the new year. >> she looks cold. taking a live look it feels like zero. >> now let's take that live look across penn's landing. ice skaters are wrapped up tight as they brave these extremely cold temperatures this evening. looks like fun, though. >> uh-huh. >> from the city to the coast, we can't say it enough, folks. make sure you're prepared when you're outside. dress in layers and cover all your skin. it's really important. good evening. i'm erin coleman. >> and i'm keith jones. we have team coverage of the arctic blast. dozens kicked off the new year's like you can't imagine. >> tammie souza has more on this first alert. >> maybe they wanted to stay warm because the ocean water is almost twice as warm as the air.

wear layers and no exposed skin this is what you need to know as you look at our frosty and chilly city out there. tonight, the temperatures will be below zero and 15 above. the feels-like is from zero to minus ten. limit your time outside and make sure you take care of your pets. i don't care if they have fur all over them, they are not used to this, just like we aren't. we have dangerous cold back at the end of the week. don't be surprised to see another warning issued for that. we're also going to look at the possibility of snow. some of us may be looking at a lot of snow. a big coastal storm is possible wednesday night and thursday. and right now it's just too early to tell exactly who might get what. we'll cover that in the full forecast. right now i want to show you the numbers. it's 18 right now in philadelphia. the

9 in pittsburgh. temperatures are slowly dropping under clear sky. 16 in allentown. we have 17 in wilmington and 17 for all of you in vineland and 17 in atlantic city and mt. holly at 17 with an 18 in trenton. tonight we'll be a tad warmer than last night and temperatures will be above zero. when i come back in a few minutes, we'll talk more about the cold but we'll take a much closer look at the possibility of snow as well. talk about a jump-start into the new year, dozens of dashed into the atlantic ocean for today's polar plunge. >> nbc 10's mig agauel martinez-valle is joining us from an icy, cold atlantic city. >> reporter: i don't know how they did it. they stripped down to their

bathing suits and ran into the water. they say this is something they did not want to miss. whether it's your first time -- >> i've been wanting to do it all my life. >> the temperatures are in the teens and it's taking some courage. >> i'm not going to beat the water. when the first toe hits the water, you know something. >> reporter: for david and deann, some of that courage was in liquid form but some of it was mental. >> like the guy said, it's a cleansing-type feeling. it's like you accomplished something. >> reporter: they joined dozens in the 27th annual atlantic city polar plunge. the yearly january 1st tradition was canceled in other towns but

atlantic city went ahead with the frozen fun. >> the biggest crowd that we've ever have. the few, the brave, the frozen. >> the worst part about it is a towel. >> reporter: the shocking cold means you can only heat up from here. and maybe not surprisingly, when people ran out of the ocean, they ran straight to that bar because they wanted to heat up with a few drinks and i can't say that i blamed them. >> you've got to cover up those ears, bud. you've got to run in there and get the heat for sure. >> i know. >> the mummers played their instruments and strutted down broad street despite the frigid temperatures. ♪ the extremely cold forecast has

our meteorologists have in the palm of your hand. sign up to get alerts sent to your phone. police in allentown are investigating their first homicide of the year. a double shooting killed one person and left another in critical condition. nbc 10 steven fisher is live. steven? >> reporter: this shooting happened not long after midnight. it took place inside a house during a new year's eve party. police are still searching for that shooter. >> a group of people were gathered and after the ball dropped, two people were shot, leaving one dead. >> you have two people starting off the year 40 minutes into the new year. >> reporter: a source claims they were here at the party and heard seven shots and then everyone started to run. a neighbor says this is happening far too often. >> i would very much like to see

a gun control law come into play where it's harder for people to get guns. >> reporter: in 2017, there were 17 homicides in allentown and the highest one-year total since 2008. 15 were due to gun violence. some are concerned that the city's violence is trending in the wrong direction. >> it's a sad shame. it's a sad statement for the state of the city and the area. >> reporter: and police tell us so far no arrests have been made. as for those two victims, so far their names have not yet been released. reporting live, steven fisher, nbc 10 news. a developing story out of monmouth county where a 16-year-old boy is accused of killing his family just before midnight last night. long branch police were called to the family's home after neighbors heard gunshots. when officers arrived, they found the boy's father, mother, sister and a family friend all

shot to death. the teen was taken into custody. a new mayor is in atlantic city. fred gillian was sworn in today. he says he's ready to get to work. >> first order of business is to sit down and figure out how our business is going to be crafted and learn what the economic situation is for our city and just really excited about 2018, a promising year for us all. outgoing mayor has taken a job as the new business administrator in toms river. new details about the leadership at the top of the miss america.

