the piles of snow are turning to puddles now. the temperatures continue to climb. and a similar scene in delaware today. plenty of people out and about in downtown wilmington. still jacket and hat weather though. but nowhere close to as cold as the last few weeks as you well know. meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has more on the timing of the rain in your most accurate forecast. >> the rain is dwoing to carry us right into the start of the weekend. >> we're going to get quite a number of hours of rain between tonight and saturday morning. some of it's going to be heavy. the ground is is already wet. we have more snow to melt. we have ice that can create ice jams. we have some potential problems here. that's why we have the first alert for this heavy rain and flooding for the whole area. we're going to start it at 4:00 a.m. on friday. it won't be the heaviest rain falling then. pu it's raining and it's raining friday. friday night and into saturday morning. so the first alert goes into noon saturday. heavy rain, possible

thunderstorms, we have gusty winds. even without thunderstorms. and the run off from the frozen ground and the ice clogged drains. it's just a lot going on. there's a lot of mouseture starting to build. and the midwest and it's just a matter of time before it gets up here. it is much, much warmer than it has been. it's 57 in philadelphia. we got into the 60s in parts of delaware today. and tomorrow, many places are going to get into the 60s. look at this. by midnight, it's 53 here. and then it depose up. you're not going to need any coat. and then in the afternoon, we're in the 60s. we're going to see quite a bit of rain, but look at these temperatures. they are extremely mild near record breaking in some areas during the day tomorrow. but we've got the opposite too. we have a tremendous plunge just in time for the eagles game.

the scene in sick larville. what's the latest? >> reporter: we're much closer to the scene than we could get this morning and it's still a crime scene. police are still out here and take a look. they have been going in and out of this it light gray town home. the one without the front door. the 13-hour standoff that ended at 9:00 this morning is now in its 20th hour as far as the investigation is involved. both police is and residents subject to this ordeal spent many hours frightened and on edge praying for a positive ending. >> pop, pop, pop. that's it. they are still shooting. >> reporter: she dropped to the floor of her town home. it was 8:00 wednesday night. some of her neighbors did the same while recording on their cell tones the intensity of what was unfolding down the block. residents of brittnywood knew it wasn't fireworks. >> everything was dark. >> minutes after that, it was gunshots. so i was already nervous. >> reporter: when a massive police ask s.w.a.t. response took over this stretch of road.

>> e we didn't know what was going on at all. i was standing on the porch and the cop was like there's a guy with a gun. please g inside. you're not safe outside hoop. >> reporter: he shot at this armored vehicle multiple times cutting through steel. none of the officers inside were injured. 18 residents in all were evacuated and others stayed inside overnight. over the course of 12 hours, they never fired a suingle shot. instead relying on ab ar more mor truck to remove the door and robots inside. >> miguel shot this vid row of police entering the home. police found a 24-year-old man fatally injured inside. >> i'm very glad it's over.

>> residents here are relieved. some neighbors say and shared they used their cell phones to record some of the conversation police were having with the man inside. so it highlights some of the negotiations. you can hear it for yourself when we see you coming up at 5:00. >> before you go, very scary for people in the neighborhood. we just heard from them. also a big problem for schools in the area. >> reporter: that's right. two school districts agreed with police they didn't want students either walking to school or going to and from the bus stop so they agreed to cancel school for the day until this standoff was over. we're live, cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> anything but a normal day there. thank you. >> a murder for hire that all started as the story of drugs, divorce ask a motorcycle gang.

they ae peered in court. ted greenberg finds out who allegedly tipped off police. >> reporter: he said little to the judge today. he's being held in a jail north jersey. apparently, for his own safety. >> you understand that? >> yeah. >> reporter: dr. james kaufman appearing in court by video for the first time since being charged with the 2012 killing of his wife april kauffman. >> he's not guilty. the doctor has maintained his innocence for the past five years. he's assisted in attempting to give information. >> reporter: kaufman charged tuesday with orchestrating the murder for hire plot and leading an illegal opioid distribution ring connected to the pagan motorcycle gang run out of his medical practice.

