checking their cars this morning. not easy to get out of a warm car to pump gas. the bone chilling cold continues to impact our area. they will dismiss students because of an issue with heat at that school. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking this bitter cold and a nor'easter that will impact us as well, glenn. >> yes. this is the area to be hardest hit. this is in cape may. accumulating know is quite likely there. we have the first alert out for all of our new jersey counties. this may be expanded farther to the west as we watch new computer information come in to possibly include northern

delaware. this is wednesday 9:00 p.m. to thursday at noon. not a long-lasting storm but generally 3 to 6 inches, possibly more at the shore. there will be gusty winds with this. we have dry can goonditions acr the area right now. this is an extremely strong jet stream will have had this. this will dive down and join this off of the florida coast to create a massive ocean storm. here we are tomorrow morning and things are pretty quiet. watch what happens by tomorrow afternoon. starting to get snow in north

carolina. the heaviest precipitation is offshore. the strongest winds will be offsho offshore. it is such massive storm that much of the area could be impacted by that. if we still have wind and it feels like 1 in coatsville. we'll talk more about the snowfall totals and colder air than this. first comes the cold then comes the water main breaks. crews are repairing breaks all over the area. people in a number of km communities lost water pressure. they say thousands of people may

critical condition. another shooting in north l philadelphia let one man riddled with bullets. police say the bullets hit the man multiple times. the woman was inside the apartment that was hit but she was not hurt. two people are in the hospital after a shooting in german town. a woman and man were hit just before 2:00. the suspects then sped away in a car. >> happening right now the teenaged is the in a family massacre over the holiday weekend is facing a new jersey judge. they say he shot and killed his participants, sister and a family friend. law open fofrsment officials.

we are learning more about the victim of the shooting death. her and her older brother escaped. the gun was registered to some one in the family. they also say no one outside the family could have seen this coming. >> we don't have any history of calls to that home. >> and then he just opened fire on them. i don't know why. >> neighbors say the young man had special needs. >> more than 20 elected officials are being sworn into office. larry has just taken the oath of office as philadelphia's attorney. he wants to keep fewer people

fire officials believe this fire started on the ground floor and spread into the 12 apartments above. more than 200 firefighters rushed to save lives. 16 people were rescued. >> the injuries are all non-life threatening. there are 22 people so far that have been displaced. >> crews will be looking for cha caused the fire after all of the hot spots are put out. 12 people were killed in this fire when a toddler ru plwas pl

ice. this police officer outside dallas slipping on a highway has a car nearly slides into him. at least five people freezing to death across four states. polar plunges are a new year's day tradition. this came with a warning from organizers. a polar plunge had to be cancelled when they couldn't breakthrough the ice. some school kids did catch a lucky break today. dall at many schools the buses would not start because they have been

sitt sitting here for two weeks. an ocean storm will impact part of the area with some snow. we issued a first alert for areas most likely to see significant snow. this is northern delaware and maybe even some of the sur bubu. this is wednesday 9:00 p.m. to noon on thursday. in the alert area generally 3 to 6 inches as of now. it could change and more is possible at the shore. it has been so cold we'll be seeing that snow stick to untreated surfaces as well. 20 degrees in philadelphia. still a 13 miles per hour wind. it is still in the teens in many

of the sur roupdirounding areas. let's take a look at lehigh valley. we have places in the teens. reading is 19, fleetwood 18, allentown 17. white hall at 21. nazareth at 18, bethlehem at 17. it feels like 1 in lancaster, 4 in reading. we still have wind out there. for tomorrow this will be the warmest day of the week. some places could actually get to above the freezing mark. i have 34 after a low of 13.

wildwood and avalon at 34. decent amount of sunshine. nicest day of the week. we have moisture building off of florida combining with disturbances coming in from the west. here is the general picture. these white lines are intense. by wednesday flight the western edge of this is snow. normally a track that far out we wouldn't get anything. boston could end up with a couple of feet of snow plus blizzard conditions. it is really going to pound part of new england. as we go through the afternoon we have upper teens to low 20s.

temperatures not very pleasant. we don't drop down nearly as much. by tomorrow morning we have a few single digit numbers but not near zero. during the day it is dry and upper 20s to mid-30s. here comes the snow. that is wednesday night. you can see temperatures are a little marginal. we'll see that snow taper off. how much snow? this is probably in the middle of what our thinking is now. 1 to 3 inches in the philadelphia area. more on that coming up a little bit later. a new year, a fresh start. we'll tell you about an announcement on the today show.

simply smarter shopping. we spotted a couple of people walking around the frozen lake. now on top of the cold we could see snow. let's get right to glenn "hurricane" schwartz who is tracking it all, glenn. >> yeah. it's going to depend on where you are. in some cases if you get any snow at all it will be a very tricky one with a very tight contrast across the area. we have bright blue skies across the area right now. a huge ocean storm developing in the next day or so. our first alert covering all of our new jersey counties.

it may be expanding westward are later on today depending what it shows this afternoon. this is until noon on thursday. generally 3 to 6 inchesov of sn. it would stick on untreated surfaces. the wind will pick up with perhaps record-breaking cold. down to the south a very strong jet stream here. we have a developing storm over the bahamas. it will be combined with this moving down from the middle of the country to create this massive coastal storm. it will generally track too far to the east. this is an unusually large

officials respearen't sure what caused the outage. >> the safist year on record for aviation. he has been very strict and the good news is there were zero deaths reported last year. they had no accidents or deaths last year. by comparison there were 16 accidents in 2016. airline deaths have dropped drastically other the last 20 years. former miss america is taking over the reigns after an e-mail scandal. she was miss america 1989 has been named the organization's chairwoman. the derogatory and sexist e-mails were leaked to the huffington post. late last month three board members resigned.
