camera, it's 16 on broad street right now. just a tad colder in wilmington where it's 15 degrees now.t i-95 all the major roads, they should be clear of snow by this point tonight. down the shore, it's also 15 degrees. this is a live picture of music pier in ocean city. the snow on the ound right there. first alert meteorologist steve sosna is joining us. you and the first alert weather team have been letting us know for days that the worst is coming. >> we saw this about ten days ago, this round number three. we saw that it would be the worst round. unfortunately, it's living up to its expectations. we have to get through tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night, and the first part of sunday and then we'll finally put this to bed. it. whato bad is thisisu wind at 2 in philadelphia. take that temperature of 15 and combine it with the wind, you

get the current feels like temperature, 4 below zero. wilmington, delaware, traffic is moving okay but beware of icy spots. 14, add in the wind it feels like 3 below zero in your neighborhood. so area temperatures don't focus so much on the thermometer in your car, it's the feels like temperature. it drops like a rock here tonight. that clear sky, that west wind, look at that, feels like 23 below at 9:30 tonight in the poconos. 6 below in as we go through the overnight hours, even worse, if you have evening plans, dress in layers, if you can take breaks inside. we'll have the ten day forecast coming up. new at 6:00, we've learnedt deadly. police in vineland say a man died because of exposure to the cold. officers found him yesterday morning. people at the shore are still digging out tonight following the big blizzard.

and now they have to deal with the dangerous cold temperatures as they dig out. >> nbc 10's reporter ted greenburg joining us in atlantic city. all bundled up because the sun's gone down, makes it feel colder, right? >> reporter: it is biting. clearing out these cars is proving to be a very tough task. you know what? it's not going to be getting any easier with even colder weather on the way. the day after the blizzard, this man is struggling to get his minivan out of a snow bank in atlantic city. >> oh, my god. very hard. >> reporter: the uber and lyft driver trying to clear away crunchy snow and enduring air that feels like it's below zero. >> i was trying to dig the snow out, but i'm getting cold. it's very difficult for me now. even i can't talk. you see? i can't talk. >> reporter: the jersey shore got slammed with more than a foot of snow. the frigid landscape, now dotted

by drifts, some several feet high. high winds and blowing snow adding to the challenge. >> the breeze is worse than the snow because the breeze keeps blowing the snow back over where we just shovelled. >> i did all this yesterday. my front door. i'm back doing it again. >> reporter: this water main break one of a dozen in atlantic city. an unprecedented amount for the resort in a single day. another casualty of the deep freeze, bringing more ice to streets already in rough shape. >> it's really causing a lot of havoc. now we're seeing additional streets shut down. >> reporter: barbara and elaine are now staying at the showboat hotel for free with more than 40 others after a fire an at atlantic city high rise last night displaced nearly 300 old and disabled residents in brutally cold weather. >> i feel blessed because my family is in north jersey.

i don't have immediate family in this area. and they made me feel welcome. >> they will be able to stay with us as long as possible. as long as necessary. >> reporter: the other hotels in town are also housing those displaced residents. because of the snow, free parking has been extended at the wave parking garage here in atlantic city at mississippi and fairmount avenues for all area residents and visitors until 9:00 monday morning. live in atlantic city, i'm ted greenburg, nbc 10 news. that car was almost completely covered behind him. in philadelphia, as many as 800 city workers and contractors are working to clear the snow. city crews reported to work on wednesday and haven't returned home since. plows are focusing on more residential streets where the packed snow and frigid temperatures are making roads slippery. being outside in this cold is tough. being inside in the cold with

busted pipes could be just as miserable. frozen pipes are plaguing homeowners in philadelphia and costing a pretty penny too. deanna durante shows you the damage, clean up and ways to avoid the mess in the first place. >> reporter: it can happen anywhere p. co anywhere. cold air comes in contact with your pipes. a small crack like this can create a huge mess like this. and this is what homeowners in mount airy woke up to this morning. six inches of water. ice still hangs behind the walls. >> basically the insulation needs to be behind the pipe. the pipe needs to be insulated. the wall needs to be insulated with the pipe in front of it. when it's not the pipe freezes. when it thaws, it bursts. >> reporter: for pipes behind closed walls insulation is key. plumbers say homeowners must have that pipe totally wrapped, otherwise cold air gets in. >> i'm seeing it in new homes.

it's all over the place. >> reporter: this man says he's had 100 calls since the weekend and says even if you repair a broken pipe, you have to fix the problem that led to the freeze or that new pipe is going to break, too. >> the garage doors are want closed all the way. on these really cold nights when the wind is blowing, the wind blows through the garage, hits the pipe and freezes themce as fast. they're waking up to burst pipes. >> reporter: any pipes runniedie pipes should be shut off for the winter. that's just a few tips. >> if you have an area over api sometimes you want to leave your wat water trickling. >> reporter: open cabinets to allow heat to get to the pipes. what happens if you have a broken pipe? know where the main shut off is in your house. one turn will cut off the water

man park the car and run off. now, to a developing story. immediate changes in the das office. today the new district attorney told 31 employees to resign effective today. nbc 10 was outside the das office. we saw people leaving the office with boxes and files. according to the da's office, the intention is to take the office in a different direction. sources tell us he fulfilled a campaign promise of cleaning house if need be. allentown's mayor gave his state of the city address as his impending corruption case looms over his administration. on monday, powlowski was sworn in despite facing charges in connection for a pay to play scheme. he tells nbc 10 he's looking forward to proving his innocence. >> you know, i believe when people see our side of the story, you'll be able to see,

a total loss. a family home burned to the ground. tonight, the rubble soot and dust that's left behind is covered in snow. it happened to a south jersey firefighter who rushed to put out the flames. tonight, his community is coming to the rescue. >> nbc 10's reporter cydney long reports on the emotion of the last 48 hours. >> reporter: hiding up the

