for this house fire. as they did, their water turned to ice once it hit the ground. they had to put down salt to keep from slipping. a water main burst in may fair section. about 50 homes were left without water and the water department hopes to have everything fixed by tonight. it also says the break was likely caused by the frigid cold. today's bone chilling commute is longer than expected for some septa riders. service was suspend ed on the chestnut hill east line because of power problems. people have had no choice but to shiver it out while crews made repairs. the cold temperatures caused the power problems. a live look at eighth and market. be glad you're inside watching nbc 10 because the people there are wishing they were somewhere warmer. >> meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has more on the first alert for this cold, which you predicted.

you told us about it in your first alert forecast. >> we have clear skies now. the wind is starting to diminish. that's going to allow the temperatures to drop sharply. and just a few hours, our first alert continues through 8:00 a.m. for the entire area in the poconos and lehigh valley. but we're likely to issue another first alert for sunday and monday. just want to give you a heads up because that's a holiday. and we'll have less winds during the night tonight. so we'll be more looking at the actual temperatures than the feels like temperatures. right now it's 21 degrees. that's as warm as it's gotten all day. hasn't gotten out of the teens in areas north and west. and it is just by the rer cold. we still have enough wind to make it feel like the single digits. it's not felt any better than this all day. we have been telling you about this that it was going to be

do when he lived. >> he was a good rapper. that was his favorite thing to do. >> reporter: the district attorney says they have multiple investigative teams working on the case. they are encouraging anyone to come forward sooner rather than later and be treated as a witness. nbc 10 news. this just in. police say the 11-year-old girl who died during a scleepover yesterday pass ed away from natural causes. a neighbor found the girl unresponsive at a home along angus place in northeast philadelphia. the girl was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. police say the criminal investigation is closed and that it will be up to a medical examiner to try to determine what led to the girl's death. the deep freeze posed an extra challenge for philadelphia firefighters battling a fire in an abandoned church overnight. the flames broke out in our lord parish. the water used to fight the

flames quickly turned to ice. one firefighter suffered a minor injury. the vacant church has become a gathering place for the homeless. they were moved to another building. new details about a fire that burned last night. earlier this morning we learned a woman was found dead inside her apartment. the red cross is working with nearly three dozen other neighbors to report. there's a new warning from the irs that prepaying your property taxes might not help on your tax returns. some homeowners are rushing to prepay 2018 property taxes before a law signed by president trump's tax cut bill takes effect. but. the new warning from the irs says they are only deductible if the property taxes are both assessed and paid in 2014. it caps the local taxes you can deduct from your federal return at $10,000. that means if people pay more

than that in property taxes, you can benefit by paying more tax in 2017 when there's no limit on that deduction. but it puts people in new jersey at a disadvantage because they have the highest property taxes in the nation. lauren mayk found a line of people showing up to prepay at a tax office in camden county. a live report new on nbc 10 news at 5:00. some delaware supermarket workers will see an immediate benefit from this tax cut bill. a company that owns six shoprites is is handing out $150 bonuses. they will go to 1,000 workers. a number of large companies have announced lans to share part of their tax wind fal by giving one-time bonuses. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with the second shooting involving police in just days. investigators say officers shot and killed a man last night after he drove off from a traffic stop.

license plates matched what witnesses saw at the scene of a murder here on atlantic street in port richmond last thursday. police tell us that the plain clothes officered approached the honda and sped off hitting one of the officers and slamming into parked cars. the car came to a rest about a block away. the driver jumped out. >> after repeated commands to show his hands, he makes an abrupt movement and officer fires one shot. >> reporter: that one bullet struck the man in the head and he died at einstein medical center. but he was not connected to the homicide here on atlantic street. the honda he was driving was registered in someone else's name. what's more, police did not find a. weapon either on the street or in the car and a man was not wanted for any serious crime. >> that this particular point he didn't have any outstanding

