still getting colder. the brutal freeze hitting our entire region isn't letting up anytime soon. death investigation. one person is in custody after two women were found dead inside this south jersey home. and up in flames. a fire engulfed an apartment building as neighbors rushed out to save their lives. good evening. we've issued a fist alert tonight for the dangerous cold that's been sweeping across our entire area, and it is getting worse. here's a live look right now from boathouse row. you can see a part of the river is already freezing over with temperatures in the low 20s. skiing weather up in the poconos. this is live look with skiers

bracing the cold today to hit the slopes. it also means icy roads for drivers. here's a look at i-95 in south philadelphia. glen, you warned me this was going to happen. it is only getting colder. >> yeah, it's just starting to drop tonight as an arctic front comes through. and the front tonight for the entire area goes through monday, tuesday, all colder than it's been this whole season. wind chills will go as low as 20 below 0 in the poconos and 5 to 10 below in philadelphia, new jersey, and delaware at the coldest point of this cold spell. right now 21 degrees.

14 in coatesville, feels like 2 in lancaster, 5 in reading, and boy it is going to be cold for quite a while. only 22 tomorrow, and 19 on monday. 25 on tuesday. the average high is over 40 degrees. now, this is the way it's going to feel tomorrow in philadelphia. single digits at best during the day. the suburbs start off near 0 in the morning, even 10:00 a.m. it's pretty close to 0. and then it gets colder for new year's eve and new year's day, i'll give you those numbers coming up. >> drew, the city is getting ready for the mummers parade.

the focus is really on keeping people safe. >> reporter: absolutely. and even tonight there's concerns about ice where that snow has melted. if you take a look there are patches of ice around here. also you see heavy equipment, some gates all for the mummers ara parade, which is go for new year's day. and they're trying to make sure people are safe in the cold. a day that started by laying down a fresh coat of snow is now testing some people's limits as the sting of dropping temperatures is settling in. >> i'm basically feeling like i'm a little iciceicle. >> reporter: the scougal river is turning to sheets of ice. on dry land it's the gusts you have to watch out for. >> as long as you don't have

wind, you're good. >> reporter: the kids are holding up in these conditions. >> i don't think my kids get cold. she's wearing a t-shirt under neath that. >> reporter: now the mummers will get their chance to perform in one of the coldest parades in years. organizes voting 3 to 2 to hold the event after a debate with the string band. >> it got too cold way to quickly, way too strong. >> reporter: they're forecasting a frigid eagles win against the cowboys. >> we have enough supplies to make sure we're not frozen. >> reporter: and the city has opened a temporary warming shelter tonight in kensington. also if you're out along the mummers parade, you'll be seeing warming tents going up for use during the parade. >> the morning snow stuck to the roads catching many drivers off-guard. there were a lot of accidents, but this one was by far the

worse. ten people were taken to the hospital after this crash on i-76 west. the road was shutdown for at least two hours. tow truck drivers had all hands on deck. >> i put the tv on, and the station they showed a big crash and my phone has been ringing off the hook since. >> at least 30 cars are in the parking lot. they'll stay there until insurance companies come to look them over. >> you can use the nbc 10 app to track the bitter cold temperatures where you live. if you're happeneding out for new year's eve, be sure to check road conditions before you leave home. a deadly mystery tonight in south jersey. two women are dead and one person in custody. police were called to this home around 5:00. two women were found dead inside the home, ambulances and police cars swarmed the street. the camden county prosecutors

office says they were in the process of charging a suspect who was in custody. three people are in custody in connection with a high-speed chase that went through three states. the pursuit started in wilmington on friday when police say a car hit a police cruiser. well, the driver took off over the delaware memorial bridge over new jersey, and crossed into pennsylvania before returning to the garden state. three people were arrested and no one was hurt. next on nbc 10, engulfed in flames. a fire rips through an apartment as people rush to escape. and caught on camera. a police officer attacked by an unexpected guest and his body camera recorded the whole thing. hey, i'm john clark, and the sixers win without joel embiid tonight in denver. and an eagle will be making his nfl debut tomorrow. is he happy or angry after winning the fiesta bowl?

flames shot up from the windows of this high rise apartment building from manchester, england this morning. this video shows the flames as it engulfs several apartments. one person was taken to the hospital. police in new york answered the call for an unusual suspect. yesterday police responded to a report of a squirrel that had gotten inside a house and was eating cookies. body camera shows the squirrel going a bit nuts before lunging at an officer. officers were eventually able to corral the critter and released it back outside. firefighters had to battle not fire but ice during a rescue this morning. take a look. these are pictures of that rescue in oakland. firefighters carefully inched their way out to a hole in the ice that a dog had fallen through. well, at one time two of the firefighters were completely

submerged in the water. but look what they retrieved. a couple of neighbors called for help when they saw it while walking. the day was just right for a day of ice hockey. a scaled down version of a winter classic. these guys were out there for more than two hours. they did make sure, though, to layer up before they hit the ice. it'll be a freezing birds nest tomorrow for the eagles/cowboys regular season finale. if you're tailgating tomorrow, get ready to bundle up. nbc 10's first alert meteorologist glenn schwartz joins us now. it'll be a bone chilling new year's eve. >> new year's eve and new year's day and a day after that. and we've got your first alert through tuesday for all of this

cold, which is colder than anything we've seen before this month. as low as 20 below in the poconos, even in philadelphia 5 to 10 below 0 at the coldest point of this. today's high, 28 in philadelphia. got up to 30 in wilmington. some of that snow melted but now everything is freezing up, and watch out for icy spots in the morning. 16 in pottstown, 18 in reading, and in allentown. and elsewhere in berks county and lee high valley, 14 in fleet wood already, 17 in allentown, 17 degrees in easton. if you think that's bad, it feels like philadelphia is 9 degrees. 5 below in pittsburgh. 13 below in chicago. 25 below -- look at canada. 30 to 55 below 0.

some of that air headed in our direction, believe it or not. we're done with the snow and some places had more than others. atlantic city had more than anybody reported. hamilton had less than a inch, and philadelphia we ranged from less than a inch at the airport to 3.1 in northeast philly. what a contrast north to south across the area. and in the suburbs 3.4 in king of prussia, 1.8 in doylestown. and now we're suffering with the cold. tomorrow morning feels like 1 in philadelphia, below 0 elsewhere. in the middle of the afternoon where the eagles are playing, feels like 6 in philadelphia, 1 in reading and allentown. and then there's new year's eve.

11:00 p.m., 6 in philadelphia, 18 below in mount pokano. and 6:00 a.m. monday, just as you're getting ready for the mummers, 8 below in philadelphia, and even in the middle of the afternoon monday it's going to feel like it's in the single digits. monday night we're still single digits, and even tuesday morning below 0 again. 5 below in reading. and tuesday afternoon we're not warming up a whole lot either. that's why we've extended that first alert all the way through tuesday. and when the eagles are playing it's 19, 20 degrees but it's going to feel more like it's about 9 during the afternoon. and new year's eve, feeling like close to 0, perhaps a little bit below 0. by midnight 4 at 6:00.

tonight. as you're saying this is the link tonight. there's no snow in there. it's ready for tomorrow, but as you covered it it's going to be cold. quarterback sydney jones will make his nfl debut. this comes ninety months after he ruptured his akillies. and an nfl source tells me this will not affect his contract. he will be a restricted free agent after his deal. it's going to be good. 15 degrees game time tomorrow. nick foles did not play well during the temperatures friday night. it'll be good to see him break out of his cold streak. >> i think the big thing is don't worry about it, go play ball, stay in the rhythm, get in the zone.