grechen carlson spent time at fox news and she sued then fox news chairman roger ailes claiming sexual harassment. carlson said, "honored to move this program forward with so many amazing volunteers." last month the leadership resigned because of vulgar language and fat shaming of former winners. it was leaked to "the huffington post" but hasn't been verified by nbc. m started off the new year on the right foot. literally. >> they didn't let the cold weather stop them from participating in a 5k put together by lifetime fitness for what they call commitment day. even though feels-like temperatures were in the single digits today, these folks knew

calling on officials to let the people march and demonstrate in peace. this started with small rallies over the country's economic issues but it's spread to a nationwide movement. protesters say they expected things to change after iran signed the nuclear deal but they are still frustrated with their government. >> well, it's been 100 days since hurricane maria ravaged puerto rico. the power authority says the system is generating at 70% of normal but there is no way of finding out how many people are actually getting power. that's because the system that measures that isn't working. the u.s. army corps of engineers say it will likely be may before the entire island gets its power back on. let's get a check of your frigid forecast right now. this is the delaware river. temperatures will dip into the teens and single digits tonight. in the poconos, much colder

with plenty of beautiful, beautiful glowing oranges. if you're in millville, it feels like 8. atlantic city, 4. we're going to see the numbers drop tonight. we'll continue to have a breeze. the first alert that we have in place should expire tomorrow morning. but we may be issuing another one for cold later in the week and before that we could be issuing one for snow. stay tuned on all of that. 16 in lehigh valley and 17 for delaware. 17 in south jersey. 17 along the jersey shore and philadelphia at 18 degrees. let's check the neighborhoods in the suburbs. in new hope, 15. millford counsel ship, 14. unionville, 15. oxford, 15. let's scoot over to philadelphia and check out the numbers there.

19 in pennsport. and fox chase, 18 and parkwood, 17. we're going to cool off pretty quickly and we'll be somewhere in that range of maybe zero to 15 degrees, zero being out towards the poconos and 15 closer to the city and the shore. let's move on to the potential of snow. doppler radar, everything is quiet. lake-effect snow is taking place and you don't see anything in place across canada. you probably think i'm nuts, right? watch what happens. this isn't one but all of the forecast models. it looks like we'll get a significant storm system that develops up the coastline wednesday and thursday. a couple of conditions will come together for this. the question is, do we get flurries or nothing at all? do we see this track so close that we all get rain?

that's it. the position is the question. not whether or not this is going to develop. but right now, most of the models put a square in the middle of snow. so we're going to have to watch this very closely. could be a shoveling event. the next 24 to 48 hours it looks like we're going to wake up around 10, 11 degrees in philadelphia. 23 and sunshine tomorrow. we go into wednesday where we see the mid-20s. here comes that system creeping across the bottom of the screen. and again, hopefully the models want to put us right in the snow pass so we'll have to see where this winds up. still going on thursday at it:00 in the afternoon. finally clearing out late. i need you to pay attention to this. two different forecast models. i don't think either one of them are correct but they are on opposite ends of the spectrum. 4 1/2 in rehoboth beach and atlantic city gets about 4 inches. this is the rapid precision

model. it says we get 15 in n philadelphia. 20 in dover and 9 in the poconos. stay tuned. this will change. these models are not etched in stone. but i just want you to know how much variability there is and this could be a big deal for some of us. 24 tomorrow. 31 on wednesday. 25 on thursday. watching for that coastal storm. bitter cold comes back friday and saturday. we don't make it above freezing until next monday and tuesday when the glorious 40s come back into the area. guys? >> i never thought i'd hear that. well, the cold weather is really causing a headache for drivers, too. aaa mid-atlantic says they responded to more than 2500 calls in the last two days alone in the philadelphia five-county region. more than half of those calls, you guessed it, they've been for dead batteries. officials are bracing for a busy day tomorrow when people get back to work and get back to school. well, a new year, new laws. divorcing can be difficult

overlooking new comcast technolo technology center in center city. this arctic blast is not going anywhere any time soon. this is a live look in allentown. temperatures will really take a dive tonight. right now it feels like zero in some parts of our region. >> tammie souza is here. she's tracking the very latest conditions. t tammie? >> this is dangerously cold temperatures. last night just before midnight was the coldest december temperature we've seen since 2004. that's just for december. january is typically a colder month. that let's you know how intensely cold this air mass is. right now in philadelphia, a beautiful night and the big moon should be out for you to enjoy through the window of your home where you're nice and warm and cozy. 18 degrees and the feels like is at 5 degrees. 17 in wilmington and the feels like is at 6. let's take a look around the region.