warmth and comfort of his father's coat. he gets a hug. >> knowing that at 38 years old i'm starting over. four kids, a wife. i've got nothing. >> reporter: it was wednesday night that penwell, a volunteer here at tabernacle company one was dispatched. on the ride to the fire call, he learned it was his home uppen flames. >> that was the first thing, where is my son. i knew he was supposed to be getting home. >> reporter: his son ran from his school bus inside. he managed to save three of the family's four dogs. >> i told him, you know, i'm proud of him. but i wanted to -- don't ever do that again. >> reporter: a colleague took this photo of trevor hugging his dad. since their home was destroyed the penwells have been sleeping in the bunkroom at the fire

house. the community has been coming together and donating everything they can think of to help the penwells to get back on their feet. this woman lost everything in a house fire the 18 years ago. >> i'm sure the kids lost things that were special to them. but now they're going to get new things and those things that they have are going to have the meaning of what this community was able to do. >> reporter: snow now covers the burned down home. >> i felt grateful. >> reporter: despite losing all their christmas gifts and everything they own. >> it is amazing. never would i believe that so many people would come together for somebody they don't know. >> reporter: the penwells got a sister through adoption just before christmas. >> when we get a new house, it will be better or just the same. we'll look forward to that and everything will be okay. >> reporter: they have each other. cydney long, nbc 10 news. that is the most important. new at 6:00, an update to a

story about a local uber driver who is using her car to spread the warmth to those who really need it . malinda bower has been giving the homeless free rides to sh t shelts. uber philly saw our story and they were impressed with her passion for helping the less fortunate. they donated money to two homeless shelters in her name. hundreds of puerto rican evacuees are better equipped to face a level of cold they've never experienced. a charity handed out winter weather gear to the evacuees today. the group spent the past few weeks collecting coats, hats, skarve acarves and gloves. >> this is not even weather i'm used to and i've lived here for quite some time. people that are coming from puerto rico, clearly need a little more extra help. >> organizers say they want to

make sure the families had the gear in time for three kings day which is traditionally the end of the christmas season into to weather right here. this video pretty much says it all. downright freezing today. mother nature had no mercy for th this mail carrier in ventnor. if you're going to be outside you need to be covered. there's some skiers in camelback tonight where it's only 4 right now. >> a little bit warmer for skaters at penn's landing. they're taking on the cold weather at the river rink where it's 15 degrees out there. i hope they have really warm gear on. first alert meteorologist steve sosna is talking subzero temperatures. >> this is the third and final punch of this. then we'll finally start to get next week. this next 48 hours is the challenge. if you know anybody who has a medical condition, that may be

vulnerable to the cold, check in on them. give them a phone call. see how they're doing. this is serious cold. especially if you lose heat in your building you're in real trouble. pipes are vulnerable in this weather as well. we have to deal with this through 8:00 on sunday morning. the dangerous part of this will start to relax just a bit. monday we're looking at a messy mixture. this is our next system on our radar that we will be watching here throughout the weekend into early next week. it could bring snow, sleet and freezing rain. if you get the latter here we're in real trouble. we'll keep an eye on this and have updates throughout the weekend. then the january thaw kicks in. and it will almost feel hot around here. 50 degrees after we've been near zero? that's a heck of a warmup we have for you by late next week. a live look outside, you can see it's cold, it's quiet. it's one of those nights where you want to get from your car inside somewhere. that walk is not a good

experience. 3 in mount pocono. 15 in philadelphia. 12 in blue bell. we have snow pack from the poconos down to the jersey shore. that means this arctic air, as it comes down from canada has no chance to warm up. when it comes over snow cover, it stays just as cold, even down to the shore. 5 to 10 below is what you need to plan for this evening. it's a real chore. even tomorrow morning when you wake up, this i think is the worst it's going to get. tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., feeling like 10 to 15 below. at its best tomorrow, feeling like zero in tomorrow and 17 below in the poconos. we do this all over again tomorrow night. the breeze should not be as intense on sunday morning. when the temperature is down to near zero it doesn't take much of a wind to generate an 8 below wind chill. sunday, 6:00, we have plus numbers. that's always a good thing. it will feel like 8 degrees above zero. that's the start of what will be a significant warmup.

tonight, lows between 5 and 30 below in terms of the feels like temperature. this cold is shared all along the east coast where they're watching the citrus crop tonight in central florida. the strawberries have been taking a real beating here. in fact, spectacular to pay higher prices on them as you head into the month of january. temperatures in the lower to middle teens tomorrow. on sunday, it's a little bit better, a little bit less of a breeze. and temperatures in the lower 20s. so let's get to that wintry mix on monday. because it starts after, i think, the morning commute in most spots. look what happens by 9:00 a.m. just after the first part of the morning commute, some light snow breaks out. then it switches over to some sleet and freezing rain indicated by the pink colors. it's the evening commute, that's the commute i'm concerned about that could be an icy mess. 34 on monday. look what happens thereafter. a nice thaw coming your way. 44 on wednesday. i'm being conservative here. temperatures could be warmer

snow. but you can't just blow away the cold. the kids got two days off school but many feel trapped inside. this viewer's home looks like a barbie bomb went off. but a brave few, kicking it old school, sledding on wilmington's rockford park hill. this dad made sure his boy got outside today. >> seems like the ipad has taken over and video games and kids just don't get out like they used to. >> reporter: at the flaherty house this dad is making the rest of us dads look bad. he built an ice rink. >> normal winter temperatures are fine. but they come in on their own. >> reporter: as much fun as it is to be outside, at some point you have to know when to put the sticks away and go outside. at one point we had a hockey fight. i will take your both down. they should have kept the gloves
