london. we have a first alert in effect from now through tomorrow morning's commute because of the dangerous cold blast. the brutal cold has the feels like temperatures around the single digits tonight. you're looking live at fwo of our cameras showing center city. it's even colder here is a live look at allentown where it's bone chilling for anyone outside. and right now septa is is trying to get back on track after the cold caused power problems for somes today. a live look at 30th street station. the power issues made some commutes longer than normal. we are bringing you live coverage of this dangerous cold tonight. rosemary connors is is live in east falls with how people are staying warm. let's begin with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we have more of this coming. maybe a bit of a break over the next couple days. it will be quite as brutal. but it's going to come back with a vengeance starting sunday.

still bringing in cold air. it's plenty cold to our west. we have the first alert continuing. it's going to be at its worst. lehigh valley, poconos are the worst. they will be issuing another first alert for sunday and monday. and then less wind tonight. plus more clouds will make it a little bit more tolerable than it would be otherwise. it's 19 degrees in philadelphia now. 14 in reading. 4 in mount pocono. and the feels like in single digits. you notice lancaster at 15. the wind has died down there. that's a good sign.

it's going to feel like this all night. tomorrow morning, it will be almost this cold. so we don't have major relief for awhile. we do have snow that's going to being in for the part of the weekend. we'll tell you how cold it's going to get early next week coming up. >> the dangerous cold is make ing the mummers question whether the parade can go on. the mummers organization says they met today to discuss what to do because of the weather. but they say a final decision won't be made until saturday. the city says they will keep monitoring the forecast. as of now, they are planning to have the parade january 1st. the new year's fireworks will go on. a live look at the river rink. a perfect spot to watch two fireworks shows. let's continue our team coverage of the dangerous cold now with rosemary connors. she joins us live in east falls. thankfully inside with some ways people are choosing to stay

warm. >> reporter: a bright spot to say the least in the cold weather. playing tennis is one way to stay warm. all week long kids have been attending a winter camp here legacy youth tennis. earlier today we visited another indoor facility where keeping the blood flow iing was the nam of the game. bundling up may be easier said than done in this blast of winter weather. thot much will keep you warm unless you keep moving. or perhaps climbing. >> the weather is frightful. a little too cold for me and when it first gets cold, you're like it's winter and then you're like, oh, it's winter. >> reporter: inside go vertical, a rock gym, there's barely any bite from the bitter temperatures outside. >> it's a big building and a little chilly, but as soon as you start climbing, people start shedding clothes and you warm right up.

>> it's nice and cool, but not as cold as outside. >> reporter: a haven athletes both beginner and experienced trying to stay warm and avoid cabin fever. >> we like to be active, but there's a lot you can't do outdoors when it's this cold. rock climbing indoors is where it's at for us. >> climbing is engaging for them. >> reporter: indoor rock climbing, indoor nis, just a few ways people are staying warm and staying active during these bitter cold months. another way this place is staying warm in addition to the body heat, they have some heaters here. not on at the moment, but earlier today and first thing in the morning, they were cranking. back to you. >> good to have those heaters going and find any activities inside. thank you for that. the jersey shore is feeling the bone chilling cold as well.

keep him safe. >> i was there the night it happened. it was tragic. i didn't know how to react so i dialled 911 and started crying. >> reporter: he and an older friend were planning on robbing some guys. the district attorney told us the same thing. he said or four guys pulled up in this car after arguing with the teen, someone shot him and they drove off. >> i said i wanted in and i said no, i didn't have a great feeling about it. my feelings kept me here. >> reporter: the district attorney says multiple teams are work on this case looking for the shooter. he encouraging anyone in that car last night to come forward and that be treated like a witness. nbc 10 news. philadelphia police have identify identified the man who officers shot and killed after a traffic stop last night. 25-year-old dennis plow don died at the hospital this morning. police told us plain clothes officers stopped him as he drove this 2013 hunn dyundai u. the car and license plate matched the scene of a murder

last thursday. but as the plain clothes officers approached, he sped off hitting one of the officers and slamming into parked cars. after repeated commands by the plain clothes officer to show his hands, he makes an abrupt movement and an officer fires one shot. >> officials acknowledged today he was unarmed and not connected to the atlantic street murder. the car he was driving was registered in someone else's name. this is the second police officer-involved shooting within days in philadelphia. on tuesday police shot a man after he robbed a deli in west philadelphia. he led police on a chase before crashing. police say they opened fire after he refused to cooperate and reached for his waist band. a tax scramble has people lined up to pay up. people were wait ing ing to pre

year's eve. >> i was told to find a warm spot if i'm going to be outside. here's the deal. with new year's day weather, last year it was in the 40s. the year before that it was 52. in 2014 the low was 25. we'll be lucky to make it up to that on sunday. >> when i get. off work at 7:30 at night, probably just hang around the house. >> reporter: although she hasn't made plans yet, philadelphia is expecting hundreds of thousands of people to enjoy the night in the city. cold weather and all.

>> i think people feel that they are just going to tough it out. people may linger. and they may decide to go from club to club to club. >> reporter: the mayor created a list of places hosting outdoor parties for new year's eve. this map shows places in center city and along the water front. the blue cross river rink is one location where people will ring in 2018 with two fireworks shows. he handles operations at the river rink, which includes maintenance of the 11 outdoor fire pits and the lodge, which uses heaters similar to what you'd see on a philadelphia eagles sideline. >> we do this with our heart and soul. we just don't do it just because. >> reporter: the river rink staff won't be the only ones working. the crews will be cranking out smore kits and hot chocolate. the cold weather this winter may help them surpass last year's sales. >> people have been wanting to get warm, go ice skating.

square now three days out from the ball drop. and we are expecting brutally cold conditions for the eagles and cowboys game on new year's eve. this is a live look inside lincoln financial field. fans will be freezing this sunday as will the players out there on the field. we are expecting some snow at the beginning of the holiday weekend. let's go to meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. light snow on saturday. >> that's right. if we get any kind of snow cover after that that will help the temperatures go lower. we could e get some more snow by the middle of next week. we're not going to be through this until the following weekend. for today we barely got into the 20s as brandon was saying. 18 in potstown. 19 in reading. a high of 7 in the poconos where it's 4 now. it's 14 in reading. but at least the wind has died.

17 in wilmington and several places with 18 degrees. and in the city of philadelphia itself, we have the 19 at the airport. but it's 17 in parkside. 18 degrees in parkwood. at this. we have some clouds that will help level the temperature tonight. this area of snow is breaking up already. that area is with a clipper system that's going to race into the area. it will bring some snow. the same kind of temperatures but with less wind. then the clouds come in friday and into saturday. here comes the snow. these generally lighter blue colors, the lighter is the

lighter snow. darker blue would indicate heavier snow. we're not talking about a strong system, but look at these temperatures. that means it's fluffy snow. it blows around in the wind. and would stick on any kind of untreated surface. as we go through the afternoon, we may see several hours of that snow could accumulate a little bit, a coating to perhaps up to 2 inches. maybe a little more in ocean county as the system intensifies offshore. and then on sunday, the temperatures are not getting out of the low 20s again. so for new year's weekend, we have some snow on saturday with bitter cold comes sunday. and monday. those are high temperatures. at night it's going to feel like the middle of the afternoon it's feeling like 9 and 10 and 7 for the eagles game.