>> he and two others arrested on racketeering charges also going before a judge. the radio host was killed in the home after she threatened to divorce her husband and expose the drug operation. >> i am so dumbfound ed and shocked by all this. >> a close friend of april long suspected dr. kaufman played a role in his wife's murder. but she says she was stunned to learn of the alleged part. both he and april grew up together. >> that was the shocking part. because i thought they were it friends. >> reporter: according to court records a confidential informant had numerous recorded conversations who admitted details of the drug enterprise and the murder. court documents also allege he plotted to have dr. coughman killed by the mafia or people at the jail. >> drop the gun. sd >> kaufman was locked up there

on weapons charges after showing a gun when investigators came to search his office. he was moved to the hudson county jail following the arrest. >> e we don't think it would be prudent to lodge them together. >> reporter: they are due in court on tuesday for detention hearings. he's being held for trial on charges connected to the search at his office. i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> now to new details in the murder investigation of a university of pennsylvania student who was found dead in california. today we learned that three search warrants have been issued in connection with the death of blaze bernstein. we also know that a high school friend was the last person to see the sophomore alive. he told police that the two of them went to meet someone at the park where bernstein was later found dead. his grandfather spoke last nugt at a vigil for the teen. >> we thank god for the

finality. he's with god now. >> the friend interviewed is not named as a person of interest or a suspect. we're still awaiting bernstein's official cause of death. our sister station in los angeles is still working on this story. we'll have a report from the west coast coming up at 6:00. the owner of a popular diner in south jersey telling us his family is devastated after flames destroyed that business overnight. fire hit the country town diner just after midnight. this used to be the white horse diner. the new owner took over last may. >> i don't know. i'll be honest. my mother, my father, had the heart problems and i was the only one. they are with me every day. we're the bread and butter. >> right now there's no official cause but the owner believes the fire started in the kitchen.

>> the day after governor wolf declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency, people are getting more help. this morning the mayor joined local leaders to dedicate this affordable housing center in north philadelphia. it will offer a place to live and support for people in recovery. he's behind this project that helps people with drug and alcohol dependencies. happening tonight, addiction among children will be the main focus of an event for parents struggling to deal with their child's drug problem. the presentation will include drug and alcohol prevention techniques for young people and also how parents can cope with that task. if you're interested, go to the barber and harvey enrichment center starting at 7:00 tonight. we're learning more about the prison reform efforts in delaware after a deadly inmate uprising we covered for you. state officials released an interim report on the 40

recommendations made after the riot at james correctional center. in february a correctional officer was killed. three other staffers were taken hostage. today's report includes efforts to improve safety and training for correctional officers. officials say progress is being made, but it's a complex, long-term process. we now know what was in philadelphia's pitch to amazon in the effort to land the tech giant's second head quarterers. according to a report on the city's bid, leaders touted the strong cell phone service, close proximity to other cities, airport and length of tile it takes to fill engineering jobs. other factors included philadelphia's affordable housing market and all of its historic sites. 230 applicants are trying to lure in amazon. septa is moving forward with plans to modernize the trolley system. the agency plans to add stops featuring raised platforms and wheelchair access. they announced plans to add

larger cars as part of a $1 billion overhaul. housing authority teamed to help people find jobs today. they hosted this job fair in north philadelphia and job seekers got to sit in for the food services, transportation facilities, maintenance and other positions. the president said residents want to be employed. >> i see young people. i see older folks. and everybody in between coming up and filling applications because they have an opportunity to work with a great organization. >> the district is looking to fill 158 positions. an autistic celebration commemorating martin luther king jr. sculptures of the late civil rights leader were unveiled today. young artists created these works of art using quotes from dr. king as creative inspiration. they will be on display at

