that plaguing this area. people have been waiting and wondering if for what happened today for five and a half years. we did get a number of answers today, but this investigation has numerous twists and turns. >> today james kaufman, age 69, were charged with murder in connection with the death of april kauffman. >> reporter: prosecutors laid out a twisted tale, one of illegal drugs racketeering and the murder for hire of april kauffman. >> francis mulholland was paid a sum of money to kill april kauffman. >> reporter: he was motivate d y greed. >> he was give free prescriptions for opioids to those september to his practice. >> reporter: april kauffman threatened to expose her husband's illegal enterprise u at the onset of their divorce.

>> her desire to divorce james kaufman, he was intent to rather have her killed as opposed to losing his financial empire. >> reporter: he was the one who led kaufman to a hit man. in total eight people were arrested today. kaufman was 47. she was a well-loved radio host and advocate for military vets. she was killed may 10th of 2012 suffering multiple gunshot wounds. a worker found kaufman lying on her bedroom floor. the beginning they did not believe the killing was random. he attended the funeral, but in the months ask years since her death, he remarried. the victim's daughter sued her stepfather in federal court aimed at stopping him from collecting on any insurance policies. documented evidence from his home and medical office.

it's also important to note that the man who pulled the trigger died a year later in october of 2013 from an apparent drug overdose. i also spoke with dr. james kaufman's attorney by phone a short time ago. he told me in part, quote, i have not read the indictment but putting in writings have not changed anything. hes his client was innocent of these murder charges prior to today's announcement and his plan will be to appear in court and plead not guilty ob all counts. we're live, cydney long, nbc 10 news. kaufman was already in jail after pulling a gun on police officers outside his office in atlantic county. that was captured on body cameras, you may remember this from last june. investigators had gone to his office to investigate illegal prescriptions. kaufman then pulled out a handgun and refuse d to leave. he later surrendered and was arrested for weapons charges.

coming up tonight, april kauffman's daughter is speaking out on the newly announced charges and how she almost lost hope in solving the murder case of her murder. brandon hudson will have that part of the story coming up at 11:00. also tonight, this is the mess you can come home to this week. the warmer weather is is problems with people's pipes. lauren mayk is live to show us how it's leaving homeowners with a wet and expensive mess. >> reporter: that freeze that left snow and ice outside, but inside it caused damage to pipes that just can't take that kind of cold for that long. now the calls are piling up for pl plumbers. as the region thaws out, they were working through the warm-up today tackling jobs like this one.

he's fixing broken pipes from the freeze that gripped the rejob for days. >> once you thaw it out, this is the end result. >> broken pipes. no pressure. >> reporter: he realized the trouble during the cold stretch, but for some the thaw might uncover pipe problems. >> it doesn't always freeze and break instantly. >> it's slowing again now, and. he packed up ready for another job. >> once the weather breaks, i'm sure we'll e get another cold spell and be back at it again. >> reporter: while we're in this warm-up, there's some things to buy to wrap around and insulate the pipes, but that plumber i spoke with says that's thot always the answer. sometimes those pipes are in your wall where you can't get to them, but the cold air can.

her name has not been released. new at 6:00, a small school bus crashed into a car in philadelphia's only neighborhood sending one to the hospital. it happened just before 5:00. the injuries are not serious. now to a developing story out of washington. bannon is leaving his position with breitbart. it comes after the derogatory comments about the president and his family in a new book. bannon left his position in the white house back in august, but he apparently remained influential with the president until the new book came out last week. late this afternoon he released a statement saying he was proud of what the breitbart news team accomplished. new jersey's outgoing governor says he's leaving grateful and a better man than he was eight years ago. chris christie also said he's leaving the state a much better state. he will hand it over next week.

the next hour. and by morning, going to be in the teens. it's going to refreeze tonight. it's already down to 21. easton and reading to 18 degrees. robinsville at 1. and then we go up into the 40s again tomorrow. a little bit above average for temperatures. then we have the big jump that comes on and into friday. and it's not just the daytime temperatures that are going up. the nighttime temperatures too. tonight in philadelphia, 19. tomorrow night's low 36. thursday night is at 50. and actually friday at 54. low temperature is 54. but the rain comes in. thursday night in the suburbs may come in thursday afternoon. into friday and some of that should be on the heavy side.
