screen. >> the heaviest snow accumulations will be at the jersey shore. this is a live look at the marina in cape may tonight, the calm before the storm. >> and the heaviest snow will hit right in the middle of tomorrow morning's rush. this is a live look at i-95, the ben franklin bridge, and i-76 in two spots tonight. no weather trouble right now but that is going to change soon. tonight crews are out brining the roads but also say their salt solution is less effective than usual because of the intense cold we've been seeing. >> our entire region is already frozen over with bone-chilling cold we just can't shake. today tourists bundled up at the philadelphia museum of art. ducks sitting in a frozen pond. fingers frozen working on a broken down van, and shoppers seeing their breath in king of prussia. but everyone told us the cold is easier than the snow. >> get a lot done today because it's coming, the snow is coming.
6:01 pm
>> nbc 10 sent an army of reporters to brave this cold to show you how people across the tri-state area are getting ready for this snowstorm. >> plus our double threat of meteorologists are timing out the snow in your neighborhood because this really varies depending on where you live just how much snow you're going to get. of course blizzard warnings now for the delaware beaches and the jersey shore. we have a team of reporters covering this winter storm for you tonight. let's begin with first alert chief meteorologist tammie souza. >> this is exactly why we do first alert weather and neighborhood weather us because we want we want to pinpoint what's going to happen in your neighborhood, not somebody else's neighborhood. we do have the first alert for the entire area but that blizzard warning is confined to southern delaware and the jersey shore. why? you'll get the highest winds. blizzard warnings are based on the wind blowing the snow around. you'll also get the highest snowfall totals as well. this will be from 9:00 tonight, not everybody will see the snow yet, but it will be in southern
6:02 pm
parts of delaware and also southern parts of the jersey shore. and that's going to linger through 7:00 tomorrow night. we will all get snow in between those time periods. heavy snow, 30 to 50-mile-an-hour winds. we'll have tropical storm-force winds here on land. out in the atlantic they'll have hurricane-force winds with this storm. we'll have a dangerous morning commute. after it leaves, the coldest air yet moves in. nothing on doppler radar right now, but the storm is down here moving out of the carolinas, making its way northward very, very quickly. let's go ahead and put into motion the timeline. look at this, as we go through tonight, by midnight it's across the entire area. the morning commute is socked in with snow and it leaves sometime between 4:00 and 6:00 it's out of the area. the heaviest snow from this, several feet could fall in new england. i'll take you through the first part of this so you can see the timing. by 6:00 nothing in delaware yet but we're starting to see fingers of flakes headed that way. by midnight, 1:00 in the morning, it's across philadelphia and much of the suburb area. an then by your morning commute, everybody has snow falling.
6:03 pm
we'll see those snow-packed roads, we'll see blowing and drifting. it is going to be rather dangerous and travel will be impacted, whether it's by rail, by road or by air. now, the snow totals will be different neighborhood to neighborhood. glenn has that part of the story. >> yeah, tammie, it's one of those backward storms where areas that normally get the least will get the most and areas that normally get the most will get the least. the other thing is this is not your typical snowstorm. the wind is going to make this a lot more of a problem than just these numbers. first, 8 to 10 inches right along the coast where the blizzard warning is, 4 to 8 across much of our region, the i-95 corridor, with lesser amounts to the north and west. now, if we get more specific with our computer models and showing you the areas likely to get hardest hit, cape may about 9.5 inches, close to 10 inches in atlantic city, close to 9 inches in violin, 7 in
6:04 pm
bridgeton, 7 in hammenton, as you get closer to philadelphia we're talking about lower numbers, more in the 4 to 6 range. but the other area that's going to get hard hit is in delaware and especially southern delaware. we've got georgetown around 10 inches, lewis, delaware, at 10 inches. we'll have wind out of the north so it's going to pick up moisture from delaware bay and that will increase the snow totals in that area as well. that's going to be a heavy, wet snow and that will cause some different kinds of problems. we'll have more neighborhood forecasts coming up. >> all right, glenn. road crews at the jersey shore are getting ready for major accumulations, as we've been telling you. the shore will see the worst of this nor'easter. let's go to ted greenberg who is live in atlantic city. ted, snow arriving there in a matter of hours really now. >> reporter: jim, thoerlauthori are warning people here at the shore that travel will become very dangerous if not