warrants or any felonious offenses. >> police say the department now wants a transparent and comprehensive investigation into all of this. it will be led by the district attorney's office. a female passenger was also in that honda not seriously injured and the undercover officer who was injured last night is expected to be okay. we're live in the breaking news center, george spencer, nbc 10 news. as we said before, this is the second police-involved shooting within days in philadelphia. on tuesday police shot a man after he rob bed a deli in west philadelphia. he led police on a chase before crashing near 49th and walnut. they opened fire after he refused to cooperate and reached for his waistband. police say they are still zirge isearching for a gun. new details in the investigation into the shooting in harrisburg. the gunman had no known links to terrorism. police killed the man last

friday after he shot at police at three locations in harrisburg. there were a number of gunshots fired near the capitol prosecutors say there's no evidence the gunman had any grudge against the police. >> we believe he acted alone. and we believe there's no further threat. >> friends and family told police he was depressed about money problems and lack of contact with his family. new development this afternoon in the senate election in alabama that captured the country's attention. a state board met today and officially certified doug jones the winner of the december 12th election. jones is the first democrat to win a senate seat since 1992. republicans holding a two-vote majority, his victory will have major consequences for president trump and his agenda. today's declaration came hours after roy moore filed a lawsuit

trying to stop alabama from certifying his opponent as the winner. moore faced allegations of sexual misconduct throughout the campaign. his attorney said there should be a fraud investigation, but election officials said they found no evidence of any fraud. a crime against humanity, that's what afghanistan's president is calling today's attack on a muslim cultural center in that country's capital. at least 41 people are dead, more than 80 others are wounded. suicide attackers stormed the cultural center and set off multiple bombs. scores of people gathered in the building to mark the an vers ri of the invasion in 1979. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. delaware firefighters will soon be using a universal signal to help them work together more quickly if a colleague is in trouble. a new policy calls for all 61 county fire companies in delaware and seven dispatch centers to use the same may day

a look at a fiery crash and a rescue that has a pair of police officers being hailed as heroes this afternoon. first the crash. the car with two teens inside slams into a pole on tuesday. the car flips over and spins around be before catching fire with the teens trapped inside. two officers sprung into action. body cam footage shows the officers putting their lives on the line to free the two teens after pulling the one teen to safety the officers return. they say they knew they could have been hurt, but instinct told them what they had to do. former miss america contestants who are the subject

a concerned mom made a startling discovery aftermenting to know what was in her child's glitter makeup kit. she says a lab found asbestos in her daughter's makeup kit made by claires. she works for a rhode island law firm and was worried about the makeup so she decided to do some investigating. 17 other makeup products also tested positive for the cause cancer-causing chemical. her daughter asked a heartbreaking question. >> her response was am i going to die?

20s. marshalton at 21. farther to the south it's 22. duey beach, that's the warmest places on our map right now. we have clouds moving in. that will prevent the temperature from dropping even more dramatically tonight. this little area of snow is not going to be affecting us. but this area in montana is going to be racing this way. it's call ed a clipper system. has limited moisture. it does look like it's going to be affecting us on saturday. through the night tonight, notice temperatures holding steady. then the wind diminishing a little bit. it won't feel quite as cold tomorrow morning as it does right now. tomorrow afternoon, temperatures are still not going anywhere. but at least it won't be windy. tomorrow night, temperatures not changing much. on saturday, here comes the snow. there's 9:00 or 9:30. the snow is starting.

the dark er the blue color, the heavier the snow. we're not seeing any dark blues with this. it's not pulling in atlantic moisture. it's possible as the system gets to the coast, it could strengthen a little bit and get more snow in ocean county and in atlantic city than we do in the inland areas. you see temperatures down to 20s. it's definitely snow. it will be blowing around in the wind. we're talking about a coating to perhaps as much as a couple inches. that's on. temperatures is less brutal then. sunday and it is brutal. temperatures are just incredible. lehigh valley is not going to get to 20 degrees. and it's also going to be pretty windy. that includes the eagles game. so it will be feeling like about 9:00 when the eagles kick off here. it's worse than what we saw for
