difficult to track into our area. it's not going to be all snow like the last few systems that have come through. right now, it's just cloudy in philadelphia, abington, washington township and evesham township. but look to the west, you can see the snow is on our doorstep and extends through pennsylvania. but a closer look reveals the warming in the atmosphere that's actually changing the snow over to a combination of sleet and freezing rain. the warmer the atmosphere gets, the more likely we'll see that sleet and freezing rain come into the philadelphia area. if it gets warm enough, it will change over to all plain rain. but i don't think that's in store for most of our area. some spots will get that and i'll show you it progresses as the day goes on. this is 1:00 this afternoon. you can see some snow off to the north and west. we may see a mix of some sleet and snow in reading and allentown during the very early afternoon hours. then between 1:00 and 3:00, that wet weather spreads to the south and east, moves into northern

delaware. and you can see it in some of the suburbs, chester county, and just barely into montgomery and bucks county. that's 3:00 in the afternoon. so still pretty quiet in philadelphia. but watch how that changes can as we go into the late afternoon hours and the evening commute. that area expands, this is the area of sleet and freezing rain, so those untreated surfaces will be getting an icy coating from the suburbs through philadelphia, wilmington, even northeast philadelphia, and into south jersey. and then, as it pushes to the south and east during the evening hours, we'll see it change over to rain. that's as the warmer air takes over, you'll see a mix of that in delaware and south jersey and eventually at the shore. but the ice, that's the big threat. i'll take a look at how much ice you can expect in your neighborhood when i'm back in a few minutes. >> all right, bill, thank. as bill said, the first place to see the wintry mix will be in the will have. >> that's where nbc 10 steven fisher is live in allentown. steven, what's it like there? >> reporter: well, right now

complex. it is shut down today, but you can see, workers are here. they are outside still working to shovel snow and use snow blowers outside on the sidewalk. they are spreading salt, putting salt down on the parking lot. just still so much snow to be removed here in atlantic city. the head of the city's emergency management tells me snowplowing is mostly complete in the resort. however, as you can see, some side streets, they still need to be cleared. the city got slammed with more than a foot in thursday's blizzard. then ended up with very large snow drifts, more than city crews could handle on their own. ac partnered with the new jersey department of transportation to remove snow around the clock with numerous trucks and other heavy machinery. officials say the d.o.t. finished up this morning and had to deploy those resources to other parts of the state for the wintry mix that's now headed our way. >> we have folks come down from all areas of new jersey, north

jersey, south jersey, central. so he did have to take some of those guys back. but what we were assured that we would be able to have tomorrow four apparatuses that would help complete the process. >> reporter: as for the d.o.t. and its efforts to deal with this afternoon's wintry mix, a spokesman tells me this will primarily be a salt spreading effort. there's not going to be a lot of accumulation, so it won't be a plowing effort, but a salt spreading effort. and he says there is still residual salt on the road from last week, so that will serve as a pre-treatment on state highways. and that d.o.t. spokesman is asking dryers to take this afternoon's wintry mix, wintery weather situation very seriously. live in atlantic city, i'm ted greenberg. >> good advice there. and we are staying on top of that wintry mix that will impact

henley in the first alert weather center, tracking a wintry mix that's just beginning to move into the kbraarea. but the timing will impact your afternoon and evening commute. well, septa's keeping a close eye on the storm and preparing for possible problems with the afternoon commute. karla shoalee joins us right now on the phone. before we talk about the afternoon commute, bring us up to street on the broad street line. there was a problem this morning because of a water main break. can you give us the status on that? >> right. that happened around -- hi, vai, how you doing, first of all? >> good morning. >> susquehanna and dolphin, that was our southbound side. it's a shame, you know, water will find the lowest possible place to go to when that happens. but crews are on the scene and we're handling it as we speak. >> all right, now, let's talk about the afternoon commute. what should commuters expect this afternoon? >> well, you know, these storms, as you were calling it a wintry mix, are always more concerning for us, because they can make such a mess before they go away. so we're opening our command
11:46 am
center at about 3:00 today, and that's where all of our essential personnel gather to monitor the weather and adjust, you know, the trains and trolleys and bus schedules, accordingly. at least when you have the snow, you can see it, but the ice is very deceiving. so something that you might think is wet can be ice. and that's always very treacherous for our customers. so we've been treati ining our platforms, but everyone needs to be really careful this afternoon, because ice storms can coat area v. quickly when the temperature remains below freezing. so -- and what's outside of our scope is when you have the ice, you know, weighing down on our wires and our trees, they can become very heavy. so we're going to have crews all out there this afternoon, and we're just going to monitor the situation. >> and, of course, i'm sure you would tell the commuters, just to practice a little bit more patience this afternoon and be understanding of the situation, right? >> that's right. just slow down. everybody's going to get home. you know, i expect a lot of people may leave work a little