9 in pittsburgh. 14 in rochester. 11 in boston and 22 in d.c. temperatures are up just a little bit from where we were early this morning. almost everybody was down in single digits. in coastal, you're at 12. in wilmington, it's 17. dover, 19. wi wildwood, 18. comparable temperatures around the area. trenton is at 18 and 17 in vineland. for tonight, we're going to dig down into the single digits and low teens. 12 in philadelphia. 8 in coatesville. 10 at mt. holly. 14 for stone harbor. it's that windchill out there that is so intense. it's going to make you feel so uncomfortable. it feels like 5 in philadelphia. minus 5 in mt. pocono. millville, 8. we have a potential for big snow for some of us later this week. guys? >> tammie, we'll see you then.

families were forced out of their apartment after power outage and water main break. they left around 1:00 this morning. crews are still there trying to fix the problem. people braved the single digits in boston where hundreds traded their parkas for swimsuits. a lot of polar bear plunges were put on hold except in atlantic city. in ohio, no plunge because crews couldn't cut a hole in the ice over lake erie. that's cold. down road our nbc 10 app to get up to the date weather and traffic information. a plane crash in costa rica and several with connections to our area. >> mitch blacher has more.

>> those killed include a doctor who graduated with honors and a family of five including a teenager at the university of pennsylvania. the koes scosta rican governmen confirms this crash. five of the dead, members of the same family, a mother and father and three sons. >> inconceivable that a whole family should meet with such a disaster. among them, an 18-year-old, a freshman at the university of pennsylvania. today from a quiet penn campus, students react to the tough news. >> it's a reminder that we never know how much time we have. >> reporter: also posted on facebook, "we are very shocked and saddened to hear about the death of william steinberg and

his family. we still cannot believe that they died so unexpectedly. will was a wonderful person who pleased penn with his amazing smile every day. the steinberg family was on a private plane in costa rica. the public safety ministry also reports another family of bel air, florida, among those killed. husband and wife mitchell and leslie have roots in montgomery county. on the phone, a family member said they were still trying to register the loss. authorities worked into the night sorting through the wreckage. the plane is registered to koan airline that took off sunday heading to the capital. witnesses report seeing the plane flip in the air before slamming into the ground. now, according to the koes scos rican government, columbia university posted condolences for the weiss' daughter hanna.

very sad story. >> very sad. mitch blacher, thank you for that. county-by-county across our region, in burlington county, we're learning more about the pedestrian accident that left a woman dead last week in maple shade. the victim has been identified as kim jones of camden. she was killed just before midnight near waverly avenue. no charges have been filed. >> bucks county authorities say a driver overdosed prior to crashing into a home in levittown. the driver was unconscious when he left the road. the man inside the hall was injured in the crash. a family pet was killed after it escaped during the chaos and got hit by a car. charges are expected to be filed. a local high school band out of bucks county took some time

to smell the roses today on the other side of the country. the pennsbury marching band performed in pasadena. the long line was one of the 16 bands from around the world that marched in today's parade. and in camden county, this is the first baby delivery of the year. this baby was delivered 54 seconds after midnight. he's a healthy little boy, tipping the scales at 8 pounds, 4 ounces, measuring at 19.6 inches long. a temple university student will be on "the ellen show" tomorrow. >> take a look.

what's shaking there? you're at 14 degrees. let's go to walnut. and here's where we're going. when you wake up tomorrow morning in philadelphia, 10 and 13 degrees. the pennsylvania suburb, between 8 and 10 degrees. lehigh valley, again, between about 8 and 10 degrees. then we go out to delaware where you're between 9 and 12 degrees. the same for new jersey. jersey shore, a little warmer. you're going to be in those low to mid-teens. so the temperature trend is not recovering. take a look at where we're going. anything above freezing before thursday? no, we do not. we may not get above freezing until early next week. a lot of things have to factor in for that to happen. the doppler radar is quiet. a beautiful nice moon for you to

enjoy. lake-effect snow firing up across the great lakes. it's quiet along the coast of the u.s. what we'll see forming is a huge coastal storm. now, this thing will come together. watch the timeline not tomorrow but wednesday night. here we go. it's starting to come up the shore. the question is, does it stay pretty far offshore bringing us flurries or light snow? they are expecting some of that in new england. or is it so close and so far west that we see all rain? here's one of the favorite tracks. it really intensifies. that's because the center of low pressure is so intense and it's going to actually spread snow across the area. there's a very definite cutoff let's walk you through hour by hour. we'll look at the 20s in
