fire and ice. neighbors deal with two dangers forced them out into the bitter cold. the cost of the cold. the experts show us what to avoid in inside your home. as the deep freeze settles in. a pennsylvania city gets slammed with five feet of snow. and it still hasn't stopped. right now at 11 the escaping the flames the fire forced neighbors have their homes into the cold good evening i'm keith jones. in brook haven. fortunately everyone got out safely. brandon hudson is live on the scene. where are the neighbors tonight?

>> the families who lost their apartments are staying with relatives, friends and nearby community center. the apartment is about 60 yard behind us. we met a man who escaped his third floor apartment building minutes before it was destroyed. >> reporter: from the air in the ground. you can see flames shooting from an apartment building in brook haven. a fire tore through 18 apartments including jim. >> after the police got me out i saw flames coming up through the middle. top floor. >> reporter: he saved a painting. an art portfolio and pet bird. everything else is gone. >> my wallet is in there. my keys to the car is in there. everything i have. my life's worth. >> one group of firefighters saved a family of three trapped on the third floor. >> they were brought down a

ladder. 35 foot from the third floor. >> these two neighbors were feet away from the building. concerned the fire would spread. >> you could feel the heat. by the door. i hit the door and the smoke. we could smell the smoke. >> reporter: once the fire was out, firefighters combed through the smoky haze of the damaged parmtd. furniture and other belongings were thrown out. neighbors watched covered in blankets. crews also fought the elements. a salt truck was used on the icy sidewalk and parking lot. >> we saw the fire marshall taking pictures of the apartment. assistant fire chief can crew will return tomorrow to find out how the fire started and where it happened in the apartment building. live in brook haven burro. >> thank you. in the deep freeze could last up to ten days. let's talk to meteorologist

glenn schwartz. >> i think we may see even colder weather at the beginning of an ex week. than this week. and this week is going to be the coldest weather of the season. so far it's 27 in philadelphia. 21, 23 coats ville. 20 vine land. 22 trent. that's cold enough. look to the west. it's 16 pittsburg. one in chicago. this air is headed in our direction. look at the wind arrows. coming rigt at us. and up in the northern plays, bismarck is 19 below 0. that's the temperature. not the feels like. the feels like around here, 7 in redding and nine in allen town. that's plenty cold enough. we're getting a piece of the bismarck and canada chill. it is certainly going to be around for a while. we have 61 on saturday. remember that? we got spoiled here.

18 year-old. it happened in german town the victim was shot once in the stomach and died. twice in the neck. police found a weapon. so far no arrests. tonight a robbery suspect in critical condition after being chased and shot by police in west philadelphia. the chase ended after the suspec crashed into a parked car. at 49th and walnut. police opened foir after he refused to cooperate and reached for his waistband. waist. the police have to think you're going for something. i would have shot him too. >> the chase began after the suspect robbed a deli. we have new information tonight on what led up to a deadly stand off. the man who killed his mother and shot himself wasn't even supposed to have guns. the stand off lasted for hours on friday. it was over police found two rifles and a shotgun near his

body. investigators believe he got the weapons from his father. philadelphia is suing the department of defense. the lawsuit claims the military failed to report service members who are disqualified from owning guns. the city argues that allowed former air force member to buy a rifle and kill 26 people in inside a church in texas last month. kelly has been convicted of assaulting family members several years earlier. and shouldn't have been allowed to purchase a gun. the air force has admitted it failed to alert the fbi about kelly's criminal history. and found other examples too. pentagon says it will not comment on the lawsuit. a vandalism spree. has several center city businesses cleaning up tonight. police say someone used rocks from a nearby construction site to break the windows on nine stores. one person is in custody. a food bank was the victim

friday afternoon gets over 20. so the worst of the cold it's over. friday morning. then the moisture comes in. and that provides us with the chance for some snow. not so much friday afternoon. or night. but saturday and this is not a coastal storm. does not seem to have a lot of potential. to be something big. it's on the weekend. it would be on saturday. and so that's something we obviously need to follow closely. that would be the day. you could see nobody gets a 30 degrees over the weekend. look at the highs on sunday. a high of 18. in lee high valley. a high of 18. for the eagles game, we're getting into the low 20s. feeling like 12 in the middle of the game. that is incredibly cold. and look how long this lasts. there's the chance for snow on saturday. generally dry pattern for a
