighters continue to spray water on hot spots. winds are expected to pick up and cause even more problems northwest of los angeles. about 18,000 homes are still in the danger zone. the thomas fire is now the second largest in state history.

neighbors and business owners. aundrea cline-thomas is there live as crews continue to make repairs right now. we know this is a business. si time of year and you spoke to some frustrated people today. >> reporter: because it's a huge inconvenience. take a look. there's still a gaping hole. what you see there is the old water main that's being replaced right now. but the water department was handing out these letters apologizing to people, residents and businesses for this inconvenience. they also say a permanent fix is on the way. today drilling was added to the normal sound track of the hustle and bustle in and around the square. >> i'll ask the car can't be taken anywhere near this place. it's a traffic nightmare. >> 18th street between walnut and spruce have been closed since yesterday evening when the

water department was first ca called to address a water main break. >> there were some difficulties with finding a location of the main. the problems height is 182 years old. >> replace as much as they can today to hopefully we present this from happening going forward. a new pipe is being installed to address the problem. residents and businesses are inconvenienced. the park building did not have water. a spokesperson told me they hope to open for dinner. >> i feel badly for them around the holidays to be closed. >> down the street at the market, this employee says they are feeling the effects too when businesses are trying to cash in on the holiday rush. >> the traffic is bare. we can't get our deliveries in. hurting our business.

i'll have that coming up. >> don't forget to download the free nbc 10 app. you can get the forecast tr your neighborhood 24/. all you have to do is tap the app. a philadelphia pawnshop worker fights back when a man comes in to rob the store. video shows a man walking into the pawnshop last month and pulling a gun from his waistband. the person working behind the counter fought back. the two struggle and then the robber ran out. he did get away with some money. a home at the jersey shore goes up in flames overnight causing thousands of dollars in damage. flames were shooting from the roof of this home in west wildwood. the homeowners got out safely, but they needed to rescue the family dog. the fire caused $200,000 in damage and also caused damage to the homes next door. around this time during the holidays, it's important to remember the consequences of drinking and driving. there's a new project to push

authorities in south carolina are looking for three suspects who rammed a stolen truck into a sports store. in the security camera video, you can see the truck ramming

some of the merchandise. moments later, three suspects each leave the sports shop with a motorcycle. >> life expectancy in the u.s. has dropped for the second year in a row. government data shows the average life span is now 78.6 years. that's a slight decline from 78. .7 the previous year. researchers say the opioid epidemic is largely to blame. deaths rose by 21%. women can still expect to live longer than men. tomatoes and apple will benefit former smokers diet. the decline in lung function was slower as long as they regularly consumed those foods. the protective effects was found when study participants ate two or more fresh tomatoes a day or three portions of fresh fruits a day. spread iing holiday cheer i
