up. the temperature just keeps dropping. believe it or not, we're not at our lowest low quite yet. the dangerous cold is now responsible for dozens of deaths across this country. nbc's morgan rat ford is in lower manhattan by a frigid hudson river. morgan, good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, that's right. good morning. we can barely feel your fingers. it is less than 10 degrees. residents up and down the coast are waking up trying to clean up after those plummeting temperatures and record flooding slammed parts of the northeast. at least 39 people have been reported dead and thousands are waking up this morning without power. >> temperatures are freezing. >> the bomb cyclone is gone but the bitter cold remains. as much as half of the country is below freezing today.

mt. washington new hampshire expects the wind chill to reach 100 below zero. people have died from exposure, accidents and medical emergencies caused by removing snow. along the massachusetts shore a sea of ice surrounding boats and homes forcing rescues from flooded houses. a good samaritan pulling the harbor master from the churning water. >> i saw him and i said i don't have much more time. i can't hold on anymore. >> frozen pipes burst adding to the severe damage. at a high school parking lot, 60 cars submerged in ice are now beyond repair. nationwide 4,000 flights were canceled during the storm. boston and new york eventually got flights off the ground friday but with the carolinas, charleston and greenville are struggling to get operations back. it's going to take the rest of the weekend to straighten it

out. >> maybe it will come back monday or tuesday. >> this frozen waterfall is in western new york where wind chills could reach 40 below. cold enough to cause frost bite to exposed skin in as little as ten minutes. double digit wind chills froze the water coming out of hoses near pittsburgh friday. a 22-year-old man died in the blaze. that arctic blast is expected to make temperatures feel as cold as 30 below zero in some parts of the country this weekend and that cold air is expected to plummet as those temperatures drop. back to you. >> all right, morgan there for us in battery park. >> i guess the big question, people just want to know when they're getting relief. >> it's going to last all weekend and then we'll turn the corner. i want to point out when you've got wind chills around 20 below it only takes 30 minutes for frost bite to kick in. cover your extremities and stay inside. 122 million people are under some sort of wind chill warning

chief strategist now derided as the leaker, sloppy steve bannon who cooperated with the headline grabbing new book "fire and fury" released four days early after the president's lawyer tried to block it. president trump insisted he gave author michael wolff zero access. i never spoke to him for book. but wolff told savannah exclusively. >> i absolutely spoke to the president. whether he reliealized it was a interview i do not. >> but not secretary of state rex tillerson who said that assertion does not apply it him. >> i've never questioned his mental fitness. i have no reason to question his mental fitness. >> it's outrageous to make these

fbi investigation into the clinton foundation. two investigators asked the justice department and the fbi to look into the man behind the controversial and unsubstantiated report about the report and his ties to russia. we get more on that from nbc's jeff bennett in washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. as you ksaid two major developments are raising the stakes over an fbi investigation. senators investigating russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election are turning the tables calling for a criminal investigation of christopher steel, the former british spy behind the now infamous so-called trump dossier. the damming and disputed dossier contains explosive allegations about president trump's

purported links to russia. in a letter to the department of justice and fbi, senators chuck grassley and lindsey graham say steel may have misled federal investigators about his communications with the media about the dossier. democrats are dismissing it as a distraction from the ongoing russia probe. >> i have seen no evidence none whatsoever that would justify this criminal referral. it seems more like an effort to distract from the real priorities what should be the priorities of the committee. >> reporter: adding to democrats outrage, a revelation that the fbi has renewed an investigation into the clinton foundation. at issue whether clinton foundation donors received favorable treatment from the department of state when hillary clinton was secretary of state. president trump's openly called for clinton to be investigated. branding his former rival crooked hillary and tweeting where is our justice department

in a clinton spokesman calling the investigation a sham adding the goal is to distract from the indictments guilty pleas and accusations of treason from trump's own people at the expense of our justice department integrity. >> reporter: it's not clear whether there's new evidence involved or whether president trump's rhetoric prompted the fbi to reopen its probe of the clinton foundation. let's bring in phillip rucker. phil, good morning. >> good morning. >> let's start with the book. one of the more troubling allegations in michael wolff's book is that the president is mentally unfit for office. when he talked to savannah yesterday, he said that according to steve bannon he's totally lost it. you've got a lot of sources inside this administration. does this jive with what you've heard as well? >> well, the book's author paints a full portrait of what

we've heard in sort of whispers and bits and pieces over the last year in washington. we had senator bob corker from tennessee question the president's competence and fitness for the job. the book is really a devastating portrayal bringing it all together and raising alarms about the president's mental capacity. >> let's talk about steve bannon. not only is he under attack but he's lost an important financial backer, the mer cer family. is he done in washington or wounded. >> i would say he's severely wounded. i don't think anybody's ever done in trump world. but steve bannon losing the mer se family support, that is significant. they were his bankrollers, his financial backers. he was hoping to use their resources to really become a powerful figure in shaping the midterm elections this year. >> congressional republicans are on the attack once again going after some of their favorite targets, the clintons, the clinton foundation.

