right now 13 states from as far south as florida to massachusetts are under a winter storm warning. that's why we've issued a first alert through sunday morning. good evening, i'm keith jones. >> and i'm denise nakano. several schools have cancelled or delayed classes tomorrow. we have that information running at the bottom of your screen. and you're looking live at first alert radar. this winter storm system will hit our region tonight. temperatures will drop to levels not felt in decades. now, this is a live picture from south carolina. check out the snow already coming down in charleston. this is the same system heading our way. taking a live look now at camden. the winter storm will bring hurricane-force winds to some neighborhoods. >> this is the calm before the storm. for now people are bundled up, enjoying themselves on the steps of the philadelphia museum of art. up north meanwhile, the view at camelback mountain resort in the poconos, you see the skiers there hitting the slopes just hours before the nor'easter moves in.
5:01 pm
we have a team of journalists and meteorologists across our region covering every angle of this storm to keep you prepared. >> first we begin with nbc 10 chief meteorologist tammy souza. she is tracking the storm's timing and the snow totals neighborhood by neighborhood. >> we've got you covered. we'll start with the first alert. the entire area will be looking at snow. everybody will get snow, some of us more than others. we do have a blizzard warning that has been issued for southern delaware and the jersey shore. that's where you'll see the highest winds and incidentally the highest snow totals so you're going to have a lot of blowing and drifting there. this is 9:00 tonight through 7:00 tomorrow night. probably philadelphia area sometime between 11:00 tonight and 1:00 in the morning. in delaware a little before 9:00 but it will pick up steam and should exit the area by 7:00 tomorrow night. then what we're watching for is high winds to come in behind it. so heavy snow followed by high winds. now, the hurricane-force winds are offshore. they're not over our neighborhood. this storm is intensifying so the center will feel like a
5:02 pm
hurricane with hurricane-force winds. our neighborhoods are going to feel tropical storm-force winds between 30 and 50 miles an hour. the morning commute will be downright dangerous with blowing and drifting and everything that falls will freeze because the ground is frozen and we're below freezing. then we get this arctic blast coming in after the storm of . e let me show you what's going on. the jersey shore and sussex county here in the southern part of delaware, that's where the blizzard warning is in effect. everything you see in the light purple is a winter storm warning so that's the rest of south jersey. the central and northern portions of delaware, alsoless lower pennsylvania suburbs. winter storm warning there. to the north of that we are looking at winter storm watches. that's where lesser amounts of snow are expected to fall. again, we could start to see southern delaware feeling the flakes in the next couple of hours. glenn, you've got the totals for southern delaware and new jersey. >> yeah, tammy, it's one of those backwards storms, as we
5:03 pm
call them, where southern and eastern portions of the area get the most snow and areas north and west get the least amount of snow. which is kind of backward, because normally places like reading and allentown will get a lot more than the jersey shore. but in this case we're talking 8 to 10 inches. locally higher from sussex county, delaware, through cape may county, atlantic county, ocean county. the bulk of the storm, 4 to 8 inches across the i-95 area and then it drops off as we head toward the north and west. now, let's get a little more specific into our computer models showing close to 10 inches in cape may and also atlantic city, hammenton, vineland, morris river, bridgeton and then it really drops down as you head closer to i-95. about 5 inches in south harrison. now, as we head into delaware,
5:04 pm
that's the other area that's going to get hit pretty hard with this. some areas could get close to 10 inches of snow out of it. that would be more likely in sussex county. we have a wind that will come off of delaware bay, and that might add to the snowfall in places like lewis, delaware, even georgetown getting some of that bay effect. but as we go farther north in delaware, lesser amounts, 6.5 in dover and about 4 inches in middletown. we'll take a look at more neighborhoods a little later. >> glenn, thank you. as we mentioned, there's a blizzard warning for the jersey shore and delaware beaches. those areas are expected to get slammed. nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong joins us live in lewis. >> tim, you've spoke to people who are ready for this nor'easter. >> reporter: yeah. the wind is kicking up and it's gotten a lot colder here.
5:05 pm
in delaware, they're getting ready. here's the thing, they prepare for each nor'easter the day after the last nor'easter. at this point they're pretty much ready for whatever is going to hit but the threat of the nor'easter combined with the ice already here in the delaware bay built up over the last few days, that means the cape may lew lewis ferry after tonight will be shut down. this weather we're getting is for the dogs. actually it's not for most dogs, and that's why the dogtopia doggy day care has extra friends indoors with them today. >> nice and heated, plenty of access to water all day, blankets, lots of love from the staff. >> reporter: humans need extra care too. the code purple flag is flying. they usually let the homeless sleep here and leave in the morning but with the snow and intense cold, this shelter will let folks stay much longer than usual. on the roads, crews have been pretreating the highways for whatever falls. it looks like the southern third of the state will be hit the
5:06 pm
hardest. these streets won't look like this tomorrow morning. parts of the delaware bay and other inland waterways are already iced over. too dangerous to walk on. >> that's unbelievable that this is frozen. i didn't know this kind of water would freeze. >> reporter: yeah, it sure can. you can see the ice there on the bay. the guy holding the camera, augie, my photographer, will take the last ferry ride back to new jersey tonight. how about this, a local hardware store i went to today told me they didn't sell a lot of rock salt and shovels because they have already had microstorms over the last few weeks and a lot of people seem to already be stocked up. live in lewis, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. the jersey shore was expected to endi up with the mot snow. these crews loaded up their trucks with salt and brine
5:07 pm
solution today. they're pretreating roads with brine now and once the snow begins, screws will spread salt sprayed with magnesium chloride to help combat the cold. >> the salt only remains active to plus 15 to 17 degrees and then the magnesium chloride will keep the salt active up to minus 17 degrees. >> crews say because the snow is expected to be light and fluffy, they'll face the added challenge of it blowing back onto the roads that have already been plowed. >> the bitter cold can take a toll on your heating bill. all new at 5:00, we show you how a local food bank is helping those in need stay warm. >> reporter: they come from all over the area, the families and the people she helps are known to sandy fryer. >> what we have, we give. >> reporter: many we encountered today didn't want us to show their faces as they collected food they need to get by.
5:08 pm
>> we stopped here to get some sweaters because i don't have any. >> reporter: they have a thrift shop, coats, hats and scarves, also sweaters are for sale for just a few dollars. >> you just got oil last week? >> yes. >> how much was it? >> over $500. >> do you think that will get you through the winter? >> no. about four or five weeks maybe. >> reporter: and while the shelves are stocked, thanks to a lot of holiday office food drives, that's not going to help people stay warm. right now the colonial neighborhood council says it's getting a lot of phone calls from people needing help to pay their heating bills or getting them a little bit of oil to help keep them warm in the winter. >> we've had five families call in the last two days. >> reporter: that is a lot and fryer says the need for help is just getting started. callers like joyce, too ill to leave her bed, phoned in. >> there's people here that just
