waiting for snow. when it hits your neighborhood, and how much could fall. staying warm. how people are planning to tough it out on a frigid knew years eve. and troubles. a lottery dispute that may have destroyed one friendship for good. right now at 11. cold as ice. this bitter blast isn't letting up. now we're going to add snow to the mix. good evening, i'm keith jones. that could lead to a slippery start for the week. let's get an update on the timing and totals for your neighborhood. >> this won't amount to a whole lot. because the ground is so cold it will stick. that's why we have a first alert

out for that. and also the dangerously cold weather that will follow. the snow starts five to 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. the cold lasts through tuesday at 8:00 a.m. we have coating to two inches of snow on saturday. slippery untreated surfaces and sub 0 windchills. even in the philadelphia area. if r new years eve and day. even worse than what we have seen so far. this is the area of snow it's coming through ohio, west virginia, it is now officially snowing in pennsylvania. and causing slippery conditions in and around the pittsburg area. as this snow moves in, it will quickly start to cause some slippery conditions because of the cold nature of the ground. it's not real heavy snow or else it would be a darker blue. it's a steady snow. once it starts it will be around for hours. and then start to taper off.

shortly after noon. and end last at the shore about 2, 3:00 in the afternoon. and nothing more than flurries after that. we're talking about a coating to two inches. but it's a fluffy snow. you'll be able to just brush it off. because the temperatures are so cold. 10 degrees right now. we'll talk about who's going to get how much snow and how cold it will get after that. coming up. >> before you start the weekend check in with nbc10 for the latest. on tomorrow's snoep. woel have updates on air at 5:00 a.m. you can track the snow for yourself any time on the app. the snow won't last long. but the cold is surely sticking around. for people planning to spend new years eve out doors. you'll need a game plan to stay warm. drew smith is live at the blue cross river rink. doesn't seem like the cold is keeping people away. >> not at all. there are people out here tonight.

cancelled. because of the frigid forecast. this cold weather certainly kept firefighters busy. we have seen fires break out all over the region. following the flames tonts live now in west oak lane. the cold weather can make a dangerous job even more difficult. >> yeah. we complain if you're oud for five or ten minutes. firefighters of course are answering the call no matter what. that can be said for tonight and throughout the entire day. we're on georgia and west aek lain. this is where they were about a half hour ago. upstairs you can see some of the damage. they were concentrating earlier. here's some of the stuff you were talking about. you can see the salt on the ground. that can cause slip and falls. they're very careful to get that down. tonight oo like you said the work continues in these tough conditions. >> i just saw smoke. didn't see much. >> reporter: it's a tiresome few days of relentless work in

extreme cold for firefighters in the area. tonight in west oak lane they rush over to. salt was a must during the deep freeze. relatives say smoke was billowing from the second floor. a family member who didn't want to be identified credits them for quick work. >> quick as i saw the smoke. they were coming down the street. >> reporter: the similar scene unfolded in chester county a few hours earlier. firefighters there also had to battle the harsh conditions for several hours. no one was home. but a dog didn't make it out alive. firefighters this morning balanced they safety with saving others. frigid conditions meant easier chances for slip and fall. today, firefighters admitted the weather was an issue. >> it hampers operation. it makes everybody work slower. we have frozen hose lines. frozen equipment.

>> you can see right here on the back of the car. some of the conditions that they're dealing with. it's kwkly frozen over. i can tell you in talking to the firefighters they have workers on city watch tonight. fire watch. and that means they come down city streets like this. they'll come over and salt down the roads to make it safe for residents. thank you. now to new video taken inside a century old apartment building in the bronx. where 12 people lost their lives. you can see hall ways now charred. after flames raced through here last night. investigators say the fire was accidently started by a 3 year-old boy playing with his mothers stove. the flames spread quickly and raced up the buildings stairwell. witnesses were horrified. >> even little kids. it's crazy. >> among the 12 victims were

five children. the search is on for a killer on the streets of chester. nbc10 at the intersection of west eight and lloyd street. a man of shot to death inside a car here around 7:30. it is the 29th murder in chester this year. philadelphia said to finish the year with more homicides than it's had in five years. so far this year 314 people have been killed in the city. 13% increase. and the highest number since 2012. police officials say violence related to the opioid crisis is contributing. the department says it will have 370 new officers on the street by september. the number of shootings, rapes and gun robbery has gone down. it's been 100 days since hurricane maria slammed into puerto rico. battering the island and destroying the grid.

the numb conditions get in the way of the festivities. as you can see there's a lot of hot chocolate and fire pits. to make it a little bit more bearable. visitors to chestnut hill were probably wishing the lights gave off heat. the holiday garden rail way. annual event wraps up this weekend. the display features 15 different colorful rail lines. tonight each line could have passed for the polar express for sure. we're adding some snow to the list. of all the things to deal with. >> we're just hours away from snow starting. and with the temperatures so cold, untreated surfaces will get slick very quickly. only 25 for a high in if i fe philadelphia. now down into the teens when you have temperatures like this in with snow.

it gets very fluffy. you won't need a shovel. you can get a brush or blow it away. it will be that fluffy. as it falls. and the temperatures in philadelphia itself. it's down to 12 in andorra. so this is not one of the cases where is it rain or snow? it's snow. and it's getting closer on the radar. coming into pennsylvania now. not a huge storm. we're not talking about potential big accumulation. but it's that temperature of the surfaces that is the main problem. 5:00 a.m. the snow is already starting. in delaware. chester county. also in burkes county and spreads across the area. quickly. by 8:00 it's snowing just about everywhere. once it starts it's a steady snow. for hours. that will let it accumulate.

the darker colors are the heavier snow. it's already starting to taper off before noon. in delaware. and it will be shortly after noon by 1 or 2:00. in philadelphia. it will be over. sdp it will be over everywhere by about 3:00. then that's it. nothing more than a couple flurries after that. how much snow the latest computer model showing a little bit of an increase. generally between one and two inches. locally a little bit higher. as it gets to the coast. a couple inches of snow is not the big deal. it's what it does. here's the temperature and feels like. for saturday it's cold. it's very cold. but it's not nearly as cold as sunday and monday. here's saturday night where it's starting to get frigid. single digit windchills. sunday morning below 0 in a good