early today with the schools having early dismissal. but we're just asking everyone to take their time. even when they're driving. black ice can become very deadly. >> carla shoalee from septa, thank you for the tips and information. >> you're welcome, vai. thank you. get ready for a larger than life rock musical about to invade philadelphia. "passing strange" opens this week at the wilma theater. here to tell us all about win chris coleman, who steps into the shoes of the narrative, and jamal williams who stars along chris as the youth. so "passing strange," it was a tony award-winning production. so talk about this revival. >> this revival is actually going to be special, because "passing strange" was a show that was actually before its time. so it didn't have its length on broadway that it needed. you know, it's a coming of age story. it's a universal story, but more significantly, it's a story about a young black kid that was
11:48 am
inspired by european art and actually took the opportunity to go out into amsterdam, into berlin, and actually discover himself. >> wow. so jamar, you and your fellow cast members are actually joined on stage by a rock band. >> yes, it's incredible! >> what has that been like? you don't hear that all the time? >> no, you don't. it's a unique threatrical experience. having a live band really fuels the show in a way that is very unique and brings us alive every time we hear them and it puts us right in the center of the action. >> reporter: what is it like being a part of the whole production? >> actually, for me personally, it's a dream. to be an artist of color and to be able to tell this story and see the passion behind this young man and see the drive that he took on this journey, it's been very exciting to come to philadelphia to really dig back into this rich script and score and to bring it to this modern audience. >> chris, you have a lt of

impressive credi impressive credits. you recently starred in "jersey boys" on broadway. what's it like to be a part of this production at the wilma theater, specifically? >> specifically, the wilma theater has some amazing actors. it's actually been a lesson for me, if anything. >> wow. >> it's like, broadway is very impressive, yes, but the amount of talent that i'm seeing out here in philadelphia is blowing my mind. >> wow. >> yes. we -- >> well, that's a huge pickup for us! we'll take that! that's awesome. chris and jamar, thank you so much for being here with us this morning. >> thank you for having us. >> you can catch "passing strange." it starts this ends witwednesday 10th through the 18th at the wilma theater on south broad. just tap on the nbc 10 app and click on "find it on 10." >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> i'm meteorologist bill henley. we've issued a first alert for icy roadways for the entire

just clouds and we've seen the sunshine fade rapidly this morning in wilmington. dry right now. it's going to take some time for it to arrive not only in wilmington but also south jersey. temperatures have been warming this morning. much warmer than it was all day yesterday. already 26 degrees. we were stuck in the teens yesterday. suburbs, 21 degrees, the lehigh valley, 21 degrees. there are some warmer neighborhoods in the suburbs. however, unionville are 24 degrees and 25 and climbing for warrington. gladwyne already up to 27 degrees. many neighborhoods will peak above freezing this afternoon. which sounds great, no problem, right? but the ground is so cold, it's been so cold lately, it's going to be slower though warm up in the atmosphere. here you see the snow and freezing rain and sleet threat moving into the area. you can see it extends into western pennsylvania. that's going to keep us in some wet weather in through this afternoon and this evening. but eventually, we'll be drying out. and that happens tonight, overnight tonight, and then we've got some nice dry weather

with some sunshine until the very end of the week. and you can see the wet weather moving into california. that's going to be a rainmaker for us at the end of the week, because we've got some warmer, a big warm-up on the way this week. you may have noticed that with a seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen pun. unfortunately, it won't be here to deal with what's on tap. this is a slow view of the system moving in. 1:00 this afternoon, you can see the precipitation taking over, not only lancaster and into berks county and the lehigh valley. and during the afternoon hours of 3:00, it becomes spotty, but we will see some areas of light freezing rain and possibly some sleet mixing in. still the possibility of snow showers north and west, where the atmosphere will stay colder. and then this computer model they just updated shows that we may get a break into the late afternoon and evening hours. but that's going to be temporary. look what happens. that sleet and freezing rain for philadelphia and into new jersey and farther to the south, more

likely to just be plain rain as the temperatures will be too warm for anything else. it's already freezing right at 32 degrees in cape may. it will warm into the middle 30s. so a lot of that snow that's on the ground, not all of it, but some of it is going to be disappearing later today. and then it looks like the rest of it is probably going to be gone by the end of the week. 32 degrees this afternoon for philadelphia. a few neighborhoods get a little bit warmer than that, but still at risk of a wintry mix with that freezing rain falling on the hard surface, the cold surfaces this morning and this afternoon. 30 degrees tomorrow morning. so anything that's still on the ground and untreated will refreeze. but look at the warm-up, as we go through the week. there's that rain that's moving into california. that's here friday. 50s on friday and a few showers on saturday morning. should be dry by the time the eagles take the field. and then cold returns, but it's not going to be the brutal cold that we've been through. temperatures will be in the 30s and it will be dry, right on through next wednesday. we'll be right back.

we're staying on top of this wintry mix. it's starting to move into our region. >> we're seeing light snow and sleet moving into the reading area. you can see it showing up on the lens there. the temperature has climbed, but it's still in the 20s in the lehigh valley and much of the rest of the area. but because the atmosphere is warming above the ground level, that's why we're not going to
11:57 am
see this system as all snow. and that's what's going to give us the potential for icing this afternoon. it will be a little bit deceiving, because people will be driving down the road and it will be raining and it looks like, oh, it's not a problem, it's just plain rain, and the thermometer, if you have a thermometer on your car, may even show it's above freezing, but the ground still going to be colder than freezing, so that rain falls down and ices up, that is freezing rain. and that's what we're going to see in some areas this afternoon. >> got to be careful. our live coverage of this winter storm continues at noon. >> and you can watch "days of our lives" on cozi-tv and over the air at 10.2. stay with us. we'll be right back.