xfinity live. anyone out early tailgating at the sports complex will need their cold weather gear. >> nbc 10 fist alert meteorologist brittney shipp is live for us outside lyincoln financial field. you have the eagles gameday forecast. bring us up to date. what can we expect? >> it's beginnigoing to be a mu different story. we have storm force 10 out here with temperatures right around 60 degrees. that is going to change as we go into saturday. really it's going to change throughout the entire game. you can see a few piles of snow. with the warmer weather, we'll see the snow melt. now as we get into saturday, that's when things will start to shift. let's take a closer look at your game day forecast. if you're out tailgating, 42 degrees. wind speeds are at 15 miles per hour. but by kickoff, look at the temperatures. freezing temperatures settle in. through the day, our temperatures will continue to

cool down. to so we are tracking about a 40-degree drop between tomorrow and saturday. by the fourth quarter, only 25 degrees with wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour. so our feels like temperatures will go all the way down to 25 to 12 degrees. by the time you're heading home to the car, it's going to feel like it's 12 degrees out. but hopefully we'll be celebrating a win so it won't matter. here's your checklist. mild tailgating temperatures expected. a cold kickoff forecast. heavy layers, you'll definitely need to layer. up as the game goes on. we'll continue to get colder. wind speeds will stay strong and we expect to see freezing conditions by the fourth quarter. so definitely an interesting forecast for us. we're checking out mounds of snow behind us. temperatures right now just below 60 degrees. but big changes on the way as we get closer to saturday. we'll have more e details.

coming up in a bit. i'm meteorologist brittney shipp, back to you guys. . >> it's not as heavy when you start watch iing the game. thank you. that rain is going to last into saturday. as early as tonight. you can see the system charging towards our area. we're going to have to enjoy u the time before it moves in it. >> it is going to be close to 70 degrees tomorrow. it may be record high temperatures. by saturday you just saw what brittney shipp was showing you. it's going to be brutal out there. and in the middle, we have a lot of rain and we have melting snow and ice on the rivers. there's going to be problems with that. heavy rain and flooding. 4:00 a.m. friday to noon on

saturday. heavy rain and thunderstorms. we have a flood threat. we have runoff. we have possible ice jams on the river. and here comes some of the moisture. you see the start of it in virginia now. that's very light. the heavier stuff is farther back to the west. there's a tremendous increase just over the last 12 hours or so. take a look at the temperatures here. we got into the 60s in south jersey. and in much of delaware earlier. it is now 57 in philadelphia. 56 in wilmington. 47 in mount pocono. tomorrow we're going for 66 in fairmo fairmont. 62 in al lentown. we have the threat of some thunderstorms in parts of the area. you don't see this very much in january. but it's just one day.

64 in voorhees. it's coming in off that colder ocean. and now hour by hour, what a change we have. here we are in the 50s right now. and we're watching the rain come in. not so much this evening. but by morning and we're in the 50s to start the day. so if you're not going to need a heavy coat. that's for sure. and later in the morning, more rain. now we're starting to see the yellows and reds. the heavier rain, possible thunderstorms and localized flooding. we're seeing the temperature go up too. into the 60s. 10:00 we still have showers in the area. and then another batch perhaps first thing saturday morning. . look at the temperature. 57 degrees to start the day. by 11:00 a.m. this computer model has us at 27. take a look at this. 8:00 a.m., it feels like 53.

by 10:00 a.m., 34. that's almost a 20-degree drop in two hours. and then by the end of the game into the 20s. feeling like 12. that is might cold. and the amounts of rain could be 1 to 2 inches on top of the snow, on top of the ice. that's why we have the first alert out for the potential flooding. >> we really shouldn't be fooled by the daytime high because that's going to hit early in the morning and then the big drop off. >> we look back in history at saturday's date. the high will probably be well up into the 50s. but not in the afternoon on saturday. >> at least the players will be warmed up by then. that really cold air comes in by late in the game. >> hopefully. >> it's going to start cold and get colder. >> there you go. that's the reality of it. what could be more important than having rain gear ready for the tailgate.