you've got senator graham, senator grass re going after the guy behind this controversial dossier recommending to the justice department that they file charges against christopher steel. what's this real about, phillip? >> well, i think they're both significant developments and in part they're in response to the pressure that president trump has been exerting over the last several months to try to investigate the clintons, investigate the dossier, investigate all these other things that are separate from the russia probe under way with robert mueller into whether the trump campaign had any coordination or collusion with russian officials to impact the election last year. >> before you leave i want to ask you about the economy. president trump is all about the economy. he tweets about the record high stock market, the low unemployment rate. 2017 saw the weakest job creation since 2010. is his economic success story, is it all smoke and mirrors or is it really? >> well, there is some really economic success over the last year. it's also important to note that

posturing, sales haven't slipped. this holiday apple beat out all other manufacturers. more than 40% of new device activations had an i in front of their names. proof that despite a few flaws apple still reins. a major health warning this morning concerning the flu. the centers for disease control says nearly 40 states now are reporting moderate to high flu activity. so far the flu season the number of cases is far higher than last year and it could get worse. >> natalie is here with advice about how to keep you and your family safe. >> dr. natalie, we hear about the flu every year. it seems as if there's the problem. what's different this year? >> there's a few ways to have a bad flu season. one is you have increased flu activity. the other way is to actually have a strain that's predominates that's particularly dangerous and that the vaccine doesn't cover that well.

guess what, we're kind of having the perfect storm of that. we're having increased activity. we are having a vaccine that's covering a couple different strains and the one predominating is the one not covered by the vaccine. as you pointed out, we have over 40,000 cases reported now as opposed to 14,000 cases last year at this time. >> here's the challenge. if you say the vaccine, we hear it's 10% effective, there are so many who say i won't get a flu shot. >> exactly. if you get a flu shot, it's going to cover three or four different strains. the 10% number is referring to one particular strain that's covered in those vaccines. it happens to be one of the more dangerous strains so that's important. the other strains are getting covered about 50% to 60%. if you're getting a shot chances are you're getting covered for the other strains. we believe the flu shot makes it

less severe. >> it's not too late. >> absolutely. >> one of the explanations we're seeing the numbers is perhaps it has peaked a little earlier. flu season lasts well into spring and we would expect cases to continue until february. it takes two weeks for the flu shot to kick in. you still get it now. you'll get your antibodies in two weeks. you will be protected and you'll protect other people in your community who are more vulnerable to getting sick from the flu. >> what should you do if you still get the flu? >> if you think you've come down with the flu, the first thing do is pick up the phone and call your doctor. should you get tested? sometimes it's a false negative. you either get tested for the flu or you get started on anti-viral medicine preferably within the first 48 hours. there are a couple different ones that are available. >> thank you so much. dylan, should we talk about this cold again? another check of the weather. >> we are going to see the cold and more snow move through parts

krystal. >> hey, dray. we're looking at that first alert in place for the entire area. this will last through all of today and right through sunday morning. why are we under that first alert? it's the dangerous cold. and when we say dangerous, we really truly mean this can be fatal type of cold. this biting, stinging kind of weather where you step outside and instantly will feel that windchill. around 5 to 25 below zero is what we've been experiencing through the morning hours. and we are looking at frostbite possible as little as 30 minutes as a result of this type of cold. now, that cold spell is going to stick over our region through the rest of today. so take a look at the actual temperatures. 8 in mt. holly and philadelphia. 6 in allentown and 7 in wilmington. vineland 8 degrees. these are the actual temperatures. wilmington has just now tied a record for cold on this date. now take a look at the feels like temperature. many of us at 10 or below. 12 degrees below zero in philly, 10 below in atlantic city. 24 below what it feels like in mt. pocono and 10 below in

have much more time. i can't hold on anymore. >> frozen pipes burst adding to the severe damage. at a high school parking lot, 60 cars submerged in ice are now beyond repair. nationwide 4,000 flights were canceled during the storm. boston and new york eventually got flights off the ground friday but in the carolinas with little or no snow equipment charleston and greenville airports are struggling to get operations back. it's going to take the rest of the weekend to straighten it all out. this frozen waterfall is in western new york where wind chills could reach 30 below. that's cold enough to cause frost bite to exposed skin in as little as ten minutes. double digit wind chills froze the water coming out of firefighters hoses near pittsburgh friday morning. a 22-year-old man died in the blaze. >> here in new york city we're under what's called a code blue. that means the temperatures are

dangerously low and authorities are going into the cities and checking on some of the city's most vulnerable populations. with this wind chill temperatures are expected to feel as though as 30 degrees below zero and that's as the arctic air is expected to continue throughout the weekend. i try not to do hyperbole. that may have been the coldest i've ever been. literally. >> how cold is it? >> wind chill of minus 11. and tomorrow it will be colder. you don't want to spend much more time outdoors than you have to. we have 122 million people under some sort of warning or win chill advisory. temperatures are cold enough, but then the wind makes it feel that much colder to any exposed skin. in detroit the wind chill is 14 below right now. chicago has an air temperature of 2 below. minneapolis has an air

wa watch out for "get out". it has a lot of momentum coming into the golden globes. these movies represent their solo directorial debuts. >> the best actress category, you say this year, this is probably the most exciting category to watch. >> yeah, i think. so for drama it's going to be between sally hawkins and franc francis mcdormand. sally hawkins doesn't really have any lines. she plays a mute woman so her performance is through expression. i am going with sally hawkins. i was blown away by her performance. the supporting category is my favorite. we have two women who play tough mothers. i think it's going to be a toss up between laurie metcalf and allison jannie. even though you don't like her, you can't stopwatching. neither have won a golden globe. the last time laurie metcalf was