6:05 pm
impossible. that's the atlantic city expressway you see there on the other side of an icy bay this evening. tonight many here are preparing to stay inside. a flurry of presnow shopping. >> people panic. >> reporter: at the acme this afternoon. >> the wife said i better get out and get some stuff. >> reporter: before blizzard conditions potentially slam the jersey shore. >> i'm out of everything. now i won't be able to get out tomorrow if it snows. >> you don't want to go in there. it took me an hour to get a piece of fried chicken. i got it in my hand. it's unbelievable. >> we ain't going nowhere for at least a week. >> reporter: these fishing boats now docked in atlantic city. brutal cold and now a monster storm making it too dangerous to stay at sea. but icy conditions are causing issues here too. >> the main problem the boats are having here at the dock now is the fresh water pipes inside
6:06 pm
the boats freezing. >> reporter: at a house in ocean city, water gushing from this pipe that froze, then burst. a long sheet of ice left on the street. others dealing with similar winter weather woes. >> it's a huge headache. i have a house in florida that i'm going to be going to in eight days and i have to put up with this until we leave. not fun. >> reporter: definitely not fun. we just learned tonight that free parking will be available at the wave parking garage at mississippi and fairmount avenues to all residents and visitors from 8:00 tonight until 8:00 friday morning. >> and needed as well. thank you, ted greenberg, from our jersey shore bureau. how about this, the cape may lewis ferry pushing its way through big pieces of ice right
6:07 pm
there in the delaware bay. >> after tonight's run the ferry will suspend service. they are pretreating roads and will plow any snow that falls. >> some residents at the delaware beaches tell us they have their homes and their families ready for whatever comes their way. >> this is why i wanted to live at the beach so i could come and see these things whenever i wanted. ice on the bay. >> we can also tell you the emmanuel shelter in rehoboth beach will have extra volunteers tonight and tomorrow. people who are homeless won't have to leave in the morning like they usually do. they can wait out the weather inside the shelter. penndot says drivers should expect a quick snow accumulation once it starts because those roads are already below freezing. this is a live look right now at i-76 at city avenue and i-95 in south philadelphia. let's bring in nbc 10's steven fisher who is live in norristown. steven, crews there are preparing for a busy night.
6:08 pm
>> reporter: it's actually started during the day, they were out putting down some brining. in fact they're still out there pretreating some of those roads. i'm told once that's done, they'll come out here and trade in that brine for salt and their main goal is to help you get through your morning commute tomorrow. at headquarters in king of prussia, penndot is already keeping an eye on the roads. >> we're laying a salt brine down, we did today. major expressways, secondary routes, ramps, overpasses, things like that, that get slick. >> reporter: there's a lot to keep track of so they use remote control cameras to give them firsthand and up-to-date road conditions. >> it can impact the morning rush and possibly the evening rush so we're preparing for that and a long storm. >> reporter: and if it is a long storm, nicole scott is going to be prepared. >> i figured i better get it now and be safe. >> reporter: a lot of people decided to bundle up today and stop at either the grocery store or gas station. >> my car is horrible in the
6:09 pm
snow so i have to stay prepared for when it snows a lot. >> reporter: jason and his car will be staying home during the snowstorm tomorrow, but not everyone is so lucky. >> any time that there's inclimate weather, i have to be concerned. i have to leave early. i have to make sure that i shovel myself out of my driveway. >> reporter: and a lot of people i talked to said it's not necessarily the snow that bothers them, it's what that snow represents. shoveling, more traffic, things that you'll definitely come by tomorrow. penndot says if you are going to be hitting the roads tomorrow, you'll want to expect some delays and try to get out a little early. steven fisher, nbc 10 news. >> and while crews in philadelphia have salt trucks on stand by, others are focussed on outreach and trying to get people off those frigid streets and into a warm building. prevention point is extending its hours during the day to double as a warming center. at night a rec center is open for those in the fair hills and kensington neighborhoods.