area by late tonight. we won't dry out until the start of the weekend. the time will make a mess of the commute. a live look from our apartment came camera. a lot of cars out there. all the heavy rain on top of the snow and ice melt could create a lot of flooding. nbc 10 issued a first alert. one week ago much of our area was e getting hammered with heavy snow. >> now we're getting ready for heavy rains. meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back with more on the timing in your most accurate weather forecast. >> the light showers start overnight tonight. not so much this evening, by tomorrow morning it's going to be wet and it's going to stay wet for 36 hours. you can see the entire area is covered by the first alert from friday to noon on saturday. . possible thunderstorms.

we could see gusty winds even without thunderstorms tomorrow. gusts over 40 miles an hour. we have the potential flooding. we have potential ice jams on rivers. so that's something we're going to have to keep an eye on because those things can develop pretty suddenly. it's dry in our area now. all across the region. but down to the south, we have a few showers moving up. more significant rain is farther out to the west. the temperatures are mighty mild for this time of the the year. certainly compared to what we have seen for the last couple weeks. 57 in philadelphia. it feels balmy out there. but it's going to be warmer tomorrow. the temperature is going into the 60s tomorrow. but it's going to be wet from morning to noon to night. and tomorrow night the temperatures may go up even more into the 60s across much of the area.

the first and last time. 13 years later the fire sticks with him because of the brief encounter. >> he was alone and it was like i don't know how to explain it. it was like a relief. it was just a thrill to e see him come through that third floor window. that ladder. >> that relief, that thrill now regret he didn't get to see him again before his death. the lieutenant was one of 100 firefighters who responded to a fire in north philadelphia saturday morning. >> we have one member unaccounted for. >> a structure collapse trapped him under the debris for 30 minutes. his fire fighting family tried desperately to get him out. he was pronounced dead in the hospital later that morning. >> we're one big family. whether you meet the guy one time or when you meet him and

hang out with him on a weekly basis. >> thursday and friday they loved ones including his fire family will gather for a viewing to pay their respects, share their love and think it for service. >> it was a pleasure meeting him that day. i always had intentions to try to look him up. but i never did. regretfully i never did. here's a look at some of the other stories we're following county by county at 4:00. a woman is under arrest after police say she left that backpack with 10,000 packets of heroin in a middle school parking lot. authorities say 26-year-old natasha willis has now admitted leave iing the bag behind the middle school last month and she's been charged with possession with intent to deliver narcotics. and also some other related

offenses. in atlantic county, a dog is now safe after a scare that's been lighting up social media. police posted this video on facebook. you see crews there saving the dog. it fell through an icy pond. firefighters jumped in to action to rescue the dog yesterday. he managed to walk away from the icy scare perfectly fine. innen kent county, we know which bands will take the stage b at the music festival this summer. they include eminem, kendrick lamar, and the killers. the four-day music festival returns to the woodlands starting june 14th. tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10:00. love that music. the countdown is really on right now. we are just 2 days away from the start of the winter olympics in south korea. >> hopefully we're dpoing to witness more americans taking

heavy rain, strong winds, and this is something we're going to have to monitor. not everybody is going to be seeing flooding, but there may be some ice jams in parts of the area. we're seeing a few showers starting to come u through virginia. the moisture is moving up from the south and coming in from the west. it just keeps building hour by hour. the temperatures certainly build today. we got into the 50s across a good by the of the area. even in the 60s in south jersey and delaware before those cooler winds off the water came in. tomorrow, mighty warm. near records in parts of the area. very windy too. gusts over 40. 67 in fairmont. 61 in el winn. 62 in reading. and it's not just for ab an hour or so. it's going to be like this friday night too.

cooler at the beaches. wind coming off the cold ocean. hour by hour, we watch this tremendous drop. so friday we start off warm. we stay warm. here comes the heavy rain friday afternoon. that's when we have the best chance of e sooing some localized flooding. then as we go into saturday morning, we're already cooling off north and west. and in a couple hours, the temperature drops 20 degrees and later on we're dropping into the 20s and the feels like drops from 53 to 34 in just two on saturday. then it's still bitter cold sunday and monday. then some snow tuesday. how about a little football flare for some of your favorite tailgate food? the local pizzeria dish iing up special pies for the game. that's next.
