laying face down on the floor. at 11:45 a.m., april kaufman was pronounced dead. atlantic county medical examiner was notified and responding to the scene at which tomb it was ascertained she sustained multiple gunshot wounds. over the last 10 months since my appointment as prosecutor, i u allocate d the resources necessary tr those in my office to specifically dedicate their time to some action on this matter. from the outset, i want to thank the members of the atlantic city field office of the fbi, the diligent investigators of the atlantic county prosecutors office, the lynnwood police department, egg harbor town ssh police department, summers point, cape may county prosecutors office and the lower township police department ask a host of other agencies who have supported this office throughout the many phases of the investigation. there are several agents from

both the fbi and from this office who were determined to bring charges in this matter. without their dedication and commit m, we would not be standing here today. suffice it to say we had a shared commitment, which resulted in today's arrest. today james kaufman, age 69 and fehr nand agelo were charged with murder in connection with the death of april kaufman. in addition to racketeering related to the illegal distribution of narcotics through kaufman's former medical pr practice. upon affirmation and belief known to my office, an individual was paid a sum of money to kill april kaufman. almost 18 months after april kaufman's murder, frank mo

holland died. by at the time determined to be an accidental drug overe dose. through our investigation, we determined that a long-term alliance between members of the pagan outlaw motorcycle gang and james kaufman was created for the mutual financial gain, through the use of kaufman's medical practice through illegal drug distribution. this relationship culminated on may 10th, 2012 with the murder for hire of april kaufman. prior to 2011, the defendant it kaufman had a relationship, which centered around the medical practice and in the summer of 2011, he solicited to murder his wife. as a result of april kaufman's desire to divorce james kaufman, he was intent to rather have her

killed as opposed to losing his financial empire as he described it to several individuals. it was also determined that april kaufman learned of the many unlawful and unlawful practices this james kaufman was utilizing his medical practice for. she threatened to use this as leverage to expose him to gain a favorable divorce settlement. as a result, this provided motivation for james kaufman to have his wife killed. it should be noted that the illegal drug distribution network was set up in a typical pattern of hierarchy. james kaufman and fehr day nand were at the top. james kaufman was essentially give free prescriptions for opioids such as oxycontin to those individuals sent to his

medical practice. ferdinand had two individuals recruiting to obtain the scripts and those recruited additional people to obtain illegal prescriptions. ferdinand would receive a cash payment of $1,000 per prescription or a predetermined number of pills once the script was filled. if an individual did not have insurance, they were required to pay from $100 to $250 per visit to jim kaufman. those that would receive the prescriptions would resell is them or keep for personal use. at some time in 2011, james kaufman and ferdinand propositioned a number of individuals to murder april kaufman. the basis was that april kaufman threatened to expose the illegal drug distribution operation. they were unsuccessful in this recruitment for approximately a

year until ferdinand found francis mau holland able to take up the contract. upon belief and affirmation, frank received a ride to the kaufman residence in the early morning hours in 2012. the doors were left open and frank was given a gun to carry out his task. he went inside and he shot april kaufman twice. payment was made to both ferdinand and frank. ferdinand stated that he received approximately $20,000 in cash for his role. however, it is speculated that e he may have received even more. the money was picked up on the day of the murder by ferdinand's ex-wife beverly, who her role

will be named in a moment. the scripts were in addition to additional illegal prescriptions. the scripts were used to obtain drugs that day and the money was given to ferdinand. following the murder, the drug enterprise continued for approximately five additional years. those receiving pills did change during that time. however, every person to be involved in the drug enterprise was either a pagan, former pagan or member of the gang. the enterprise folded in june 201 with the arrest of jim kaufman on weapons charges. in all total, eight individuals were arrested today. james kaufman, 69, of lynnwood, for first degree racketeering, first degree leader of a racketeering organization and murder. ferdinand, 62, petersburg, new

james kaufman has been accused of killing her. it happened inside thundershower home in new jersey back in may of 2012. she had been shot multiple times. a lot of details coming out from the news conference. >> a lot to unpack here. murder for hire scheme alleged by prosecutors. they claim the alleged motive was that april kaufman threatened to divorce her husband because she had learned of his illegal opioid distribution activities, which as you heard prosecutors say, allegedly involved the pagan outlaw motorcycle gang. it's a very tangled story. we'll continue to follow developments on this. but the top of that story is charges finally filed in the death of april kaufman. her daughter had been waiting for this moment for more than five years. she alleged her stepfather was responsible for the murder, but it took a long time for

there's a push to help young people find work. the mayor unveiled a new $6 million youth awards program. it's geared specifically for young adults with autism. those who have gone through the judicial process and student who is are close to or have aged out of foster care. the mayor says the program will leak job seekers with training and helps complete high school. >> the project is expected to be fully up and running in march. also in philadelphia, the school district's free breakfast program is expanding. nearly 75% of schools in philadelphia take part. more students are leading to higher attendance in the district. 1 out of every 5 children does not know where his or her next meal is coming from. turning to our weather now.

a welcome warm up for january. it feels a lot warmer for some. in the 40s in our area. these folks in the trolley square neighborhood took advantage of the weather. anyone with cabin fever anxious to get outside and enjoy these warmer temperatures, taking a live look at the river rink at pens landing. almost felt like you don't need the gloves, but you still do. >> it teals like florida. >> the big thaw heat iing up business for car washes around the area. >> reporter: that's right. i have been watching car after car come out here. they are leaving clean and that's because the last few days they are driving around in the slush and all the salt. they are trying to get that from damaging their cars.

six-year murder investigation. a new jersey doctor now faces charges in his wife's murder. april kauffman was found dead in 2012. good evening, i'm keith jones. >> and i'm erin coleman. cydney long joins us now live with the breaking details. there's a lot to unpack in this case. >> reporter: there really is. it's pretty intricate and involved, but to boil it down, it involves racketeering, conspiracy and hurd for hire. prosecutors told us that dr. james kaufman was essentially selling illegal drugs out of his medical office through a motorcycle gang. this for financial gain. his wife had knowledge of it, she plans to use it against him in a divorce.