6:10 pm

6:15 pm
in a matter of hours now. this is a live look tonight at those flags flying over center city. first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is timing out the snow for us coming up in a few minutes. first, all new at 6:00, if you've been having trouble heating your home, it's not really your boiler's fault. >> as rosemary connors explains, the equipment is designed for winters on the east coast, not the midwest, and that's why many crews are working overtime to compensat compensate. >> reporter: the hum of space heaters fills their house. >> you've got to keep the heat in, body heat, so the hat is necessary. >> reporter: on january 1st, the boiler in the basement broke. >> didn't know that the boiler was the original, so happy new year! >> reporter: crews responded to the no heat call with a new gas-fired boiler. it's designed to work with the
6:16 pm
weather typical for the region. this extended deep freeze is unusual for the east coast and wreaking havoc on boilers working overtime to keep up. >> so ours is designed to 5 degrees outdoor temperature, indoor temperature of 68. so if it's 5, you should be able to heat to 68. if it goes below that, probably if it's zero, you're probably talking 65 at the most. obviously on warmer days, 10 degrees, you're going to get late more heat out of it. >> reporter: nearby in overbrook, a technician is replacing a leaky pipe in a steam boiler. because of the big chill still with us, he recommends homeowners leave their thermostats in one place all day to take it easy on the boiler. >> i keep my house at 70 because we have a newborn, but i've been in houses where people keep them at 60. >> that's interesting because we can hook this into here and put water in here. >> reporter: back in drexel hill, the new boiler is ready to
6:17 pm
be installed and they are generating warm thoughts. >> spring and then summer again. time goes fast. it will pass. >> reporter: reporting from drexel hill, i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. the snow is surging toward the jersey shore tonight. a live look at beach avenue in cape may. as you can see, it's dry there right now, but that snow will arrive here very soon. >> and while the shore will get the worst of this storm, philadelphia will get hit as well. this is a live look at center city from our campus camera. let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. this snow moving in pretty soon now. >> yeah, you're going to get your dinner plans through fine, and then the morning, that's going to be a problem. we've got a first alert out for the entire area. now, we had a first alert out for this storm yesterday morning before there were any kind of watches or warnings or any kind of other alerting about this storm. we try to give you as much of a head's up as possible. that included philadelphia
6:18 pm
itself in the first alert. 9:00 p.m. tonight to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, heavy snow, blowing snow, drifting snow. we don't normally get that. dangerous morning commute as a result of the combination of all those things. blizzard warning up and down the coast. so what's a blizzard? you need three straight hours of gusts or sustained winds of 35 miles an hour or more, and a visibility of a quarter mile or less. it doesn't seem that difficult, but it's a very rare combination. we didn't even have that in philadelphia in '96 in the blizzard of '96. that's what it's called. it never quite got to that level. look at all of this moisture streaming up. look at all this moisture that's inland. and there is no sign of this thing moving out. it's moving up and it's moving up the coast, it's moving in our direction, and it is huge. this circulation, this thing
6:19 pm
goes a thousand miles across and 800 miles this way. that is a humongous storm, pay bigger than a typical nor'easter, even a big nor'easter. and that's why with the track even this far offshore, we're still getting blistered at the jersey shore. again, that would normally not happen. but the storm is so large. here's a look close up hour by hour as we go through the night. above freezing at the coast to start with, but the snow starts. the atmosphere is cold enough for snow, knocks the temperature down and then it accumulates. areas north and west of philly are getting less snow, but the temperature is so low that it's hard to take care of it. the salt doesn't work on temperatures like that, so you've got your own problems there. there's the morning rush and so it's snowing everywhere. it's windy everywhere. of course windiest at the shore.
6:20 pm
11:00 a.m. they're still getting some snow, heaviest at the shore, and tapering off in the afternoon. it's a fast-moving storm and that's why the snow totals are not even higher than this 8 to 10 inches across southern delaware, all along the shore. 4 to 8 inches in the major area around the i-95 corridor and lesser amounts to the north and west. so southeastern delaware, georgetown, lewis, long neck could get close to 10 inches. same thing with cape may, atlantic city. vineland is in the 4 to 8 inch. hammenton, weymouth, browns mills in the 4 to 8. tom's river in the 8 to 10. king of prussia, waterford, washington, bullwich, all in the 4 to 8 inch zone. and again, we could update this later tonight. allentown, maiden creek, you're in the 1 to 3, reading in the 1
6:21 pm
to 3. and that is less and less the farther north and west you go and then, remember, the most dangerous air of the season follows this storm. i'm john clark. where is eagles defensive coordinator jim schwartz going to interview this week? we'll hear from nick foles about what he needs to do in the playoff. is joel embiid playing tonight? that's next.
