cancelled or delayed classes tomorrow. you can see the list scrolling at the bottom of the screen right now. >> we'll be checking in with them over the next 30 minutes. >> this storm will look very different. depending on where you live. let's get an update on the timing and totals with chief meteorologist tammie souza. >> that's why we do neighborhood weather. some could see nearly a foot. others maybe a few inches. this is the storm as it's moving in. darker shades of purple in southern delaware and moving thu the jersey shore. to wild wood to at hasn'tic city. we're seeing the steadier snow develop. we'll watch this as it moves in from the south. and then the entire area will be covered. from upper pits grove. to wilmington. bear. vine land. light snowfalling right now.

you get towards georgetown, louis. towards the beach. that's where we're seeing the steadier snow. that's beginning to move in. that's where we expect the heavier totals. we sew the bands move on shore. it's a quick moving storm. the main body of the this is still well to the south of us. let's go ahead and look at the timing through tomorrow morning. at 2:30 i think we will see snow across philadelphia and parts of the lower pennsylvania suburb. we hit the morning commute look at the darker shades of blue. steady to heavy snow across the area. now this is just an initial look at some of the snow totals. we'll go into great depth neighborhood by neighborhood later on in the newscast. any where from philadelphia four to 8 inches. along the shore could see 8 to 10 inches perhaps pockets of a foot. and lesser amounts into burkes

county and out towards the le high valley. this first alert is in for the entire area for snow. white out conditions with heavy snow along the jersey shore. we have the blizzard warnings right now. the conditions will continue tonight through tomorrow. we'll have high winds. we're concerned about heavy snow. tropical storm force winds across the entire area. dangerous morning commute and drifting snow on the roads. we'll cover this and go neighborhood by neighborhood. all right. it's been snowing for more than an hour at the jersey shore. this is a live look at ocean city. you see the board walk covered in snow. the shore could see the biggest snow totals. >> let's check in with brandon hudson. what do you see there now? >> it started snowing around 9:15 here. at the beginning we gt the small snow flakes now we're getting thicker flakes. it looks like specks of dirt floating in the air.

but to give you an idea of how windy it is. storm force 10 you can see the wind gauge. we're getting more gusts. now we're getting wind gusts where you see it's slowing down. speeding up. look at this parking lot behind me. you don't see a will the of snow. it was starting to get accumulation in this area. but as we walk akrsz the street yul see more accumulation. along the grass by the bushes. in the street along the main drag here. we have shops on both ends of the street. look across the street at this gas station parking lot. it is covered in snow. we're we'll be back here in at the end of the newscast to fwif you an update on the conditions. and drivers are seeing. we'll see you then. one final trip through the

delaware bay for the cape may louis ferry. officials cancelled service tomorrow. because a big chunks of ice in the bay. and expected severe wind concerns. >> this storm is moving north tonight. right now in wilmington there's not a flake in sight. but down in the delaware beaches it is a different story. >> nbc10 is live at slaughter beach. how long has it been snowing where you are? >> it started snowing about two hours ago around 9:00. you can sea some of the snow sdp the wind starting to pick up. we are at slaughter beach. take a look out here. you can see some of the snow covering the icy water. just a little bit in the distance you can see the water rocking back and forth. the conditions have changed out here. in the last three hours. it didn't look like this when we were here around 7:30. we have traveled all across the area talking to a bunch of residents. they are ready for this storm.

>> reporter: it was calm earlier tonight. the water slowly rocked back and forth with large ice chunks. the deep freeze had set in. then the snow started to fall. louis si has made all her stops for the night. and was going home to hupg hunker down. >> trying to stay warm. keep the kids inside and make sure we stay safe. >> reporter: the snow immediately started to accumulate on the frozen ground. a strong wind could cause blizzard conditions. a carlisle volunteer firefighter and tells nbc10 they made adjustments for the storm having a crew on standby. >> anything that's a big storm snowstorm. blizzard conditions. so we keep a crew there. >> you heard there of course first responders, firefighters are ready for whatever this

storm may bring. once again we're leaving you with another look here at slaughter beach. take a look at the snow. it's forming and accumulating on the water. that's a big change from an hour ago. down here on the beach you can see some of the accumulation. that they're dealing with out here. the sand mixed in with the snow. first responders sdp residents are ready for whatever the storm brings. philadelphia water department crews are working through the cold conditions to repair a broken water main. it happened between fill mont and in the city summer ton section. the eastbound lanes will be shut down until the work is complete. live look at conditions in philadelphia. no snow here along broad street in center city. people are bracing for the weather. to cause problems on the roads tomorrow. >> let's check in with keith

cancelled. >> i heard this morning two inches and a gentleman told me six to nine. i'm not sure. >> reporter: most of us. hit the grocery store stocking up on the essentials. >> it's crowded. >> i came and got some water. >> back life on the cross street of parker avenue. the street department will have 375 of the trucks ou tonight. this will be the secondary roads that will be difficult to navigate. be careful. important to know here too because of the snow emergency you'll have to get your cars off the snow emergency routes in the city or get towed. in center city there are six parking garages offers a $5 flat rate fee to park over night. >> a lot of people are scrambling right now with that reminder. from the roads to the sky. a live look at philadelphia international airport.

