nbc10 news starts now. >> ringing in the new year, 2018 is less than an hour away. parts of the world including right here in philadelphia are already kicking off the celebrations in style. good evening, everyone.

i'm erin coleman. here's a live look at what will be the heart of it all at midnight. this is the blue cross river rink at pens landing. skaters are getting fired up for the fireworks show at midnight. a lot of people are celebrating inside as well on this cold new year's eve. this is a live look at xfinity live in south philadelphia as revellers really pack it in there to the party. nbc10 has team coverage from around the area. tim furlong is hanging out at pens landing. bruce is at sugar house casino getting ready for the fire works show. andrea is talking with the mummers about the parade. first let's begin with the bone chilling temperatures right now. tamme? >> it's awful. temperatures are pretty much in the single digits. i want to show you the feels like. this is the wind chill. it feels like 1 in philadelphia, minus 24 at mount pocono, minus

5 in atlantic city. if you're in wilmington, minus 1. it is only going to get colder tonight. so, i hope you're bundled up. tomorrow is going to be one of those bitterly cold dangerously cold days. we have a first alert in effect. we'll talk about that when i come back with your full forecast. right now my colleague tim furlong, he's down there at pens landing. i want to know how many layers of clothing you have on, tim. >> reporter: i have, tammie, i have layers upon layers upon layers. i was telling a colleague my under armour tights have slipped down, there is wind getting into plagss where i don't want wind to be at this time. i tell you what, if you're going to be outside for new year's eve, this is the place to do t. the blue cross river rink is as fun and festive as you can get. they have a big ice rink. there are also lots of plenty of nooks and crannies where you can sit by a fire pit. i want to spin spin around and you the lodge. they have lots of fire pits.

at midnight in an hour, you're going to want to come out here. we're going to have 8,000 pounds of fire works that are going to be fired from barges. it took a hundred hours to design and build the show. coming up at 11:50 we'll tell you how they tweaked it because of the cold temperatures. we'll tell you what national politician, national politician could have gone anywhere for new year's eve, but he chose to bring his family right here to philadelphia. he's here at the blue cross river rink tonight. now let's go up the river where my colleague is, drew scott. i hope you're warmer than i am. >> reporter: very warm in here. the music has started in here. everybody is having a great time-out here. on the dance floor, we're on the second floor of river house casino. it got started with a big dinner a few hours ago. we have some video to show you of the fireworks that began at 6:00. a whole night of events down here, and everybody is excited to usher in the new year. we talked to a few people.

the mummers will be wearing extra layers as they continue an annual tradition. they voted to continue with their new year's day parade despite the frigid temperatures. nbc10's andrea kline thomas explains and tells us how they're keeping warm. >> reporter: box trucks and props like these speed rangers line jfk boulevard. the mummers are ready to put on a show during their annual new year's day parade. the cold doesn't deter you? >> no, i actually went to the eagles game in the morning. that was cold right there.

>> reporter: the mummers voted the show must go on. >> make sure the hands and face are covered as many as possible. the instruments are the biggest concern. >> reporter: they tested their instruments one last time. this is his 46th year participating. he knows how brutal the frigid temperatures can be. >> back in the '70s there was a colder time. my horn froze twice. not once, but twice. to postpone due to safety of participants and spectators. more warmth will be added this year. mummers say they're not backing out. after all, they've been waiting all year for their moment to perform. >> it's a full 364 days of work leading up to one day. >> reporter: andre a kline thomas, nbc10 news. >> we saw the mummers getting ready. meteorologist is here. what is happening around the area. bone chilling is the way to call it. >> i call it dangerously cold.

wilmington, mount holly at 9, dover at 12. hears whap it feels like when you factor in the wind. it feels like 9 in blue belt. minus 4 in coats ville. minus 6 in allen town, minus 4 in mount pocono. mills ville 0, dover at 1. you go to wildwood it feels like 2, and minus 5 in atlantic city. the trend, look at this, it's not going anywhere, certainly not above freezing. wednesday we only make it into the mid and upper 20s. our doppler radar, everything is quiet. we have clear skies, so any warmth that there was is right out into the atmosphere. this is hour by hour where we're going. you're going to wake up to 7 in philadelphia. tomorrow morning 3 in redding, 10 in atlantic city. then it looks like tomorrow afternoon we make it into the mid and upper teens across the area. tuesday we make it into the low 20s. at least we're going in the right direction, right? with sunshine. we may get into the mid 20s on wednesday. thursday we're watching a coastal storm that could bring us snow if it stays offshore, no snow. if it tracks a little further

10 americans are dead after this plane crash in costa rica. the planae went down in a wood region. it crashed after noon shortly after taking off nearby. it was headed to san jose. the plane belonged to nature air. two crew members also died in the crash. no word yet on the cause. police in colorado are describing it as an ambush, a sheriff's deputy was killed and four other deputies hurt after a man opened fire in a denver apartment complex. police say they were called to the home for a domestic dispute. but as soon as the officers went inside, a man started shooting. one by one the officers went down. the man with the gun was shot and killed. >> this is sports desk brought to you by xfinity, x1 from xfinity will change the way you experience tv. >> hi, i'm amy fadool.
