and that breaking news is the winter storm that's pummelling parts of our viewing area. good morning. we are in a first alert right now. so let's get right to bill henley. he has your most accurate t to . >> take a look. this is a live view. you can see the roadway, but look at the camera shaking. that's the wind that's giving us the blowing snow and whiteout conditions at the shore. cape may you can barely make out the traffic lights along beach avenue. the heavy snow has been moving into the shore more than four inches on the ground in cape may county. 7 inches plus and some neighborhoods in southern delaware and look at the bands of heavy snowfall that are yet to reach the shore. those are moving in. inland, less snow but it's still accumulating snow and with the wind blowing it's going to feel cold all day. there's the center of the storm moving off to the northeast but still close enough to give us

not only snow but look at these wins. gusting to 41 miles per hour in atlantic city and we could see them hit 50 miles an hour this afternoon. still steady in philadelphia, trenton and atlantic city. starts to taper off from the west at 1:00 this afternoon. it's later this afternoon that we'll start to see this system come to an end but the wind will still be with us. >> and we it will still be a while before the roads are clear. the storm is affecting traffic throughout the area. jessica boyington is standing by with a check on the roads. >> every time an accident clears another pops up. we were watching 421 near trooper road because of a crash and i just saw a disabled vehicle here over into the ditch on the side of the shoulder after the highway. so that's pretty much what we're seeing a lot of and i wanted to show you this. so many disabled vehicles popping up all over the place. even if you're seeing that the roads are a little bit easier to come by. a snack knifed tractor trailer

we'll say hey in a little bit. >> we are. we'll get to your news at 8:00. it's the storm that tops us off. it's started pelting the east coast, wiping out traction, visibility and travel plans for a lot of us. schools closed from georgia to new england. our team coverage starts with nbc's catie beck in norfolk this morning. good morning. >> reporter: hi. we are still under a blizzard warning here in norfolk, virginia. we are seeing wind gusts at 35 miles an hour. somewhere between 8 to 10 inches of snow on the ground here. this unusual winter weather is basically bringing the south to a standstill this morning. widespread school closures, business closures, highways, tunnels, bridges basically deserted at this hour. airport cancellations up and down the southeast. another major concern right now is power outages as thousands remain without power due to this storm. they are now battling the frigid temperatures without heat. that is something that crews are working to address very diligently, as these

temperatures fall here in norfolk. now as we said earlier, this storm is going to pass through the south by mid-morning and head north. it is only going to intensify as it goes. savannah? >> catie, thank you so much. the nation's largest school system here in new york city is among those shut down today. nbc's craig melvin is in central park, where the wind and snow are starting to pick up. hey, craig. good morning. >> reporter: and the temperature has dropped, as well, hoda. it's now 23 degrees. i'd say roughly an inch or so has fallen so far, but the wind gusts have started. they are expecting 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts in and around parts of new york today. you mentioned the city's school system being shut down. school systems in connecticut and new jersey quickly followed suit. amtrak running on a modified schedule throughout the northeast. and the majority of flights out of laguardia and out of newark international, those flights have been cancelled. as you can see here in central

england, those blizzard warnings from boston all the way up into maine. we're going to be watching this very closely as it pushes up. snow for the mid-atlantic states. this afternoon, it'll continue to tonight, and then the brutally cold air will start being drawn in behind this system. we're looking for anywhere from about 4 to 6 inches of snow from the peninsula to the mid-atlantic states. then we're going to be expecting anywhere from 1 to 2 inches. 3 to 6 for philadelphia. new york, 5 to 9 inches. hartford, connecticut, will see 9 inches. providence, 8 to 12. portland, 10 to 15. boston, 8 to 12. with snow falling quickly, we could see higher amounts. it may be an overachiever as we start to see the day wear on. guys? >> al, thank you so much. politics now. this split between the president and his former chief strategist

steve bannon is getting even more hostile. overnight, a trump lawyer sent bannon a cease and desist letter, warning of legal action for allegedly breaching a non-disclosure agreement. bannon is quoted in a new book saying, among other things, that a 2016 meeting between donald trump junior and russian operatives was treasonous. the meeting took place before bannon joined the team. the president fired back wednesday, said when bannon was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. that's a quote. however, on his radio show last night, bannon says he still supports the president and called him a great man. we should mention, michael wolff, who wrote "the fire and fury inside the trump white house," will be here tomorrow morning for an exclusive, live interview. we'll turn to hoda for the morning boost. >> here we go, girl. we've been talking a lot about the powerball and the mega millions jackpots, but this morning, we have another lottery story. this is about a new jersey mom