airlines have begun cancelling flights for tomorrow. if you have travel plans be sure to check approximate your airline. >> the snowstorm is already brought the south to a standstill. believe it or not this is south carolina. where drivers are dealing with white -out conditions there. charleston an icy bridge was shut down. after being too treacherous for traffic. >> georgia is covered in blanket of white. and ice as well. that maybe causing problems for drivers. kids seem to be enjoying the rare snow. >> drew smith is live. and ahead we'll check in with the people who have to work tonight. concerned about the possibility of power outages. but something under ground that has been causing them problems for days. i'll have your snow totals as this monster storm expands and moves right passed the area. i'll let you know when it will exit. and the frigid cold air will

this video sent to us within the hour. people here in for much more. the swrer see shore will see some of the most snow from this system. let's check in now with drew smith. >> live in vine land. hard to tell from this vantage point. has started there yet? >> light snow has been coming down for half hour. and you can see it's falling under the holiday lights that are up here in downtown vine land. no real accumulation to speak of so far on the pavement. but you can see by the car there is little bit of snow sticking.

also tonight. all of the agencies here have been working to make sure they're ready for the storm. as we found out a lot of crews have already been busy for days. >> reporter: before the snow it wasn't white on the street. instead the sight of running water which began to freeze. widespread water main breaks like this one keeping the new jersey american water crews busy. >> it's probably the most i have seen since i have been here 15 years. >> reporter: they'll be on the job as this snow piles up. >> you have to work through it. around the clock. >> reporter: in vine land. hotel parking lots fwan to fill up tonight. people trying to avoid driving through the storm. you could find people lining up to get last minute supplies. >> getting gas. and stopped at the supermarket. now heading home. >> milk. bread, eggs, sugar, salt.

problems: the company hasn't responded. >> there could be a big wirn out there tonight. the in your opinions for the power ball jackpot was drawn minutes ago. if someone matches them all they could win $460 million. back now to the first alert winter storm coverage. kate may county. snow starting to stick to the roads. >> the storm is slow will i spreading to other parts of the area. let's get an update on the timing. from chief meteorologist. >> it's going to last through night. and much of the day tomorrow. especially for the jersey shore. we have blizzard warnings. it's rare we see these warnings in effect. lighter purple winter storm warnings. that includes philadelphia. south jersey. lower pennsylvania suburb and da. it doesn't mean there's going to be a lot less snow. it means the highest wind and totals are going to be out along the jersey shore. a blizzard warning is 35 miles

per hour winds. for about three hours. and you can have an inch of snow or foot of snow. it's white out conditions with that steady blowing snow. lee high valley and upper pennsylvania suburbs in burkes county lesser amounts. it will be windy. but should see the least amount of snow. the biggest concern is here along the jersey shore and the beaches of delaware. we'll see ice pushing up against the shore. initially before the wind blow things the opposite direction. the heaviest snow is down here in southern delaware county. and moving along the jersey shore. so let's take a look. closer and see where everything is. wilmington light snow beginning to fall. light. nothing into the philadelphia yet. washington not really there.

pits grove light snow. vine land very light snow. it's the darker shade where we can see the steady snow. frankfurt and louis and georgetown. and over towards cape may. through wild wood. and sea aisle. up to ship bottom. that's where we'll see the heaviest totals on or in land from the shore. you can see the storm making its way north. the bulk of the storm still down here. it's still actually intensifying. and the central pressure of the storm will be so strong will drop so low. it's like a hurricane. hurricane force winds. on land we'll have tropical storm force winds. it is tracking close to the shore. we'll be in a favorable band for snow. you can watch the band as they tighten up. this low presses north ward. watch the time line. shades of blue. look at the band they'll tighten up and really tighten up as this

intensifies and a lot of heavy snow will fall on new england. closer here and take a look at what's happening hour by hour. 2:30 we have snow across philadelphia. 7:00 tomorrow mortganing a nast morning commute. dangerous in some places. noontime maybe breaks in the snow. 5:00 the jersey shore still looking at light snow. and all of us are clear tomorrow night. temperatures plummet. skies clear out and the coldest air of the season comes in. 14 for the high on friday. you see along the jersey shore we could be upward of ten inches. maybe pockets of 12. let's look at some of the neighborhoods. in let's see morris river. 6.8. 12 prnt 6 north of atlantic city. maybe ten in cape may.

delaware could see five inches for dover. eight for georgetown. maybe 2.9 inches or so towards new ark or middle town. philadelphia we could see that four to 6 inch range. through the area. this is what concerns us the most. looking at these totals coming down on already frozen ground. making snow packed roads with white out conditions and snow blowing around power lines could come down and branchs on trees. we have a first alert out. we have a meteorologist in this office all night and throughout the day tomorrow. to update you. keep it right here on nbc10. here's a live from the live camera in ocean city. the snow is sticking there. the winter storm gets started. count on us for weather updates any time. the app has forecast for your specific neighborhood. and radar. and information on school closings and delays.

ago. have you noticed a difference since then? >> a big difference. you can lock at the road here and we're starting to see more snow on the road in route 9 here. the main drag in this part of town. you can see it's not slowing down drivers. the speed limit is 45 miles per hour. we see people driving. a truck passing thousand. seems to be driving 40 or more. it doesn't seem to be slowing down drivers. we herd in other places people are driving as slow as 20 miles per hour. we're about to get on the road and we will maybe let you know how those conditions are. >> really big flakes coming down. let's get one more look at the snow. the streets and sidewalks are covered here. we're expecting more by morning. we'll have a final check on the forecast. next.
